To those saying the good magic should disappear too: He does have to leave the good magic behind as well. Just a small pocket of it remains, to give humans "inspiration".I think the whole point is that it's possible to rid ourselves of the more harmful aspects of irrational thinking, like superstition, while still maintaining a small part of irrationality that is a necessary part of being human. He made a very heroic sacrifice to save a world he would never see again.

When I watched this as a kid, at that moment I didn't understand what it was that Peter was giving up by denying all magic. It was only a few minutes later when the remaining wizards explained to the group that by denying all magic, Peter was essentially giving up all of his friends and his love. Needless to say I was very very upset right up until the closing moments of the film. XD
I'm truly amazed this is a kids movie to begin with. I've watched Rankin and Bass movies since I was small and as an adult I am somewhat surprised I didn't wind up more weird than I already am 😂
"The sun is the sun!"
Reminds me of "Tide goes in, tide goes out. Never a miscommunication. You can’t explain that. You can’t explain why the tide goes in."
I had to look up that quote... yeah, I can see Bill O'Reilly saying that... @.@

The last minute or so mirrors every physics class I ever attended (the students reacting just like Ommadon).
He literally defeats the main villain with facts and logic.
He “Sheldon”ed Ormidon
@@toddlindsay8846 You could say he schooled him.
"Nothing so horrible could be real." Peter obviously hasn't browsed the weird side of youtube
Or read Lovecraft.
EDIT: _Sorry. That was terrible._
Or tumblr
Also; he failed to mention Entomology, funny, considering how horrific the insect world actually is.
Sir Peter hails from the early 80s and hasn't seen the last 40 years.
@@kuanged Its a joke....
The time Jack Tripper defeated Darth Vader...with science! I loved this movie as a kid, and knowing now that two of my favorite actors were in it makes it all the more awesome.
"That's why antiquity chose me! You are magic, mere illusion. I am science, logic and the truth!"
- Is then protected by an inexplicable shield that looks suspiciously magical.
It's the boundary between fantasy and reality.
Yeah that was kind of a poor art choice.
It should have just shown the flames having zero effect on him, because they weren't real.
n 1962, in his book “Profiles of the Future: An Inquiry into the Limits of the Possible”, science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated his famous Three Laws, of which the third law is the best-known and most widely cited: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic - In this case it's one and the same.
@@Kingofturves They did say that magic would be protected and separated by their *Magic Realm,* where they wouldn't be able to interact with reality, logic, and science, but they could at least inspire future generations.
@@mr6johnclarkThat _wasn’t_ technology, though. You could say it was the border between reality and fantasy… but it didn’t look solely fantastic on the outside.
If anything, it’s like a shield of carbon dioxide that robs a blazing inferno of its oxygen.
Great movie. John Ritter did an excellent job voicing his character.
Unfortunately Sir Peter's belief in science ,( without leaving room for imagination and wonder in his heart and mind) has made the Nothing stronger and led to the destruction of Fantasia and the Child-like Empress. Calling all the Bastien's of the world, let's all make a wish!
*slow clap for genuine cleverness*
FBoobieTubie - I think he also accidentally killed Tinkerbell.
Actually, no. Peter may be a man of science, but he also has imagination. Nothing says you can't have both.
how does science leave no room for imagination and wonder? Honestly, I think it *increases* wonder.
MOON-CHILD!!!!!!!!
what I kinda liked is, though peter fancies himself a scientist, he still clearly didn't want to deny ALL magic, the look on his face when Ommadon called him out "SAY IT!" peter was like" ah! FUCK! now I have to deny dragons!...sigh...FINE!" and then bitch slaps ommadon with the big book of science...would have been perfect if after ommadon turned to dust if peter was like "and I had my fingers crossed!...BITCH!"
Dylan Fix He did. Because he awakened Melissaunde with a kiss.
Mike Dunchok yeah, but isn't he banned from staying in the magic world because he denied all magic? I mean I haven't watched this movie since I was like...5-6ish (22 now)and if I remember correctly, the green wizard guy, says peter cant stay because he denied magic, and that kinda sucks ballz if that's the case
Yeah, but when he hears that he awakened Melissaunde with a kiss, he says, "then perhaps he isn't totally lost to magic after all".
Mike Dunchok h yeah, I remember that, still, I wish they made more cartoons with this kind of art work....its very fitting if that makes sense
+Dylan Fix The metaphor for peter denying all magic, is him realizing that for logic to prevail, all things in fantasy have to be denied as real, this INCLUDES all the good in fantasy along with all the evils in it. That what he had to accept, like with all atheists, we all had happy memories of pleasant things from our childhood, father christmas, the easter bunny, the tooth fairy, but the same fantasies brought about demons and ghosts and monsters under the bed.
Peter choose to accept logic, and deny all the good and evil in fantasy as being real.
Just realised 40 years later that when Sir Peter speaks the subject names, he states them in alphabetical order
Man, this movie was a masterpiece. I wish every kid on earth could see this at the right time in their life.

40 years on. Well played. And thanks for sharing.
I loved this movie as a kid.
Back when Cartoon Network used to air it once a month or something it was one of my favourites.
Then they made the ludicrous decision to not show it anymore.
Now no-one does it and kid's entertainment has been all the poorer for it.
Truth
I'm a living proof, I've never seen it, known of it thanks to the internet
Itis quite interesting to how they managed to illustrate that the more logically/objectivly you think of life the less magic/inspiration there is out in the world. Truly beautiful and poetic
I love it how he screams when Sociology was mentioned.
This movie was before it's time, kek.
That's not a real science, so I think that would have strengthened him.
@@EngineerMK2004 of course Sociology is a real science. It uses scientific method (observation, theory and then experimentation) and it's subject of study is the social force and institutions humans create. It helps to understand what shapes social relationships, politics, and so on which are so important to humans.
Don’t we all. Don’t we all.
Sociology and Psychology is are not exact sciences. It's as much a made-believe thing as magic.
Or phrase it however you want. They try to strike a balance. Silly movie, but I can't fault the message.
I feel like it's similar to the ending of Labyrinth. You have to grow up and as you do you learn more and leave. Behind old superstitions but you keep a portion of that magic with you to look back on for inspiration and hope in dark times.
Any science sufficiently further advanced than the observers frame of reference appears to be magic to that observer.
What do you think a Babylonian would make of a lazer cutting sheet metal, or a Roman General a Hydrogen Bomb.
Or a small piece of glass in your hand that holds the sum of human knowledge?
Bring someone from a few hundred years ago to modern times they would think we were magicians.
@@stevepalpatine2828 But we could explain it to them, even if we had to start with simplifications. Pre-modern humans weren't stupid - merely ignorant.
And to be honest, pre-modern humans saw no difference between philosophers and magicians. What we now sneer at as "magic" was believed to simply be material reality. They wouldn't necessarily think we were wielding some divine power - it would have been well within their worldview to believe that we were simply "very wise".
@@tbotalpha8133 Magician comes from the word Magi which means just "wise" so yeah youre right

It's an distinctive sound that gives me instant nostalgia
Can't help but notice that "sociology" is what makes Omadon lose it. "AAAAAUUUGH, that's not even a real science!!! What a world, what a world..."

This is truly the very best voice work ever done by James Earl Jones.
Agreed.
The role of Ommadon has to be James Earl Jones at his hammiest.
Yeah but he's got the voice to pull it off.
In fairness, to play a role that silly in such a serious manner, you kinda have no choice but to chew the scenery

James Earl Jones has passed away today. This may be my favorite scene of his.

Most badass nerd EVER!! I love this movie so much. I watched it over and over again when I was a kid.
Rather poignant moment here, how when Ommadon challenged Peter to deny all magic, we see him pause at 2:55, because he realised what will happen to him if he makes the denial. Ommadon pushed him and he made the declaration, knowing that while he would be victorious, he would lose his connection to this fantasy world and everything about it, which he had loved all his life. He made a very heroic sacrifice to save a world he would never see again.
Yeah, it kills that part of him that wants to believe impossible things can happen 💔😭 ... until his girl shows up at the end in the pawn shop :)
Such a great movie with some really powerful themes :) 80s "kids" movies were on another level :)
I can relate to Ommadon's pain when it comes to math, physics and chemistry. Memorizing the formulas can really burn you out.🙃😂
"The sun is the sun!" has been stuck in my head for days, took me a while to find this!
I remember watching this film as a young child. I remember how sad I felt that he rejected all magic, but how releaved I was that he was able to best the sorcerer.
Magic retreats from our world, and we are all the poorer for it.
The incredible talent of James Earl Jones!
I am 43 and have watched this film since I was a child,I now watch it with my son and he loves it,go on the 80s🎉

By enforcing materialist logic to refute all other ways of thought Peter has hastened the end of all other magic in the world and thus ensured Ommadon's victory.
He showed us how he was going to influence mankind towards that end, up to and including the atomic bomb.
Peter's from the modern world and what do they have there? Atomic bombs!
OMMADON: "Deny ME and you deny ALL magic. Say it!"
PETER: "I Deny ALL magic!"

Instead of saying "I deny all magic", Peter should have said "No, I deny that magic and science are mutually exclusive."
How most college students feel. But seriously, it was awesome.
0:48 that laugh alone is epic.
How about how he also traveled through space/time, returning the red crown on the way back? I think it subtly argued a much greater magic in man's uncovered potential that had first manifested as magic, then moved to science.
