I agree! James Earl Jones nailed it here... but the monologue could've done expounded upon. Here's my expansion on it. Ommadon: You know, Carolinus... I have weapons at my disposal. Weapons which you would not even dare to use. For you see, it is not logic, ethics, and kindness that lead a man onwards. It is not science and curiosity that guide his actions. I'll teach him how to fly like the faeries and birds that he envies. And I'll give him the ultimate answers to every question his science could ever ask... and the world will be free for my magic to rule again!
Looking back at this 30 years later, it's a remarkably fine, literate script. The central concepts are very well expressed, the acting is excellent and even the Rankin/ Bass animation, though a little stiff, is based on elegant conceptual art and good very good today. Plus the story is melancholy, and has many fine high-fantasy themes and sequences that are far superior to nearest contemporary movie, which I suppose was Disney's 'Black Cauldron'
There's a later scene, where Lo Tae Zhao says, "because logic is so, logical". I LOVE how the ONLY wizard to have ANY understanding of science and logic, even almost approval, is the wizard of philosophy and enlightenment. For those steeped in science and logic, you know why that is DEEP. This is just one of many VERY deep concepts in the film. These guys put a lot of thought, love, into it.

I watched this again after 30+ years. This was powerful and profound, the Red Wizard is a villain with intelligence and cunning and ambition to rival Palpatine and Sauron.
Palpatine, no... Sauron, on the other hand, is an incredibly apt comparison, as Sauron did the same thing when he convinced the Elven Smiths to forge the Rings of Power, which led to the Fall of Numenor.
Despite not having seen this movie in over 30 years, it still hits me how good it is (for what it is). It, along with "The Last Unicorn" are some of my favourite animated films from my childhood.
You see, the other wizards made a critical error. At the end of it all, they chose not to destroy the Red Crown, as it was a part of the very fabric of magic, and they thought it harmless without Omadon. What they failed to realize, is that during this speech, Omadon poured his dark determination into the Red Crown, such that even after its master’s demise, the Red Crown continued to influence man towards self destruction. A few scenes in the movie even hint at this being the case. Now, does that mean defeating Omadon was pointless? No. The Red Crown is powerful and dangerous, but it’s not self-aware, and so it just guides humanity towards a vague doom, rather than a specific one. If Omadon had survived, humanity wouldn’t have made it past WW1.
Mankind needs ambition to push itself forward. But one must always be wary of wearing the red crown - lest that thirst for power drive one to destruction.
Ommadon...when he speaks all is silent..when he delivers....all is in awe and terror.....and when he makes a threat...he carries it out proudly! What a fantastic villain!
As terrifying as Obadon (Omadon?) is in this sequence, one cannot entirely blame him for being angry that man is seeking to destroy the world of magic and fantasy, nor for seeking to defend his world against the encroachment. You can almost sympathize with Omadon on some level, and that just makes him all the more terrifying.
Fair point. But he was still going to destroy the world regardless of whatever reason it was he needed to be stopped. It’s either a fading age trying to desperately prolong the inevitable defeat for a lost cause…or you simply just do what is needed and just go with the flow and stop struggling against the tide.
I don’t think Omadon is really defending himself as much as taking the opportunity to go all out and take the world as his own. Hell his plan is essentially to let humans embrace science to their own destruction as his realm is not endangered as much as the green wizard for example
