- French repertoire holds a special place in the heart of Benjamin Bernheim, one of the leading tenors of the new generation of singers. Bernheim’s list of recent performances, including the Opéra National de Bordeaux, underline his status as the opera world’s brightest rising star. His Deutsche Grammophon debut album, in which he is accompanied by the Prague Philharmonia under the baton of Emmanuel Villaume, captures the central roles in his current Romantic repertoire, including Massenet’s aria from “Werther“.
Recorded live in November of 2019 at the Opéra National de Bordeaux, “Pourquoi me réveiller, ô souffle du printemps?“ from Act III of Jules Massenet’s “Werther“ features the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine under the baton of Oleksandr Yankevych.

Benjamin Bernheim ist eine Ausnahmeerscheinung. Letzten Dienstag durfte ich ihn im Werther am Operhaus Zürich erleben. Dieser Tenor bringt für diese Rolle alles mit, was zu einer wunderbaren Interpretation nötig ist. Legato, Piani, Spitzentöne, alles ist mit einer unglaublichen Leichtigkeit einfach da. B. Bernheim ist ein grossartiger Sänger!

…the type of tenor voices demanded, developed and rewarded in our time. The Golden Era created and rewarded big voices. The icons of those times are well known. I wouldn’t even dare to compare them. It is useless.
Todays audiences request slim, slender lyrical voices, not the big house filling voices I have been used to. If a MDM type appeared, people would probably be embarrassed. Mr. Bernheim is a wonderful tenor. I wish him a smart role management to preserve and develop his potential. Characters on stage suiting his voice, not (only) his wallet or Marketing aspects. The greatest ones of the past did everything in the best interest of their
voices. A Jussi Björling never sang anything not suitable for his unique voice. So he remained an angel singing for the world.

Jussi Bjorling had absolutely the best technique ever. But, he did sing a wide variety of roles, including heavier Italian repertoire than one would expect for the slimmer nature of his voice (relative to MDM, Corelli, or Giacomini etc). Who knows what would have happened had he continued in that rep? He never really had a chance to ruin his voice as he died an early death of alcoholism in his 40s.
enfin, je comprends tout ce qu'il chante ! ensuite, c'est très musical, il suit magnifiquement l'orchestre, et ne cherche pas à déborder de l'orchestre, qui doit prendre un plaisir non dissimulé, à mon avis. l'émotion est intacte, l'œuvre est respectée, l'intonation est excellente, c'est du pur plaisir de l'écouter.

Agreed. Kaufmann also shoves his larynx down and sounds like he has a golf ball in his mouth. Bernheim has such a beautifully produced sound and it's focused and elegant. Nothing is forced or strained.

Ça fait six mois que j’essaye de chanter cette chanson à la perfection c’est très très difficile en tant que ténor mais j’arrive c’est trop bien. Je vais chanter dans une église à la Chapelle la reine au mois de décembre je suis fier de la présenter. Merci à toi Benjamin, c’est grâce à toique j’ai découvert cette chanson
These recordings are crazy thing for opera singers, because until I had opportunity to hear mister Bernheim in from hall recording, I was thinking he has beautiful sweet voice, but with no size and weight. But, of course, he has big voice, real lyric tenor with great timbre. If you want to know how somebody sings - go to opera house

❤❤❤👏👏👏Bravo!!!!!! Just saw him at the MET on 3/27 in Romeo et Juilette. He already took Europe by storm and won 2020 Europe Opera Award for Best Male Singer. His debut at the MET was delayed by two years due to COVID. He has a beautiful voice and his high notes are solid and thrilling. He also sings with a lot of sensivity. I am so glad he finally trusted his own voice and didn’t quit singing after struggling for a number of years. I already watched all three of his full operas posted on UA-cam and bought his two CDs. Can’t wait to see and hear more of his performances.

Wonderful! It's so rare to find a singer nowadays who has both a beautiful voice and understands French style. Of course, Kaufmann and Beczala and others are great in this role, but they approach it from a different stylistic perspective.

Unquestionably, young Mr. Bernheim has a remarkable lyric-tenor voice. This was taped during a rehearsal, so we assume but can't be sure that he had done vocalises to warm the voice. To my ears, his voice sounds "dry" and in the forte passages he sounds as if he's forcing. As a comparison I'd suggest hearing an earlier French tenor, Georges Thill, who was filmed rehearsing with a pianist:

Over his shoulder for much of this, that brass instrument appears to be a cimbasso which produces those lowest tones.

Lorsque l'on chante en Français, il convient d'éviter de ne pas prononcer les nasales car elles sont dénuées d'harmoniques. Ce défaut donne différentes couleurs dans la voix alors que le chanteur doit au contraire n'en avoir qu'une, homogène, composée de voyelles ouvertes très riches en harmoniques.
Solution : prononcer à la place des nasales des voyelles ouvertes comme "O" et "A".

Voix forcée, mauvaise attaque de certains passages, variations désagréables dans la voix ... et il a l'air soulagé d'avoir fini ce qui prouve qu'il n'est pas à l'aise... je suis loin de l'enthousiasme des autres commentaires.
