    I was the lead artist on this game, definitely had a troubled development, and we wished we'd had more time to refine it. But still feel pretty proud of what we accomplished in the short time we had. Can't believe this was 20 years ago now, where has the time gone! Oh and the game was originally called "Bad Custard", but the marketing department was worried about some countries even knowing what custard was and in France it would have been translated to "Evil Cream", which would have been odd. :) p.s. I was also the lead artist on Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, also on PSOne.

    • @themojogamer75
      @themojogamer75 3 роки тому +45

      Yoo, I grew up with the original Croc. Nice work there and nice work on the art of Kingsley.
      Also yeah, Evil Cream would have been INCREDIBLY problematic I can imagine. Kinda interesting though how the game was named after the antagonist originally, since I tend to notice more kid friendly games name the game after their lead.
      Outta curiosity, do you still work in the games industry or have you since moved from it?

      I feel like this would've been a game well-remembered if you had half a year more of development time. The general presentation and ideas tick all the boxes for me, it's just that the towns needed more substance and less linearity.

    • @scottb9239
      @scottb9239 3 роки тому +40

      @@FakYuhGoogel Yes, I agree, I joined the game after a year of it already being in development and it was in bad shape. I was tasked to try to tidy it up and get it into a workable product with a pretty short timeline as they didn't want to spend much more money on it, was a tough job but considering how little time we had I think we did ok within the constraints.

    I kinda like the interpretation that this whole game is just the fox character playing, imagining the whole adventure. That's why the whole setup is what it is, and he's imaging the people he knows from the castle as part of the adventure. He is just a kid after all, hence he'd be drawn to the idea of a "true knight" like it means something without questioning how ridiculous it'd be to make a young child a knight and send them all over the kingdom to deal with dangerous tasks.
    Or maybe it's meant to be seen as a harmless saturday morning cartoon setting, they usually have these sorts of setups too, despite how little sense they make.

I live in Japan and it can get lonely sometimes, but following you on Twitter and on UA-cam has been such a great way for me to just unwind after a stressful day. Your humor, positivity, and more go a very long way in helping me. I think you're one of the best gaming UA-camrs out there. This is thanks to your honesty, snappy writing, and easiness to relate to. How have I never heard of this game? It's freaking beautiful! It might have the best-looking art design of its generation outside of the Spyro games. This is the game I remember watching an older kid play on a family cruise when I was about 5 years old. Had no experience with video games (grew up with edutainment) and was totally mesmerised by how you could interact with the 3D world around you. "What happens if you go in the water? Can you go over there?". All I remembered from it was a fox on a beach, blue water and some bridges and huts. I still remember the intense curiosity and sense of adventure... and how I never was allowed to play it. My older sister got a couple of minutes tho. But now I fricking have the answer to a life long question.

    While most knights were born into their role (a role they obviously trained to actually survive in) the few that go there through hard work basically did just get a bunch of stuff. You fight as a peasant for a bit until you've looted a mostly functional and mostly fitting suit of mail and a decent helmet so you can fight as a man at arms where you can then earn money from going to war, and if you are sufficiently capable you can earn enough to properly modify your mail, maybe buy some plate and proper weapons, and eventually go into proper service as a knight.
    As for this game I remember reading an interview about the game on their website (yes, they had a website) which went on about how the creator's favourite part was this refrigerator which had talking vegetables inside, but that fridge is inaccessible in a locked cell in the final dungeon area... The game already felt hilariously unfinished, but I'd really like to know just how much was left out if the creator's favourite part hit the cutting room floor.

    From what I understand the original concept for the game was for the whole thing to look like the opening cinematic. There was also supposed to be some kind of female companion character to go with the comment about Kingsley being shy around girls, but something happened during the development with funding the game and it turned into... well that. Honestly it's a fun, cute game that is honestly a gem all things considered, but it could have been a lot more. Still, glad I still own a copy from when I was 7.

    "And what is up with this credits music!?" "This sounds like something from an EDM concert not a medieval game!" What were Pygnosis best known for again? That's right, the WipE'out" series with it's incredible electronic OST! I actually went to check the soundtrack to see if it was composed by Tim Wright who if I remember correctly was Studio Liverpool's in-house composer;
    Kingsley's Adventure was actually developed by Psygnosis's Studio Camden and the composing credit goes to one "Lindsay Alistair" for that bumpin' track, however WipE'out" had been around for four years before Kingsly so maybe Lindsay caught that bug.

    Yesss! Back to obscure 3D platformers, thats the kind of content I dig. Don't get me wrong, your Mario series was very well done, I watched all the episodes of it, but they don't i nterest me much as games. Btw Nitro, if you happen to have a PAL version of the ps2, there are lots of PAL (Europe) region only 3d platformers! Asterix & Obelix XXL: Mission Las Vegum and Evil Twin: Chronicles are some of the best examples! Love the videos, keep em comin!

    Oh my God, I'm certain I had this on some sort of demo disk when I was a kid, stumbled across this video by random chance and I thought I recognised the gameplay, then the title screen music confirmed it. That's nuts.

    Honestly, this is probably one of my favorite games ever, but you do bring up valid points. Tbh, if I didn't play this game when I was 3 I probably would hate it. Gotta admit though, the music is pretty damn good.
    Nice review!

    Grew up with this game and loved it (bit of context - I never played Zelda as a kid) - fully agree with your points though. Great review! Only wished you mentioned the music throughout the game (which I think is excellent - I still listen to it on UA-cam everyone now and then).

    Hey! Somebody remembers this game! Instalike! :D It was a game of my childhood,it's sad it's more limited than I thought. Maybe they didn't want to emulate Zelda but to create their own version of Zelda. Thank you for the video!

    Im actually really happy that ypu reciewed this game. My mother and I loved playing this game. We always liked adventure/plattforming games. We were big Croc/Croc 2 fans and played most of these games on ps1. I honestly played most games you reviewed, so its fun to revisit these games, but lets be honest I watch all your vids. Doesnt matter if I played the game or not ^^;
