Yes I forgot about the Eggman's badniks in the other pyramid levels holding animals inside of them, but I'll still believe in my heart those robots having animals was a reference to Gamma

The thing about the robot with the animal inside is that more or less all Badniks contain animals, be they in the classic series or those of the Adventure duology; that said, the DESIGN of the robot certainly seems to be a nod to Gamma and his brothers - they're even called E-1000

@@zoomzike It's easy to forget that Pyramid Cave has a four-way struggle going on basically, Sonic is fighting Eggman's robots, GUN, and the ghosts, but all of those should logically be against each other too. A shame we never see them actually clash.

The spring on that pole that's impossible to hit is there because originally it was possible.
In the DC version, the poles' collision type (the invisible shape surrounding the object that sonic collides with) was cylinder (flat top). The spring could be hit there.
I guess the devs didn't like how Sonic could also walk on top of these things that shot fire, so they changed the collision type to capsule. The rounded top of this capsule collision covers the spring entirely, making it impossible to hit by any means.

I have to admit, all of the good design in this level was completely lost on me unlike the previous sonic levels.
Perhaps the only thing that I understood about this level before is where to use bounce bracelet.
I recall running up the sides and seeing the hoops but not seeing much point in trying to jump through them.
I honestly didn't even know certain things increased your score until I started watching your videos.

This level is probably the most fun to watch speedruns for. You get a ton of chances to exploit the super bounce and the best part is there's a skip that allows you to bypass doing that stupid key section. Unfortunately, I can't figure out exactly how to do it cause it looks like you just place yourself in a certain spot and spin dash your way to clip through a door.

  • @KildroneInfinite

Something to consider about the key section is that, they actually do serve a minor narrative purpose. The key's aren't part of the pyramid normally, they have Eggman's symbol on it. In other words, I think it is supposed to evoke Eggman purposefully trying to slow Sonic down and annoying him.

  • @theinsanegamer1024

Maybe you could use the key as a homing point, so you can attack an enemy, throw it into a platform mid air, and home in on it to safely land on it, then pick it up and continue. Or maybe the key can work as a shield, so if you can't die as easily while holding it, and instead just drop it. Maybe there's some weird magic the key has and while it makes you slower and jump lower, your jump works like a hover, allowing you to cross over large pits that you would only otherwise be able to cross with a super spin jump. Good design is giving you something if you have something taken from you. Even Sonic usually does this; you are slower in water BUT you jump quite a bit higher, or can constantly double jump. This though? This was just dumb.

Well, from a lore standpoint I would figure that Dr Eggman probably set up the key puzzle for Sonic to slug through because he knew it would annoy Sonic. Sonic's character never appreciates patience after all, especially not if he's forced into being patient. I would also assume there's some sort of weight to the key that slows down his movement on top of it. And I'm sure it's pointed out here but as for why the robots here have animals instead of the chaos drives? It's simply because these are Eggman's robots and for most games, he always used animals to power his machines. The GUN machines are different. The little pyramid confused me a lot as well, I always assume there was some other use for it, either that or it was a red herring. Also, as for Sonic's lying about finding a way out of the pyramid, since SA2 was a rushed game and the final result wasn't what the game was I meant to actually be, I assume there were a lot of ideas or plans that might have been scrapped but the lines, items and things were not taken out as an oversight. I mean, there are so many levels that you can't even get all the rings for because the zones themselves are incomplete. In truth, I don't think we're ever going to really know what the original plans were for the game beyond it being a sequel to Sonic & Knuckles.

I'm not basing this off anything more than a gut feeling, but the random items you can pick up and carry around in speed stages always felt like part of a puzzle mechanic that was largely scrapped to me. I personally think the key segments were just leftover pieces of it.

I disagree on the key section being that bad. It does add a challenge needing to move around with it and either dodging the robots. As a kid it threw me off at first but then I was relieved I was able to work within the limitations(and had the surprising abillity to trigger the hourglasses with jumps and throw the thing at enemies). It has a strangely endearing design and sound effects too, so I guess the intent is feeling satified to savely escort it. Depends on tastes though. It's something like Zelda games or slower platformers like mario 64 like to do a lot(the infamous mario 64 baby penguin).
This kind of slower puzzle setpiece(adventure 1 also has oddly slow bits) seem to have been mostly dropped in games after this though.

Sonic levels are intentionally designed to be easy to make it through but hard to make it through like a BADASS. The old games did this by making the player feel lame and move slowly if they were bad, but Adventure 2 had the best solution which was the ranking system. Some of these changes are for worse and it’s hard to say if they were done intentionally during the conversion (although this is clearly unintentional), a lot of them might come from oversights during play testing and QA, but it’s just my guess.

Most Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles, & Rouge levels have stuff you can pick up like this. Security Hall has these boxes you can pick up (better done in 2P) what's even cooler is you can set them down on the moving platform & make them float in midair by having a player watch over them so they don't despawn while the other collects more. Dry Lagoon has these small barrels, Wild Canyon has the skulls of some animal laying around, Pumpkin Hill has pumpkins, Human Skulls can be dug up in several stages, Mad Space has an item that's a reference to Phantasy Star Online.
Yes Chao use the same mechanics with you being able to pick up chao or things to give them & perform the same behaviors. You can also pick up Omochao & listen to his reactions. He also says things at random when you carry him on a spring, put him down, or throw him. He also has special lines for each Treasure Hunting & Sonic/Shadow Stage if you carry him when completing your mission. I'm not sure if he says anything if carried into a back ring though & it's speculated whether or not he says the quote if carrying him when walking into the last shard you need or clearing 2nd Missions. You can attack Omochao as any character (not counting mechless Shooters) at least to get various random reactions when he wakes up.

Likely the same reasoning lies in its existence: either mistakenly placed or it was initially attainable but later on in development they made changes that made it impossible and no one noticed.

If the coordinates are also purged, they appear at the position (0,0), which is why a few rings exist in the ports that are worth a lot of them, it's leftovers stacked ontop of each other.

One thing I learned recently is that the pyramid section of the game takes place in Sandopolis, both start by the outside and then go on the inside and enemies such as the ghosts and golems. This would answer a huge continuity error of how there is a desert in San Fransisco and why does Eggman have a rocket in a pyramid. It’s because the real life Angel island was the inspiration for Sonic’s Angel island and (only confirmed in the Japanese version) Angel island permanently came back to Earth since chaos was neutralized which would also answer how rouge was able to steal the master emerald at the beginning of the game. Also I’m surprised you haven’t mentioned the hieroglyphs that show what looks like Sonic-esque people and Knuckles-esque people. In other levels the same sonic looking people are seen praising the master emerald in wild canyon and praising a chao in the secret area of death chamber. Following the Sonic is an alien theory (must watch imo) this implies that Sonic’s race gave the knuckles’ clan the master emerald and chao. Also in the king boom boo fight we see Sonic’s exact face on the wall in a very similar way to how sonic statues appear in hydrocity (they’re even in Sonic Mania). I love this theory since there’s a ton of evidence and hidden details for it that makes me appreciate the games up to SA2 than I did before

I think the purpose of the key sections (or any section in a game that takes away your abilities) is to get the player to think outside the box and force them to be creative and use their relatively limited resources to succeed. Personally, I enjoy chucking the key at the robots and throwing it in the slot at the apex of the ramp. But I will admit, it's the worst section of the level.
(Also, I'm pretty sure Sonic's speed and acceleration are identical whether he's holding the key or not)
