Just to say I'm really pleased that you're someone who's doing very clear &concise tutorials.I've not long moved from Reason 4 up to 12!what a difference.anyway, keep it up.many thanks.Tonescapes
Another great video James. There's so much depth to reason that I'm always grateful for the tips and techniques these videos contain. Thanks!
that background song with the sitar kind of patch is so good that i can't concentrate on the actual tutorial.
James, you alone ought to be the saleman of the year. Beause you prove over and over again that Reason alone is enough to do ANYTHING. Rock on buddy
thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!!!
for the tutorial AND the patch....FREAKIN' AWESOME!!!!!!!!
Once again, James, pure wizardry. Thank you!
terrific video James!!
Awesome vid! I learn so much from each video its amazing!!
I almost had a fit when u didnt play the drop dood
Alex you are now a legend in my eyes
Great info in this video.
Great info!
What perfect explained tutorial ... all thumbs up for that. But just for pitching and filtering the instruments, it's much more simple to just use the mod Wheel instead programming that huge stuff. I fully love to just click on "edit" on any knop and record this know in timeline. In the current 8-bars sample, that is more easy and flexible than programming a combinator.
I will do, cheers James
The master at work.
An interesting approach and a good way to learn routing / cv / combinator techniques. However, I think I could get reasonably close using layers and automation.
thanks for the usefull tips !!!
thank you J.B. :)
Hi james.. I just fucking LOVE your tutorials and the fact that up throw up the patches and sometimes the rns file to learn from... It is just fucking priceless. I love you man pure and fucking simple ;@) Sincerely Max (Denmark) bye the way im integrating my son in the studio and he just love this shit he he he... Love ya man.
the patch is a Mac file and it will not load because i use PC/Windows... i tried to follow but its pretty fast and when i get to the combiner/program part i see no thor options to set anything... not sure what im doing wrong but im follow step by step and nothing. is there a PC version to this patch?
I wanna know where to get that drum loop and that awesome guitar sound... both guitars actually.
very cool audio quality --64bit-- and cyber studio for home musicians. I wish I had this when I was about 14 yo!
Thanks, I've ALWAYS, wanted this sound...now, how do we get the drums to crescendo and alter the pitch too?
James, thank you for the great tip! I have one question though: I'm completing something in Version 4 at the moment, and the combis there don't have cv inputs, so is there a workaround? Maybe involve the Matrix and use that for filter frequency? Any advice from anyone much appreciated.
@maxtakkojoe don't know.. I have not named it yet.. Just a little tune I was working on.
I would absolutely love to know What the hell Im doing! Love the video just amazing stuff!
1. Funny you should ask that. It's because the Malstrom Filter Env yielded longer attack/decay times than I could get with Thor! Believe me.. I tried it out.
2. Not sure.. put the request in to Sound Technology and Absolute Music and maybe we can make it happen again! I will be coming over to the UK again this summer though.
I'm just wondering why you tinkered with the decay faders on the envelope, i mean isn't it useless anyway since your sustain is at maximum brightness and volume?
Ty! How do I speed the sweep up?
You could use the same CV out that is connected to the CV 1 input of the Combinator in this example, and split it using a Spider CV Merger/Splitter. Put the device that plays the drums (Kong/ReDrum/Rex player/NN-XT/NN-19) into a Combinator, connect a CV split out to the CV input of that new Combi and set it as a source & the pitch of the drum device as the target. It would follow the same sweep speed. Or.. just draw in some pitch bend automation (that what I did in this song).
@ PropellerheadSW any chance you could do a video on how to make breakdowns with like taking a drum loop and do something with the kick drum repeatedly?
Cheers James, great tutorial. Two questions:
1. Why did you use a malstrom and not the thor envolopes for the filter envolope? Could you not send out the signal from the thors CV outputs and achieve the same results?
2. About a year ago you did a reason workshop at absolute music in Poole, uk which I attended. Any plans on doing another this year in the same area?
Cheers
Went thru this twice and everything seems set up right according to the tutorial, but the pitch doesn't raise. The only way I found around it was switching the programmer settings from CV input to Rotary input and automating the rotary. any suggestions?
love that bass line in the beginning. how?
wow. the second song in the background is really good, really deep. where can i get it?
Is there a specific reason you used a Malström's filter envelope for this patch? Is there a quality to Malstöm's envelope that is different to Thor or Subtractor's filter envelope? Or is this just a go to preference in your personal workflow?
enemene22 I think from my experience at least, the Maelstrom filter envelope attack duration is a lot longer than the Thor one. The mods are all a bit different on each synth.
Why couldn't you use the Filter Env from Thor rather than hooking up the Mal?
I followed the tut step by step, but at 03:21, my programmer didn't show Malstrom as the 4th device. I did connect the cable from Malstrom's Filter Envelope to Combinator's CV1. Anyone knows why? Thanks!
I cant get ti to load into a Combinator as a patch or anything...saved it to ,y desktop so I know its there. Whats the prob??!!??
Hey, i´m also a new user, i followed every single step, but i have nothing in my combinator programmer section, there´s no device at all!
What is wrong?
why did you use the malstöm mod env and not the thor mod env? any differences there?
James, can you share the bass setup as we can hear in the first 30 seconds? :)
I actually prefer doing all the lane automatons so I can control it more precisely. It probably takes less time than setting up the cables (right click -> automation lane -> two click for the ramp), and less time to adjust it to be just the right curve for your track. Also if you pump it put a delay on it, sounds nice, or have two filters with a high resonance (80-100, guessing) for the same noise with different frequencies, creates a cool effect.
what is the name of the tune which runs beside the tutorial (from 0:52)
Thanks James - cool man.
Do u Have any tutorials for Rock/Metal styles?
We're not All Techno Dance people - Bobkat.
What is this song? I love it!
still wondering about that bassline :) what patch is it? :D
hey JB love these freebies you give out but this one won't load/open on my combinator. its simply not in the folder that i put it in when trying to get it from a combinator. Am i stupid or what?
You got to load it as an Effect not as an instrument :-)
Erm i think you have showed your class there fella.God that was too easy to get ya
Hello, this is Jane from Propellerhead Software.
im embarrassed to post this and i do apologize for been a lil slow, im new to reason... but i downloaded the patch but i cant seem to make it show up in the reason program... its in my reason folder as two files... where do i go from there?
I would add a sidechain with that effect :D I like. Can you do 52 more tips!!!!??? Or one of them month long interview things :D they were really helpfull :D
What I like most about this video is I haven't got a clue what's happening
I cannot load the files , Im on reason windows , Reason 5 ?
I have tried to load Mac and Windows files as instrument or effect, no files chose up !
Any Idea ?
At the intro of the video, dread took over me as I saw him scroll through a skyscraper of racks.
cant load this in reason 5. anyone know why?
Nice one :) very tight
good, thnks
I got a slight headache after watching this.
isn't reason 6 almost same as reason 5? but it has record?
Can you show us how to make your track stereo in the most effective way there is, without using stuff as the Haas effect?
the most effective way is the haas effect
Once you do it you can just save it. Its a bit of programming but thats the fun of it!!
thanks
What if I want it to be faster
i had to open a combinator first, then open the patch. it wouldn't work if I tried to 'create instrument' .
Yeah Right :D and once its Made you can save it and tweek it to fit any song :D to be honest some people spend ages looking for a sample to fit their track. when u might aswell mke ya own :D
i followed every step twice still cant get it to work ???????????
this is a great video james thank you
Went I put it in reason 9 its make no sound
wow thanks dood
This can be done much easier with one Subtractor.
Cool
is it just me or does this not work?, ive tried the sample song and everything and im not getting squat.
There's got to be an easier way to do this.
There certainly is... Which also seems like a way that allows for more control.
yeah just sample....they sound better too
when you once build a patch, you can use it and experiment with... way more things to do than with a sample :)
Haha, holy cow! I created synths on Thor that sound like Deadmaus, Skrillex and what not with way lesser steps. Just download or sample people if you don't want to follow all these steps.
I have some rock tips in reason on my channel, if rock is your thing. Look for the 5 min song starter. ; )
Is it just me or is Jame's voice a little distorted?
Reason 9 doesn't let me create a line mixer, do I have to download it or is there a newer way to do this?
Line Mixers are in Reason's Utility folder of devices on the left hand browser side. /ryan
Thanks Ryan, was a little different from the last version I'd used. Peace!
No prob and welcome back to Reason v9! :) /ryan
What's it to you?
To be honest. It’s soooo much easier to just use some riser samples.
Having said that...this tutorial did show me some use for the spider merger / splitter. 👍🏻
using someone else's work is ALWAYS easier :( Do you walk away feeling like you've achieved anything though?!
swoooosh
so many folks bitching that this is too many steps.. here is one, hire a producer to do it for you. good grief!
turbulus Agree. The good is thing about these tutorials also is that they also teach about how some of the tools, e.g. cv splitters can actually be used.
you can download the zip file too you moany bar stewards 😂
Great turtorial James, but please, slow it down!
how was that too fast..
I wish I could afford Reason 6 :(
But I don't think I could ever get bored of reason 5 haha
How dull are you?
well now, how uncomplicated was that : /
lol - my brain hurts now
great tutorial! but damn thats so fast
so much of this just bounced off my face. but that's what I get for never having used reason.
Did you click on the "Show Programmer" button?
Someone else noticed the song's name is: eating cheese..?
at the moment the only place you could get it would be if you stole my laptop. It's just a song idea I was working on.
GIRST! :P
using the pause helps because you are fast but man when I have to search to get to the window you are on it's slow going.
I finally get to the window with the combi programmer and the screen doesn't show the instruments. The screen with the keyboard and you start to adress the thor 1 synth.
what now?
Great you're trying to show the less experienced but even with pause it's not clear
5:11 gotta go fast
Honestly how would a newbie know how to do all these? Seems quite complex
A good place to start is actually the user manual, Propellerheads are very, very good at not only explaining how their tools work, but also why they work and what purpose they are for. For example, the Subtractor manual entry also explains a fair bit about how subtractive synthesis works.
Really? I did not notice..
ehhh. while electronic music is easy to produce on reason, some of us use it to make alternative rock or orchestra music. The possibilities are endless as I am learning more about reason. Dance is just a subgenre that happens to be very popular in today's youth.
You know damn well what I mean.
