The Infanta, for the couple of people who don't know, is played by actress Miriam Margolyes who is best known in the US as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter series. Based on some of her more recent interviews, she is far more eccentric in real life than any role she's played on stage or screen, including this one.
And the interpreter is professor slughorn

It's Jim Broadbent that makes this whole episode even more hilarious. His almost deadpan translation in that comedy accent just makes me laugh. He appears as a voice in the (quite literal) climax of the episode which makes it riotously funny. It also reminds me a little bit of Felix Dexter's 'preacher' character in Fifteen Storeys.
Fantastic scene. I must have watched it dozens of times in the 30 odd years since it was made, and it never fails to crack me up.

This episode is probably the best one of the series. The part in the end where Edmund gets married is also priceless when the bride breaks down in (unscripted) laughter.

I have had the honor of sampling quite a few wines over the years and I have to say that a full bodied Spanish red is a very good option for a cold winters night. Don't settle for a pale wine with a strong bouquet but shallow taste profile, they can become tiresome very quickly and are often overpriced.... 😉

This series took place at about the same time the Spanish retook Iberia from the Moors.
the best bit is when the portcullis comes down on his bedroom door.
One of my favorite episodes, eclipsed only by the medieval codpieces Blackadder and Co sported when the Archbishop dropped by for a visit.
Best episode of the first series. Me and my mum proper laughed at the translator when we watched this ep yesterday!

Am I the only person who would probably go with the infanta? She's only about 35 and seems to know what she's doing. It's the only way to go. The alternative is marrying that 10yo and holding off for several years if you want to do the halfways decent thing.

Actress is called Charlie Dean. Scant info, except had a minor part in The Bill (didn't they all?), and some obscure BBC historical drama called Artists and Models. Nothing after '86.
