"the Russian royal family, mistaken for bison, due to their excessive winter clothing, and hunted down, chopped to pieces and eaten as little sweets by Mongolian bandits?"
It's honestly a shame Brian Blessed didn't want to come back for another Blackadder. Can you IMAGINE him in Blackadder Goes Forth? ...Actually never mind. If he was in Blackadder Goes Forth, the Germans would all have run away in the first ten minutes.
Alex Quill Now I'm picturing him on the screen as the never onscreen Field Marshall alongside Steven Fry cracking jokes at the enlisted mens' expense... ... *LOUDLY* .
Love Jim Broadbent as the translater in this. Interesting(ish) fact: He and Miriam Margolyes (the spanish infanta) both ended up at Hogwarts as professors Slughorn amd Sprout.
Considering how smart Baldrick is in the first series has anybody noticed the insult to the injury, when the interpreter says (well, translates for the Infanta) "Don't hold back, please, my little worm." ? :D
@antster1983 Seguro! It's a variation of many an American joke about sex, with climax being compared to reaching home plate- denoted by the umpire yelling our for all to hear, "Safe!"
@@steveetienne Yeah I agree. I think Series 2-4 had more consistent episodes in terms of humour, whereas Series 1 had the odd off episode, but when the first series was on song, it was the funniest.
IMO, it was Ben Elton that made the difference for season 2+. The jokes in season 1 are, in the main, too obvious. The Queen of Spain’s Beard and The Witchsmeller Pursuivant are the Season 1 standouts, not least because of the quality of the guest appearances. “Oh Edmund my love” and “Again, please!” are great lines tho’.
Brian blessed, Rowan Atkinson, Miriam Margolyes and Jim Broadbent are all so funny. Even the scene in the darkness.😅 Especially when the interpreter said again please. Well done Jim
Of course, even if Edmund had known that only one of them had to be a virgin and had taken action to lose his own virginity, it still wouldn't have got him out of the marriage to Leia!
Anyone else think she's where all the intelligence and cunning in that line came from? She seems a lot more like the other Blackadders in personality than her husband, ruthless, intelligent, and practical.
Edmund from Blackadder II comes from an illegitimate line, so he's definitely not descended of Leila. He's referred to as Edmund's bastard great (great) grandson.
It's basically said in the video description. Blackadder (Rowan Atkinson) doesn't want to marry the Spanish princess because she's fat, small and ugly and he's trying to find any possible way to avoid the wedding. He realises that for the marriage to be valid she has to be a virgin, so he sends his servant Baldrick to take care of that. Because it's dark in the room she wouldn't recongnize Baldrick and mistakes him for Blackadder.
On the contrary, I think it is better than the next three. Of course, it is also very different, but to me the other series come across as slightly too cheesy, with Blackadder being far too obnoxious and irritating. But hey ho.
It was deliberate - Baldrick goes from rather clever in series one and becomes progressively more stupid. Blackadder goes in the opposite direction, although his social status declines - a prince in season one, he is only an army captain by season four.
The 1st season was good, but 2-4 were way better. Ben Elton replaced Rowan as a writer for 2 and changing Blackadder into the clever one and Balderick into the idiot worked better. Also I think bringing back Rowan Tim and Tony worked and bringing in Miranda Richardson, Stephen Fry and Patsy Burne as new characters worked well and Hugh Laurie for 3 and 4.
Ah the first series of black adder. There was so much potential, a lot of bits with really great writing. Shame it never meshed together too well. It's amazing though the difference between the series, good thing the poor reviews of the first series didnt stop them making more black adder. Wouldn't have wound up with the master pieces that are the 2nd 3rd and 4th series.
Nonsense. The first series of Blackadder is widely regarded as the funniest and best written of all of the program's run as it was fresh and innovative. The following series, whilst still being funny suffered from the same problem most successful tv shows are infected with, namely repetitive format and jokes. Not to mention that the 2 legends, Peter Cook and Prince Vultan Blessed elevated the first series far beyond the others.
@@glen7318 The first series was rather hit and miss - some episodes were funnier than others. There was also some character variations in Blackadder himself - mostly a fool in the first season, in some episodes like "The Archbishop" he displays some of the cunning shown in later seasons. I would say there was more consistency in the later ones.
“Oh Edmund, my love” is one of my favourite comedy lines in history.
that explains the baldrick descendants
"the Russian royal family, mistaken for bison, due to their excessive winter clothing, and hunted down, chopped to pieces and eaten as little sweets by Mongolian bandits?"

Not too far off. They got suffocated to death under the boards of a feasting table and its victorious mongolians.

Trivium : In the final few seconds you can here Brian Blessed say to the crew 'that was much better', referring to the take.
I can't hear it... K.x.
Oh yeah! It’s very faint, but I heard it!
When all this took place I was just thinking throughout this scene, "Poor Baldrick."
Same .
0:19 Does someone else love that noise that happens whenever Blackadder gets an idea?
(Not to mention his badass laugh)
It's called a vibraslap.
Love Jim Broadbent as the translater in this.
Interesting(ish) fact: He and Miriam Margolyes (the spanish infanta) both ended up at Hogwarts as professors Slughorn amd Sprout.
Huh, I didn't know that.
She also played Juliet's nanny in Romeo & Juliet, the Lurhman version
Don't worry, Baldrick. Percy's Elizabethan descendant suffered much worse.
But at least that came with a job offer in the Anglican Church.
Baldrik: but.. I'm not a virgin!
Black adder: oh yeh? Who'd you lose it to
Baldrick: you don't know her. She lives in canada.
❓

Oh lordy! I was SO hoping to see that shot of Baldrick, all beat to hell after his rendezvous with the Infanta! XD It's so damn funny!!
Again please 😂
The best episode of season 1.
"Oh Edmund, my love"
"Don't hold back, please my little one"
Those lines make this episode
"Again please!"
2:39 - that's brilliant!
Baldrick, like the poor ostrich, died for nothing.
2:14 Kind of glad he considers every eventuality - what you want in a leader, even one who's stark raving mad
The Spanish Infanta is not a virgin. The funniest line in history😅
