Hahaha, has anybody noticed the great harmony that occurs at 2:22 when someone in the audience screams a G in excitement while Chris Potter is resting on a Bb?
Killer...the horns are so into it, but rhythm section is sick too - what great bass & piano solos by Francois Moutin & Ron Assaf, and great Kendrick Scott. Dude who thinks Lovano can't play is real clueless - sounding like Alex Hoffman on Wayne Shorter.
@@ViziaFilms He has played Smalls Jazz club a couple of times in the last 3 years, sporting a big, dark, impenetrable beard, and somewhat hard to recognize. He sounds more or less like a classic cool bop clone, nothing more nothing less. But besides that....I have no clues
How can anyone who can hear enough to know that Potter is killing not also recognize that Lovano is killing? Dis Lovano while you're standing next to me at the bar, though. Please. ;)
some dudes don't understand dynamics. Lovano was literally having a rhythmic conversation with the percussionist. and you never of the tonal center, that solo was impressive
Now that you can listen to UA-cam videos at half speed (click on settings! I heard it doesn't work on mac's though...) Just wow. Hearing every note go by with time slowed down is just ridiculously profound.
Man that's so hot. Scott lays a comfy mattress, while Potter and Lovan make sweet musical love. I dunno who the bass and piano are but they're chocolate cake on a long day tasty.
I don't really blame Roy for getting off toward the end of his solo. I've played with Lovano enough to know that sometimes I forget what planet I'm on let alone exactly where in the form I am. I usually just want to quit blowing so I can hear him play some more.
A criticism of many jazz artists, from both others and one-self, is being too much, "in your own head." Check out what happens at 1:20-1:22 in this awesome video. Potter plays a wonderful altissimo minor line starting on beat 4 of measure 6 of the second A section over the Bb minor. Chris shakes his own head 'no' several times at the same moment Lovano and the crowd react very positively with verbal "Ohs!" Be careful with self judgement. Why play real improvised jazz if it isn't to create energy and enjoyment with and among other people? Chris is totally killing and shaking his head no several times during his solo. He would increase the flow and energy exchange if he would avoid the negative nod and/or be more open to the increase. He doesn't have anything to fear, it's not like he'll get lost or play something lame. In contrast, notice how Lovano releases the mouthpiece during rests and moves affirmatively with his body language. He's freed up and plays tons of creative ideas, especially his time feel, while strolling with Kendrick. GREAT STUFF!
Any one notice at 1:50 they play the a two times in a row but I guess doesn’t care I woulda been like noooo piano u lay out I got this I never let someone thro me off the form you gotta stop playing and come back when you know with a doubt
Yes, the pianist took the first A again. It's remarkable how the entire band shifted pretty seamlessly and acted like everything was fine. This speaks to how "in the moment" they are and their adroit professionalism.
3:30+ It's nice to see these pros doing a pickup gig have to stop and figure out amongst themselves who is going next, and not have every transition be seamless. :)
You know 🤔 contemplating these videos for a while, I’ve come to a possible (debatable) conclusion, that the rhythm section here whilst undeniably killing, aren’t really good at supporting a player like Joe. Potter has a great way of getting inside everyone’s else’s blood stream, but joe is just ...doing his thing, and is like - you can hang or you can’t...ya dig? Like these guys are playing their quarter note feel way too straight and gridded for joes thing to really sing. He’s thinking abstract - felt like a weak decision for the piano and bass to drop out for joe. And you can tell he does know the straight thing, - moment when he tells Kendrick clear where the time is, but these motherfuckers are getting in his way!
Indescriptible e intranscriptible. Un momento de músicos monstruosos que dan ganas de vivir y pensar en que merece la pena invertir y en que no. Más cultura y menos armas. Si mis bellos están como escarpias no me imagino la sensación de ese público...
but lovano pretends gravity doesn't excist, and thinks he gets away with his pretending because hardly anybody hears, which is mostly true for most people. but a few do hear and recognize his nonsense.
lovano is such a clown, he has no real clue how to play jazz. just big pretending on all sides. no idea why potter, who is a real and superb player on all levels teams up with such a character.
somebody who thinks lovano is killing cant have a serious clue why potter is so good. lovano and potter two complete different things. not much change we would end up in the same bar listening to music. what you consider music is what i hear as pretending to play jazz. when you can really hear the nature of jazz is as clear and as simple as let say gravity.
Hahaha, has anybody noticed the great harmony that occurs at 2:22 when someone in the audience screams a G in excitement while Chris Potter is resting on a Bb?
+Mathias Heise Yeah, the 9th on F- and Chris plays the 4th. Beatiful suspended chord ;p
yeah, that sounds like a saxophone high note!!!
Probably the best two tenors nowadays (with the permission of Rollins, who is still alive)
😂😂
I thought that it was the saxophone screaming, but then realized Potter wasn't playing that scream, and looked at Lovano and it wan't him either.
I noticed but I do at have perfect pitch so I’m not that detailed... LL
wow ... i guess jazz is still alive, thank God

+tiluriso Thank you for backing up Lovano, one of the best!
Whilst I WILL defer to Lovano's adept musicianship......
What happened to the Hoff? He disapeared into oblivion

everyone is blowing away in that video but Moutin, he's a damn killer !
frederic orsi I wonder why Moutin is so underrated... Saw him live and some of the best bass playing I’ve ever heard in life
You can feel how intense the vibe is just by the first 10 seconds. Man, they're grooving hard. Awesome video!
I know dude. It’s insane. It annoys me when people think jazz is supposed to be “relaxing.” But this is some of the most intense music I’ve ever heard
Kendrick sounds like the illegitimate child of Buddy Rich and Elvin Jones. He has the best qualities of both, remarkable. My favorite drummer alive.
Now that you can listen to UA-cam videos at half speed (click on settings! I heard it doesn't work on mac's though...) Just wow.

the whole band is killing but OMG François Moutin
This might be the most killin thing I’ve ever seen
2:52 is insane
Isn't all of it?
Rico Jones Yeeeeeeaaaaaaahhhhh!!! That idea is not from this world!!!
Man that's so hot. Scott lays a comfy mattress, while Potter and Lovan make sweet musical love. I dunno who the bass and piano are but they're chocolate cake on a long day tasty.
Wow! That last chorus of Chris Potters starting at around 2:53! whew!
I don't really blame Roy for getting off toward the end of his solo. I've played with Lovano enough to know that sometimes I forget what planet I'm on let alone exactly where in the form I am. I usually just want to quit blowing so I can hear him play some more.
Back again 6 years later for more of this..killin
Chris Potter........woooooo!!! He Is the tenorist!!! Amazing solo!!! He Is a Titan!!
Thank you for this phenamoenal version.
Shit
outstanding !! what a rhythm section!!
lovano seems to enjoy! killer potter ! wow..thanks ..for the energy!!
@SaXDuDe17 the bassist is Francois Moutin and the pianist is Roy Assaf.

Alex, thanks for posting this, it's really great. You asked me on FB, I've been well!
chris chris chris...amazing player!!
Great Video! Thanks a lot!!
Wonderfull Joe Lovano🙏
@Emgune why do you think that? not only was he on form he even quotes the melody in that exact moment haha
OMG!
@Emgune you're absolutely right! and the fact that he quoted the melody made it even clearer xD thanks!
@willshakeyou He made 2 A' consecutively. Moutin and him wasn t on the same place.
that was phenomenal
Nice to hear Lovo on a Bisher Big B for a change...dark n' dry n' dirty..
Any one notice at 1:50 they play the a two times in a row but I guess doesn’t care I woulda been like noooo piano u lay out I got this I never let someone thro me off the form you gotta stop playing and come back when you know with a doubt

WTF! One of my ears just dropped on the floor!
I love how the video starts with Chris absolutely annihilating the end of the B section
3:30+ It's nice to see these pros doing a pickup gig have to stop and figure out amongst themselves who is going next, and not have every transition be seamless. :)
yeah I prefer performances like this instead of when they're planned out. it's more natural that way
Bass solo is nutty
Anyone have full video/recording of Chris Potter’s solo on this??
Hi Cole, not that I know of. But for your info the top of the form is at 0:09 if you want to transcribe :)
I shouldn't have started music
lol that feel, bro, I know it
You mean ''Ups''
how does 3:20 sound so beefy without the bass player playing
The piano player’s heavy bottom voicings
@Isak!
This is brilliant
Beautiful!
Haaaaaaaaaa!
wowww!!
Yawn.....zzzzzz......ZZZZZZ
you are perfectly describing what happens when we read these type of comments :)
Yes!!
