After extensive research there are some do’s and don’ts. Dont top off these hybrids past the first click from when the pump shuts off. If you do, you could potentially cause gas to get sucked theough the vapor system that used in the tank which can cause damage also. Another tip is because this is a much shallower gas tank, try not squeezing the handle fully to quickly fill up the tank, instead, squeeze the pump slightly and put the kickstand on the lowest pump speed possible to prevent splashing and foaming which can trip the sensors prematurely. Once you get to the 9 gallon mark or slightly before that point, stop and let the foam /swell settle down for a good 10 seconds then add more in on the lowest kickstand setting.

I appreciate you doing this video. One of the vehicles we're considering is a 2021 RAV4 Hybrid, and I haven't been able to get a straight answer from anyone about whether the 2021's still have this issue. I agree - it's remarkable that Toyota took this long to fix an issue they're known about for 2 years. Hopefully the 2021's, though, are good to go. Still that lingering thought in my mind, though...
Hi MH. I agree about the lingering doubt in the back of your mind, I feel the same way. After my test I feel better but, I’m still not a 100% certain I’m good to go. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video, just purchased an 2021 XSE trim RAV 4 a couple days ago fresh off the boat, will have to keep an eye on this issue with fingers crossed that all goes well.
@@kamikazekrunch8363 Still haven't filled the tank for the first yet, only driven it +250 miles since I got it last month, still showing about 1/2 tank left. When I got it the RAV4, it showed a range of over 500 miles to empty.

2021 Hybrid XLE. I purchased it new 10 months ago and already put in 21,780 miles. For me on average I have gotten between 460-480mi on a tank. 90% of the time I fill around 10-20 miles pass the “refuel now” message and it usually takes 11.7-12.7 gallons. Recently I reached the refuel now message and decided to fill up, I am glad I did because for the first time it took 14.367 gallons. After that I was able to drive 577 miles. Filled up with 9 miles till empty and it only took 12.04 gallons! I am going to see what happens after I go through this tank full. I may need to take it to the dealership. 🤷🏻♂️
@coffeeoverdose I did take it to the dealership. They said that’s normal, that if takes less than 10.5 gallons there is a problem. Then I said how do you explain the mileage I got and they said it can vary and it will never be the same at full up bull shit. Pretty much they didn’t care. Since then I’ve noticed that if the ground at the pump I fill up is slopped down towards the front of the vehicle, it takes more than usual and longer range. I typically drive 120-130 miles before the indicator reaches the F line. Today I filled up 43 miles pass the refuel message for a total of 534 miles. It took 12.024 gallons. This particular pump was mostly flat and not the usual one I go to which I can fill up more. 🤷🏻♂️ I don’t care what the dealership says but I know something is not right.
Bud, am I glad I came across your channel and this series! Thanks for bringing this up... it is no small issue, for sure!! Right now (9/10), I am waiting on delivery of our brand-spanking-new, 'last-off-the-factory-floor' for the 2021 model year RAV4 XLE Premium Hybrid, arriving 9/20, if all goes well. We really appreciate you doing this review series, and I'm looking forward to viewing the rest! (And yes, I hit the Like and Subscribe buttons! )
Just filled my 21 Hybrid for the first time. It was made in Sept so I had "some" hope. I'm fortunate in that I think it's been fixed in the late year cars. I got down to 30 DTE when the light came on. Had to drive 15 miles to a station where I was able to put 13 gallons (12.9) in (to the click only) and the new DTE read 580 which is what it was when I drove it off the lot. Time will tell, but I'm more confident than I was. I had a 2019 XSE (long story) and it definitely had the problem as the DTE never read more than 420 after filling it.
I own a GX hybrid built June 2021 when I picked it up from the dealership it showed 961 klm to empty on my first fill up it showed 950 klm to empty and then on my second fill up it showed 918 klm until empty i dread to think it be on my next fill up
my 2019 Rav4 XLE only fill up 10 gallons at a time and only run 420miles to empty. I have 41.9 MPG.I feel like I'm on my way to the gas station every day. And my dealer didn't admit there was a problem.
If you take your mileage of 37.1 and multiply it by 14 you get 519 mile range. If your mileage is 40, you get a range of 40 x 14 = 560. The reason your range is down is because of the mileage, not the amount of fuel in the tank. It’s common for car manufacturers to leave a couple extra gallons in the tank when the gage reads empty so people do not get stranded. Your gage read 1/4 but it was probably at 1/3. It doesn’t appear like your have the problem.
The tank is fine. When you have a 14.5 gallon tank and you fill up after hitting 1/4 tank mark, you should only be able to fill about 10.0 gallons. Toyota has acknowledged that some of these cars have a faulty fuel sending unit. That explains why some people see their tanks as empty, but there is actually still 4 gallons in the tank... so it will only take about 10.0 gallons, even though you thought the tank was empty (when it still has 4 gallons in it!).
I think I have this problem in my 2022 Highlander Hybrid awd. I'm averaging 33.5 mpg and getting about 470 miles per 17.1 gallon tank. I should be getting about 570. Anyone else have this problem on their Highlander Hybrid?
If its right when the fuel light comes up, remember there is about a 2 gallon reserve once youbare empty that is unused. Its there to prevent damage if you run completely out of gas i believe.
Thank you for posting this video, great stuff! After a month or so do you see any changes in the fill-up behavior? Is it still taking (what appears to be) a full tank?
Hi Joe, so I currently have 2,500 miles on my RAV4 Hybrid. I have been driving it since December, when I fill up my dash shows 530ish miles of range so I do not feel that I have the fuel tank problem. Thanks for watching!
I have a 2021 Toyota Rav hybrid. It was fine first couple thousand. Now, at 10,000 i can not get more that a couple gallons, unless I lift nozzle off receptacle and pump manually. I can actually see the hole to tank flex. Im lucky we have a good dealership, and they just ordered whole new tank assembly. Hopefully this will take care of issue.
If you had the problem, there is no way you'd be able to put almost 10 gallons in a 1/4 full tank. People with the problem could barely get 10 gallons on a practically empty tank. I'm guessing that your lower mileage is due to a winter blend of gas. Your range is still above 500. You're golden.
@The Comeback Kid i am noticing that people with a newer manufacturing date on the 2021’s are not having an issue. Check to see when your vehicle was made, if it was made late december of 2020 or newer, they didnt have the issue, but any make before those dates had an issue.
I can’t get passed 430 I did the first like 4 fills after I bought it now I was told the mpg but I had almost 40mpg and it was lower distance to empty then when I had lower like 36mpg so I don’t know what’s up with these tanks but I have the same problem
I had a similar result today when I filled up my 2021 Rav4 hybrid at about 1/4 to the empty mark. Similar to what has shown in this video, my Rav4 was able to take a bit over 10 gallons. So I guess my 2021 Rav4 hybrid doesn't have a fuel tank problem also.
Same issue here RAV4 hybrid 2021, I noticed this issue since the beginning but I thought it would fix with time or so. Just came back from the dealership for the 6 month check. If I don't mention the issue to the clerk, they don't tell me it has to be fix. Will call Toyota and complain about misleading customers about fuel tank before buying. When this is a known issue.
I have a 21 Rav 4 hybrid. I run it down to the low fuel light and beyond. When there's 28 miles to go, the center screen goes blank, leaving you to rely on the gas gauge which is reading a little below E. i drove another 5 miles, then filled it until the pump stops. After starting, the gauge read beyond full. I've never been able to get more than 11.1 gallons in it. Miles to go gets as high as 580. Toyota says my car is not included in the recall. The fight continues.
I just bought a 2021 Rav4 Hybrid XSE and I can only put 11.1 gallons into my tank, have gotten only 400 miles per tank maximum, and that's when the DTE readout showed 6 miles to empty well after the low fuel indicator came on. Upon filling, gas physically shot out of the filler pipe before the pump clicked off. 31% REDUCTION IN FUEL CAPACITY. 34% REDUCTION IN TOTAL MILES PER TANK FROM REPORTED NUMBERS. HAVE SPOKEN TO TOYOTA CORPORATE AND AM WAITING AN IMINENT RESPONSE.
I have a 2021 rav4 prime when I first got the car it read 580 miles to empty. Second fill up I could only fill it to 10.5 and range went to 480 to empty. 3rd fill up I got 11 gallons. The dealer said I still had 2.2 gallons in my tank when I had 20 miles to empty. So I decided to run the car below E and I was still only able to add 11.6
If you went below DTE of 0, then I hear what you are saying. If you went to DTE of 0 and got about 12 gal + plus the 2 gal reserve, you are only about 1/2 gallon shy of tank capacity. The reserve is not counted toward DTE. That said, I have no idea why the initial tank from the dealer gets such high DTE.
I have a 2022 rav4 XLE when I first got the car it read 360 miles to empty. Second fill up I could only fill it to 9.5 and range went to 268 to empty. 3rd fill up I got 11 gallons and range went to 250 to empty, what can Ido
I recently got my gas tank replaced on my 2020 Rav4 Hybrid XSE. Prior to the fix, I was only getting 9-9.5 gallons on average when I would fill from empty to "full." It was such a pain since I couldn't fill up my gas tank all the way past the "F" line. Today, I was able to refill my tank, after getting it replaced, for the first time ever since the fix, and I was able to get 11.51 gallons of gas from almost empty to full with a range indicating 412 miles, also surpassing the "F" line. I don't think this is a complete fix, since I am not getting more than 500 on my range. I mean, it's better than before, when I would only average 340-360 miles in range after fill ups. Consider yourself lucky, that you get to see your range to reach above the 500 mark! I will keep observing my range and my gas tank capacity, with future fill ups. Hopefully, it gets better, as it is still winter where I live and the temperatures do make a difference in MPGs.
@@meowk5812 yes!! i know the struggle! wait until you get the Customer Support Program letter from Toyota regarding your Rav4 Hybrid fix! Do it right away, if you can, to get the problem fixed. I think they are using the same tank design as the new 2021 Rav4 Hybrids, since there isn't any defective 2021 gas tanks, as of now. The work takes almost the entire day, so bring it in your nearest Toyota Servicing Center early, and pick it up in the late afternoon to early evening.
Holy crap this is exactly what I am dealing with on my 2020 XLE hybrid!?! I finally found someone that knows my pain!!!??? I’ve been to the dealership and had the fuel tank replaced is what they said... but still can’t get over 412.... and I’ve filled up about 4 times after.
@@jmnd0324 I did end up going to Toyota a few days ago and my issue was the fuel sending unit which they replaced. I haven't fueled up yet but I hope this fixed the problem.
@@josephbesler344 I know what you mean! I still cant get a range over 500.. I recently just fueled up today, with my highest range with the car, of 450 miles with one fill up from empty to full. But then again, it's way better than only averaging 350 miles with the problem prior to getting it fixed.
I have Rav4 Prime the most mpg I got was 510 now I'm getting g 435 to 380. I went to service the technician told me that it all depends on the system and how I drive determines the fuel mileage, which is a bunch of BS. My friend has a Rav4 Prime and he said he getting over 550 to 600.
I am having the same issue as you and the service tech is blowing the same BS to me as well. I have made complaints to Toyota on the website. Please take the 5 minutes and voice your opinion, in the meantime if I have any answers i will share for sure.
@The Comeback Kid i think your tank has the issue. Keep us posted as yours stopped before 10 gallons. They should have a fix for it because other people are getting theirs fixed. The problem was with the pump stopping at 9.5 to 9.8 gallons or so. So you do have the tank issue.
The problem is he tested it with a quarter tank, he should of waited until his low fuel light comes on then there is a little over two gallons left in the tank when it comes on, at a quarter of tank he had at least four gallons if not more left so cutting off at ten gallons is right on the mark. plus his gas gauge read over the full mark mine wont even make it to the full mark when the pump shuts off. I estimate mine will only hold around twelve gallons
I just purchased a 2021 Highlander Hybrid and have the same issue. The tank is 17.1 gallons and will only take between 12 to 13.6 gallons when the fuel indicator light turns on. Wish more customers would report the issue to the NHTSA.GOV so they would investigate & force Toyota to issue a recall for the Highlander Hybrid.
My 2021 RAV 4 Hybrid XSE I can fill up-to 11.8 gallons, I gave it to service to check on this issue they said you are good you will be able to fill 14.5 gallons until tick, when I tried to fill again my tank I can fill the same i.e 11.8 Gal no change. Do you think it has 2.7 Gal reserve?
I'm surprised at the dealer, yes - they have a 2.4 gallon reserve because when you hit DTE of 0, they don't want you to be out of gas. If you can put 12 gal in and get 40 mpg, that is 480 DTE. If you could count the reserve at even 2 gal, it would increase it to 560. That said, I have no idea why the tank the dealer gives you has such high DTE the first time.
529 miles, 37 miles per gallon. 529m / 37mpg = 14.3 gallons. 1/5 gallons less than advertised. Someone else said your estimated range is based on previous mpg when you filled your tank. Maybe your last mpg was 36.5?
I have a 2021 Rav 4 hybrid and have never been able to get more than 11 gallons in and my miles remaining of 30 miles. My miles to empty have never gone above 513; I have 1500 miles on mine. Why is my rav4 not sensing the 3.5 gallons left in the tank fully.
That is the key I'd like to understand. Seems like the dealer in the first tank manipulated somehow so it calculated the reserve for that tank - never to happen again. It only counts what you put into it. If you get 11 gallons and it has even 3 gallons of reserve. The 11 gallons at 40 would be 440, but if you could add the 3, it would be 560 - more in line with the first tank.

@@TheComebackKid Actually, I just bought a Highlander hybrid in Europe and have exactly the same problem. My tank is full. Mpg is 33-34 and it shows a DTE of 435 miles...I am from Hungary and we did not win a single war for the past 500 years or so....Still, I do have this issue...:-)
Toyota has a fix for the fuel issue. you can check with Toyota service with your vin# to see if your rav4 is affected. Its not a serious issue, very minor inconvenience nothing to get to panicky or too upset over, vehicle works just fine and now they have a fix to the issue.
Robert, I agree there's a fix. My problem with my experience is that after paying almost $30k, my dealer/salesman lied directly to my face. Not a great way to build trust and a relationship. It seems you feel differently.
@@Tintmaster775 You didn't watch the video? He clearly knows thhere is a fix the problem is his dealer told him it wasn't a know issue and he has never heard of it especially not in the 2021 models he was fine. but its been a issue for a couple years so to say you never heard of it AT ALL even with a was a lie.
I'd expect problems like that and a delayed response like that from an American automaker, not Toyota. They better be careful or they'll be the next Mitsubishi or Nissan.
I have 2021 XLe hybrid and at 4000 miles I had 584 mikes, then it’s 550... I need to watch this issue. The heated steering wheel and seat coils broke under 3000 Miles. They “fixed” with factory parts. Now it heats up in a minute, then the whole wheel shuts off for five minutes and reboots- the seats STAY ON. I was told there’s a “thermostat” to oscillate heat but it should stay warm. Nope. Anyone else?

Hi victor, interesting feedback, thanks for sharing. If you end up having the fuel tank problem, follow up with me and let me know.
My distance until empty after refueling is always around the 320 mark. It sucks
I have 2022 Rav4 XLE the most mpg I got was 280 now I'm getting g 250only one month
That’s about what I’m
Getting. Started 585 when I got it, now it’s going down.
Adjust indication lower fuel level?
How about now what's the distance to empty
2020 Xse 440 miles at pump with 41 mpg
I just purchased a 2021 Highlander Hybrid and have the same issue. The tank is 17.1 gallons and will only take between 12 to 13.6 gallons when the fuel indicator light turns on. Wish more customers would report the issue to the NHTSA.GOV so they would investigate & force Toyota to issue a recall for the Highlander Hybrid.
same problem here! The tank is full and the DTE is 430 miles. The mpg is 33-34. This should give a c. 570 miles DTE...
You don’t have the fuel tank problem. Please, no more complaint.
529 miles, 37 miles per gallon. 529m / 37mpg = 14.3 gallons. 1/5 gallons less than advertised.
Someone else said your estimated range is based on previous mpg when you filled your tank. Maybe your last mpg was 36.5?
my Toyota Rav4 xle 2022 have same problem, every time fuel only about 250mile,what can I do ,370000 dollar buy the new car
You really expect a salesperson to be honest? That is not how the real world works, bro. NEVER trust a salesperson. No matter how "nice" they act, they are not your friend. They are not there to give you a "great deal". They are there to screw you over as much as they can get away with. Stay safe, do your research and trust no one especially when money is involved.
Why is it that the UK and Europe don't have this problem?
Hi MrPete, the UK and Europe don't have this problem because you lost the war.
@@TheComebackKid they have a fix as of last month. Go to your Toyota service department and they can help you out.
Why do you feel they lied to you?
@@Tintmaster775 You didn't watch the video? He clearly knows thhere is a fix the problem is his dealer told him it wasn't a know issue and he has never heard of it especially not in the 2021 models he was fine. but its been a issue for a couple years so to say you never heard of it AT ALL even with a was a lie.
I wouldn't be surprised if the fix was partially just to reprogram the span of the gauge reading s smaller size of the fuel tank
Hi TCK..... have you faced any issue when pressing the brake ...... some RAV4 hybrid make a clicking sound..
yes I face the same issue, I think it is not an issue, it is the way it operates
You can t trust a word from a sales man!
“No big deal”
