In the clip where you get the system overload message, you can see at the top of your session that your CPU is throttling. Open up activity monitor and look at what applications are taking up your CPU capacity and close any extra ones that you don't need open. Also, increase your buffer size. Won't be much of an issue unless you're planning on recording further in that session - then you'll get some latency the higher you set it. But if you're just mixing or programming midi, then it shouldn't be an issue.

I'm a photographer, who had about the same situation with a powerful but very old 2010 MacPro. I finally got frustrated with the limits of old softwars & got am M2 Studio. The storage was so expensive, that I am using a 4TB SSD as my boot drive and ignoring the internal 512GB altogether. I'm just changing over so I related to your change-over story. I can't tell you how it works yet or if it creates problems that I did not anticipate... but i will when I'm all in and working with 45 TB of photographs... You told your story very well... Bypassing the 512GB storage, is a great idea. I’m using 2TB which feels a bit small, I’ll eventually upgrade for more storage. 45TB of photos is huge lol, keep us updated on how you get on.

So interesting what you say and I feel your pain!! I've made the same kind of mistakes in the past. I have an iMac Pro at the moment and am looking to get a Mac Studio this year. I'm waiting for M3 and will also go for at least 1TB SSD (may be 2TB) and 64GB RAM. External storage is definitely the way to go. Have you considered external Thunderbolt RAID? You're so right about keeping your machine's SSD just for applications. The more space you have available on your internal SSD the less likely you'll run into problems as the space can be used for swap storage. Nice review. So pleased you like the Mac Studio despite your concerns. You could always sell it and get a higher spec one...!

Preciate your feedback! Sounds like you’ve got more patience than me lol - that’s a good thing. I probably will end up selling this and upgrading it, but for now it’s ok how I got things running. Preciate the knowledge on RAID, a few people have suggested that, seems like the way to go.
Is your Mac just for music production?

@@kcsoundsI'm a web and app developer but also do video (I have a small UA-cam channel). A Mac Studio is probably overkill for the web and app stuff but will be excellent for video editing. I tend to buy the best machine I can afford when I upgrade and then find it lasts me a long time. The iMac Pro has been in use for 6 years now, my machine prior to that (a trashcan Mac Pro) lasted 5, before that a Mac Pro cheesegrater lasted 7 years... Good luck with all you do! Cheers

Hi KC, what configuration you got now? Upgraded allready or it's still the same config?
This is my 3rd month(actually 3yrs plan/intention) for doing lots lots and a bit more research for the right Mac Studio config. I'm like a flipper-ball that continues rolling back to the same aim. I am focussing on a Mac Studio M2 64gb Ram 1tb ssd. Period Atm i'm hobby-producing on a i5 32gb ram Well okay, I'm done with windows with my Ableton Live, done with all the sh.t like background activity... Typical pc, right I'm sure many will agree. My mac Studio config for me it's pretty expensive and I'm searching for the right keyboard and mouse or trackball, as well i need and USB hub for my many midi devices and all. So i think 3 months more to get the last €1400 together Priority's, It's just the way it is as a single father. My car is even broke and sold for demolition lol, but no car yet, Mac Studio first, right
I don't know of them all so I need tips and doing researches as well ofcourse. So any comment or tips is welcome. Once I hope finally to stream my creations on Soundcloud.

Hey, apologies for the slow reply!
I’m still using the same setup, which seems to be working nicely. Every know and then I’ll move large files to an external hard drive, to free up space to fill again with more data lol.
Sounds like you’re going in the right direction of getting yours set up properly. My advice would be to get a decent enough hard drive space and Ram. From what I’m hearing there isn’t much difference in the chips now being used- but, make sure you do some research for yourself, and see what’s best for you. I use an Apple numeric keyboard, and a Mighty Mouse-nothing fancy! Tried the trackball and Apple pad-hated them 😩

Don't be so sad, M2 AND M3 are less performant than m1 when it comes to audio work! They kept making more powerful chips but switched quit a bunch of performance cores to efficiency cores. Ableton, logic can't really do much with the efficiency cores. so with the same set M1 vs M3 you can run more plugins on an m1 than m3. :)

    (1) Meh, there's always going to be harder/faster/stronger chips next year. Only upgrade when you MUST, not because of FOMO, and keep it going as long as you can, and you'll never be sad. (I still have 2012-13 Macs that just record video or audio locally, they still work, nothing wrong with them.)
    (2) There is no such thing as too much RAM, money, or ammunition. More important now that Apple won't let you upgrade after purchase so just budget for more at start and you'll be happy long-term.
    (3) Storage prices are stupid with Apple, so whenever you can get away with external SSD (or NAS) you should do it. (Cf. UNRAID.)
Glad to hear you're enjoying it! One of these days I will upgrade....but not just yet.

I’m not sure if it’s logic specific but I have been using the Mac Studio M2 for past few months, and frankly it has been poor at best. Certainly not what you expect for $2500+!! I’ve taken care of any plug in comparability issues. It is having buffer moments with a limited amount of tracks.
Could be a dodgy unit, could be logic I haven’t explored much further but yeah certainly not what you expect. Mind you with apple, logic, Macs I general (20 yr Mac fan) it’s beginning to be the norm.
I shall venture on and try to figure this out though. But for that kinda money really shouldn’t have to.

Nah mate I've got the Mac studio and had the same issues for over a year now. Logic can't hang or this machines busted (and I got the ultra 64 gig 2tb). Bounces video like nothing else but logic.. nah.
Using soothe 2, Pro L2 or izotopes just lags this thing up so that midi is unusable. literally need to put it in "low latency mode" whenever I add these which I never had to do until I hit like 200+ Chanels on my ol Mac Pro (garbage can edition).

yeah I made that mistake too. Buying Apple has been one of my worst mistakes! It costs 3 times more than a PC build with Windows, and it breaks faster. And when that happens have to give them to fix for a full week or more and you lose and entire week of work. And you have to pay a lot for that, while with Windows PC build you just change that little broken piece, costs waaay less and you lose only 1 day. And as you said if you want to add RAM or something you are forced to buy another entire Mac at full price (while on PC build you just buy RAM with few money and simply add it). At this point you should consider doing an Hackintosh or change DAW. You're a really good person, I hate when those things happens to people like you.

    • @kcsounds

Sucks that Apple do us like this, but I’m so used to using their products, especially Logic, that I’m locked into their ecosystem lol. I started off using PC, using Reason, FL and Cubase. But, studies at college and Uni was all Mac and Logic, so I was kinda forced into it. To be honest, I couldn’t get on with Pro Tools, Cubase and FL, so Logic became my go-to. Hopefully, Apple will sort themselves out and make it easier for us to upgrade our hardware… but, I doubt that very much.

yeah, I understand. But thinking that with only 70$ you could double instantly your RAM on PC but you can't because of Apple makes me crazy. They do only what makes them more money. 2003? And how much RAM does it have, 256 Megabytes? With Apple if you want to change just 1 thing you are forced to buy an entire new computer. Instead in a Windows PC build you just buy only that piece and change it instantly. So that means an Apple computer will be older much sooner than a normal PC. Apple business model is that you have to buy a new Mac and a new iPhone every 5 years or you are not their client anymore. Instead PC builds with Windows can last 10 years or more and still be competitive because you can change every single piece when you want. (then if you consider that Apple products costs 2 times more and breaks the same as others I would leave that company as soon as possible) @@siro5838

You just need to expand storage, im using the hagibis USB C Hub it can handle 2 internal drives, up to 2 TB each, im using also a powered usb hub for total of 14 usb ports, with external drives 8 TB plus portable disks. Move all plugins outside the main drive (the internal one) and the projects also. there are immense noticeable benefits on Daws with the latest m2 or m3, nothing really exponencial or impressive, I think the M1 studio is still the best performance for the money at least on DAWS. I will keep the computer as long as i can. Cheers.

I agree, it’s still a very powerful unit. Sounds like you’ve got a nice setup for your workflow. I’ll find a suitable workaround for the lack of Main HD storage. Cheers for your insight, and watching the video

Bro you should sell it and get the m3 Mac Studio when it launches. Most likely around June. I have a 2015 iMac and I intend to replace it when the m3 Mac Studio launches.

M3 chip isn't doing better vs de M2 and even the M1 chip in your music production. Check you tube. Many reviews to find that M3 isn't that good.
