In case you’re not aware, if you click the little chain link in the top right of the Kontakt instance, you can just scroll through the tracks with the arrow key and it’ll show whatever instance is associated with it. Wish I’d learned that one much earlier than I did!
Barry your channel has quickly become my favourite go to….thanks for all the quality info you share 🙏
How does the memory pressure look like when playing all these tracks? That would show if 16 GB RAM would be enough
Hi. I love your channel. Great stuff i can found out here.
I wanted to ask would you recomend mac studio m2 max or m2 ultra and how much ram?
I am more concerned about having the lowest latency when u record my midi keyboard to play keyscape. What is the lowest latency time i can get with 32 samples buffer ?
BTW - I would note that in real world use, users would likely achieve twice as many instrument tracks. (sometimes even more) That is because they wouldn't usually all play simultaneously. You'd also be unlikely to use 87 of the same instruments. Some would require more or less CPU overhead.
Thanks for sharing.
I think doing this test using 48k would be great since much of the pro world works in 48k, especially film and TV.
Thanks! Apparently the M1 chip is the best for audio as the later ones offer more GPU cores that are not used for audio.
Nice test!! Thanks!! Its impressive what these new macs are capable of...
Do I need something this powerful for just basic vocals? Pitch correction, compression, eq, reverb plug ins (all low latency ones)
can you share you benchmark project? or please make a comparison to mac studio max. thank you
Hi Barry, thanks for another useful coverage,
here's a topic I think would be very interesting to cover, for you and all of us viewers:
it appears various DAWs aren't able to utilize Efficiency cores (applies to Apple silicon Macs, but also PCs with latest Intel 12/13th gen processors),
so far it seems Apple's own Logic can't for example, on the other hand for ex. Reaper DAW can - so there are massive differences especially comparing 10-core M2 Pro (6+4) vs 10-core M1 Max (8+2)
cheers
Thanks… Any chance of a similar test but using sample streaming instruments rather than virtual synths. A lot of us just use sampled VIs.
Very informative Video as always Sir. I am a pro Mixing Engineer working in then Films and Television side. And I mix some indie songs from time to time. I rarely use VSTs as I don't produce Music. I am upgrading to a Mac Mini M2 pro but will 16gigs of RAM be sufficient for my workflow. I have been debating upgrading to 32gigs for a while now.
I am strictly into Mixing and Sound Designing and no Music Production and definetly no Video Editing stuff. So what would you suggest. Honestly 44 instances of Massive is quite impressive in itself but still.
If it’s primarily audio, then 16 is fine if doing heavy VI then 32.
You probably found an answer by now.
In case, there is a Canadian musician ,James Chan who tested similarly for mixing and mastering. You can watch his video from his channel if interested. Regards.

This is great can we have the same sort of tests in cubase or studio one please???
Do you have any examples of this machine as a guitar player would use it? I want to add some drum loops, record a bunch of guitars, bass, etc. then apply plugins to compress, EQ, or reverb. I have a feeling your normal workflow is similar.
Wait for the M4 that will be released 4th qtr or 1st qtr next year. Regardless the machine above is more than power enough to do what you want.
@@BarryJohnsThat is always the problem. I need something now and the next big thing is always coming. Once I get past the insane pricing on Mac I might pull the trigger. My little “off lease” micro PC from 2015 works OK for capturing ideas and a simple gtr/voc but it cries when plugins come into play. Forget VI altogether. QuietPC has some fan less mini-itx PCs that are tempting but Intel seems like junk now.
Mac’s are no more expensive than pc’s, never have been. If you compare similar specs that are comparably priced, it’s that Apple doesn’t make entry level budget machines what are not good for DAW work. If you do go with PC, spec and build it yourself.
Good video Barry, as a big virtual instrument user I would use more resource hungry instruments like a full Komplete 13 session using Kontakt orchestral , acoustic piano instruments as they use more cpu than Massive. Spectrasonics Omnisphere, Keyscape, Pianoteq etc would all push the cpu more but we get the idea. Realistically unless your doing a huge orchestral score, the M1/M2 systems with 16 to 32 ram would be enough for actual use
Question, no fan kicking in in the process?
I have four Apple Silicon-based Macs, and not once have I ever heard a fan come on.
Test out with mix and mastering tools! The RX repair plugin from Izotope I used, mine is M1 Mini and had system overload, no CPU high!
Great video,Q. What,s the difference between a Dock and a Hub??
6:43 Sounds like Mission Impossible Fallout, starring Perry the Platypus.
So which am I?
Did you stop at 87 because that's all you had room for or because that's all it could handle?
Neither, I personally think it’s pointless to keep going. I can’t imagine anybody having 87 virtual instrument in one session
Can you try? mixbus 32c v 9.
What are the voltage and current tolerances for the logic board of the Mac Mini M2 Pro?
Great video Barry you should try dial up AOL lol😂😂. Lol good stuff
Belive or or not, there was a time I did😁
@@BarryJohns “You’ve Got Mail “. Goodbye. Lol. If the young generation only knew our struggles
I wonder if the m2 pro tested is limited by storage speed. As Apple's partners have been improving NAND density.
For M1 MacBook Air/MacBook Pro 13/Mac Mini, its requires 1 NAND chip to form 256G of storage (half speed), 2 NAND chips to form 512G of storage or more. For M2 MacBook Air/MacBook Pro 13/Mac Mini, its requires 1 NAND chip to form 256G or 512g of storage (half speed), 2 NAND chips to form 1T of storage or more.
As a result, 512g M2 Pro Mac Mini would have only half the storage speed of M1 Pro MacBook 14, and that's even slower than mainstream PC on the market (for example, a $800 laptop).
@DDD-ix1hz Thats not good and is a cause for concern- is there a solution to the problem you bring to light that you would suggest ?
Great demo! Any knowledge on how Superior Drummer 3 works with M2Pro??
I bought Mac Mini M2 Pro based model + Samsung T7
It’s still called Logic Pro. They did ditch the X though!
I always think you're Frasier in your thumbnails. not a bad thing.
🤣🤣🤣 wtf
I've seen it a few times too!
I'm hoping for a recreation of these tests in Nuendo, Barry.
Thanks for all that you do.
Reaper is currently the only DAW that is capable of using all the CPU cores in these Apple silicon machines. You heard that right... Reaper is better optimized than Apple's own software.
But understand, in many cases , its not about utilising the efficiency cores, but how you personally are efficient with your daw workflow..
Theres always the Pro's and Cons.
Reaper wins in many cases, and some not.
@@Rhythmatticayou can’t tell these fanboys shit.. let them have their fun, they aren’t doing real mixing jobs anyway
Actually Cubase also uses the efficiency cores as well.
Cubase can as well. Thank you very much.
Hi Barry.
Thanks for the interesting video.
I'd be interested in people's opinions on the results you got in comparison with Christian Henderson's old test with his 6 core 2013 Mac Pro.
I think he had 128gb of ram.
I'm not sure about the difference in CPU resources between sample based instruments and virtual instruments.
Anyway, keep up the great work!

every other word is uh
Thank you Uh
Can anyone advise if you can run multiple vm's on one M2 Mac studio each with a dedicated line? Would it be possible to run 20 VM's at the same time? Thanks.
Can you try? mixbus 32c v 9.
