I've seen steve live about 9 or 10 times over the last 10 years, and it's always amazing. It's the closest you will get to seeing genesis live in the 70's.
We are very fortunate that Steve is still touring and keeping this music alive in a live performance format, saw him recently for the fifth time in March and was happy to see many young people in the audience. Hopefully they will continue to listen to this music well into the future.
Guys, you are right, Firth Of Fifth is, arguably, the best Gabriel-era Genesis song as it has everything they were all about at that time. Hackett is the only one out there flying the Gabriel-era Genesis flag so be sure to catch him live. I've seen him a few times and the shows were mesmerizing and you really get to see what a master Hackett is. Nice pick guys!
This is THE best guitar solo ever. Ive seen The Musical Box many times, and this masterpiece is always the best part of the show. Ive seen Steve Hackett live too, and it was so good. I really like that he plays the solo close to the original. How can you play better than perfection anyway!!
Hearing this and Shadow of the Hierophant live among other songs was an emotional experience. Hearing the Taurus Pedals literally shaking the Theater was an experience I'll never forget
He is one of the best! I also went to see The Foxtrot album performance and it was amazing! I also saw him when he was touring selling England by the pound.
I watched Steve and the band perform "Selling England by the Pound" in its entirety ... the hall was packed with people who ... like me ... had listened to the album so many times over the years that we knew it intimately. You could tell that, as well as a lot of love in the room .. we were all listening intently and waiting for every little nuance to be honored, every cymbal hit, every arpeggio on the bass, every synth solo ... and as the final note sounded the whole place erupted, what a night.
Firth of Fifth is such an impressive Genesis song, allowing each musician the space to showcase instrumental mastery, while delivering such an atmospheric experience, that the listener is easily taken out of their own space to visit the other-worldly imagery that is conjured by the mood and the lyric. So absorbing is the whole, that for decades, I never really ventured to examine the narrative within the words too deeply. Being a native Scot, I was not distracted by the title, in fact the title is the key to the narrative. Its not a puzzle, its a pun. The lyric invites us to join us in a journey through the mountains, hills and valleys of Scotland as we observe the majesty of nature’s wonder. The verdant land, nurtured as it is by the rains that also feed the river as it progresses through the landscape, is the object of much of the lyric. However the metaphor the river is the ultimate focus in there piece. A firth, in old Scots, is a passage of water or mouth of a river. You can check to Firth of Lorne, or Firth of Tay, Firth of Forth (Fifth is the smart imagining inspired by this one). The key to the lyric is to accept how simple the imagery is, it’s not complex, but it’s pretty deep (like a Firth). The journey of the river is the journey of life, racing at it does to be consumed by the sea, accepting its end as Neptune consumes its soul. Firth of Fifth is an ode to the pastoral beauty and wonder of nature, and still stands as a reminder that we, like the river are transient, inevitably moving along our own course, until we surrender at its end. Expiry should not be sad, as we too journey through beauty and majesty along the way, but can we bring ourselves to take real joy in its witness, or are we too distracted to be mindful? As a bonus, Firth of Fifth is itself an undinal song. Neat.
I was at the concert with my younger brother, who sadly passed from Cancer earlier this year. I highly recommend you listen to Suppers Ready from the same show. Possibly the best version of suppers ready ever recorded. Steve extends the closing section by several minutes, it is simply amazing. Shadow of the Hierophant was also incredible, the whole building shook with the bass pedals in the closing moments, sadly you just don’t get the same impact from the recording, you just had to be there.
Steve Hackett is my favourite guitarist because of his versatility . Many guitarists Dave Gilmore and others struggle when playing acoustic guitar Hackett plays acoustic guitar like a classical musician.
Just rewatched this - so awesome. Steve tours non stop. See this man before it's too late. Also just celebrated my wife's Birthday on October 6th. Belated Happy Birthday Alexia! Tom from Toronto
This entire concert with the orchestra is one of the best shows I've seen (I have the Blu-Ray) You need to watch them perform "Supper's Ready" from this same show.. Stunning..
Steve keeps the real spirit of Genesis alive. He always pays great tribute to his time with the band and his deep love of the music. His live shows are amazing, such a brilliant musician and gives it his all. If only Genesis had taken on more of his ideas and included more of his input in the records who knows what might have been. Steve always does collaborations with orchestras and choirs. You should also check out his collaboration with Todmobile live in Iceland, with amazing orchestra doing Supper's Ready it's just off the charts.
After seeing Steve with Genesis in 1977, I'm so excited to go watch him in Brussels next July 2nd for his tour "Genesis Greats, Lamb Highlights & Solo"
This has always been my absolute favourite genesis songs. I was 13 years old when i heard the album for the first time. At my library.. in 1973... A great video.. keep'em coming !
I'm so glad you're giving Steve's band a try. I've seen him play a handful of times, and was lucky enough to meet him just before the pandemic hit. His meet and greet price used to be something like a $35 up charge to a standard ticket. They'd give you a signed poster and he'd sign something you brought too (plus a picture and brief chat). Very warm and friendly, and the idea that he was willing to listen to a line of people ask him about a reunion for $35 shows how grounded he is.
I've seen SH about five times at the Royal Concert Hall Nottingham over the years and every concert was amazing and the closest you will ever get to the Genesis of old. You should definitely go if you get the chance and he is still touring regularly.
No, Firth of Fifth is MY favorite!😊 I taught myself to play it on the piano 50 years ago and every time I saw a keyboard just had to perform it because every single time I did it transported me to a special spiritual place. I had the privilege of meeting Tony Banks around that time and thanked him personally for his masterpiece. Thanks for sharing this special performance---I so very rarely enjoy orchestral renditions of rock (unless its's already an integral part of the work as with Alan Parsons, for example) as it invariably ends up so very cheesy. Far from it in this case. The arrangement herw was exceptional, and I, too enjoyed the reed substtution for the flute. I saw Steve Hackett live way back when on the Voyage of the Acolyte and Spectral Morning tours, and he is a true artiste.
Seen Steve live lots of times since 2009, in Paris each time. Met him personaly backstage after a show at Olympia and talked to him around 10 mn , with Amanda Lehmann too. Nice and humble guy. You should do Supper's ready of course. Then you should try Shadow of the Hierophant live too because it's a highlight of his solo stuff, from his first solo album, Voyage of the Acolyte, which he did in 1975, with Sally Oldfield, his brother John and Phil and Mike (who co-wrote this song which was proposed for Foxtrot). Highly recommended.
The "Supper's Ready" version they did is amazing. Better than the original, if it can be believed. Steve includes an awe-inspiring guitar solo at the end that was never in the studio track (probably because the rest of the band wouldn't allow it, lol).
Have seen Genesis six times, from early to new.Every performance, regardless of time period ,were spectacular.Always top notch musicians, perhaps the greatest band ever!!!!
I have my ticket booked to see Steve and his band in Manchester in October. I can't wait as I haven't been able to see him live before doing Genesis Revisited. I saw Genesis live with Peter four times between '72 and '75 but never when Phil sang as I had moved to SA. This song (did I just call this a song?) needs to be celebrated and revered. The original is wonderful, Genesis played it beautifully live, and performances like this one honours a remarkable piece of music.
Beautiful reaction to my favorite band (Genesis) and my favorite guitar player. Steve is the keeper of the flame of the original Genesis magic. See him live, he is amazing.
You must definitely go and see Steve Hackett play live if you get the chance. I saw him in Bristol, around nine or ten years ago, on the "Genesis Revisited II" tour, and more recently in Oxford. The Bristol show in particular was one of the best concerts I have ever attended.
Thank you for getting into Steve Hackett. He's been in my top two for many years now. Together with his great band, they have been putting on amazing shows for quite a while. There's maybe five or six live discs available, and they're all excellent. Steve also continues to put out great solo albums at the rate of about one every two years, and they are also excellent. The final point is, this band is always on tour. Seen them many times. Seek out: The Stepps, Tigermoth, & Clocks -The angel of Mons. Jewels.
Hi Guys , this is brilliant ! Absolutely love this track whether it's by Genesis or Steve Hackett live, and this has the amazing Nad Sylvan on vocals who I've told you about previously. He is so versatile he can sound like Peter Gabriel & Phil Collins. Really looking forward to playing this and I haven't seen you do "Squonk" so I really can't wait to see that as well. I have both songs on Hackett Live dvd which is the stunning "Seconds Out" Revisited. Ok time to play video. Byee Jim X
Hi there...Steve Hackett is great. Going to see Jon Anderson tonight here in NJ. Really looking forward to it. Will have to give you my general review of it (but I won't give away the details) as I know you're going soon there in Colorado.
@NicknLex It was a really great show. You're gonna LOVE it. The voice of Yes makes all the difference. To me, Jon still sounds as great as ever. I believe this was only the second show on the tour so far. As they play more, the band will gel more. So by the time they get to you they'll be more on point (but Jon was definitely already there). All in all, one of the better shows I've seen in past three years. As you would expect, 85% of the songs played were the big Yes hits. They really nailed "Close To The Edge". Show was 2 hours and 45 mins with a 20 minute intermission.
Wow how wonderful!!! So glad to hear you enjoyed yourself! Totally agree about Yes’ voice. That’s why I didn’t enjoy the Yes show and why I’m so excited for this to redeem my last experience 😆 Thank you for all the useful info!! CAN’T WAIT!!!!
Saw Steve last autumn and have tickets for the Lamb tour. I've lost count of how many times I've seen this line up but they just just keep getting better. Their new drummer is a real powerhouse. The Festival Hall is a great venue and you can watch a Waterloo sunset on your way in.
Heartfelt reaction to one of my fav Genesis songs. You can’t help feel the emotion this piece invokes. Have to add that Lex’s concert tee brings back memories from 1977. I was driving by Anaheim Stadium, heading south on the 57 freeway at dusk, just before the show started. Not sure if it was the Friday, or Saturday show. There was a very noticeable column of smoke rising from the entire stadium. I could see the pig balloon. Pink Floyd was known for their stunning live shows back then. Looks like someone modified it to the “flash dance” style with some handy scissor work. Oh, and of course you totally rock it.
I was at this at Festival Hall and the volume was incredible literally vibrating your seat. This was October 2018 , the band and orchestra were in fantastic form. Shadow Of The Heirophant was a triumph.Great choice you two so lovely to see you enjoy brilliant music.
I saw Genesis back in the 80's, The Genesis album tour 83, incredible concert, some of my favorite music, Home by the sea, you're taking it all too hard, great songs
This is so gratifying. I lucked into a new copy of this best of albums, and this best of songs, when it was new, and the solo from Firth became my calling card, in the form of whistling, in stairwells, parking decks, or any place with good acoustics. Even now I still do it. That or "Sukiyaki", also great fun. Try it! But to see people a half century later still being blown away by it...gratifying indeed. I knew I had good tastes! :)
Great performance of a great song! I've never seen this version and I really enjoyed it. This is also one of my favorite Genesis songs; however, I came to know and love it later in life. When Peter Gabriel was the lead singer, he freaked me out with his stage antics and makeup, me being only 14 at the time, but when I heard their music it sounded to me like I was sitting down for tea and crumpets with the Queen, it was so English manor-house sounding, and I've never been much of a royalist. I did like a couple of early Genesis songs, but it took a long time for me to really like their sound. Now, I do like ALL eras of Genesis, and I really love Gabriel's solo career.
2:51 No, dear Nick, Tony composed the piano solo when he was 17 yo at Charterhouse school (at that time he also composed Willow farm - maybe some Beatles listening was in his mind - of Supper's ready and A trick of the tail - the song). This orchestra performance is brilliant, but I hope it's a training to Seconds Out reaction! I adore you! 😍😍😍
Nice version of a great song. A bit slower, but quite dramatic. Thanks for doing this version. Saw Steve Hackett about 8 months ago do Foxtrot (and a few encores), including this song. Just so good.
Luvvit! I just came back from a night out with my brother visiting from the states and came across this video, which I have seen before, but sharing the experience on headphones with you guys was amazing. Steve Hackett does this song great justice and really does offer an amazing live performance every time. So good to share this reaction with you. 😎😎👍👍❤❤
Uno de mis héroes de la guitarra ! Genio total rock total busquen GTR gran grupo con los 2 Steve !! Howe y Hackett cuando el corazón domina a la mente !! Temazo ! Rock progresivo en su máxima expresión
Nik I sasy this with all respect, You are very fortunate, Lexi is wonderful. I mean youre pretty wonderful too, but she is rare. And yes, The orch makes it so big and full. Amazing!
Oh, yes. I did see Steve in Austin back in April, Was awesome. You could do some stuff from Voyage of the Acolyte. Lots of good stuff on there. Or Spectral Mornings. Also, have you heard Jon (Andersen-- Yes) and Vangelis? Friends of Mr Cairo is one of my old favorites from my time))
According to Banks, he initially wrote all of it for piano, but during a rehearsal they tried going 'full King Crimson' on it, with Hackett playing the 'flute' part at its peak, and it was a sound they couldn't ignore.
Nick, Lex that's beautiful so now your doing live.... I know you've done Marillion Easter Please react to ir live at the Royal Albert Hall anything from that show is amazing. 🙏❤️
Seen Musical Box as well several times. They were great. So close to the originals. Steve Hackett live is brilliant - mixing old Genesis stuff with his own compositions. Thanks for the reaction.
Yes! Another fab reaction! Soprano sax (a difficult instrument to play, apparently) replaced PG's flute. I too loved the extra power of the orchestra (AMAZINGLY well orchestrated, it supplemented but didn't dominate, and was wonderfully in-character) - also the fractionally slower tempo, allowing the majestic harmonies and progressions to shine even more, and actually giving more bounce and impetus to some sections (actually this is a little-known 'secret weapon' - sometimes try playing a song a bit slower, not faster). Thanks both! And please, Supper's Ready by Steve, band and orchestra!
Hard not to be emotional listening to Firth of Fifth. Steve is just awesome.
Tears every single time I hear Firth of Fifth!
So is Nad
With an orchestra it is even more majestic! Brilliant.
what an amazing song - Steve Hackett at his best......speechless although I listened to this song hundred of times......
I've seen steve live about 9 or 10 times over the last 10 years, and it's always amazing. It's the closest you will get to seeing genesis live in the 70's.
For a piece of music that's 50 years old, it's still pretty awesome! Steve would have been around 70 yrs old at the time of this concert!
We are very fortunate that Steve is still touring and keeping this music alive in a live performance format, saw him recently for the fifth time in March and was happy to see many young people in the audience. Hopefully they will continue to listen to this music well into the future.

I saw Steve Hackett live in March this year. They closed with Supper’s Ready and encored with Firth.. one of the greatest live experiences of my life.
Also his pedal board is enormous 😄.
After seeing Hackett perform on the Foxtrot 50th anniversary tour , I have to say he is , for me the number 1 guitarist of all time. 🙏🙏😍😍
Along with Steve Howe from Yes.
Nothing wrong with a bit of shredding but SH's control and subtlety shows his class as a guitarist.
I agree and I went and saw too
Thrilling music. My favourite band and my favourite song from them.
Thanks Maestro Hackett for keeping the magic of prog eternal!
Steve and his band are epic!! He is keeping the Genesis flame burning while the others have retired.
He kept the flame burning ever since he left, and the others gave up the muse with ATTWT.
This song still gives me goosebumps. Steve and the band are fantastic.
That sounds amazing. Thank you for sharing with us!!
One of the most beautiful live performances I have ever heard/seen. The song doesn't hurt that fact! Great to see a reaction to this version...
The concert with John Wetton on the vocals is really really good. It has Ian McDonald on there from King Crimson too.
In the Court of the Crimson King is fabulous
Yes absolutely 👍
This works so well with the orchestra all i can say is wow wow wow wow wow sheer genius
Wonderful! Wonderful!! Wonderful!!!
I was at this very show.... It was, of course, fantastic! XX
The intro is out of this world! Magnificent sound coming from true professionals …great song

Thank you Tom!!
High nick n lex i would recommend spectral mornings from this truly genius musician
This entire concert with the orchestra is one of the best shows I've seen (I have the Blu-Ray) You need to watch them perform "Supper's Ready" from this same show.. Stunning..
Simply the greatest prog rock song of all times, no disputing it. You guys are close to 100K followers, so happy for you both!
Steve keeps the real spirit of Genesis alive. He always pays great tribute to his time with the band and his deep love of the music. Absolutely blown away! As you know this song is my favorite too!! This was a treat. That solo! One of my favorite of all time! Thank Nick and Alexia!!
This and "Selling England..." really are masterpieeces!
This has always been my absolute favourite genesis songs.
I was 13 years old when i heard the album for the first time.

Stunning performance of a masterpiece. Just brilliant. Firth of Fifth is by far my favorite Genesis song. Thanks for sharing.
Every day nick classic steve hackett
Watch the conductor reaction towards the end of the song in Suppers Ready. He was enjoying it so much, I thought he was going to take off.
Saw him on March 1st. He performed his new album as well as Foxtrot in its entirety. Incredible show
Fantastic introduction and overall song. Those early years of prog. Rock was magical from Genesis, ELP, Tull, YES, and even a bit of Zeppelin!
Such a great version with incredible vocals!
Timeless genius...Awe inspiring!
I saw Steve Hackett in Brighton, England during this tour. At the end of the solo, a fella stood up and shouted, “Steve, you nailed it mate” 😅
I've seen SH about five times at the Royal Concert Hall Nottingham over the years and every concert was amazing and the closest you will ever get to the Genesis of old.
You should definitely go if you get the chance and he is still touring regularly.

Alexa, watching you react with such pleasure, joy, and emotion is priceless!
Thank you for watching and for your support!! 💗 It’s a joy to share it with you!!
Have seen Genesis six times, from early to new.Every performance, regardless of time period ,were spectacular.Always top notch musicians, perhaps the greatest band ever!!!!
The bassist is from THE FLOWER KINGS, and NAD has several amazing albums to his own credit. One of them 'THE BRIDE SAID NO' is fantastic.
Aah.. Jonas Reingold. A great bass player..
Jonas also has his own part time band called Karmakanic. They’ve released some really good albums.
This performance....and Xanadu....from live 81..from Rush...E.S.L....2of the best live tracks...Ever...❤❤❤❤

So happy to see you enjoy this
I’ve seen every solo tour since he left genesis
He is the best ❤️🎶

Hard core Genesis fan since 1973. Now 66 and the music still is inspirational. (At least from Duke and its predecessors.)
Espectacular!!!
You must see this man ! Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
Tom from Toronto
Nice version of a great song. A bit slower, but quite dramatic. Thanks for doing this version. Saw Steve Hackett about 8 months ago do Foxtrot (and a few encores), including this song. Just so good.
Luvvit! I just came back from a night out with my brother visiting from the states and came across this video, which I have seen before, but sharing the experience on headphones with you guys was amazing. Steve Hackett does this song great justice and really does offer an amazing live performance every time. So good to share this reaction with you. 😎😎👍👍❤❤
Aww so glad you enjoyed sharing this with us!! 💗
Hermosa ejecución, un tema muy bonito y profundo. Saludos desde Temperley, Argentina.
Those bass pedals were incredible

Oh, yes. I did see Steve in Austin back in April, Was awesome. You could do some stuff from Voyage of the Acolyte. Lots of good stuff on there. Or Spectral Mornings. Also, have you heard Jon (Andersen-- Yes) and Vangelis? Friends of Mr Cairo is one of my old favorites from my time))
Huge! Fabulous group! 😀👏👏👏
Grandioso, genial! Gracias por la buena música de Génesis y el gran Steve Hackett. Saludos!
According to Banks, he initially wrote all of it for piano, but during a rehearsal they tried going 'full King Crimson' on it, with Hackett playing the 'flute' part at its peak, and it was a sound they couldn't ignore.
Gabriel plays the flute
Nick, Lex that's beautiful so now your doing live....
I know you've done Marillion Easter
Please react to ir live at the Royal Albert Hall anything from that show is amazing. 🙏❤️
Rob Townsend played the solo on a soprano saxophone!!
Seen Musical Box as well several times. They were great. So close to the originals. Steve Hackett live is brilliant - mixing old Genesis stuff with his own compositions. Thanks for the reaction.
Beside of that's a masterpiece , Nad Sylvan on vocals is unbelievable, perfect Gabriel cover !
You should checkout Supper’s Ready from the same concert with Steve’s brilliant extended solo at the end. Total mugic
Very cool!
You should watch Supper's Ready from this concert it's incredible finishes with a great guitar solo

Do you know - the old great man in piano is Steve's brother :))
Definitely do Steve live with BLOOD ON THE ROOFTOPS. 👍
I think you would like Steve Hackett playing Suppers Ready with the Todmobile Icelandic symphony in Iceland. Its Epic!!!!!
goosebumps - best guitar solo ever... sorry David Gilmour!
greetings from Krefeld/GER
Its just a pity more people don't see your video!
Agreed!!
That was soprano saxophone that was played instead of flute. Played by Rob Townsend.
Please react to Steve Hackett’s live performance of “Blood on the Rooftops”.
