My daughter is recently obsessed with anything and everything Japanese and so naturally she wanted a bento box style lunch for school, so what do I do, I jump on youtube and learn how to make her a bento box lunch! I keep coming back around to your channel to learn delicious foods, so thank you very much for helping out this mama!

I went to Japan thrice from 2004 to 2007. Then I changed my job and could never go back again. I regret my decision every day of my life because visiting Japan is a privilege whether it's the food, the politeness, the work culture, the highest level of civility not to mention the cleanliness, discipline etc etc.. basically perfection in everything. To see that and to experience it first hand is a gift. I love Japan

This is perfect. My toddler loves eating rice, but sometimes she gets frustrated trying to eat it out of a bowl, she doesn't like getting rice stuck to herself, and the fact that she's hungry just makes her even angrier, haha. I made some child sized onigiri for her and it's much easier for her to eat!

Thank you for your explanation on this traditional Japanese snack. As I watch a second time I am reminded of the times that my mom and I would make these together, the Japanese plum one is my favorite. We had so much fun. I would get home from elementary school and of course change into my play clothes and eat one or two for a snack.

Personally I have one tuna-based filling which I do prefer over the normal tuna+mayonnaise. Try it! What you need is:
    canned tunna
    mayonnaise
    capers
    soy sauce
    sake
    a pinch of parmesan.
Blend all the ingredients together, add mayonnaise and soy sauce if you want the whole thing to be a bit softer. Personally I really appreciate to put a nice amount of capers, and don't exaggerate with sake, just some drops!

I've been taking onigiri to work, because my lunch is only 30 mins. So far I have only put scrambled eggs in it(seasoned with salt and onion powder), I really want to branch out but It's so hard to find Ume or other traditional Japanese fillings in USA. At least in Arizona. I will try tuna and mayo. I wish I could try the more interesting fillings!

Living 808, and being raised in "mixed" company, have iund it easier to start w/3-4 ozs.of rice, shape into small, flat circle(or triangle...your choice) then add whatever filling you want-ume, tuna, salmon, sardine, etc., etc. Then cover creation w/additional rice. For me, it's EASY!--IMHO

in Indonesia we have something like Onigiri but without Nori :D there's two version of it 1. we call it "Lontong isi" made of compressed rice cake in the form of a cylinder wrapped inside a banana leaf you can filled with spicy oncom, spicy rice noodle of some spicy veggie and even meat. and we dip it into Sweet & spicy peanut butter sauce. for the 2nd. we call it "Lemper" made of glutinous rice filled with chicken, fish or abon (meat floss) in the form of a small cylinder wrapped inside a banana leaf :D

Jaime de devangel Thank you so much for teaching me about those foods. We have something similar to that too called Chimaki. It's glutinous rice with meat and vegetables inside and wrapped in a leaf. Sounds very similar yeah? :)

is the rice with or without salt? greetings from Cologne, Germany

The rice is plain. You put the salt onto your hands. This way it doesn't get too salty.

I'm making onigiri for the kids I watch (for my job) tomorrow! Can I just say I wish I had your hands! They're so much prettier than mine! I'm actually making a filling my friend Yuko-chan taught me to make--beef cooked with teriyaki! We used to eat it while we studied all the time! :D

+KeelyCanVlog aww thank you! Now I'm sure your hands are prettier than mine! lol. You should do an onigiri video. That would be fun to watch!

Hahah! You definitely shouldn't have watched how I made onigiri today! They ended up being like...3 inches thick! Lolol! And I definitely got rice everywhere! It was like a Rice Volcano exploded. But at least they tasted good! haha!
But maybe I'll film one...when I can make them without throwing rice everywhere. haha!
