How to Change a Brake Light on a 2005 Nissan Altima

  • This is a real time video on changing a brake light in a 2005 Nissan Altima. I've pointed out some helpful information:
-how to release & easily replace the weather stripping/carpet cover
-how to remove the cargo net connector
-a standard socket won't reach over the bolt, I had to use an adjustable wrench but just to loosen the nut/washer; I then used my hand to remove them
-location of plastic posts which stabilize the light casing
-identify which bulb is being replaced for a brake light
-how to use simple leverage to remove the connector for the electrical
-where to use dielectric grease on the new bulb
PLEASE NOTE: You really shouldn't touch the bulb with your bare hand. You can use rubber or laytex gloves or a cloth to prevent the oils from your skin touching the bulb. Since these bulbs burn at high temps, the oil will reduce their life.
PANEL CLIPS: Most of the clips do have a center popout that will do 2 things:
    - 1) make it easier to remove. Just put a flathead screwdriver under the center raised circle and pry it up slightly. The locking stem will then be released (aka flattened) so the clip can be removed easily
    - 2) you won't have to go buy a new one to replace the one you broke cuz you watched this video and saw me just yank it out ;)
If you do break your panel clips, you can buy replacement ones at the hardware store or an autoparts store. Just beware that those replacement clips may NOT have the center stem pop-out feature. I couldn't find pop-out style panel replacement clips at Westlake or Advanced Auto.

I just spent 15 minutes sitting in my drivers seat while two guys from Oil Changes struggled and ultimately gave up trying to figure how to get at my brake light. This was my first hit on Google. I'm doing a facepalm right now seeing how simple it is. I'll go and get the bulb tomorrow. Thanks very much!

Great video. The only thing I would add is the carpet tabs have a center that pops out making it easier to remove. All other google sites had marginal written directions. I had trouble locating the two nuts that all of them refered to. I did'nt realize that they were hidden under the wiring harness tabs as pointed out in your video. Great job!!! It worked on a 2009 Altima as well.

I have a 2004 Altima and this process is the same.. Second time I needed this video. Great job and many thanks. 1st time was a right turn signal bulb. This time is was both brake light bulbs (who would have known).
Troubleshooting process used: Ruled out the brake switch since the window brake lamp was still working. The fuse still looked good but I swapped it with a known good one anyway. Still no brake lights. Used this video instruction to pull both bulbs and check them for continuity. Bam! Bad bulbs. Problem solved, and bulbs replaced. Thank you again!!!

Very helpful, thank you! Although, the carpet clips are actually two pieces that come apart easily and allow the clip to be removed without damaging it... Just use a small slotted screw driver to pry the "coin" shaped cap off the top of the clip (look closely) and the rest will pull out nicely...

Thanks a lot. This video really helped me. There are two things that your viewers should know though. 1. The clips that hold the fabric part on are two individual pieces. There's a little button piece that slides out of the main clip. Once you take that out the rest of the clip will come out much easier. 2. Don't handle the light built with your bare hands. The oil from your skin will cause the glass to heat up irregularly and bubble, resulting in a significantly reduced lifetime.

You rock, thank you so much. I've replaced tail lights before, but when I peeled back the carpet, I was, to say the least, befuddled. Your guide was straightforward and extremely helpful. The Hanes repair manual I bought for car was a grand total of not helpful to boot. Again, thank you.

Very useful video. I followed the directions (including using Jeremiah Patoka's suggestion on removing the clip. The process took very little time. The only issue I had was that one of the nuts insisted on me using the wrench almost the entire way to remove it after loosening it. The other nut came off easily using my hand after I loosened it. I saved my friend $25 going to the mechanic to replace this bulb.

@sweetjagirl You are welcome! Per one of the other posters, the life of the bulb can possibly be extended by not touching the bulb with your fingers. I know on halogen lights, the oil from even clean fingers can reduce the life of the bulb due to the high temp. However, on standard bulbs, I'm not sure how much it matters. Either way, now you know how easy and cheap it is :)

sorry for the delay in responding. Dielectric grease is NOT necessary. It goes on the metal parts of the tab of the bulb if that makes sense. It helps the metal components from degrading from moisture in the air thereby keeping a better electrical contact...basically, longer life on the bulb :D

@charger2538 you should try changing the front headlamp bulbs! Yes, there have been a couple other commenteors who have said the same. As I replied to them
    1. Not all clips have the center pop-out, especially those purchased from hardware stores. I spent a great deal of time at Advanced Auto Parts & WestLake Hardware 2wks ago looking for panel clips that have a center pop-out that would fit my car and they didn't have any. I will try O'Reilly & AutoZone next.
    2) Yes, oils on your skin can reduce bulb life. Good news, we know for next time ;)

    I have a question!
I got a 2003 Altima, and i have a problem with the rear stop light (right one).
When i push the brake, the right brake doesn't light up. However, when I turn on the lights (parking and low beam) the bulb does work.
I think it's a bad fuse, do you agree with me?
    Thank you for your time.

  • @EricaceaeCalluna
    @EricaceaeCalluna  13 років тому

@GregJHorak I changed the front light some time ago, but haven't had to since. I did some quick research and see that the 2003 seems to be a HUGE PITA. Sorry about that.
UA-cam won't let me post back a direct link, but do a Google search on this to see if it helps. nissanforums "how-can-i-change-bulb-altima"
Don't forget to align the headlight though. Park your car at dusk facing a wall/garage door, etc. use the screws in the housing to align the light beam.

My wife's 2005 altima brake light bulb keeps working its way out of the housing, causing the bulb to not work. We have to check it literally every day before she goes to work. I dont know whether this is a design flaw from Nissan or if the Sylvania bulbs we buy are too large for the housing. Either way it sucks...
