Great video man you inspired me to make my own MRE. I’m making my MRE’s based on your criteria in the video. I’m going on a wilderness survival course in two weeks time and will be bringing the home made MRE to test out. Once again great video. P.S can my comment get pinned ?
@@dadbudgetadventures I’ll post a update to let you know how it went after I come back from the course. Keep up the great work your one of my fav channels on UA-cam. Have a great day bro
I work outside for a local tree removal company. I am currently working in the Lawn Fertilizing Department. Every year the owner of the company use to buy Gatorade Powder and water coolers for every truck. The product they replaced the Gatorade with is Liquid IV each truck gets two large boxes of packets you add to bottles of water. It tastes great and the Liquid IV would be a great electrolyte drink for your MRE'S. Great video today.
There's a packet I use for hiking with a heavy pack or on really hot days, forget the name but it's green & it's made by the EnerC (?) people. "Electro Mix" I think. No sugar, no salt, but lots of potassium & a decent lemon flavor. You add a little salt from a shaker or a fast food packet or from nuts/trailmix you're eating. VERY good on heavy sweat hikes, so good for roofers etc too.
Just a little FYI: you were mentioning that bone or beef powder was part of MREs and rations as long as there has been an American Military, pre USA soldiers carried something called instant soup leather. It is a soup base that was dried into a leather (think fruit leather) and it could be reconstituted into a quick soup with the addition of jerky and foraged vegetables . It dates back to at least the medieval days. Townsends has done a video on it from the US Colonial times that shows how to make it.
Thanks for another great video! I recently bought a Barocook, and they've resolved the ouchy fingers problem. The neoprene sleeve is now a neoprene basket, so there's protection all the way around.
Another home run vid. We have used the bone broth powder for over a year, as an additive to homemade stews, chili, or as a drink. We have branched out, due to your influence I might add, into some of the vegan/vegetarian offerings for our meals. Found some that were edible with no lingering after taste. Thank you for sharing your views & findings with us. Continue on. See you on the trail.
I shop at Aldi multiple times a week. Since your video a few back where you said you were going to revisit it, every time I went I was looking for little items that would work. I’m sure you’ve seen these, but they have the small jerky packs, the tuna/chicken salad tins with cracker packs, the precooked rice, small tins of Vienna sausages. I always gravitated towards the trail mix as a good item for an MRE. Glad to see you included it!
They usually have a lot of secondary items that work well but finding those mains was an issue. I’m always looking for new and cool stuff though. Let’s see if I can do another one down the line.
My barocook came in a silicon sleeve with bottom. You may be able to get one sent to you .I wouldn't know about this great little cooker without your videos.
Very interesting video and really hits home with me. I've been a first responder since the late 1980's, and have lost count of the times I went to work thinking I'ld be home in eight to ten hours and it was two to three days before I was able to get home for a quick shower and to change uniforms. After going hungry a couple of times, I started putting packets of chicken, tuna, bbq beef and pork in a duffle bag with clean clothes and toiletries. I added crackers, granola bars and a camping stove along with instant coffee to my home made 72 hour bag (we didn't call it that then, guess we were ahead of the curve). Great work on this, and will be adding your homemade MREs to my load out. By the way, I have access to MREs that are military surplus, and you're are much better.
Thank you so much! The origin of the idea was from when I was a detective and would find myself on a scene or in the office working on urgent stuff for hours and not having a chance to go foraging.
I got the Barocook, thanks for your insightful vids, lost power last week up here in Michigan and spent the night bundled up in fleece eating cold tuna on bread. 52 degrees in my apartment wasn’t too fun.
Really appreciate you building these MRE's. I do suffer from Celiac Disease, autoimmune disorder that results in negative effects from gluten. If possible, could you create an MRE that would be Gluten Free, due to allergy. Need to avoid wheat flour, barley and rye. This would be helpful. Keep up the great work. Thank you!!
It’s a great suggestion but I have deliberately avoided doing a video on any specific dietary restrictions simply because I don’t know enough about them and would likely get it wrong. I have friends with celiac and they are constantly finding out the hard way how much gluten sneaks into things. My concern is I’d make a recommendation and someone wouldn’t follow up with their own research and they’d end up in the hospital as a result of my actions.
I have recently discovered your channel, and enjoy that you take a very simple and not expensive approach to Survival/MRE meals that still allow for everyday consumption. I look forward to watching the back log of video's and as someone that loves Aldi, I will see what my local story has to make and MRE with. Thank you so much.
It's fun to rack your mind on what could or couldn't work. I don't expect to learn anything (outside of the typical items always mentioned in the community) This video goes outside the box in what could be considered for a homemade MRE. Thanks
I stumbled across your channel over the past week while looking at MRE ideas and I find your videos very informative, entertaining, and balanced! Your presentation is great too! You could host a TV show. Thanks for the videos and my family appreciates your hard work to produce these videos! I have been sharing your channel too!
Bone broth is good when you dont feel good, like if comming down with a cold or if you get chilled at work. ( like if you get soaked walking accrost the parking lot and cant get home do to weather.)
When we travel across country I put those mylar bags on the dashboard and they heat up really good. It does take a while but it's free. Cans of soup work pretty good too- I put those on a towel in the back window. You can also put a can of soup in the engine compartment, it gets hot really fast that way
Also, find you a mouse pad for the bottom of your cooker doo dad. There's a gazillion of them out there as giveaways and people toss perfectly good ones because they get "bored " with them. I've used some for pot trivets on a camping trip
I only recently found your channel, and im so glad I did... your content is brilliant. Being in the UK, there are most of your US stores that we don't have, so I'm really glad to see Aldi. Have you tried Costco? Looking forward to your future videos. 😊
Something I was thinking, when you're doing the 24 hour MRE kits you should make sure the calorie count is as close to 2000 calories as you can get if not over. and also making sure on the single meal MREs you should be at about 675calories (or 1/3 the total need for a normal person for 1 day) With a good supply of protein and fat on top of the carbs.
At this point it’s not about dietary balance as much as just showing what options are available. None of these are meant to be copied exactly as most people won’t be looking to do single source meals.
I noticed some of those items in my local Aldi here in Florida! The first thing that I thought was "Is "Dad" going to review them? Amazon has Barilla pre cooked pasta, 7 for a little over $10. Thanks for doing these! You have been making my prepper pantry a bit more interesting!
Since I work out of my van I have made a few MREs, and bought a few. One of the things I did was stuff like a cracker/cookie pack, granola/cereal bars, trail mix, two powdered drink mixes meant for a 16 oz water bottle. Then I would do something like a complete bowl, tuna pouches, Spam can as the entree. Never really had a good side. I need to get back into that because fast food is a killer for both the body and the wallet.
Great video, great suggestions. The Patak meals are delicious. Pity they are seasonal at Aldi!! However they are available on Amazon but most grocery chains carry similar products. You can also find similar and sometimes cheaper at Asian or Indian grocery stores.
Love the products you choose especially the meatless ones and ones that can be eatenwithout cooking or heatingup. I look for them online so I can purchase the same. Thank you for this MRE addition to your already good video's ❤❤
It was a little hard to tell from the video, but was the barley & lentils dry? It looked pretty loose when you poured it in the pan. As for adding some flavor, that bone broth powder sounds like it might be a good addition to it. Thank you for showing us all the cool stuff that's available for homemade MREs. I'm gradually pulling together a disaster kit and I'd like to have at least 2 weeks of food in a luggable container in case we have to bug out in a hurry. The products you've been showing us are perfect for that.
That comment about the bone holds true. I have found Bone Broth tends to be more bland than stock or regular broth. I like putting bouillon cubes in my day pack as in a pinch it is a nice boost I have a suggestion for an MRE for you: all star. Pick the best items that you find from your local spots to make a super 24 hour MRE composed of the best finds from multiple locations.
I absolutely used that Tikka Masala meal in a recent diabetic friendly homemade MRE that I made. Nice choice! I also saw that Barley side you picked, but unfortunately too many carbs for what I was building. Instead, I used the palm rice from there. Finally, I can recommend the coconut macaroon bars from (I think) Elevation. Those are awesome. If you have ideas for low-carb diabetic friendly MREs, I would be interested. Keep up the good work.
In Springfield, Mo where I live we have freight and food sales place that always has all kinds of food stuff. If you have a place like that it might make for a cool haul.
Have you seen the "readywise" meals? I picked up 3 from ingles. It's a single dish in a bag. You just add hot water to the bag. Looks like the contents are freeze dried. 2.5 servings per bag. Less than 6 dollars. I'm going to use these in a few of my MREs
@@dadbudgetadventures it was a new item. I'm going to try them out today to see how they taste. They made some really good food options with these. I'd love to freeze dry stuff here at home. I just can't justify the cost of the freezer. I wonder if we could come up with a diy freeze drier people could build at home. That would make a great video.
Looked yummy the Barley and lintels wood have been good with the bone broth and some salt and pepper mixed with maybe a little less water? Have fun stay safe.
Do you have a Menard’s near you? It’s like Home Depot, but, they also have food. That could be interesting. Thank you so much for your videos. I found your channel a couple of weeks ago and subscribed. Loving it!
The Elevation bar is basically a Clif bar (they make a big variety of bar types). Happy to see an Indian pouch meal. I found the bone broth packets but they ran almost $2 each, which is pretty expensive... Something to find on discount.
No Aldis in Utah, but a very enjoyable video nonetheless. As I've commented before, I recently swore off military MREs as mere sacks of salt and sugar. Your adventures are eye-opening.
We got our first Aldi here in the last couple of years, still haven't been. Might have to stop off someday and check it out. On the topic of the Barocook, you mentioned you might try making your own fuel packets for it, would love to see that adventure. And while it may be out of your travel area, if you ever find yourself headed to Yosemite National Park on an adventure, let me know, I can make some local recommendations, I live just down the mountain from it and grew up in the area. Safe adventures! 🍻
I’ve toyed with the idea of making my own fuel packs but haven’t tried yet. We will see. I’d love to get out to that area. Beautiful country out there.
@@dadbudgetadventures I went to High School in Oakhurst, California, the last bit of civilization you see before the drive to the park. There are SOO many places to enjoy nature. If you do ever look to coming this way look up Mammoth Pool and Little Jackass Creek (Little Jackass Campground), two of my favorite places when I was younger. 🍻
The lentils and barley are my favorite.. usually twice a year aldi has the loma Linda foods usually in July and January.. they make 3 ingredient bars with peanuts chocolate and dates.. Im curious now if you have ever done a Lidl mre or if you have a lidl near by? Thank you for all the great videos.. since you started doing vegetarian and meatless my vegetarian parents have started to watch you.. not to mock you , but after 30 years of welding I don’t have a sense of what feels like until it’s too late so thanks for the heads up
I would always add the extra item in... it is one of those things that is better to have and not need, than to need and not have. In an emergency or disaster a few extra calories never hurts, especially if you need to share with a friend.
+1on the Aldi Elevation bars. I tried a bunch of the different more expensive name brands, but most are similar to what a chocolate coated paper towel should be like IMO. I get the chocolate chip Elevation bars, and I've been carrying one to the doctor's office with me for when I have to go in after a fast for tests. Sure helps a lot. I'll also carry a boiled egg every now and then if I'm feeling extra hungry. The other products interest me and I'll look into those Thanks for the video
I used to shop Aldi in the 1990's and early 2000's but they have changed so much since then that I quit shopping there. I tend to frequent Walmart and Save-A-Lot mostly as well as BJ's (Think Cost-Co and Sam's Club with a full grocery store). Aldi used to have a lot of affordable items and budget friendly items, now it's becoming more like Whole Foods and the prices are starting to reflect those changes.
Great video and thanx for your enthusiasm. Just a question, when you post the approximate price to you include the mylar bag in that price? Will you be doing a 24hr ration any time soon?
I don’t include the bag in the price because the way I package my kits is a personal choice that isn’t absolutely necessary. Not to mention I reuse my bags for other videos sometimes. My pricing is based only on contents because I figure people can use whatever method they like for packing. As far as a 24 hour MRE, I did one a few months ago. I may revisit it soon though from a different location.
@@dadbudgetadventures thanx for replying. I'm putting bug out bags together for my family so ill be taking inspiration from your ideas to set them up. Peace.
What a great kit, start to finish. THANKS! I want this for my regular everyday pantry! I LOVE lentils and barley. While I chow down on meat, I love vegetable based foods greatly. That all looks SO good. I hope my Aldi carries those two items. If so I will be bagging up MREs with these items. I'm with ya on not caring for protein bars. I dont mind meal bars, but rarely do the protein bars do anything for me. I've tried the waterdrop electrolyte drops. I'm on the fence about them. OK as daily drinker for low key electrolyte replacement but not something I want to rely on for heavy labor, ultra sweaty days, or long hard hike. Taste is good though-- very light. Probably great for those that need a good tasting electrolyte replacer. Takes awhile to dissolve. I like that brand of broth. They carry lots of flavors (not sure about Aldi). Fun facts that you didnt ask for, haha: The naturally occurring collagen (which contains arginine) in bone broth is considered "protein sparing", which allows whatever protein we take in to be better absorbed and to not be wasted. Helps body use it more efficiently. Different proteins are absorbed and utilized at different rates. Boring stuff, but I wonder if the original intent of including broth in MREs was for that as well as for comfort. 🤔
Thanks for making an Aldi video! Those granola bars are not our favorite either.... We really enjoy the dark chocolate almond peanut ones. There is also a cashew granola bar that's pretty good!
Cool video. Bone broth is good add. I use the microwave rice packs, and it could be a good add for flavor. Our shopping choices are limited to the big boxes. I am going to check out our world market. Is the water from the bar cooker usable? MRE flameless heaters are pretty chemical laden. Because I use the mess tins to heat pouches, I can use the water for other things like coffee or tea. I even use it for morning hygiene routine.
Seth is correct. The Barocook heats by a reaction of the water and quick lime in the fuel pack. The steam is non toxic but I wouldn’t advise using the water for anything else. Not to mention it doesn’t take much water and most of it gets absorbed into the pack. Kinda comes out like a puck when you’re done.
My eldest and I got some of those pouches at our local Aldi's a while back. Unfortunately, they're all gone now, because they were rather tasty - especially over some rice.
@dadbudgetadventures I guess I should have said semi shelf stable. Because my goal is usually a few days between grocery stops. So fresh cheese, pita, tortillas and the like is fine. One of my favorites is in the baby food section. The pouches of fruit and veggies. Your other aldi video addressed the excellent trail mixes. The tuna and chicken pouches and shelf stable bacon are pretty great also. I plan to watch your other videos on the subject. But I try to avoid walmart and the like, though frequently not successful. This is a great video series to make. Hoping you have a good shelf stable bread like thing. I enjoyed MRE bread from our rations when I was enlisted and I'm sad Fleet Farm doesn't sell that kind of stuff since the new owners. GG!
The broth would be good in all the mres. If you've ever had rumble gut or a pukey stomach, something easy on the system would greatly be appreciated. 😊 👍
Double beverage, double booster/walking snack? Oh yes! The fiber actually sounds like something I"d want after three or four days after GI contractor meals. :P
decades ago i did a winter soup of barley, lentils & hillshire cocktail sausages turned out very well. granted cocktail sausages aren't up to mre standards. now the first generation mre hotdogs might be.

Thank you for showing us all the cool stuff that's available for homemade MREs. I'm gradually pulling together a disaster kit and I'd like to have at least 2 weeks of food in a luggable container in case we have to bug out in a hurry. The products you've been showing us are perfect for that.
Love hearing that! Great suggestion about the bone broth. The mix was wetter than some sides but the broth would work really well with it.
That comment about the bone holds true. I have found Bone Broth tends to be more bland than stock or regular broth. I like putting bouillon cubes in my day pack as in a pinch it is a nice boost
I have a suggestion for an MRE for you: all star. Pick the best items that you find from your local spots to make a super 24 hour MRE composed of the best finds from multiple locations.
I will probably be doing a best-of menu at some point. I’ve had lots of people ask for that.
Great job! I need to go back and take a look around my Aldi's
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
In Springfield, Mo where I live we have freight and food sales place that always has all kinds of food stuff. If you have a place like that it might make for a cool haul.
I don’t but I do get out to Springfield often. I have family in that area. I’ll look for it next time I’m there.
Hi DBA! I certainly would not turn my nose up to that MRE for lunch. Good stuff!
It was pretty darn good, for sure!
Great stuff again Mr. L. Thank you for all that you do!
You’re quite welcome. Thank you for the support!
Guess I need to make a trip to Aldi! Well done!!!
Thank you!
Double bonus item. Hey people this guy doing work over here.
It’s all for you people ❤️
i like the canned corned beef called english c b cut in slices and fry like spam also the 85% cacao dark chocolate long shelf life even if bloomed
I see it there a lot. Might have to check it out.
Have you seen the "readywise" meals? I picked up 3 from ingles. It's a single dish in a bag. You just add hot water to the bag. Looks like the contents are freeze dried. 2.5 servings per bag. Less than 6 dollars. I'm going to use these in a few of my MREs
I’ve seen them but haven’t started using freeze dried meals in my kits yet. I have a couple in my get home bag in my car, just not in my ration kits.
I was thinking the same thing!
17:25 amen brother. That's good eating.
Absolutely!
Do you have a Menard’s near you? It’s like Home Depot, but, they also have food. That could be interesting. Thank you so much for your videos. I found your channel a couple of weeks ago and subscribed. Loving it!
Thank you! I don’t have one here but there is one where my folks live. I’m planning to hit it up next time I visit them.
You did it! Congratulations 🎉
Thanks!
Have you done a Tader Joe's? They have a really tasty canned Greek chickpea option that I just tried last week.
I tried recently with no luck but I pop in occasionally to see if there’s anything new.
Well done 👍
I hear Costco calling your name 😊
I really need to try that
Great video and explained very well. 👍
Might want to add Pepto Bismol next time, just in case. 🤪
.
That’s not a bad idea 😂
@@dadbudgetadventures 👍
The Elevation bar is basically a Clif bar (they make a big variety of bar types).
Happy to see an Indian pouch meal.
I found the bone broth packets but they ran almost $2 each, which is pretty expensive... Something to find on discount.
These bone broth packs weren’t cheap either but weren’t too bad that I walked away. I think the benefit is there though.
No Aldis in Utah, but a very enjoyable video nonetheless. As I've commented before, I recently swore off military MREs as mere sacks of salt and sugar. Your adventures are eye-opening.
Thank you so much! You can find the same entree and side items at other national stores so if Aldi is out maybe someone else has them.
Thank you for all the great videos.. since you started doing vegetarian and meatless my vegetarian parents have started to watch you.. not to mock you , but after 30 years of welding I don’t have a sense of what feels like until it’s too late so thanks for the heads up
Thank you! I don’t have Lidl nearby but I’m putting it on my radar.
I would always add the extra item in... it is one of those things that is better to have and not need, than to need and not have. In an emergency or disaster a few extra calories never hurts, especially if you need to share with a friend.
Absolutely!
+1on the Aldi Elevation bars.
I tried a bunch of the different
more expensive name brands,
but most are similar to what
a chocolate coated paper towel should be like IMO.
I get the chocolate chip Elevation bars, and I've been carrying one to the doctor's office with me for when I
have to go in after a fast for
tests. Sure helps a lot. I'll
also carry a boiled egg every now and then if I'm feeling extra hungry.
The other products interest
me and I'll look into those
Thanks for the video
Thanks for watching! And thanks for sharing that.
Great job including the bone broth powder and electrolytes. Wish we had Aldi!
Thanks! I’ve been surprised at how many people don’t have one nearby.
Our Aldi is still pretty price friendly. The meat is better priced than our local chains. I wonder if their format is different in other regions.
Now that you have juat done Aldi you definitely got to do Lidl. Really enjoyed this video.
Gotta find one. Not sure where the nearest one is.
@@dadbudgetadventures they're on Google maps if you use it.
Any kits you've made to keep in the car? Has to be very heat & cold resistant. Mostly freeze dried stuff?
That’s what I rely on for car kits, yes. Gets way too hot here to keep prepared foods.
Great video. I really appreciated your thoughts and tips
Thank you so much!
Peace.
I’m honored to be part of that! Thanks!
excellent tips and info, thank you
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!
You always come in with the best comments and information. Thanks for all of that!
@@dadbudgetadventures well thank you very much for saying that :)
Great video, I'm glad Aldi came through!
Thanks! Me too
Thanks for making an Aldi video! Those granola bars are not our favorite either.... We really enjoy the dark chocolate almond peanut ones. There is also a cashew granola bar that's pretty good!
Thanks for watching! I’ll look for those bars next trip.
Where do you get the bags? Great video
Amazon. There’s a link in the description box of any video that features them if you want to see the exact ones I use.
I even use it for morning hygiene routine.
no, the bar cooker water has chemicals, its a reaction to the powder of the packet.
@@SethCohn23 just like the mre flameless rations heater
Seth is correct. The Barocook heats by a reaction of the water and quick lime in the fuel pack. The steam is non toxic but I wouldn’t advise using the water for anything else. Not to mention it doesn’t take much water and most of it gets absorbed into the pack. Kinda comes out like a puck when you’re done.
My eldest and I got some of those pouches at our local Aldi's a while back. Unfortunately, they're all gone now, because they were rather tasty - especially over some rice.
Yeah that’s the problem with good food, it doesn’t want to stick around 😂
Now I've got to get to Aldi's!!
Do iiiiiiit!
@dadbudgetadventures 😂😂 I don't drive so I'll have to find someone to take me.
As a touring Cyclist I've eaten many great shelf stable Aldi meals.
I haven’t had much luck finding them at mine outside of the occasional items section. Wish we had more like this.
GG!
Thank you so much. I hope you enjoy the others.
If you’re near a GNC health store, not sure if they are still in business, try making your MRE from that store
Not sure if they have anything I can use but it would definitely be interesting.
Great video! I'll have to try Aldi again. 😊
Thank you!
I will get the Aldi brand spam in a can, pork n beans and can of green beans. Have ate them straight from the can, no prep needed on "camping" trips.
Go with what you like! That’s the entire concept right there.
Could you put whole package in cooker and eat out of package? No dishwashing?
Yes. I’ve done that too.
not sure if budget friendly but as someone trying to eat healthier what making mre from stuff at whole foods, natural groceries or sprouts?
I have done both of those. Scroll back a bit and you’ll find them if you’re interested in seeing what I did.
@@dadbudgetadventures just found your channel a couple days ago and have had a chance to look at others yet but definitely will do love these videos!
you found some great items, I need to head to Aldi😊
Love me some Aldi
The broth would be good in all the mres. If you've ever had rumble gut or a pukey stomach, something easy on the system would greatly be appreciated. 😊 👍
Absolutely. Kinda feel like it should always be there.
I need to make a few MRE's for work. Thanks. Was wondering if you had done five-Below? Okay... nuff said.
I have not but I’ll take a look
Double beverage, double booster/walking snack? Oh yes! The fiber actually sounds like something I"d want after three or four days after GI contractor meals. :P
For sure
decades ago i did a winter soup of barley, lentils & hillshire cocktail sausages turned out very well. granted cocktail sausages aren't up to mre standards. now the first generation mre hotdogs might be.
Sounds like a pretty good soup
I love Aldi's and I am going to head over there and make my own MRE :)
Happy hunting!
Super video, makes me want to head on over to Aldi😂
Thank you! You totally should.
Looks really good
It really was
