I’d definitely recommend looking into a 1.8 BP4W or VVT build in the future. I mean unless the lack of power really doesn’t bother you. It just seems the 1.6s do not fair very well for naturally aspirated builds. Lightly built up 1.6 ITBs seem to put down maybe same power as a stock NB 1.8. Fully built ones just slightly over. Now a days 170+whp is becoming common for NB 1.8s with mild head work.
@@biggboysouth sometimes it’s not about power, horsepower is addicting and the look for it is endless. In this case I think it’s more a matter of character, sound and fun
@@giulioposenato9332 I understand that argument, an ITB miata will rarely ever be a power house of an engine its all character. However I argue that ITBs on a 1.6 are little more than expensive noise makers and in some instances stock 1.6s can actually loose horse power due to intake flow velocity loss. If your going through the trouble of paying $1000-$3000 setting up and tuning ITBs why not source a NB 1.8 which is easily swap-able into any NA miata and benefit from both the upgraded engine and the ITBS which do perform better on those engines. If all you want is the sound of ITBs there are far cheaper and easier options that will give you similar sounds. ECU, AFM delete and new Intake pipe and filter is one option. That'll give you awesome ITB like induction sounds for a fraction the cost and is proven to gain you HP at the same time. Or for even cheaper just the new intake tube/filter will give you improved induction sound. I have a ITB NA miata as well and it was a lot of work to figure out and setup. Americans have a narrow view of performance. It is determined at a suburban stop light when the light turns green. As a result, Americans “sports cars” were its muscle cars. Go back 60 years as Britain was clawing its way out of bankruptcy after WWII. Some clever manufacturers of that era realized they could take their econo-coupes, add a little leather and a few extra hp, and the result would be the sports car. And people loved it. Not because it was fast or showy, but because it was fun to drive! What confuses Americans about the MX-5 is that they mistake the latter for the former. The MX-5 was never intended to be a high-performance car, but it thoroughly meets its goal of bring a hoot to drive. And that is what puzzles me about owners like this one. He admits freely that his NA is one modification away from his dream sports car. The irony is that in search of ever-greater performance, he is diminishing his car’s ability to be that combination of great things that identifies a true sports car. To my mind, the AC Cobra was a fantastic high-performance car. If that’s what you want, go buy one. But do not waste thousands building a Frankenstein out of a homely little Japanese roadster. In doing so, you are throwing out the baby with the bath water - which I acknowledge is a disgusting metaphor, but there it is.
It’s just that. He’s one modification away from it being *his* dream sports car. Everyone has different opinions on what they think the perfect version of everything is. The owner knows what he wants, and he’s working towards that. If we all thought the stock Miata was perfect, nobody would modify theirs.
And then British people started adding stuff like multiple carbs to these cheap sport cars. This car is something like all these tuned MGs or Triumphs. They are still not fast, but very fun to drive.
I think if there’s a car built for modifying, it’s the Miata. In terms of stop light racing, yes that is generally the benchmark for American performance driving, for better or worse.
How TF do you spend that much on an engine build and make 122whp? That's what a bone stock NB1 makes. An equivalent 1.8 build should make at least 160whp, which means this is down 20whp even after taking the displacement into account. If noise was the only goal, stick ITBs on the stock 1.6L and call it a day.
So why bother about Miata if you can buy for example Golf GTI or R or Civic TypeR and have pretty quick, yet very practical car? (come to Europe, we have even more of these here). Why do everybody has to go with turboed 1.8, to pursue more and more power? Is power everything?

ITB’s don’t really add a ton of HP. Mainly throttle response and sound. If anything there’s a little bit of power gained up top.
