Every once awhile, the West Coast of Vancouver Island sees a big abundance of squid and chinook salmon get into a feeding frenzy when this occurs. In this episode, we put away the trolling gear and use light spinning setups to catch squid and some incredibly fat chinook salmon!

So nice to see David still getting excited after all these years. One of the best fisherpeople on the Coast if not the world. Expert at salmon, halibut and all manner of bottom fish but he is also an unbelievable freshwater angler/guide as well as an accomplished pelagic fisherman and fly tyer. Not to mention a great guy. If you have a chance, book David or any of his expert guides in Kyoquot, Ucluelet or on the Stamp/Somass system in Port Alberni.

We've lucked out in the past four season with flat calm conditions and catching these fish with live squid made the trip even better.

Enjoyed watching this. The live bait bobber trick works even better when you have those huge multi acre baitfish schools that start 15 feet down to near bottom. Set the bobber stop so the bait is swimming just above the bait school. When a big salmon swims by and the top of the school moves deeper, the only one that stays high up gets inhaled.
The surprising part is how many times big chinook grab that bait, rather than coho or other small fish. The separation from the boat afforded by the bobber is the key to making this work.

It is! Because there isn't a flasher attached to the line and the boat isn't moving, the fish pretty much has full control on where it wants to go and can jump freely as you see in the video. :)

Lite tackle look's like a lot of fun. 10 lbs line will get them in it's a little more work but it's a lot more fun. Good job you three. You have a really good guide. These fish were heavily feeding on squid so it made sense to use them as live bait. Every chinook salmon we opened up had at least a dozen squid in the stomach.

I got to do that a week later at Kyuquot. It was the best. Got two fishing for squid with the Stinger too. It was too choppy in the outside water so we stayed inside. Your hook up ratio was a little better than ours. Dave is the guru.

We do that here in Puget Sound, only we catch massive 4# cohos, lol. Amazing fishing, and after all that, you may need to have your drags replaced! Your guide was having more fun than you were.

Thanks Louis! This was in early July and the squid were abundant throughout the summer. But like Dave said in the video, their presence is cyclical, so they may not be there next year again. Hopefully they still are so we can attempt this again.

The spinning rod is a Shimano Clarus, 9' long, rated 6 to 10lb. This particular model is now discontinued but you can get a similar model which is rated 8 to 12lb. We spool our Shimano 2500 size reels (Sahara and Sustain for this trip) with 15lb test PowerPro braided as our main line. We tie a section of 15 or 20lb test Seaguar fluorocarbon leader (around 6 to 10 feet long) to the end of the braided main, followed by the lure or bait.

For five years, we had been out-fishing other chinook salmon fishing techniques with small metal jigs that imitate the bioluminescent glow of squid. This was off the Northern Washington State Coast in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The technique involved spin-casting 1/4 oz Kandlefish, in the bioluminescent glow finish (BLG), next to the edges of kelpbeds near deep water points. This particular finish mimics squid as it changes hues, varying between blue, green and white.
That's fantastic Pete, thanks for sharing that. It is, in my opinion, the most fun way to fish for chinook salmon in the salt. A few years ago we were going to jig for them in Juan de Fuca but never got around to it, maybe we'll try it next year.

Ask for the Kandlefish in the BLG finish (bio-luminescent glow). Its squid-imitating glow is the best in the business! Sizes come in 1/4, 1/3. 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1 1/2, 2, 2 1/2, 3 1/2, 4 1/2 and 6 ozs. Prices are very competitive for these deadly fish catchers.

Maury Roper This was in early July. The typical salmon season on the West Coast of Vancouver Island is from mid June to early September.
Float with live squid for salt-water salmon......wow, somebody is getting creative! I've never thought of doing that.
It was pretty awesome! Always more exciting when a new technique works.
I remember seeing people using live squid off fisgard lighthouse , Victoria back in the early 80’s for springs

Not sure if it'd work for coho salmon as their prey is generally smaller and they tend to feed closer to the surface.
Loved this video! I'd like to know how the squid were caught. Did you use a sabiki rig? Something else?
These squid were caught on Gibbs Minnow jigs, which are originally designed for salmon. We used size 15g ones, dropped them to the bottom and just gently jigged. The key was to find the masses of squid on the sounder, the rest was fairly easy.
What time of year was this? I've heard of catching squid in BC, but I have never seen any myself. They would make some great calamari too!
This was in July. Squid around this region are only found during certain years.

That's my "go to" fishing rig a 4000 size shimano sahara on a catana rod recently I replaced the rod with a near identical one that's 3 piece and fits into a suitcase it goes everywhere from Western Australia to PAcific Islands and all of NZ and there very little I can't catch with it or at least try to catch from 20Kg Kingfish to estuary bream but best deep water softbaiting.

With some species I catch on LIVE bait I find it's best to wait 6 to 8 seconds before striking. ESPECIALLY if I use a float - a float provides an incredible "cushion" so the fish can't feel the rod!

Hi Peter, yes it is. We were fishing with Murphy Sportfishing in Kyuquot Sound. It's fairly remote so you'd need to drive up to Fair Harbour, be picked up by their boats, and the trips are 3 nights. It is best done with two other friends. Check out their website for more information:

Someone told me squid don't show up on sounders on account of not having a swim bladder. Goes to show the fish stories you might believe just going off what you hear in this hobby lol.
Either way I'd love to see more about just catching the squid, I'd go out just to catch my own calamari.
Yes and no regarding the sounder. Dave has a pretty high end sounder so it was able to pick up squid on the screen while others may not necessarily do the same. That's why we could pinpoint exactly where they were and jig for them.
We ate some of these squid. They are a bit too small and the mantle is a bit too thin for calamari. Back in Australia, we used to target Gould's squid which are in the 1 to 3lb range, and they were absolutely delicious when battered and fried...
They've have made huge jumps in technology the past few years. Check out the latest units with down imaging, side scanning, etc... They can produce images of the bottom structure and fish to near photo quality depictions. The twigs, branches, and stumps all look like exactly like the twigs, branches and stumps around you.

Try the kandlefish in the bio-luminescent glow white finish (BLG) to mimic squid. Sizes range from 1/4 - 6 oz. We jig-cast 1/4 or 1/3 oz K-fish off the kelp beds, west of Port Angeles, WA. For deeper water vertical jigging, the 1 and 1 1/2 oz favorites for chinook salmon. The Swain's store in Port Angeles carries a large inventory of Kandlefish but they sell out quickly. You might contact Sandy in customer service at the Wahoo Fishing Products factory in Punta Gorda, FL. She is a wonderful lady that can help you...941-205-3474.

I knew chinook salmons attack squid, but I wouldn't wanna use the squid as a bait. It's too expensive to use the live squid and I love fresh squids as much as chinook salmons hahahaha I normally use cheap anchovies :)
These squids were a little small for eating, but we did eat some in the end and they were very delicious as expected.

I hate to tell ya, (but I like to brag), we use floats all the time from the fishing pier and we catch lots of salmon.

I would like to know the most likely river of origin for these Chinook. I realize this was 2019 but this year, our Chinook season in the US San Juan Islands is limited to three days, one fish a day. So here you are each catching a total years worth for us but doing it in one day. I have seen statistics that a good share of the Chinook caught on the west side of Vancouver Island are hatchery fish from Washington and even Oregon. It doesn't seem to me there is a fair allocation of the fish going on. You are over harvesting.
Mike, it depends on where on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. In the past several years the WCVI has had a chinook salmon fishing closure outside the 1 mile mark, so all of this fishing is done inshore. Majority of these fish are Vancouver Island river bound, mainly from two hatchery systems - Somass and Conuma. Most Washington bound chinook salmon, as well as Fraser River bound chinook salmon, are travelling outside of that 1 mile mark (offshore).

I don't know if you are aware of the situation down here but we have one river, the Stillaguamish, where they expect just a few hundred native Chinook to return this year (was the same last year). They are listed as endangered and that is what is keeping us off the water. I have seen data from our Fish and Game that shows far more of these fish are being caught on the west side of Vancouver Island than in US waters. It's getting very frustrating when we have severely limited seasons and elsewhere they are very liberal. Primarily Canada and SE AK. We weren't able to fish for Coho at all last summer in the San Juans because of incidental catch mortality of the few Stillaguamish Chinook still in the area.

I fully agree with your statement. The fish are all heading up to alaska and alaska is spanking the hell out of these fish the most, then the trickle downs into bc headed for our rivers which we are dumping tons of fish in with shitty returns. The only way we are going to do this guys is stop keep so many fish. They are going extinct in front of our eyes. Everybody wants to keep limits keep limits but put nothing back.
Let the dam big ones go, they get hooked once or twice they wont bite again and they will make it back to rivers. You guys shouldn’t be keeping the 20+ lbers any more and i am going to be giving thumbs down on the video if you guys dont start showing conservation efforts at this point. You keep everything you catch without any regard for conservation. I let all fish over low teens go so they may have a small chance to make it back to the rivers. Dont net fish you dont plan to keep. Get a de-hooker, bring the fish near the boat leave it in the water, pull the trigger and the de-hooker will turn the hook right out the fishes mouth and they will survive.
Sorry but it's not the first fish on a bobber in the world in the ocean, I use floats in the river and the ocean. Some spots it works great for shallow water with current in the ocean. Jigging works too

Treble hook for salmon ha :)
Treble barbless, a norm in most saltwater fisheries.
I use them on and off too, there's no real reason to switch back and forth. When casting lures, I usually have trebles unless the regulations for that area say otherwise. Both hook types have pros and cons.
On a boat as they are in this vid, especially when there are several people fishing, it's usually set up with single octopus hooks and the only reason is that trebles can tangle up in the nets pretty badly when a fish starts rolling and thrashing. This can mean someone else loses a fish because the net is tangled with a fish and lure. For that reason, there are always 2 nets ready to go, one on each side because even singles can get tangled, and 2 nets comes in handy when several rods have fish.
@@FishingwithRod only in Canada though. Washington and Oregon fisheries don't allow trebles for salmon fishing in the salt.

As I've grown older I've become less of a fan of using live bait. It's just not necessary. Dead or simulated bait works just as well.
