the bit about joking about certain things some autistics do brought to mind how i recently saw neurotypicals dogpile on a neurodiverse person who tweeted humorously about a weird and funny thing they did as a child. because it was weird/gross they read that behavior as insidious despite it being ultimately harmless (tho unsanitary but most kids are lol). we really aren't even allowed to joke about ourselves without neurotypicals calling us crazy or "future serial killers". this movie is definitely a step forward, i just we can get that energy for other things ppl might not find as cute or quirky.

I watched this movie about two weeks ago, and i didn’t even realize that this movie could be read as neurodivergency. I’m a neurotypical so that’s probably why. I was more focused on how nice the queer representation was (i’m bisexual).

There is a concept in narrative media called "show, don't tell"... and I have a love-hate relationship with it. One of your points in this video reminded me of that. Also what do you think of said concept?

Loved this movie as well, and you nailed the explanation as to why. I can def see the #justsaytheyreautistic idea because it spells it out for everyone, but at the same time I feel like it’s a risky thing to do for several reasons:
    1) unless there is more than one of each condition, it’s inadvertently perpetuating the ideas of e.g. the autism spectrum being a monolith
    2) if they get it wrong, they’re now giving us yet another label that will be hard to shake. In fact, I think many of the examples where we’re being laughed at rather than with, are examples where it’s spelled out that the character is neurodivergent in some way, like e.g. Sheldon Cooper.
