I CRIED when the father gave baby Katie that moose in the video and said that giving up the log cabin wasn't hard for him at all like....please excuse me I'll just be sobbing in this corner here.
No seriously, I finally got around to watching this movie recently and it's the first time in years a movie has actually gotten me to tear up like this...
Sony Pictures Animation have made some good films before with Surf's Up and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. They were just overshadowed by the successes of other animation studios. That and the live action Smurf films and Emoji Movie were the laughingstock of the company too.
This is the first genuinely funny animated movie that pushes the “technology is bad” message ive seen in a while and it never feels preachy about the message either it is just pure chef kiss
That's the thing though is when it pushed the robots bad, it also pushes robots are good. Watching the movie I never felt most of the robots were evil, minus the Furbies, Pal did it because she felt neglected and the other robot AI were following orders. And do I even have to mention what goes on with Eric and Debrohbot. I felt like this movie's stance on AI was more humanity decides what AI will be like.
The thing is, the movie is totally coated with the "technology bad" trope on the surface, but when Pal and Mark are talking and he says "wow I guess technology really is bad for you" she rebuttals with all the good things that tech has given us access to. And she's right. It's people that are bad. Tech is just a medium that humanity just projects itself onto. If everyone on Earth were simply good to each other we could live in a utopia with boundless knowledge and ability to greet one another across the world instantly (like right now). While we fortunately do have those opportunities, a lot of the Internet is pure poison because humans are just naturally shitty. The "true" villain is really Mark, because Pal wouldn't have reacted otherwise. Of course, I don't think the movie is trying to be THAT deep, but it's just food for thought. Tech is inherently good, and could also be viewed as neutral, as a platform. The big ones who have control over it just tend to use it in nefarious ways.
My favorite lines: "NO! I HATE DINOSAURS AND I HATE YOU! BYE FOREVER!" "Oh, I dunno, maybe because you designed my replacement ON MY FACE!" "Is that a burnt orange 1993 station wagon? Or is it a-" "Is that a dog-pig-dog-pig-dog-pig-dog-pig-dog-loaf of bread" "The lavender one has found us! We must retreat!"
@@jahmerecrooms3162 On the scene where he accidentally changes the language, the camera focuses on the word "contraseña" (password in Spanish) and then it focuses on the ñ and then the dad screams terrified at the sight
Sony Animation has two modalities: - The worst and most stupid multimillion idea you've ever seen in animation - The best idea you've seen in animation with game-changing animation styles, techniques and technology No inbetween, and you know what, I'd take another Emoji movie if it means getting another Spiderverse or Mitchell, it's better than mediocrity
@@tomysshadow i feel like that shows a willingness to take risks, not everyone is gonna like it and not every shot is gonna hit, but the ones that do? Oh boy. Ill take risk taking sony over sequel and live action loving play it safe Disney that we’ve gotten the past few years
@@rubub8455 The choice of writers/creative directors is how. Lord and Miller were the saving grace of SPA and gave them Spider-Verse and Mitchells instead of more crap like the Emoji Movie
“WHAT ABOUT PRANCER???” “PRANCER BELONGS TO THE CANYON-“ I don’t often laugh during films but GOD I lost my MIND that scene was funny for like no good reason
I absolutely love how you can understand both sides of the central conflict between the father and daughter. The dad doesn't want her to feel disappointed if things don't work out, and the daughter just wants support for the ambitions she has. Each has their reasons and I honestly don't think one reason trumps another.
Katie: “Dad you’re gonna have to do the Rick Mitchell special” Rick: “Wait what did you say again?” Katie: “The Rick Mitchell special!” Rick: “I heard you the first time, I was just being a jerk!” I don’t know why but the way Rick says that in the movie made me chuckle.
They seem to have nailed the ability to make crisp stylized animation that has personality. It’s not about how much detail you can cram into one centimeter of screen it’s about the entire picture and I’m glad they get that.
ironically this and Spiderverse are some of the most detail-dense 3d animated movies I've ever seen. The amount of tiny background gags that sometimes appear for mere frames at a time is staggering.
With this movie, Sony Pictures Animation post-Emoji Movie basiclly has become the guy you dont expect anything about him, but he will surprise you anyway.
At first I thought this movie was generic “phone bad, book good”, and that goddamn one word title... but when I saw the changed title and the great art style, I gave it a try. It was great!
"Connected" didn't cut it,I'm tired of that kind of titles "The Mitchells VS The Machines" is so much more fun,I was extremely happy when I saw that title was back!
I just watched this movie recently and if you pause the movie where it says "No mules were harmed in the making of this film", there is a bunch of text at the bottom written by Katie where she calls herself the "unscripted" or something like that.
Was waiting for one of my favorite youtube reviewers to talk about this. A detail idk if people mentioned is that the introduction of The Mitchells made it feel like characters I was familiar with for years and watched its long running cartoon and this was the film conclusion, if that makes sense to anyone.
katie's character is so well written i feel like i'm going to cry just thinking about it. she's a teen character with Actual Relatable And Compelling Reasons as to why she's rebelling against her family?? she's college age rather than the younger 13-16 teen character we often see in these type of films?? she has such a fun and unique personality but still feels like an actual human teenager i could meet?? she genuinely gets along with and loves her younger brother instead of the "ew i hate my brat younger brother" trope for the 100000th time?? she's amazing!! she's a lot like riley from inside out, as in it really feels like the people who wrote these characters actually talked to teenagers and were thus able to portray them in such a sympathetic and engaging way
The part that I respected was that they coded her queer (and all the usual suspects are just gushing over that) but they didn't make it the central conflict with her family. That's smart writing that doesn't take the easy path.
Also the fact they made her part of the lgbtq WITHOUT MAKING IT A WHOLE PLOT LINE AND JUST HAVING A PIN ON HER WITH THE FLAG AND A FEW LINES IS AMAZING!! It’s not queer baiting and honestly made me really happy! Cuz like REPRESENTATION THAT ISNT SHOVED IN YOUR FACE LIKE “LOOK WE ARE NORMAL! THIS IS SOMETHING GOOD!” Like they don’t do that to others. Give us representation without shoving it down our throats and this movie DID IT!
Honestly this is the kinda movie that doesn’t need a sequel because it’s so good but at the same time would be awesome and wanted because of the amazing universe it has and what it could do with a sequel
honestly i think it could pull it off. the relentless relatability in katie going to definitely-not-calarts is enough for me to believe they could do a plausible thing around her navigating the woes of art school
Honestly, I absolutely believe that this movie deserves some sort of AWARD. I genuinely don’t think I can even describe how much I loved this movie while watching it for the first time with my family. It was pretty charming and hilarious, and I would absolutely watch it again.
The fucking scenes where Rick Mitchell struggles to use a computer are the funniest to me. It just makes me burst out laughing every time I see him just crying in the corner. And it's not only that joke that made me laugh a lot. This movies has a lot of jokes that just hit perfectly. I'm pretty sure this is the most I laughed at a movie before. This movie is a fucking riot, man.
All jokes aside, can we talk about how “the Mitchell’s versus the machines” is a much better titled than “Connected”? Cause like I was hesitant to see it when it was called Connected but now I have a way bigger interest in it with the new (or original if you want to get specific) title.
I like how the new title emphasizes the family a lot more, and it takes the tone down on like anti-technology stuff, much like how the movie is focused on family and only some throws jokes at the internet.
The 'Connected' title has a more serious tone to it, while the "The Mitchell's vs the machines" has a more wacky tone to it which fits the movie perfectly.
And what's worse is that THIS studio actually used different animation style in the book for their visuals with 2D/3D hybrids. It's sad and embarrassing that not even the Disney animation company hasn't utilized these styles in their films yet where they should.
I started crying when the credits rolled in. I think seeing the photos of the people who made this movie made me really appreciate the dedication that takes to make a movie like this.
@@heinaghost411 There was a very quick line of dialogue that seemed to imply that she had a crush on a girl at the university, so it’s pretty clear she’s definitely meant to be gay. And the fact that they just went for it and didn’t make it a major part of her character or even call that much attention to it is great. It’s just a thing she is that isn’t even worth acknowledging as out of the ordinary.
@@Nathan-kk6lb at the end of the movie during the video call, the mother asks Katie if her and Jade are official and if she'll bring her over for Thanksgiving, so yeah you're most likely right
Honestly the biggest fault I can give this movie is that it should've given the malfunctioning robots more screen time since everything they said was comedy gold and they were the best characters by far
Agreed. If Luca wins best animated film next year and makes The Mitchells vs. The Machines lose, I will Omae wa mō shinde iru my head for hitting it against a wall too many times from disappointment. 10/10 movie
I genuinely want to see Sony succeed as an animation studio since a lot of other studios are dying at this point. Also Disney needs to be brought down a peg.
I want them to succeed cause unless the emoji movie they like making movies with heart, and not cashgrabs like Disney, it is evident that they are making movies because they want to make good movies instead of doing easy cash grabs like the emoji movie
i honestly loved that the story was kinda predictable because we have had so many movies with twist villains and subversive takes that honestly this was refreshing as fuck to just have a movie where the story progresses naturally and logically with the emotional beats thrown in
Schaffrilas: expertly connects Squarespace to the Clone Wars Also Schaffrilas: Can’t think of a clever connection between a movie about the internet and a website sponsor
Actually the part in the climax where Katie gives her heartfelt speech only for Pal to be sleep-moding through it made me laugh cause it literally throws the ‘speech stops villain’ trope out the window. Also the WiFi scene was the funniest part of the movie for me XD
I mean the only “fake brand” i can think of is “goodget” and I thought that was really clever. Because Bestbuy and Goodget mean the same thing, just using different words.
Actually putting real brand names in the movie made it looks like a giant product placement. Didn't people always have a hate boner for real product placement in movies? What even weird is that in the movie they already have fake brand parodying real brand. Pal is already borderline Apple , and they have "Goodget" that was "Best Buy", and then the Shasta Cola which is "Cola-Cola". But then they just namedropped Amazon, UA-cam, and Yelp even though you never see the brand's logo show up in the movie. Making fake brand based on real brands is much funnier, imo.
Yeah, the only film I'm not excited for is Hotel Transylvania 4, but even that feels like it's a movie the studio had to finish making before they go to their new direction.

Partly pitched by Dana Terrace, received consulting from Alex Hirsch, storyboarded by many creators like Matt Braly, directed by Michael Rianda, produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller...this movie was made by A TON OF GENIUSES
This is probably the best representation of internet culture in a movie that I've ever seen. Some bits fell flat, sure, but overall it felt like a love letter to the internet.
I was shocked at how much of a cinematic masterpiece this movie was, until I remembered that a lot of people who worked on this movie also worked on the greatest TV show of all time, Gravity Falls.
It was honestly a breath of fresh air seeing an original animated movie being actually good and legitimately funny. Not only that, but it’s gotten to my top 10 animated movies list, gorgeous and hilarious
One thing I love about Lord & Miller's movies is that this is the third time that the protagonist of their animated movie learns to trust and love and to be loved by their father in their own special way. Rick and Katie Mitchell's relationship are extremely similar to Tim and Flint Lockwood from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs
I actually felt a little uncomfortable with how... close to home the main plot was. Not the robot apocalypse part of course, but the family part. It took a long time for my parents- especially my dad- to accept the fact that I wanted to be a storyteller, whether that be through novels or films or comics. My dad was so set on me becoming an engineer or joining the military, that it wasn't until I sat down with him and had a heart-to-heart that I felt like he genuinely supported me. My sister's in a similar spot and it really felt like I was watching her and my dad on the screen. But all that made me love this movie even more. I'd never related so strongly to a character before, and it also opened up my eyes to a lot of other stuff. These guys truly knew their audience when making it, and I'm grateful for that.

@@ninjapotatolorf6237 That scene was funny though.
