    The News Reporter scene killed me😂😂 I tested the Ora 03 at Gerotek and I was really impressed. Just like Ciro, the only thing stopping me from buying an EV is the pricing. A sensible entry point for me is R400k.

    I drove in more than 20 Chinese EV's the last 5 weeks. They are much more spacious in the back (legroom). They are quiet. The city is also much quieter due to lesser ICE cars. They also guarantee the battery life for at least 8-10 years. Chinese also use voice commands to change fan speed, open sunroof / windows, etc so they don't miss physical buttons. The Ora CAT is a medium size car, they make much smaller and cheaper EV's some equivalent to R120 - R150k. 4 seater the size of a suzuki swift.

      For 800k or whatever these things cost you can get a sick solar setup for your house and a 2nd hand PHEV. Might not be “flexing” but honestly this EV pricing is such a downer. Toyota/Mazda should just create a Corolla Cross/CX-3 type vehicle with no bells and whistles; just a decent 1.2-1.4 Petrol and a 10-15KWh battery for less than 500K. Forget the daytime running lights, alloys and all other cack that don't matter. Hell, they can give me wind-down windows like its 2003, but there needs to be a sub 500K PHEV if they want to drive adoption.

      See the many UK and Ausie videos about the problems and hazards of EVs. In the UK there is a guy challenging EV owners with a diesel BMW to ride with him from northern Scotland to London. Many took up the challenge and ended up crying trying to sell their EV as it could take a week to ride down while the diesel can do the trip in a day.

      Sure and that means you can't afford solar and a power wall to charge it, which means you are using "toaster" power to charge. Better hope there is no stage 6 or you won't be maing it to work and back the next day.

    Here's an idea. Why don't manufacturers make the on screen interface totally personalisable - like an Android phone? In other words, YOU decide what functions you want on the screen and what you don't want. YOU decide WHERE to put them, and even how BIG the controls should be. That would solve your fan speed issue - YOU could put that control in a prominent position on screen in a large font?

    The best thing to do is do your homework before buying any car, especially an electric/battery car. Parts are scarce for some imported ICE cars. Think zbout spares for these EV's.
    The rest of world is taking a step backwards with EV's and here we are trying to promote them in our environment. 🤦 Crazy stuff.
    Most markets no longer get government subsidies for EV's, neither here, so no surprises there.

      Most batteries come with an eight year warranty and there is plenty of batteries older than 10 years still doing fine. Batteries are degraded by number of cycles and not age and modern batteries can do a lot of cycles. I know Tesla is estimated at about +-800th km at the moment. There are exceptions off course like with any car. Batteries are also becoming cheaper every year and as technology improves they become better as well. In countries where there are a lot of EV's like Norway, shops repairing batteries are starting to appear.

      As a comparison, a new i3 battery (42 KWh) is €8,400 ex. Installation. As the market for second hand EVs grows, this shouldn't really represent much of a problem. Used Tesla batteries have become fairly common in the States to the point where there is a sizeable aftermarket forming.

With a fuel consumption of a claimed 4..3l/100km you can do well over a 100'000km's and still have some change left. Probably. I would say yes.
      Look up how far one could actually travel in a Nissan Leaf. Do you remember that EV? It wasn't tooo expensive, had an ok sized battery... a bit of enthusiastic driving and booom .... you're out of charge around 80km down the road. Sadly.

    Does the high price of ev cars in SA have something to do with government taxes on imported electric vehicles? I heard the tax almost doubles the price.

    • @Carscoza
      @Carscoza  11 місяців тому +1

      Yes there is an extra 7% tax on the base price of the vehicle, so it has a multiplier effect, as then the other 18% is levied and then VAT is levied. And government recently announced they're not dropping it for at least the next 7 years. It's absolute nonsense

    What many reviewers fail to emphasise in the price of these vehicles, is that our beloved government carries a lot of blame for the cost. EVs carry a 25% tariff (+8% higher than ICE vehicles) and no tax incentives.

    • @JJSmith1100
      @JJSmith1100 Рік тому +1

      They get hit with additional import tax and since they are in general fairly heavy they pay a higher license fee. Off course in most countries they get exempted from license fees and taxes in order to aid the switch. The more that gets sold the more will be available secondhand and the more people will be able to afford them, that way pollution can be reduced faster.

      @@des4719 In SA these cars are very expensive, but I spoke to a Jaguar owner once while he was charging. It worked out that to cover the same distance with my little 1.4 would cost 3x more than what it would cost him to do the same distance when he is charging at a public charger. Off course he has solar at home so when he is doing his normal driving during the week it cost him nothing, only road trips will cost him money and then its a 3rd of what it costs me. I do know that this is a concern to our government whom I understand is looking at a car license fee where you pay per km driven instead of an fix fee according to your cars weight like we are using at the moment.

    My concern about the retail price of EVs is the price. When you want to sell it, you want some of that money back, but the person buying a second hand EV is getting a reduced battery life expectancy. The cost of replacing an EV battery is ridiculous.
