The driver monitoring system does NOT work in this car in NZ and Australia, only works in the GT model. It is supposed to work but GWM China don't have a fix for it. They have been trying to fix my cars DMS for 8 months now. it is not a 5 star ANCAP safety without the driver monitoring system working. please share for the safety of ORA drivers.
Australia's situation is that with no car industry (finished after about 70 years) is free trade with manufacturing countries. Australia's economy is similar to Canada. Doesn't seem to make sense to shut out Chinese EVs.
Much better test then every German one I seen so far. In Germany it seems only German brands can get good test results. I buyed the MG 4 in this beautiful blue and I love the car.
You forgot to say the BYD Dolphin has an instrument cluster mounted on the steering column so changing the steering wheel height is not a problem :) Also, the premium spec Dolphin has an LFP blade battery with about the same range as my 2023 Tela Model 3 RWD :)
We've had a look at and test driven the MG and the BYD, couldn't get past the GWM's looks. Really liked the MG, and found the BYD slower and much more cramped feeling inside. Unfortunately even with the clean car discount I couldn't get the gorse out of my pockets to spend $40k on a car - to used to cheap UJI's. Are they selling the MG and BYD in Japan, and will be start seeing them coming into NZ as used imports?
don't forget to check to see if front passenger seats lay flat like some cars when checking if you can sleep in them, that's a huge bonus for me eg. the peugeot 3008 folds forwards to run along the same line as the rear and some others can be nearly as good folded back after pushing the seat all the way forward.
We don’t have the BYD in my country, but I think I’ll go with the Ora. MG and GWM are actually the same price here but GWM offers free service for 6yrs while MG says around 1400BBD per yr. Thanks for the review
We recently test drove all three (Are you spying on us again, Google?). I really wanted to want the Ora, but alas with its small boot and slow charging, it’s just not quite the right fit, annoyingly. The MG4 would be a great “track day car”, but the interior grates for everyday use. To be honest we never actually drive the Dolphin - we started with the Atto 3. While its torque steer is so great you feel like you’re about to do a wheelie, everything else just felt better and more intuitive. I was reminded of James May in Iceland driving the TT convertible: “Oh joy. This has been done properly, and I will happily pay the extra 5000 pounds”.

My wife got the dolphin extended range. The acceleration is crazy. A little bumpy and handling isn't the best. But overall, a nice car especially for city driving.
You also have to remember that ora 3 also has a crazy high Euro NCAP rating. Its the 11th overall safest vehicle they've tested with only offerings from Tesla, Mercedes, Smart, Lexus and Wey scoring any higher.
We get 15kw/100 from a Model Y. Always surprised when people say ‘this car is efficient’ when it is smaller, has less performance and is less efficient than a Model Y.
Just want to point out that despite the BYD don't have one pedal but it does have regen break. The regen break kicks in when you put your foot on the brake pedal so you can drive the car just like a normal ICE car. They did this by purpose to simulate that ICE automatic driving experience. I've driven one pedal EV cars before and if you can't turned them off, it is a bit of a pain on the motorway because when I don't want to use cruise control, the car will break quite aggressively when you lift off the accelerator. Don't have this issue with the BYD.

Great review. Although coming from Canada, the land where we can't buy any decent EVs, it's a bit depressing.
Australia's situation is that with no car industry (finished after about 70 years) is free trade with manufacturing countries. Australia's economy is similar to Canada. Doesn't seem to make sense to shut out Chinese EVs.
according to ev-database mg4 is more efficient than other two, correct me if im wrong
Great comparison review Gavin. Thanks mate. It'd be nice if you gave us the price pre grants.
Toyota Highlander IMO has one of the most satisfying wiper motion on a car.
@7:29 What are seated heats? Are they similar to heated seats?
I thought I was hearing things! 😂
It’s what he calls them on all his video reviews
It is humour.
Fantastic reviews Gavin - love the Spud Test :-)
Much better test then every German one I seen so far.
In Germany it seems only German brands can get good test results. I buyed the MG 4 in this beautiful blue and I love the car.
You forgot to say the BYD Dolphin has an instrument cluster mounted on the steering column so changing the steering wheel height is not a problem :)
Also, the premium spec Dolphin has an LFP blade battery with about the same range as my 2023 Tela Model 3 RWD :)
Wow. Please what is the highest range on a full charge in the Dolphin using normal road conditions and driving?
@@simonnweke4421 About 450km if it's not too windy/hilly drive :)
Are they selling the MG and BYD in Japan, and will be start seeing them coming into NZ as used imports?
don't forget to check to see if front passenger seats lay flat like some cars when checking if you can sleep in them, that's a huge bonus for me eg. the peugeot 3008 folds forwards to run along the same line as the rear and some others can be nearly as good folded back after pushing the seat all the way forward.
i don't think you should be laying flat in the front passenger seat, some one needs to be driving the car, and you would crash
MG4 passenger front seat can be tilted flat.
Such a great review Gav! Well done.
I'm going to vote for you Gavin - bring on the Beige!!!
Thanks Gav!
Thanks for the brilliant reviews Gavin, very helpful and great content. I can confirm the BYD Dolphin definitely has a tow rating.
I would like to see the comparrison of the
Essence - Premium - Ultra
I am very interested, but not in the base models.
I have the Dolphin Comfort and can say any issues with performance are remedied with the 150 kW output motor. It goes like a stabbed rat.
@@oxaile4021 Just bought the Dolphin Premium in Australia, top spec, we oly have the two versions.
I pick it up tomorrow, so far I have only driven the basic version.
Note the mg4 can have heated seats and automatic seat adjustments as well.
Great video. Happy I stumbled across it and even happier that I'm going with the MG4.
Great video - very thorough and fair, and with some dashes of humour thrown in! Thanks.
But, can that big, bright screen be turned off at night when driving? I don't mean dimmed, I mean turned completely black.
Do any of them have a recording dash cam?
First time I have seen you Gav and pretty impressive comparison 1thing you missed was the air conditioner, that's very important here in Australia maybe not so much over there, anyway enjoyed your review, I don't own either yet
Hard day to do a release when the Cybertruck is the buzz word.
Excellent effort tho as usual.
is there a review of the Mini Cooper Countryman EV???
My love is MG.. just the larger batteries, the heat pump and the better interior should bring me to Dolphine...
Our long range BYD Dolphin is averaging 13.7 - 13.8 kWh per 100km over the first 1500km
Have you tested the BYD on a normal road conditions on a full charge?
What is the highest km you were able to attend
I can't watch any other car reviewer now, you are too fun and lighthearted, the rest are like an overcast day.
Greetings from Oz!, Brilliant comparison video mate, I would also go for MG.
Gavin how about periodically doing updates on the second hand market in Aotearoa? Most Kiwis are waiting for second hand, $30G is a bit too much for most. On that are these models in Japan? Because that would be very good for our used car imports.
BYD Dolphin is being sold in Japan.
@@EspakhoDo you know what charging plug they have in Japan? I guess the same as the Leaf; Chademo and type one. Not ideal for NZ in the future, but workable.
And thanks again for very entertaining and useful carvideo, that stucks me by the computer again...
The best comparative video.
I hope you'll adopt 'Hubnuts' wiper assessment system - its genius
We get 15kw/100 from a Model Y. Always surprised when people say ‘this car is efficient’ when it is smaller, has less performance and is less efficient than a Model Y.
But also half the price and half as ugly 😂
I subbed because its very comprehensive and fun to watch as well.
What is the situation with BYD cars etc. bursting into flames - has it been addressed yet?
Well done,
hummer and knowledge 😅😅😅
Hope to see some of them at Fully Charged Sydney 2024
