2 GB for 1080p Gaming
4 GB for 1440p Gaming
8 GB for 4K Gaming
lmao, no. No games uses 8GB at 4k right now. Even MGS:GZ wasn't even using 3 at 4k.
Standards if you looked the new Galax 980 review in LTT channel you'd not that it is not always the case, the 8gb 290x was only 2-4 fps behind at 4k the 980 classified and the galay 980 and that is half the price and the power of it is clearly less, the only thing it has is more vram
Depends on the games you play. You can play old games like Half-Life 2 at 1080p and it will run fine with 1 GB and maybe even with 512 MB. There are even games today that aren't very demanding and won't need 2 GB to run properly on at 1080p.
***** 8GB of VRAM has nothing to do with the 290x's performance. The 290x 4GB has been right behind the 980 for a while now. You fell prey to an idea that was even explained in this video. More VRAM =/= More FPS. *Not a single game* out right now will even come CLOSE to efficiently utilizing anything close to 8GB unless you're playing 4k and somehow using SSAA x10. Games like SoM with a recommended "6" were running fine on cards with 3 like my 780s and other's 780tis. Raw performance > VRAM, and we'll likely need far stronger cards before we even come close to utilizing the 8GB on new cards.
Standards if you read carefully what I wrote than you'd know I specificity said at 4k, and now you telling me that it has nothing to with the more ram unless it's 4k, so you are basically saying the same, or if not the same at least it is not a contradiction

+Mutahar Farooq and if it was amd cards.
+Mutahar Farooq Thats not really how it works. Considering most games are console ports and dont use SLI, games wont be coded to use it. Either way, you cant buy more GPU vRAM lol youre stuck with what you got.
Mutahar Farooq I know. Thats not related to the vRAM were talking about lol. The vRAM can't be pooled together unless the game is coded to do so, which is unlikely. What did you mean by "... more ram with directx 12 instead of buying more from an untrusted company" though?
Mutahar Farooq You dont make sense, but AMD's R9 380 can be found cheaper than a 960 and performs better....
Mutahar Farooq AMD has Freesync (same as gsync) crossfire (sli) their own recording software (like shadow play).... Nvidia and AMD don't offer many new features. AMD is offering better perfiamnce at cheaper prices, albeit using some more power.

If games would not be optimized as shit 2 GB could be enough for 1080p or 1440p.
just look at games like The Witcher 3. Even with highest settings in 4K it doesn't even reach 3 GB.(about 2.3/2.4) And then play Rise of the Tomb Raider, The Division, Black Ops III... in 4k. 6 GB are not enough. Just why?!
Black Ops 3, lowest settings, 720p, FXAA, about 1 GB! In medium settings, 720p it goes over 2 GB. I didn't test 1080p highest settings since I have a 2 GB 750Ti.
The other values are from a friends PC
games use as much vram as possible to run smooth, if you have more vram its gona use more to run smoother
+Naruto Uzumaki If you watched the video, it was exactly the opposite lol.
You are right , whith my old gtx 660 games like The Witcher 3 , Crysis 3 maxed out 1080p did not used more the 1.8 gb.

Rise of the Tomb Rider used more than 6gb
Call of Duty Infinite Warfare used up to 8gb of vram in some cases , but with an average around 7.5-7.8gb
Dishonored used more than 5gb
Titanfall also over 6gb
In conclusion sh*t optimization.

Very nice and informative video, speaking of Shadow of Mordor, I recently tried to run it with my Geforce GTX 1060 3GB and I experience short lapses of stuttering on a regular basis, not to the point where it is unplayable but it can definitely get annoying. The game has so far been set to the standard user settings. I was wondering if this problem for the most part has to do with the capabilities of my GPU or my CPU which is a Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-7500?

So what you're saying is I need all the VRAM?
there is never enough VRAM bud
well it depends
for added future proofing, put them all in quad sli.
Jimmie Ervin or simply dont expect 4k in every game 4 yrs down the road. Your system should be "future proof" in a sense that you will likely be able to run most stuff for the next decade if you built a super beast now. yes it will not always be top of the line but if you do not demand perfection then the hardware should last quite a while.
kappa, bro
“...3GB of vram”
Quadro 8000: *laughs in future...*
To be clear, sometimes, some gpu may have more vram than they can use,ex: i have a laptoo equipped with radeon R7 M440 dedicated graphics, the card holds 4GB of Vram, yet the gpu is so weak that it can barely get 1.5gb of ram usefull, the only advantage of the 2 additional gigs is that instead of getting 2 fps on high end game and high graphics, i get 8fps
You taught me something today , i was honestly already aware that adding another GPU in crossfire or SLi did not double the VRM ram , but i did think the 290X2 did have 8gig of usable VRAM.
Thank you Linus , you saved me a costly mistake
Yes, they are sneaky little fucks aren't they?
I wasnt sure still i think maybe a 290x+270x 4gb edition is better option since your wont use more then 70% of the 2º gpu (maybe there is no 270x 4gb edition abd maybe im completly wrong but still until anybody explain me otherwise....)
vincent metzker WTF?
sli and CFX use 99% on both GPUs depending on the game.
vincent metzker You can't crossfire a 290X and 270X , they have different architectures.
Christian Louise Didn't catch that
thought he said 2x 290x
what a noob lol
Can you do a newer version of this for 2016/2017
When he says the '9' in 970, replace it with a '10'.
Like he said, it's based on what you have, your screen resolution, what games you play....
i had dual gtx 580's that could max out BF4 but I got consistent stuttering cause I was hitting the 1.5 gb vram limit then though it had enough power to push out 60 frames with that power.

Here’s my question on VRAM, I have a 1070, that I’ve had since release, and the other day I was looking at my video ram. This card has 12 gigs of ram, and when I originally used it I remember seeing “available v-ram” in the graphics settings. Originally it showed 10gigs, but now it’s only 4 gigs available. Is there a way to clear this cache, or is it a big deal?
I’ve noticed from purchase years ago, to now, that games I play are 10-30 FPS less than they used to be, but I’m sure it’s an age thing as well as a bottleneck due to a cheap cpu
I have a question,

I had an interesting thought while watching this video: why do graphic processors and vram come in a single unit? How come they aren't separate like a CPU and RAM? Of course this would completely change how mother boards are designed and probably lead to the splitting of Mobo market but could be an interesting concept. I'm guessing that in the early days of gpu it's was easier to design these cards for connecting to a pci but in an alternative history what if the standard for PC's was two sockets. One for a CPU and the other for a gpu with seprate ram ports one set for cpu and the other for GPU.
He says in the video. The closer the memory, the faster it is to access. Like, physically closer. So the ram has to be on the card itself.
Old but still relevant. Thanks.

My question is: what do you think most likely is the culprit - the RAM issue, VRAM, insufficient processing power, limited storage for caching, a bug in Google Maps Street View - or all of the above?
Thank you.
One would think, any computer with online acces, a modern browser would have no issues running Google Maps Street View without glitches, but no so ageing, once top-tier My MacBook Pro.
ok so if lets say i need a graphics card in budget (200-250$) which could run any game then what is the best graphic card to buy?
All I know is that my GPU (GTX 550 Ti 1 GB) can play Alien: Isolation on max settings on my 1600 x 900 display. Not 1080p, etc. but gotta use what I got and can afford, lol.
Define "can play"
epicdiabetic1 As in, a playable frame rate. No stuttering, etc. 30-40 fps tops.
However, recording the game takes a hit on the frame rate regardless of the settings for the game, but it's still more than playable. However, the default settings look pretty good, so I use them instead to record the game.
I have 11 gameplay videos on my channel.
epicdiabetic1
apparently you've never seen how optimized alien isolation is and technically is a medium level graphics game, everything is pulled from the ps4 version but will slightly better lighting and AA
Andrew Russell Although, like many games, the fire, etc. seems very over-saturated. So in Premiere, I applied the FilmConvert effect to my 2-3 latest gameplay videos to bring the saturation down a little bit and also make it mimic a certain camera and film type.

Low vram
Here in 2019, why someone will use 8Gb VRAM?? And nowdays people actually get mad if the mid end cards don't have at least 8Gb of VRAM
So if I am hearing this correctly, high amounts of VRAM isn't highly needed but almost required if you're doing 4K or surround?
Man, I might end up getting an R9 390 for my build. 8 GB VRAM.

390 is not fast enough for 4K, it has too much VRAM IMO. If you go over 5GB, then you are likely getting 30fps and lower. In 1440p the 390 is excellent tho, at 4K you may have to lower some settings to get 60fps.
4K and surround is too taxing for modern GPUS, the best GPU now for that is the 980 ti, preferably with a custom cooler to get even more performance. That GPU can barely hit 50fps in most games at 4K, so SLI, currently, is the way to go.
+josh Subet you seem to know alot

I like how he presents the video
Hey which i5 processor will you recommend to upgrade my i3-2021 IIntel Socket 1155LGA
0:22 why is the amd logo green and the NVidia logo is yellow
yeah he is colorblind
Colourblindness is a social construct! At his view, AMD is green and NV is yellow, but the society doesn't agree!
no nickplayz is just colorblinded
I'm not colorblind I can see that normally am is red and Nvidia is green
nah you are
I just watched this in 2018. who get's the paycheck this time?
PS: does Linus ever age?
nop an neither does my titan .... hes a pro m8
EsteBandido4444 No. And his voice never changes either; he’s still going through puberty.
Not till 2020. Damn that beard is sexy.
Thanks alot Linus you've been great last couple years, that I've been watching I mean.
Can someone help me if i want to play games like dota 2 and do animation on blender which gpu should i get? Higher vram? Help
Linux, this video needs more Gigabytes. :)
Linux XD
***** Aren't you the dude that gave me spiders?
I'm extremely stuck...
GTX 1060 6GB or RX 580 8GB, herlp.
I'm thinking of getting the Asus ROG Radeon RX 580 Strix it's RGB so i'll get like 40% FPS with RGB.
Rtx 2060 > Vega 56 > gtx 1660ti > gtx 1660 > rx 580 8gb > gtx 1060
it depends.

My question is, on the latest games you know in high settings, what is the vram usage of that game in high settings? Cause im not a gamer but i want to be build may own gaming rig. What game is the highest usage of vram now?
can i use two low end gpu amd one 2gb and the other 1gb to get alittle push on performance jst curious
i am wondering whether to get the 4gb rx 470 or the 8gb rx 470. I am probably going to keep this card for a couple of years so i want to know if 4gb vram is going to be enough in 2 years when i may have a 1440p monitor and there will be more demanding games. please dont suggest a rx 480 4gb i cat afford it and i found a very reasonably priced 8gb 470.
so do i need 4gb or 8gb of vram for the next two years?
just get a gtx 1070 or 1060
4 or 8 GB of VRAM for the future
More vram is required if you are using a very high resolution, also the textures loaded in game. The 4gb should handle the 1440p on most games today, but if you can afford the 8gb version, you should go for it.. VRAM will not dramatically improve your performance in game, depends on the processing power of the card
James Bond Are you so fucking stupid that you can't even read?
Raiden yes
It depend on your resolution :
1080p gaming only use about 1500 MB - 2500 MB of Vram
4K gaming can use up to 6-8 GB of Vram
GTA 5 is the perfect example because that game had an "internal Vram usage counter" on the settings.
So ? if you're just 1080p gaming, you don't need more than 4GB of Vram, but if you're 4K gamers, you will need 8GB (or even more) but, people who gaming in 4K usually use the fastest card anyway, you can't play 4K with GTX 750 Ti or R7 350 card.
IndraEMC so just get the rx 480 4gb if I'm just playing at 1080p?
MegaGames yes, and if you bought reference RX 480 4GB card, you might be able to unlock that card to 8GB (i'm serious, google it), you got extra 4GB for FREE.
So should i buy 1060 3gb because my monitor's native resolution is 1680x1050 will it be enough in the next 3 years with at least high settings
DoubleM GTX 1060 ? that's already OVERKILL for 1680x1050, buy GTX 1050Ti instead and save some money :D
Thanks man but i'll probably go for a gtx 1060 for future games
Is it true that if you get an upgraded VRAM card, you can run the risk of burning your motherboard on a laptop?
Because I have an HP pavilion with dts sound. It's got some good things going for it. An i5 equivalent AMD processor, 12 Gigs of DDR3 RAM, a terabyte of hard drive storage..
the only thing is the Graphics card. It's only got about 700 megs of VRAM on it, and I want to be able to run games like Overwatch on it.
Am I in danger of burning my motherboard if I upgrade the VRAM in my laptop?
i Have an actual question, i run destiny 2 on pc on like, 15 fps, but i can run csgo, rainbow six siege and rust at high grafics with a 960 gtx, and 16G of ram and like 16000 m of Vram but the allocated vram for Destiny is 128, so, it says in the game that i need like 2500 vram but i can only use 128 '-'
Tip 1, lower your resolutions to the lowest
Tip 2, find your screen size and multiply it with 4x frame rate. That's how much VRAM your GC is using. Buy the GC according to it.
Ah, yes, the Amd fsr strategy
Talking to people is the hardest part.
My pc keeps Getting overheated then I lag so much I need to put some fans in there recommend any ?
I play at 1080p with my GTX970. So even with the VRAM issue goin' around, I've had no issues. People need to realize, this card was built for 1440p, not 4k.
EMPiiRE SLI changes that a bit however.
guido van der wal No, don't sli 970 for 4k, maybe the 980 but I have seen games use more than 4 gb of vram on 4k, gtx 980ti and titan x is your best bet.
what is Linus doing iN NCIX?
He used to work with them
Ok so I started playing GTA V again recently.
In the graphics settings there’s a bar showing how much vram i’m using. I have a gtx 960 2gb btw. The bar in the settings is red, showing me i’m using too much vram. But it doesn’t seem to affect my gameplay. Maybe I get frame drops when in areas with loads of trees or loads of people.
It seems fine for the most parts, but what i’m wondering about is, can the gpu get broken or overheat etc when using too much vram? I’m scared of breaking it, even tho performance seems fine.
Those ingame vram meters are just basic, "eyeball" estimates if you will. As long as your temps are okay then your hardware will likely be fine.
I was running gtav on PC with an i5 4670k and an ancient r7 260x 2gb vram card and I was hitting 60 frames regularly. Just watch temps
so when he says that if the gpu can only use x amount of vram... does anyone know of a graph plotting strength of gpu vs normal vram max optimal use...?
I play star citizen with a 1060 6 gb and 16 gb ddr4 off of a ssd with a 17 7700 kadylake. The game runs pretty good !
2 GB is minimum these days but 3-4 is the sweet spot.
It really depends on what resolution you're playing your games at, for example I can run BF4 no problem with my 512mb gpu @ 720p.
***** The R9 270X with 4GB of VRAM came in around £155 on Amazon :)
MrPiikkipallo
Well yeah. But I believe he was inferring to 1080P w/ probably AA and higher texture quality.
that's easy it would be just £33
Jeez this was 5 years ago
Help me.. i upgrade my V ram.. but after that, the share V ram was upgraded instead the dedicated ram.. pls help me
Hey Linus, If we have same amount of VRAM, why SLI than? Why trowing 2400 E on 2xgtx Titan?
that was really helpful thanks, but you didn't recommend a decent amount of vram with a budget
A Blue I guess 4gb is alright
YET JUST A BIT A DOG: The minimum these days is DEFINITELY 4 gb. 2 gigs shall do too but never expect anything above 30 fps with 2 gigs though unless you run a really old game perhaps lol. Even that......it's unlikely to reach above 30. 4 gigs nowadays should be the minimum if you want a really good performance.
Should I get a GTX 1060 3gb or an RX 470 4gb? I know the 1060 is better right now but I want to know the approximate lifespan I would be getting with these two GPUs
Spend a little more for the 6GB 1060.
You can get the rx470 8gb also.
gtx 1060 3gb is worst option to consider .
I recommend rx470 4/8gb , rx480 4/8gb , gtx 1060 6gb.
Oliver Culling older Cod advanced warfare and ghost games hover around 4gb of vram of 1050 ti in my 900p lg ips monitor with ultra settings and AA maxed.
so 6gb is recommended for 900p and 8gb for 1080p atleast if I tell yuh seriously
I can show the photos of screen taken
I play
battlefield 1 and 4
farcry 4
farcry primal
gta 4 and 5
witcher 3 wild hunt
rocket league
call of duty :-advanced warfare
black ops
ghost
cpu :g4560
Ram :- hyper x 12gb
msi b250 board
0 .... havr fun
5 years later, I am still watching this video and wishing you would build me a system :-)
I'm playing Elite Dangerous Odyssey using a Radeon RX 5600 XT (6GB) VRAM. Does this have anything to do with the game crashing all the time?
Nope. Thats on the Game. Odyssey is known to cause problems. Try Horizons, that should work reliably :)
@@Nethan10Troi But I want to walk around on the planets 😭
Thanks for your help! 👍
Gta iv, launched on April 29, 2008 uses 1.4Gb vram on max out settings 1080p. That is 6 yo game...
That is a console port
runescapefan0001 One of the shittiest at that
with mods it uses 3.6gb's
Call of duty Advanced warfare 1080P used 3gb V-ram
looked like shit, yet used all the ram.
Sanic The graphics are amazing.
