  • Some people put their PCs to sleep to save energy, some people DISABLE sleep so they always have access, but what's the best solution for you? Whether a PC should be set to hibernate, sleep, or be shut off depends on the situation, and your personal preferences regarding gluten-free food. Don't ask me how that works in, it just does.

I turn off my PC, unplug it, and then completely disassemble it and place all of the components in static resistance bags, and then I reassemble it when it's time to start back up.

Mrs. Roper I get 6 hours of sleep a day and it’s perfect. Everybody is different.
And because I have been Bodybuilding for the past couple years, more than 6 hours of sleep causes my muscles to tear more and become more painful.
Btw I sleep from 11pm to 5am and my schedule is
      -Eat Breakfast + Coffee
      -Morning Jog
      -Work
      -1.5 Hours at the gym
      -Sleep
And this schedule requires me to sleep the same amount of time every night so I can fit all of these into my schedule every day.
      Life’s great and very refreshing!

For probably 4ish years I put my computer in sleep mode each night and rarely powered it down completely. Now the past 3ish years or so I have been powering it down each night instead of putting it in sleep mode. I noticed some improvement in my computers 'health' having opted into powering down nightly and will definitely continue to do so having lots of experience with both. But everyone's gonna have a different opinion I'm sure, and when all said and done, my computer worked fine with either method.
&& despite having a cheap harddrive I can spare the 7seconds of bootup time... its not like I sit there an watch it anyway pft turn it on and go make some coffee son. Is it still 7 seconds of boot time if your there for 0seconds of it? :P

+Daxxie GFX (Gaming) It's like what Linus said, doing this isn't going to dramatically deteriorate the components to the point where they're going to die in a relatively short amount of time.
Every component dies eventually. The point is to have them last long enough for your needs. For example, I tend to replace my GPU every 2-3 years (I usually get the highest or second highest tier in a given period of time). Because of this, it's of less concern to me if my particular practices leads to my GPU having a greater risk of failing at year four instead of that same risk existing at year six. This is of a greater concern to those that replace their GPUs less frequently, and of zero concern to those that upgrade every year.

Best advice is to hibernate instead of sleep if you are going to one of the 2 instead of shutdown... but I suggest that you save your work first and exit if you were typing something in a password protected document for example. It does not matter if you have a hard disk drive or not as either way it should not take too long to turn back on, it should still be faster then if you just booted up the computer instead.

watching this in 2019 i learned something
My brother has 32 gigs of ram and was getting blue screens. I asked him what he was doing, which was mostly video games, opening 1000 applications, and *putting his computer to sleep at night*
It turned out after many months of periodic troubleshooting that one of his ram sticks was not working properly. Something about read/write errors when we ran a ram test. When we pulled that ram stick out, it solved the problems
I figure what happened must be putting the computer to sleep was putting a chunk of data onto the bad ram stick and when it restarted, the bad data caused an unrecoverable error leading to the Blue screen.

I'm not an expert. But, from hearing experts talk about this, I think one can fairly assume that the only thing that could potentially die from turning off your pc every day is your HDD, which is one of the cheapest components on your pc (atm, you can get 1tb hdd for 30 bucks). You should back up important data anyways. And that's only after years of use, so I think it's worth it, since pretty much pc runs really smoothly after a fresh start.

  • @nmelcam1

Great video as always Linus. Just a question, don't all electronics components have an Average Rated Lifetime Hours ? Meaning that leaving the PC On all the time is a matter of necessity (Server, Remote Access, etc) rather than a convenience. Although I'm almost certain that the average rated lifetime hours of PC components is very high, but it still is there. Please correct me if I'm wrong. :-)

      @Chuckiele 7 років тому

Waking up from hibernation with an SSD is way faster than with an HDD but it obviously isnt faster than booting normally because booting normally with an SSD is also faster than with an HDD. Especially when running WIndows 8 or 10: Those have a feature called Fast Boot which is basically semi hibernation. It writes everything system relevant to the hard drive but not the programs you are running so that it will boot very quickly. And what do you think is faster: Copying 1GB from SSD to RAM or copying 2-8GB? It just depends on your needs. Maybe youre running many programs sorted in a special way on your monitors. Then the few seconds faster boot isnt worth it preparing everything again, instead of just hibernating.

prettylolitadoll my computer boots in 2 or 3 seconds (from bios to login screen). In order to wake up from hibernation in 2 seconds it needs to read 4Gb/sec from the SSD and the sata interface itself will limit it to 600Mb/seg.

So I have a SSD on my desktop computer running Windows 10. My power settings are: Display switches off in 1 minute; computer goes to sleep in 10 minutes; Hybrid sleep is on and Hibernate after 30 minutes. I am still uncertain about having both Hybrid Sleep and Hibernate ON and shutting down the computer at a specified time. I am actually going mad trying to figure this out!

Here is an update to the changes I made let me see if I get any response on this one:
I have a SSD on which my Windows 10 PRO OS is installed. Here are my power and sleep settings; I would like to know from you if what settings I have chosen make sense?
Display turns of in 1 minute of PC being locked/ idle
Computer goes to sleep in 15 minutes
      Computer Hybernates in 30 minutes
      Power Plan Settings:
With the above settings remaining the same the only change here is; hard disk turns off after 20 minutes
This is a DeskTop; TaskScheduler has the action to shutdown the PC at 12AM everyday

+michael mckinlay Programs use RAM space to store temporary data. A good programmer will remove his data and free up the space the instance the temporary data isn't useful anymore. Memory leaks occur when a programmer fails to free up and "release" the space.

Lately, whenever I decide to hibernate for the night, my computer will boot up successfully but be very unresponsive for until an hour, with even opening up a web browser taking up the first 30 mins. I had to wait around 1 hr before I can use my computer at the original speeds. Last time, the difference between sleep and hibernate is too miniscule to even notice. Now, I even had to resort to sleep mode during the night now instead to prevent performance loss on startup.
I don't know if this is a coincidence or not, but in the week leading up to it, I had to hibernate with a chrome browser and 2 word documents open due a project. On the last day of the project, the unresponsiveness began and hanged all programs from my clicking so I had to restart my pc. Fortunately, I saved everything the night before. Even after restarting, it still takes an hour before the speed is back to normal after booting up. Did this issue start because I kept hibernating with programs on for over a week?

I use my PC (desktop) for the longest period time in the morning, which is when I write my tales, research, or shop.I step away from my PC for 2 to 3 hours intervals, so when I step away from it during the day, I simply put it to sleep for those few hours. Then I come back to it and check things -- Facebook etc. Then when I step away again I put it in sleep mode. But at night, when I go to bed, I turn it off for those 6 to 8 hours. Then it's rinse & repeat starting in the morning. 1. Use, sleep @ day breaks. 2. Bed time, off.

Two parts are subject to failure: the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply, bearings in fans, and dirt accumulation on heatsinks. Unplugging the computer saves the electrolytics. Going into any form of hybernation/sleep saves heatsinks/fans. There is also another part most likely to fail, one of the myriad connections between parts, solder or mechanical. That is largely driven by age, temperature, dust, and humidity (and presence of corrosive chemicals).
Heatsinks can be cleaned with a blast of air (for desktops).
