Excellent demo. Your 15 minutes structured path to "Practice makes Progress" right from spider, to chord changes using metronome exercises is a proper measure of progress. This is organising efficiently toward meaningful success. Thank you Lauren, you are a great motivator.
After having my guitar sitting in the house for two or three years I can honestly say I am now learning with your videos. Playing guitar is a goal I can now feel I can reach. Thank you Ms Bateman. Hopefully, when I learn more I’ll buy a guitar like yours so please provide me the model. That will be my second goal.
Thanks for watching! Guitar model is Taylor 324CE Builder's Edition. Here is the link for guitar recommendation: kit.co/laurenbateman/guitar-recommendations
Lozza, what a great lesson. I wish I’d found you when I 1st bought my guitar! I’m 3 years in and still consider myself a beginner,.. but you are such a great teacher, I love the songs you do and can manage them but these lessons are still so valuable! Thank you. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Excellent lesson! I am one of THOSE who plays about an hour every day but I play the same 12 songs over and over again. This lesson reinforced what I need to do to get better.
Excellent practice structure advice, and 15 minutes doesn’t take too much out of my busy schedule. I’ve been trying to learn for almost 4 years but have trouble fitting time into my days for practice.
Learning guitar through Guitars 4 vets at my local veteran center and my teaxher says "practice makes permanent " focusing on practice it the right way as how we practice becomes the habit. Im loving your videos to really help supplement the 2 hr lesson we get once a week at the vet center
Very interesting making the point regarding relaxing the left hand Lauren. I once heard Mark Knopfler say his biggest piece of advice was relaxing the left hand. I'm 3 and a half years in and this is something I really struggle with. My hands are small and my index and pinkie curve inwards, so if I'm doing that exercise at the 5th fret, if I relax by the time I put my 3rd finger down my index finger has slid into the 6th fret so not getting the stretch. There is no chance I can spread 3 fingers across 3 frets in the first position. I can only just reach a full C chord and wouldn't be able to use it in a song. So left hand relaxation is a real issue for me
Thank you so much for these videos! I’m 45 and I am trying to learn to play but have tendon issues that cause pain when I grip with my left hand. Your videos and teaching style have helped me greatly!
I learned guitar for two years but quit three years ago. Back then, I used to practice around 100 hours a month. I remember spending one entire day practicing SRV's "Scuttle Buttin'"-I worked on just the first two bars for 9 hours, but I couldn't get beyond 40% speed. That experience frustrated me so much that I stopped playing guitar altogether. Recently, I've been focusing on piano, practicing 6-8 hours a day, and I'm always getting positive feedback from my progress. Now, I’ve decided to pick up the guitar again, but with a different approach-just 15 minutes of practice a day.
Thank you for what you do Laura. So I've practiced for 60 days straight, average about 2 hours a day. All I've practiced is the spider exercise up and down the fretboard. Not sliding up and down and playing, but planting my 4 fingers in an area and going up and down there. Thats all I've done for 60 days. I'm up to 156 BPM. My fingers are getting there, definitely not perfect and theirs a lot of work to be done, so I'll continue on doing that, forever I guess... What would you recommend I introduce into my practicing? I'm learning with a Taylor 214ce. Edit: I have practiced the A minor Pentatonic Scale (thank you) and the G major Scale pattern 1. Also wondering what I'm suppose to do with the new features I have on the tips of my fingers. The deep V's and what not...is that normal?
I purchased a copy of Guitar Pro and it has some excellent features that will be handy for your practice. A built-in Metronome and a list of all the scales and modes to practice. What I also like is the fret display that allows you to write music with sound and learn all the notes and placement. It has many features and the version 8 is approximately $60: depending on your ability to find discounts. Well worth the investment to me.
You are an amazing teacher, thank you so much! I do have a question, why not to learn straight away playing all that is on the open tuning without the second finger, as later on, if moved anywhere same chords gonna be played while second finger is going to do a bar?
@@LaurenBateman Thank you Lauren! I am having a bunch of fun. Mandolin is my main ax. Coming up on two years studying/playing. I then realized that there's not a whole lot of mandolin players I revere who don't play guitar. I thought there might be a reason for that and a lesson to learn, so here I am. Looking forward to seeing your other videos. 👍😎 Just Play!
Great video! Question: If you're also practicing scales, would you still recommend doing the 5-minute spider exercises, or do you think its okay to break up that part or dedicate it just to scales?
I'm using this video daily-- including a minute of literally warming my hands and fingers and stretching them before I start. Three fingers ARE getting better. That pinky though...? She's a rebel. I read somewhere a guy said, "Oh, ya wanna learn guitar? Let's get this part out of the way first then, and you read this back at your leisure: your hands and fingers ARE big enough, and you're never too old to learn anything you feel passionate about." But that pinky though? LOL... We're naming her "Bonaparte"! She's feisty and uncooperative as hell. 😊
Love your videos and these tips. Thank you. I downloaded a metronome app because of your suggestion in another video. I will take your course when I have the money. Not right now, unfortunately. Can't wait!
Hey Lauren any tips for someone who hasn't touch or practiced on his guitars and can't Seem to go back to it(I'm not a beginner nor Am I Eddie Van Halen)I just can' t motivate myself and I love Music and my guitars.Any thought?-old geezer asking...

For the spider exercise, is one of the goals to keep each finger down on the chords as you play through it or is it ok to raise the other fingers up as you play each chord? I ask because I have small fingers and sometimes it is harder for me to keep my ring finger and pinky down.
So, it would okay if I keep practicing at a slower speed until I'm comfortable and start naturally playing faster? I would try to force myself to at least try to play faster whenever I thought I was starting to get better. I think I kept burning myself out doing that.
It's annoying when i try guitar practices but many times my practices were failed it's so annoying you practice hard but still can't play guitar good but i try again practice again it's really annoying Can you tell me what should i do now? Anyways Thanks for the tips
It's totally normal to feel frustrated when learning a new skill like playing the guitar. Progress can sometimes be slow, and it's easy to get discouraged when things don't go as planned. Keep practicing, and don't be too hard on yourself. Improvement takes time, but with persistence, you'll get there!
Anders Ericsson, leading researching in the study of success, calls this specific practice ‘deliberate practice’ - he claims it is the secret which separates the world class and the very good
Every golfer I know should watch this. Build form, then sequence and do it slow enough so you can he it solid. Then increase speed, until form and sequence breaks down, then stop and slow it down so you can hit it solid again. If you can’t get it right go hit putts, don’t practice badly.
