I got in touch with music instruments when l was younger because of my brother who use too playing me guitar to get me to sleep.years later l came to know couple of fingers riffs that l play with french song melody but l didn't know to read notes or writings solfège.growing up l bought guitars and still didn't learn more just picking up once in while.and suddenly out of nowhere that l am much older we feel little younger retired and hearing some nostalgia from 60 70.came back l bought an other guitar and books again and l pay more attention than l used to be.and watching videos l think I m exactly doing what you're showing in this video and am glad to find some experienced person to get some lessons from. l 'll keep watching thank you a lot teacher .
You're very welcome! Glad to help.
I never realized until now how much a metronome helps with this, thanks Lauren
Amen!
Bought my guitar a week ago. I pretty much been doing what you've said, before seeing your video. Starting practicing Em & Am. 4 of each in a row, to practice getting faster changes. Going to A wasn't always clean. So thank you, neeeded to hear that's ok. Yes, I'm one of the older learners, so I'll be doing the finger exercises.
Great tutorial & drill tips Lauren
As a young 72 year old beginner improver

Really friendly, really clear and accessible, and so helpful to demo what the exercise is likely to look like when we try it! Thank you 👍👍
You're very welcome! I'm glad I could help :D
Good exercise. Thanks, Lauren...
You're so welcome!
Lauren, this is excellent instruction. Particularly helpful for me is the emphasis you put on using a metronome to push myself outside my comfort zone and giving me “permission “ to have sloppy sounding chords while I’m working on speed exercises. Thank you for this really great channel.
You are welcome!
Wow! Thank you Lauren. That seems really doable for a beginner like me! You are definitely a great teacher. Keep up the good work! 🙂
Awww thank you! Will do!
Very helpful, thanks!
You're welcome!
Thank you Batman
Great tips to get these old arthritic fingers moving faster! Your pentatonic scale exercises have helped me too!

Great class...Thanks,👊
You're so welcome!!!!!
Thank you Lauren!
Thank you for watching! Yes, that is a common issue. Please watching ua-cam.com/video/Lsd48Lu-fJs/v-deo.html
Best teacher for beginners on UA-cam, believe me, I have spent my life teaching and know a few things about how people learn.
Keep it simple and do a little often, constant repetition is the key.
Wow, thank you! 😊😊😊
This has helped my speed .Great lesson Lauren 😊
Glad it was helpful!
great tutorial! 🎶💛
You're welcome!
The advice in this video is priceless and should be obligatory for all beginners!
I started learning guitar in my mid 60s and did the spider exercises and 1 minute chord changes but would have much preferred the 3 finger spiders as I found it a huge stretch to get my pinky down hard enough to play a clear note, hence it took ages to work up to the top fret! Will be trying the 3 finger spider tomorrow though as older joints need good warm up exercises! Thanks for a great video, Bob.
Thank you! Glad it was helpful!
Lauren - very helpful exercises. I will add these to my warmup routine and will practice the muscle memory exercise while watching tv at night.
Awesome Todd!
OMG I love this, thanks!!!
Glad you like it!
Hey Lauren, I just found your channel today and binge watched quite a few of your lessons, very entertaining, fun and informative, great job, you earned my sub. I'm now 67 and just bought myself a guitar again, I tried learning many years ago but quickly gave up. Of all the lessons out there on youtube, I've found yours to be the channel I'm most comfortable with, looking forward to my journey with you.
Welcome to the channel!!! So happy to help and glad that you find my lessons valuable and informative. 😊
@@LaurenBateman I actually play drums, so that helps with keeping time and counting.
You are just amazing. Best guitar teacher. ❤
Thank you so much 😀
Thanks Lauren, the encouragement I needed….
Glad to hear!
Thank you, Lauren. Craig
You’re welcome Craig.
Thank you again
Always welcome :D
Great video! This definitely something I need. Esp transitioning from open to bar chords. And and a side note major kudos for being a fellow Pixel folk and having the sweet 69 Camaro model in the background!
Thanks. I love Camaros. I have a 1968 RS and a 2022 ZL1.
I truly love love the way you teach I seen your video the other day day and feel in love with your teaching methods you have taught this old guy some knowledge that I didn't know , you have already have helped me immensely you are a truly a sweetheart thank you .GREST VIDEO GREAT TEACHING.
Thanks for watching!
This video I feel is going to get me out of the rut I've been regards to progressing. The finger pushups and emphasis on muscle memory is helping immensely in getting faster chord changes. I can tell the difference within two days practicing. Thank you Lauren!
You are so welcome. Sometimes it’s the small things that make the biggest difference.
Me too absolute beginner your video is so motivating thank you!
Welcome!
Excellent lesson thank you very much 🙏🙏🏻🙏🏽🙏🏻
You're welcome very much!!
Thank you again for your help 🏴🙏
You're welcome. My pleasure.
Very easy and effective exercises tq madam
Welcome 😊
I will start by doing the push ups tho to master the chords grab and will do the dexterity exercise with the first 3 frets from now on
Hey ! I love these. I did lessons for a year and half and pretty much all we did was learn songs by tab. Life got in the way and became a dreaded dabbler... Great guy and I would go back but these basics are essential in building new neural pathways. Guitar can be for therapeutic for anything I believe. Thanks for a great lesson.
Brad, you're so welcome. Sometimes focusing on the basics is what you need.
Thanks Lauren. I've been watching a lot of guitar videos lately, and just did one of yours. I give you credit for not being intimidating, and no weird distracting hair, jewelry or tattoos. Good lesson, too!
Hi Mary, that's very kind of you. I am a big fan of being myself. 😊 So happy you found the video helpful. Keep up the good work practicing.
You are so good at explaining
Thank you!
This is one of the greats among the greatest😊
😊
Thanks for watching!
Good job !
Thanks!
Thanks Lauren I needed this. Changing chords has certainly been my biggest problem so far. That and hitting the wrong strings doh.
It's most student's problem in the beginning. You are not alone!
Thanks Laur 🙏
You are welcome!
Started learning just 2 years ago and can play a few songs through but Dm to Am is the hardest change for me so these are the two chords I’m working on. 3 days of this and I can already able to change faster. I can’t wait to see how much I improve after a month! Plus the spider exercise is so fun that any free moment I have I’m goofing around with it! I had no warmup routine before, but see such value in this. Thank you, Lauren.
You got this!
Thanks Lauren, I started with you a year ago and had no arthritis issues. I thought to myself how lucky I was. Well all that has changed for me now, it has mysteriously appeared in both hands now…all that to thanks for the refresher-using the metronome, finger push-ups and spider exercises.
You're welcome Jim!
Thank you I will practice 😉
Keep it up
Best teacher....
Aww thanks
A super video for someone like me who is a rank beginner. Thanks so much
Glad to help Darryl.
Thanks Lauren, struggling with chord changes. I’m in that’grey’ group!
You got this!
Scarey good lesson.
Hey thanks!
Thank you so much your video has helped me more than i thought I was flooded with alot of videos on youtube until God got me here and In one day I have seen a rocket improvement. I have never commented on any youtube video in my life to give a review this is really amazing. Thanks the trick of 2 fingers first on each code was so helping that i was able to add the rest of the fingers automatically. I can now continue learning because at first I was demoralized with alot of videos that are not helping me at all.
Really great to hear that! I'm glad that it was helpful :D Keep on practicing and I know that you will get it :)
Absolute. Everyone should stretch before any activity.
I found that I had to slow down to get faster. Then get faster until it gets twisted. Reapply as needed
Yep, a good mixture of slow and fast.
Loved the Bruce Lee quote. These tips are really really helpful.
One of my favorite quotes. :)
I can't believe I reached 80 bps with most of the chords transitions (G, Em, D, C) 2 months after watching this video and joining your 7 level course. I keep on being grateful I have found your name and course on Google after so many other courses I joined with no success
That's awesome! I'm really glad the lessons were helpful. Thanks so much for your support :D
Really good lesson for beginners ❤️👍
Glad to hear that!
@@LaurenBateman iam still learning your lessons from Sri Lanka
Very helpful lesson and tips Lauren. I just turned 66 but have multiple sclerosis and numbness in my left and right hand. This repetitive drill/lesson is helping me make progress 👍🎶💯
Glad it was helpful! :D Keep it up
Unlike the piano having extra large hands with long fingers is not a blessing trying to play the guitar. Plenty of thuds for me so I need all the help I can get. Especially being in my 60's as a complete beginner. Lort help me! LOL!
That's an absolutely beautiful guitar
Thanks for watching!
I'm currently working on a chord melody arrangement of Stardust (from a book) and I think these suggestions will help. Thanks.
Awesome!!!
I found that I can also use the pivot point (2nd) finger to make the A major, just move the 1st finger to the G string and drop the 3rd finger on the B. all three in the 2nd fret. You can make the E minor, C , G and A during chord change practice.
Rock on!
Very good exercise Lauren. Good is also the search for "Guide Notes". These are Notes on the same string but different fret. For example for a change of the chords E to D, you just slide with your index finger from the first fret to first to the third fret without lifting the index finger . The other fingers will then follow to form a D chord. Cheers Stephan
Thanks for the info!
Building a play list, of how to build your guitar techniques. I will use other instructors as well, so far this one is leading the pack. Now it is all about basics, easiest best methods I have found. Thus far I will keep adding there are a lot of greats, However in ease, basics none better than Ms.Bateman
That's awesome :D And thank you so much! I'mreally glad you found my videos helpful.
Just started at age 44. You gave me perfect tools to start! Thank you!
Rock on!
Good job
Thanks
@Lauren Bateman when playing a song and your making a chord change should you raise or take all your fingers off the the guitar strings if you don't have to?
Good morning, Lauren, I really appreciate and enjoy your teaching methods, which are really easy to follow. I am a senior citizen and I am interested in joining the " Fellowship of Strings" but I am living on a fixed income. I would love to be part of it , but cannot do it until beginning of May
No rush, The community will be there when you are ready.
This Uncle Phil shaved ice thank you for your tutorials it's working for me great I would like to see you play AC/DC back in Black on your electric guitar thanks😊
Thanks for watching!
The best
Thanks!
M fm india. Your vidio is so useful. Thank u mam.
Thanks and welcome
Very underrated teacher
Thank you! 😃
Excellent session as always Lauren.
Question....do you actually use the metronome your self when you are practicing?
I do!!
I'm kind of addicted to watching these kind of videos. Even if I'm comfortable with the task it's good to hear another perspective. Do you have any ideas to reduce string noise as you are moving up and down the braided strings?
The round wounds. That's a common issue with those. Really no way around it. Mine make noise too. Especially when skin starts coming off the calluses.
51 year old “older learner” here; you’re awesome Lauren, thanks for being there for Us! 💜💜
You are so welcome! Glad I could help :D
@@LaurenBateman - I found your music on Apple Music. Wow! You’re incredibly talented. (The fact you’re from Boston as well makes me a little biased. 😜)
HELL YEAH!!!!
Bam!
Bam Squared!
Really like the finger pushup concept. Also, the Bruce Lee reference.
I grew up with martial arts so it has a place in my heart. Love Bruce Lee.
@@LaurenBateman Me too.
Think I mentioned this before when you spoke about the Em chord in another video. I play it 2nd and 3rd but I can see your point in playing 1st and 2nd as you can move to the G chord easier, as you demonstrated. Even though I play Em with 2nd and 3rd fingers, I can also play with 1st and 2nd fingers so I've been trying it out. At the moment I'm not playing a full G only a G6 two finger chord when I move from Em to G. However I still feel like I'm getting somewhere (slowly I have to admit) and it's definitely down to you not pushing to do a full G or C or any other difficult chords.
Yeah, there's usually more than one way to play certain chords. Have to find what works best for you and your hand
@@LaurenBateman 👍👍
