      I appreciate that, thank you! Up until now I really didn't sign my work because I just never felt my art properly reflected my truest expression. I am finally arriving at a place where I'm proud of my work!

    There’s something about how you smudge out and make changes in the line stage that almost builds up the feeling of an underpainting, and that makes me so excited to embrace corrections in my own paintings. Like I could just smudge it out AND get beautiful depth too!

    • @ArtChante
      @ArtChante  7 місяців тому

      Thats a great observation! It seems to happen by chance sometimes, but I've done paintings in the past where I actually intentionally wiped away and smudged paint on purpose in the underpainting stage! So you're onto something, definitely continue to just roll with those unexpected moments in the underpainting!

    I think going forward with painting the folks in your life is a great idea and probably that next level you are looking for. Keep up the good work.

      Exactly! An element of my practice seemed to be missing and taking it to that next level with painting people I actually interact with will add that element of collaboration and story telling to my work!

    Nice to meet you Chante! So glad that I found your channel, it's the perfect mix of art technique + life + NYC (hoping that you'll be able to share more inspiration pics and art galleries). Wondering if you've listened to jazz artist Chief Adjuah (recently reviewed in the NYTimes)?

    Nice painting, interesting process, and nice vlog. I would have liked to see the phase where you added the stripes to the shirt. ...so about your hat, is there a backstory to why the name "Malibu" is printed upside down?

    • @ArtChante
      @ArtChante  8 місяців тому +1

      You know I actually do have the recording of adding the stripes on the shirt. I’m happy you’re interested in that part of the painting, maybe I can create a UA-cam short of that detail. Since I didn’t put it in the video
      As far as the hat! I picked it up at a surf shop in Los Angeles when I went surfing for the first time. The design caught my eye and it was a bit of a memento for surfing my first day!

    • @ArtChante

      Doug! We are on the same page! Alice Neel is definitely a source of inspiration for me. As I develop my own personal style I still use her as a reference point

    Are you just using pure color from the tube when you apply that first layer? I find that my first layer is way too "watered " down with solvent, it's a habit I have a hard time breaking. Also starting with the forehead is so true! 😂 I was also clued into using stiff bristle brushes pretty late into my art journey (6 years into it) actually at an art class. Such a time saver, truely.

    • @ArtChante
      @ArtChante  8 місяців тому +1

      Doesn't it make such a big difference using the right brush, who would've guessed haha ;)
      But as far as using solvent, I use very little when I paint. It depends on how workable the paint is straight out of the tube, but for the most part I use the smallest amount. I usually dip my brush in the solvent and then blot most of it off on my rag! It helps the paint be more fluid, but like you mentioned too much can make it watered down for sure.

    love the colour key idea✨ do you mix the main colour with the next colour on the list in equal proportions ?

    • @ArtChante
      @ArtChante  8 місяців тому

      So I use the main color in a greater quantity when I mix the two together. This is just how I chose to go about it but you can certainly do equal parts this may give you slightly different results but thats the beauty in color mixing... the combinations are endless!
