So glad this still gets taught. Great to see people actually drawing and painting from life. Here in the UK we have a contest on TV called, "Portrait Artist of The Year", which, don't get me wrong, there are some great paintings produced, but most of the time, the painters/competitors, take a photo of the famous sitter (whomever it may be, some actor or celeb') and then spend all their time copying the photo from their Apple ipads. The sitter sits there for 4 hours while a semicircle of people sit looking at their ipads behind their easels. Only once did I see one of the finalists have to sit and paint studies from life (this one was a commission to paint a famous opera singer. The oil studies she produced were barely recognisable. When the opera singer saw the life studies you could see she was visibly shocked, disappointed. On seeing the finished portrait the opera singer said she hoped the finished painting would be better than the studies! The finished portrait was done, you guessed it, from an ipad/photo) The sitter may as well just turn up, let them all take a couple of photos each, then leave. It is certainly not how I did life-drawing classes! Times change, eh? Art colleges and academies in the UK teach very little of the "traditional" art skills such as are seen in this video, everything is contemporary, conceptual and/or digital etc, which I agree with that being taught, as I do like contemporary art but, not at the expense of losing these ways of working. Figurative artists/students have the hardest time in art colleges in the UK, simply because there are so few tutors who understand or are proficient in these time honoured ways of working. I wish this video was longer. Cheers for posting. x
I always find it funny when people whine about stuff like this. Steve Huston works from photos and he's a genius and very much a traditional painter. Sargent used photos. And the idea that the old masters WOULDN'T use photos is madness. "consistent lighting and I don't have to pay models for the next two months!?" would probably be their reaction. A happy medium is fantastic of course, I'll always prefer working from a live model but I'm not made of money. Most traditional artists these days don't make anywhere near a living salary from it so how are they supposed to pay 50 bucks an hour for a private model? In college yeah of course we only had actual models (like here) but that's because I wasn't paying for it, I was living off 10cent noodles from Tesco, so yeah.... outside of college I worked from photos (like all of these artists do outside of college) And it's not a lack of tutors, it's a lack of interest. In this day and age, traditional style art colleges are seen as bad investments, that's it really
@@ferretart I don't think people should never use photos, as you said, there are huge advantages. But ultimately I think any well-rounded artist should be able to work from life as proficiently as they would from a photo.
Life drawing classes are compulsory in any art school worth its salt, no matter the specialization. Practicing from photos is adviced for artists who don't have the means to hire models, but I agree that using them as shorthands for finished works will tremendously stump the learning process.

Gosh I love this video. It was fascinating. You've done something great in making it - I'm confident it will inspire plenty of people now and in future. Of course what we really need to do is to ensure that artists and the creative can live a decent life after university. Once we get past existential problems of survival (and barbaric warfare) maybe it will be a golden age for artists. Let's hope this day comes quickly!
I love these old artschools where the architecture is beautiful and its so atmospheric must be beautiful to work in, I hate all the modern art schools where its just sleek blank walls of a boring old building. Ur school is like the dream.
Great art is made by those who study art. The appreciation and emulation of work from the past is what imbues any piece with it's treasure. Viewing art is like treasure hunting. Beach combing for gems.

Thank you for showing the chapel inside also - I love religious icons and notice there are lots on the academy walls in classrooms etc. Some say in art history that the very "grand" style of russian painting from the late 1800's was very influenced by iconography of saints etc. Either way, I love watching these day-to-day experiences inside the academy and wonder what it would have been like for students all throughout its history.
Hi Ksenia, I hope you'll go on with your vlog for foreseeable future. There is narrative with some people that the Old m asters were using various optical devices, camera Lucida, obscura, etc, how otherwise they could be so good? Yes, this sort of ignorance does exist. David Hockney even wrote a book "proving "that the Old Masters used certain devices, etc. However, your vlogs show that Academy students don't use cany devices or computers to achieve good results. Incidentally, a few years ago Hockney had an exhibition at the Royal Academy in London. In terms of colour it was like Disneyland in London. Probably old age decline. (There is no Disneyland I Britain, you have to go France).
I love that no matter how old, classical, or important an art school is, it always has missing floor tiles, holes in walls and ancient bowls used for mixing chemicals XD I have a question: are all your painting/drawing classes about realistic figure/scene portrayal? Based on the fragments you show all students have a similar composition, style and subject. Also most of the older artworks shown on the exhibition look like they were made by the same artist (I'm aware they weren't). Do you have any "freestyle" classes?
Thank you for showing the canvas preparation process! But why do you use an acrylic primer when painting in oils, instead of an oil-based or water-soluble primer? Solely to save time for the drying process? Thank you for sharing with us 💞
Having had a brief brush with 'art education' in the UK back in the 1970s, and immediately rejecting it as rubbish, I can't tell you how interesting this is. Had there been anything like this available, who knows what level I would be at today!

Is the gelatine completely cold when you apply it? I am wondering how you get this jelly texture, when I let my gelatine glue cool down it becomes too solid to apply in such a fashion - maybe just add more water?
No, its not completely cold, thats why it has this soft texture, but i personally use cold gelatin for the last layer of gluing, I apply it with my palm and the heat melts it
Est-il difficile d'obtenir un visa pour pouvoir espérer accéder à cette incroyable école !!! Je suis français et j'apprends le russe. Merci pour votre réponse
The academy provides visas to foreign students, as far as I know it’s not difficult) by the way, we have at least 2 students from France here!) I wish you good luck!
gosh it must to so hard to translate lectures for the foreign students? to pay so much money to attend such a prestigious school and only understand like 60% of what the teacher is saying in class is insane. loved the video though
thank you❤️ on the one hand yes, but lectures are held for the entire course, the majority of students here are Russian-speaking) when you come to another country, it is in your interests to learn the language in order to survive there)
меня всё это просто завораживает!! но я опасаюсь что не смогу зарабатывать если буду учиться живописи.. если можете, пожалуйста поделитесь какие есть возможности с таким образованием?

Great, but isn't the emphasis on conformity sometimes a little stifling?
If you are a conformist by nature, yes, you will conform. It boils down to who you are.
gosh it must to so hard to translate lectures for the foreign students? to pay so much money to attend such a prestigious school and only understand like 60% of what the teacher is saying in class is insane. loved the video though
thank you❤️ on the one hand yes, but lectures are held for the entire course, the majority of students here are Russian-speaking) when you come to another country, it is in your interests to learn the language in order to survive there)
More please
Can u pls share your art portfolio?
Im wondering what you will do in future studying with such an ancient academic approach 😁 ‘Best academy’ they said

Yes, it's the blogger's opinion. It is subjective
