damn, I wish someone would think about making a replica of the polichorus which is difficult to find and too expensive rather than a replica of the small clone which is still available today
Another option is the Dandy Horse by Lectric FX. It’s a DIY build but there’s a few people in the community who will build you one, @baskah_official is my recommendation
If I didn't already have a Small Clone, I'd seriously be looking into this. The decade switch plus the extra control over depth and mix settings make this look really interesting.
Hey! Nice review. I love PastFX and the work they do, would love to get my hands on one of these myself. As someone who has poured many hours into research on EHX and their circuits, here’s what I can say: EHX used both the Reticon and Panasonic chips in the original 70s/80s Small Clones indiscriminately, likely ordered based on who had the best price back in the day. So much so that certain units have a circuit board that accepts either chip, although the SAD version is considerably more rare. The difference between the SAD and MN versions is very small and almost negligible IMO. I don’t have a link but there’s a great comparison video showing the two and honestly it’s really impossible to tell the difference. The sound of a circuit is really the sum of its parts rather than individual components themselves. To set this one up like Kurt’s here’s what I’d do: Stick with 70s mode - to my ear this is the closest in sound to the original small clones with the slightly more flange like sound. Engage the low cut - I’m sure you know this but the original Small Clones have a huge bass cut when engaged Keep the mix around 50/50 - this is how most original EHX pedals were setup For 91’ / 92 shows I’d keep the rate pretty much max and depth in position 8, for the later shows in 93’ and 94’ same depth but reduce the rate to around 3 o’clock Thanks for the review, might pick one up if I can find a good deal!
Another channel I follow has done a bunch of PastFX demos for pedals that sound like David Gilmour and I've been blown away at how good those ones sound so to see another channel take a look at one is also great, not surprised it also sounds killer and definitely reminiscent of a Small Clone but I do love that name though. That's great
It does sound spot on, but there's noticeably less low end when played clean. With distortion I hear no difference. This definitely is worth it though.
Trivial detail: Small Clone pedals weren't manufactured in the 1990s. I remember because I was trying desperately to find one around 1999 and only expensive originals were around on eBay. By the early 2000s there was enough demand for EHX to reissue them.
does the rate nill ? ( when you turn the rate knob all the way down does the unit STOP oscillating the lfo or is it still moving when you turn it all the way down - either way it sounds phenomenal - i owned a sad1024 small clone till it was fried by an ac/ac power supply .
It sounded 1:1. It even emulates the heart shaped box solo? That is so cool! Also sorry for this unrelated question but do you still have the original neck that krist signed?
@@NirvanaGuitars Yeah it sure is. i still cant believe that it sounded like the heart shaped box solo. i just closed my eyes and didnt even notice that the pedals changed. You are amazing Eric!

Wait thats actually sick, ive been wanting a small clone for a while, but i can never decide which era to go for, do you know about how much these will cost?
As always, a great video! It seems to me that the reticon chip has a more watery sound, like in the nevermind album, it creates a feeling of overlapping sound. By the way, for some reason they don't have this pedal on their website(
Great video! Although I still stand by the Small Clone being the right way to be truly Nirvana. Can you also please upload an updated tone creation for Live at the Paramount? 7:47 You somehow have Live and Loud uploaded but not that yet.
@@NirvanaGuitars thanks so much! As a 14 year old who hasn't even gotten an electric guitar yet but is scouting out for the perfect equipment, this pedal is literally what I was looking for. I didn't wanna get an actual Small Clone or Polychorus considering the prices, so this is perfect. And it's 3 decades of chorus in one pedal. What more could one need? (In my case, an actual guitar, but whatever).
I was sent the pedal but I was not paid. This and all my reviews are real. I have been sent things to review that I did not like so I sent it back without making any videos with them. I only review products I genuinely enjoy
@@NirvanaGuitars that is nice i really appreciate your content and see a pedal to good to be true make me think sorry for the misunderstanding. I don't see the price on the site, its known? for me $250 to $350 is a good price paying more seems like a bit of a robbery to me is a clone at the end
It's good but many of these reissues don't seem to capture the darkness and fullness of the originals. I swear it's not a placebo; I really do notice a difference.
Hard disagree. This offers infinitely more control than a small clone does. 1 rate knob & 1 depth switch vs 3 way circuit switch, 8 way depth rotary, mix control, level/gain control and rate
@@NirvanaGuitars Part of the charm of the og is working with the limited controls. It's a set and forget pedal. Having all those features might be cool in a recording context I'll give you that.

Is that what he told you? I wonder what he would turn his nose up for: a pedal or people who never met him going around thinking they know him well enough to say how he would feel about something

Hey Eric, can you please compare the OG Small clone and the Neo clone??
I honestly thought this was a prank vid and you were just reviewing a cologne/scent that Kurt wore at some point
I think its referring to how Kathleen Hanna told Kurt he smells like Teen Spirit and Kurt didn't realize she was talking about a girls deodorant.
Beatles has ably house and nirvana has nirvanaguitars! Both very great youtubers
