@@NirvanaGuitarshow do you do the solo during the studio version of drain you? I looked everywhere on UA-cam, and I never have found it, could you one day show how to do it?
That pedal was essential on the In Utero tour because even though it was only used for a couple of song it set the tone for the whole show - I’ll never forget that whirling dervish screeching sound of Radio Friendly Unit Shifter in Montreal 93. Killer show - Kurt knew what he was doing
LOVE hearing something besides Nirvana on the jagstang, granted we ALL are here and love Nirvana , I really enjoyed hearing your playing non Nirvana riffs 🤜🤛🤘🧐
What I'm surprised about the poly chorus/echo flanger is the sound it made on radio friendly unit shifter like what??? it sounds like a frickin distorted chorus type thing it's super crazy.
Nice video! The originals can actually be used in a pseudo stereo with the direct out. You should try it! Turn the blend switch off, run the effect out into one amp and the direct out into another and you’ll have a pretty convincing stereo sound. I can confirm also that both reissues sound identical. The perceived difference you’re hearing is probably due to the sweep of the smaller pots vs the larger ones on the 90s reissue. They both use an identical circuit, the XO just uses SM (Surface Mount) components to save space.
Very fitting on the release of your video on these pedals. I recently this week bought a Poly Chorus Analog (late 90's), just waiting for it to be delivered in my mailbox. I also have a Poly Flange Stereo (1979-80), that I took a bid on ebay this january. But it can't be used (I'm afraid to use it too), because the pedal has a grounding fault. I've been told to send it to perhaps Norway's only repairer of vintage instruments, Sakari Jäntti. He's like the life savior of vintage instruments. He have fixed instruments for bands like Queens of the Stone Age, The War on Drugs + norwegian artists like A-ha and DumDum Boys. I don't know what that's gonna cost me, so I'll just wait for now on. I will rather be using the Poly Chorus than the Flange, because the Flange is a bit more older, and rare! The Flange also have this direct power cable in it with a british power plug. I bought a travel adapter for use on an european power plug. I like your videos as always, very interesting facts to hear, and it's always nice to know a bit more about the gear and instruments used in the Nirvana period. I think it's just so sad that there isn't written so much about these pedals, and probably much about other things too! The gear is a part of the music history and deserves to be noticed! So I'm glad you take your research on this topic, keep it going and take care! - Greetings from Norway!
Bossa Nova on a Kurt's guitar and pedal? that's a oddly amazing choice for a pedal demo, when I see an offset guitar playing Samba or Bossa Nova it reminds me of the band "Los Hermanos"
Great video! Loving the vibrant guitar wall in the back now LOL, can't wait to see more on TOM! I've really been enjoying these pedalboard videos though, so much I haven't known
I really love the sound of these two pedals and I’ve really wanted one and thanks to you I might be getting a fender delay pedal with the modulation switch, great work on all of your videos keep it up!
I really like the history of the pedals. They are so entertaining. IMO, The echoflanger sounds a lot more better than the rest. Plus it has been a while since we have seen Proto
Thank you! I at first grabbed Skystang, that's my default guitar for anything In Utero tour related. But then I realized it had been a while since Proto had been featured!
Echoflanger matrix sort of had a vintage Tele twang feel to it,while the vintage poly chorus definitely had a haunting sound to. New poly sounded pretty similar, but doesn't quite feel right like the vintage models. Very interesting to see the massive difference between the echoflanger and the vintage poly, and how well the reissue was made!
These gear history videos are amazing!!! Where do you get all of your vintage/original gear? Is it the same shop or just wherever you can find them? Ik sometimes your sent them lech the echo flanger but what about your other gear
Been looking forward to this one, the Echoflanger/Polychorus is a genuinely versatile and beautiful sounding multi-fx unit, the way Kurt used it on In Utero will forever make it iconic to me. I think that he might have planned it on being featured way more on the record, considering he had it on the dumb demo and also the heart shaped box solo which both ended up being left out. The original echoflanger has a super distinct and characteristic tonal quality, the 90s reissue has a comparatively richer and deeper tone and I think they both fit that spacey and otherworldly chorus/flanger sound, but the 2000s reissue really doesn't do it justice at all, it feels way too thin and bright, it's missing a lot of character for those tones.
So far in my little kurt Esq setup I have a boss ds1, a pretty lame chorus pedal, and a fender mustang. These videos are great to see what does what. 👍🏻
I have one from the late 70s that has super low output unfortunately. My local guitar store couldn’t fix it. I also have a reissue that works great but, if only I could get the vintage one fixed!!!
I have new idea for an "alternative" poly chorus. The pedal i am talking about is deluxe memory boy/man. Its a big box like polychorus i would be honored if you would try it😅. Thanks, btw your content is amazing . (Sorry for grammar i am czech)
I wonder how the clone echoflangers out there stand up against the original echoflanger... And likewise if a clone of the 80s polychorus would stand against the original. I don't see original polys often and even the 90s reissue are all over $500 used.
The echoflanger was literally the entire album actually. It was used in every song but there were so much stuff going on tone wise that is a little harder to hear
it was not the entire album. That theory was initially shared by Aaron and then he went on to debunk it himself in later videos. On the final studio version of In Utero, it’s only on Scentless and RFUS
@@_gamerlama5382It was however used a lot on the demos which is where Kurt’s quote comes from I believe. The demos of Dumb, Tourette’s, Gallons Of Rubbing Alcohol are notable examples. He uses it on the Scentless Apprentice demo also but with different settings. Curiously he doesn’t use it on the RFUS demo. Not sure why it was omitted or added to certain songs on the final album but it was likely based upon Kurt messing with it and seeing what sounded good in the studio.
Before I become a Nirvana fan I only had one song of Nirvana and that was Teen Spirit, so I went out in the 90s and bought the cassette and that was bleach, and then after never mind and in utero, anyway I listened to them all and I couldn't find one bad song on any album, imagine 3 albums and every song is a smash hit, yeah that just doesn't happen now days even with the biggest of stars, they might have one good song and the rest are just fillers but you never got that with Nirvana
I found 3 different sources that said he designed it, but since putting out this video multiple people have been telling me he did not design it. So I'm not even sure anymore at this point haha

Hey Eric! I've got a tone video suggestion! You should do the In Utero Tour tone with the Courtney Telecaster. Loved the video 👍🏻

Changing the look of the Poly-Chorus is like making a yellow "Kurt Cobain signature" Competition Mustang (Which Fender did, but you get the gist).
