The SUPERIOR Doctor Strange Is ANIMATED?

- Lionsgate's Marvel Animated movies included one about Doctor Strange! Releasing 9 years before his debut on the big screen, this film unsurprisingly has a scary amount in common with its MCU counterpart... but also, in some ways this animated film is better than the live action Marvel Cinematic Universe one. Let's find out why!

Miss when marvel use to make animated movies like this. Remember Hulk vs Wolverine/Thor,
Good times 🔥🔥
That and planet hulk are the best lionsgate animated movies
Also when they used to make good movie
hulk vs. was the shit, they didn't make animation like that anymore
I remember Deadpool was there. 😂
It's crazy how they managed to make Dormammu AND Mordo villains without feeling overblown and wasting none of them.
All it needs is just good writing, the MCU can do this too in the next Doctor Strange movie, all they have to do is hire good writer
I feel like "The SUPERIOR [Marvel Character] Is ANIMATED?" is a title template that could fit for most of Marvel's roster.
and DC's even more so
Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes is definitely a reason.
@@LincolnDWard they should have honestly just worked on rebooting the dcau, instead whatever the hell the dceu was trying to do
@@LincolnDWard DCMAU Batman>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ben Affleck
I definitely loved Will Weidel's performance of Terry McGinnis more than Batfleck and the actor that played Edward from Twilight@@ISAGAARBO98.
This movie was, in many ways, my introduction to the character, and while I'm not the biggest Dr. Strange fan, this movie is still one of my favourites. It was very sad, very epic, and contained some magical violence (that being, people being reduced to skeletons), and the costume is still one of my favorites.
So true!
Same here bro.. watched it when I was a kid.. loved it and I didn’t even know doctor strange before that
DOCTOR Strange interesting movie better than the MCU DOCTOR Strange movie.
Same here bro
@@Browntable Shuri couldn't save her brother, Dr. Strange couldn't save his sister
I wish they used the tragic backstory involving Strange's failed surgery on his sister in the MCU version. That would've added way more emotional depth for his "need to control" as well as an interesting dilemma to the question of if he could find happiness in DS 2. I like both iterations, but I hope MCU Strange continues to receive some development before Cumberbatch is done lol
For a second I read DS2 as Death Stranding 2 and got confused
I have to stop riding Kojima's dick
While it would have been an interesting backstory, doctors cannot do surgery on family members due to the intense pressure and possible results like that, I could see the directors of the MCU hesitant just because it is very unrealistic and since Dr. Strange is a well known doctor he and the world around him would know that rule.
@acexillustrates >unrealistic
its a magic based super hero movie realism goes out the window after 15 minutes
@@ThatOneGuy7550I really dislike that argument because if the magic scenario is still based in the world we live in, it still must follow some principles that keep the audience grounded as to how magic differentiates itself from the world we know.
@@ThatOneGuy7550 not really, realism isn't about conforming to the laws of our reality, but conforming to the laws of the reality of the world presented in a piece of fiction. Just because something is unrealistic for our modern lives, doesn't mean it can't be realistic for a fictional world.
I knew this masterpiece was better but I never hear anyone talk about this.
Lionsgate and Marvel have done an excellent job burying it. Fuckers
Yeah this video went HARD 😅
It’s so crazy how much is superior animated. The fact that people believe Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is superior to the mcu’s avengers proves that so much. If we’re being honest, most things are better animated than live action. Look at anime/other animated films.
EDIT: Obviously I’m not saying live action stuff isn’t good. Simply that in some ways, animation can be better. So many films/shows prove that animation deserves its flowers. That’s all.
Earth Mightest Heroes is far superior than the MCU. This is a fact.
Avengers EMH is the best marvel show ever and one of the best cartoons/shows ever
@@SuperSteph5 amen. Steve and bruce barely have any interactions in the mcu
Or both mediums can co-exist where animation and live-action are neither better or worse than each other 💀
I was with you until you mentioned anime. :P Most of the most popular anime is sooooo bloated, boring and cringe.
Doctor Strange is my favourite character, unfortunately I think the MCU’s portrayal of him has been underwhelming. I still like his movies, and Benedict Cumberbatch. I feel like the magic isn’t ‘weird’ enough, and he’s mainly used for plot devices.
I agree, I think theyre heading in a good direction magic-wise though, it seems to be getting weirder, and I liked his arc in MoM!
@@Browntable eh I sorta did but honestly I think he just repeats the same arc in the first one
"MCU's portrayal is underwhelming"
Y'know, it's funny cuz that about sums up my opinion on the MCU in general
Not that every single live action movie is bad, I just prefer when Marvel did quality animation (keyword: 'QUALITY')
@@nnmkj i feel you brother...and can never miss an oportunity to say Planet Hulk is freaking Masterpiece 🔥
@@Browntable He had an arc in MoM??
He was underwhelmingly underutilized. It would hv so cool if Strange himself figured out Wanda is behind this.
The animated movie is what made me a fan of Dr strange and it still better than what mcu gives
I wish Dr. Strange made an appearance on Avengers: Earth's mightiest heroes. We were so close to getting a fully realized marvel universe in animation.
S3 of avengers mightiest heroes was more related to magic. So we might have seen doctir strange in it.
@@saiarvindarun7856 Yeah, they were gonna have Magic and mutants. So Dr. Strange and the Xmen!
The closest we got was one of the Super Skrulls had Strange's cloak
That show is absolutely amazing I wish they would bring that back instead of Xmen
I was actually thinking about it lately - how well written the arrogant to humbled animated doctor strange was... The end for me was perfect as the ancient one gave his live to the winged marks and Dr.Strange faced Dormammu for the first time!
2:50 “Oh yeah Spider-Man is in this movie, You don’t believe me f**k you” best line in the whole video 🤣🤣🤣😭😭
I think both versions (MCU and Animated) are pretty cool, however, while I love Strange development in animated film, I think the MCU does a better job building his fight with Dormammu, with Strange in the end saving the day not by shooting laser on the villain, but by using his intelligence and using time stone. This helps to show why Strange is the sorcerer supreme: It's not because he's the most powerful or a choosen one, it's because of his creativity in the ways he uses his magic.
So like how he literally used eye to drain the magic out of dormanmu in way wong didn't think possible
@@davantebarbain3216 Yeah but that's very much a failure of the writing lesson "show, don't tell."
it's much more effective and well done from a storytelling/characterbuilding perspective to have him use his magic in a creative and easily understandable way that's also pretty ingenious to defeat the villain through practical methods with magic as a supplement, instead of defeating the villain through an entirely magical method that has no analogue to real life with our only indication that it's impressive being a character just saying "it isn't possible."
The fact that the brick wall sequence wasn't in the live action movie was such a bummer. It was such a powerful way to humble Strange and get him to open up to the whole process, and it would've made the live action one so much better.
It's lovely to see that SOMEONE else knows about this movie! I loved the animated version better too. He was deeper and it felt more true to the source material in all of the right ways.
I loved this version of Strange, my favorite part was the scene with the Wall and Ancient One explaining how magic works and Strange finally understanding it through metaphors and visuals, which made the fact that he eventually became so powerful more believeable.
Also the stuff with his sister made Strange more tragic and explained his cold behavior
Also can I just say I LOVE the Ancient One in this. You truly get the sense he's an intelligent, wise and compassionate master who deserves the title of Sorcerer Supreme. He helps Steven understand what magic is, shows immense patience with him and can tell he's a genuinely good man whose spent years hating himself for something he couldn't control. I genuinely wish we got more with him.
He is frankly a lot better as an ancient master of magic compared to Bald Tilda Swinton.
The animated Dr. Strange movie made me into a Dr. Strange fan as a kid and when the live action movie came out I had hoped they would take various story beats from the animated movie because it was fantastic especially Strange’s backstory with his sister. We only got a mention of her in MoM but the animated movie just made his arrogance and the need to be right way better. Still like the 2016 movie but it would have hit harder if they took elements from the animated movie
to me what the animated doctor strange movie got right with the ending with steven seeing Gina one last time and him saying she was right shows in the end Steven was going to be the hero the world needed but showing him finally coming to terms with the past and him showing he changed is a relatable and understandable moment showing sometimes we lose are way only to come to terms with things and try and move on
I love the backstory with his sister and what made him so arrogant that's one thing that better than kive action movie
Wow, something animated is superior to something live action??? Who could've guessed????? (It's me, I could've guessed)
Not in the case of Daredevil though. At least not Netflix's Daredevil
5:12 I think the most devastating thing about this is for the character it would feel like a foundation of professional failure as well as personal
I wasn't a superhero movie fan when this movie was released. I hadn't heard of Iron Man, let alone Doctor Strange. But it was on the TV and I decided to watch it anyway. And it's the reason I'm a lot more critical of MCU's 'Doctor Strange' than most.
MCU's Strange started as a somewhat Tony Stark clone and speedran his journey as a wizard. Strange only managed to acquire magic after Ancient One tricked him, abandoning him on top of a mountain so he's forced to use magic.
Except, his life was never really in danger as it keeps cutting to Mordo intending to rescue him. And from there, we get a montage of Strange advancing his magic by reading books. This is fatal, to me, because no matter how unique the bargaining scene with Dormmammu is, it didn't feel earned. Strange never feel like he was at the point of being able to take on Dormmammu and defeat him.
In the animated movie, Strange was to demolish a wall everyday. And I recall the wall starting out small before they get larger and larger. So when he acquired magic, it does feel earned because his trials had weight - figuratively and literally. It's almost like Robert de Niro in 'The Mission' when he carried that deadweight through the jungle. When the weight was cut loose of him at the end of his journey, he was a changed man.
I definitely feel like animated Doctor Strange really *became* a sorcerer while MCU’s Strange kinda stumbled through every action sequence through luck mostly. Two different executions and I like both, but I do prefer how animated Strange really spent a long time just honing his mind. Also animated Wong >> Stuck In Library Wong from the first movie.
It brings me such joy to know that the animated marvel movies are getting some love. Such a shame that Marvel themselves aren't making good animated movies.
They definitely should've kept doing these instead of mcu it would've been much better mcu is 50/50 when it comes to the movies, while these ones always were fire and badass
@Life is Berserk not all of them. Iron Man was DooDoo but the majority weren't bad.
@@TheInfamousWolf for me half are either great or pretty good the other half are ok or trash
@@lifeisberserk9566 Agreed, I just think they're idiots for not making their greatest stories into animated movies the way DC has done, like All star superman. It's the best film.
@@TheInfamousWolf for me Under the red hood and Flashpoint are definitely the best

Still one of my favorites in the Marvel Animated Features Collection. One thing I noticed is Doctor Strange's sister is a focal point in the movie, and when they reference her in Multiverse of Madness, I felt a sense of pride. Yeah, he has a sister. I knew that. Thanks to this movie.
I was actually thinking that the "What If" was extremely underwhelming because of how little it actually ties into anything that's going on.
Fun fact: some of the music from the Marvel animated movies (including this one) is used in Facebook's Avengers Alliance game. Primarily the first fight scene music in the movie that always plays when fighting bosses in the game. Just wanted to let you know and hit some people with nostalgia.
I loved that game
It’s like Green Lantern: First Flight being everything the live action one should’ve been
Also Jonathan Adams is the Voice of Dormammu and He's So Good with what screen time he has in this
He also voiced Kang in Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Galactus in MvC3, Atrocitus in Green Lantern TAS, and Vaatu in the Legend of Korra
Animated Dr Strange's eyebrows have more personality than what MCU gave.
Better hair & drip (outfit) too. This Strange is everything the MCU should have been. In the mCU, the Cloak is almost a better char. than him.
This is one of the most entertaining episodes of yours I've seen. The editing, the sass, the pacing, the chosen film, the parallels to the MCU, all the above. This was great.
I remember when this came out and I absolutely loved the animeted version of Dr.Strange. he knew so much more magic rather than just portals and a gold chain whip.
And he didn't spend most of his film obsessing over a bland ex. His biggest priority is failing to save his sister. COmpared to other versions where he talks about his sister for 20 sec. then skips over her to whine about his ex not wanting. lol
i was kinda annyoed that they just got rid of his sister in the backstory cause it added so much depth on why he became a surgeon and why he became so bitter to everyone
I felt for Strange the entire movie but I kind of get his mind frame. He has things from his past and he has all the awnsers and thinks he can fix everything around him. Yet he ends up pushing away everyone he wants to keep safe and it ends up with him alone. Married to his mission, to his cuase to never have love or anyone in his life. He is the greatest hero and he is the loneliest man in the universe and that's the saddest thing about his character. This is hinted in the movie and it's a sad narrative
This movie made me cry. I loved when he lets go of his guilt and the wall suddenly vanishes. 😭 all the feels! So many good messages in this show! The live action was super good too, but I honestly identified more with kaicilius than with Steven.
I could've sworn Strange resembled Keanu Reeves in the animated film. It's why I wanted him for the live-action movie.
I thought Cumberbatch was a miscast at first, and he was rather clunky the first movie. But 'Thor: Ragnarok' and 'Infinity War' saw him improved massively. Strange is also a far better character in 'Infinity War' than in his introduction film.
I’ve noticed something STRANGE (pun intended). Steven is usually a way better character outside of his own movies.
As mixed as these were, I do wish they had gotten to do more after Thor: Tales of Asgard, as maybe the quality could've become more consistent and maybe reach similar heights to DC's Direct-To-DVD movies.
I remember watching Planet Hulk, The Young Avengers, The Ultimate Avengers, Doctor Strange and hulk vs thor/wolverine movies all in my grandparents house when in was growing up up in the 2000s shit hittin me with nostalgia blast
Same I watched planet hulk, Hulk Vs Wolverine, The ultimate avengers avengers tomorrow my grandpa bought me them dvds bro
4:57 Dang, that picture with his sister is making me speculate a little too much about their relationship.
This animated movie was cool for sure. Definitely bringing me back to my high school days.
Honestly I love both movies. The animated one was so cool and I think that design of Doctor Strange is my favorite. (I love long coats) and MCU Doctor Strange is awesome too, and the comedic moments made me chuckle a few times.
Don't even mention it, when he did his glow up I could only think "Damn he's hot" if I was gay I'ld totally simp for him
I absolutely 100%............AGREES this film is badass.
If we ever get an animated film made out of both the animated and live-action version, then this might be just the best film
Keep ‘em coming!!!! This series is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!! I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!!!!
Spoiler: Animated versions of comic character are 9 out of 10 times better than the live action ones.
I've always liked this more than the other animated movies. Seeing the small Li Mei cameo made me think they're having a crossover.
THISSSS!!! THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING!! In my opinion, if you could boil everything that is Doctor Strange into one quintessential form, you would find it in this movie!
Without a shadow of a doubt the animated movie is better. Cool monsters fights throughout the movie, no goofy banter. Awesome dormammu design. More satisfying arc of Stephen working to become a wizard while still feeling special.
Im glad I saw this video.
I used to love some of the Ultimate Marvel movies but never seen this one and I agree with your takes
The ultimate avengers was my indroduction to the avengers & Black panther & so as this movie to doctor strange
I have been telling people about this movie since I saw it as a kid! It’s FANTASTIC!
Upon rewatching it a couple years back. the only thing I found I disliked was that Strange’s hands were fixed by the end of the movie, instead of him having to live with the pain like the regular version. I understand that magic could probably fix his hands, but it’s just a better message to not have a quick free fix to a problem a lot of people live with.
I remember watching the animated movie when I was a little kid! I agree that it was better
Sure MCU Strange has his own merit, the animated one just hit harder overall. Thank you for talking about this qnd unlocking some childhood memories!

I freaking love the audio of this movie. If you haven't, you have to check it out with surround sound. Or 3d headphones.
Dude I've been waiting for this. Watched it for the first time directly after watching your invincible iron man video and gotta say it does go hard 🔥🔥🔥
This movie is what got me interested into the Sorcerer Supreme and was my jumping off point, I still liked the first MCU movie and comparing the two is still what I do but in the giddy way. They both work, in different ways for their different mediums, and they both should be experienced.
I actually first recognized Strange by this media before the comics, then the Marvel vs Capcom 3 and before he became famous bec. of MCU
this was also my first introduction to dr. strange and i immediately loved him.
Amazing video as always!! 🎉
Love this movie, it’s what got me into Doctor Strange long before it was even announced for Phase Three. Thanks for covering it.
I bout a bootleg version of mcu movie and got this instead and I loved it more than the mcu version😂
This movie's dormmammu gave me nightmares for weeks, especially with the "possessed" kid
I watched the movie and......
The first half was pretty good.
I find the motivation of Strange of what happened to his sister really good.
Like that scene when he goes to his room and saw his picture with his sister laying their and he teared up, I felt that.
But in the other half, I felt that the story was trying to rush to the end, and it was too short to tell a big story like this.
And there is also some unanswered questions that the movie should have answered, like when Strange healed his hands, after that, he had no real reason to stay,
and Strange just accepts that Wang trains him to become a sorcerer.
Like why isn't he like:
Wow, thank u ancient One.
Now I can go back to being a doctor again to heal and help other people....
Like why does he suddenly goes along with everything?
And that pulled me out of the movie a bit, and i didn't like that very much.
And also, being a brother of a sister myself, I find their chemistry....idk if it's the voice acting or because of how the writhing is, but it felt more like a romantic relationship instead of a brother and sister thing....idk man, I find it a bit weird, a bit sus tbh.
But overall, the movie was decent.
So are you considering reviewing all the animated stuff like Hulk vs Wolverine? If you are, cool.
I love how any time Avi Arad is in a marvel project the video leaves a foreboding theme for him because we ALL know what he’s up to. Great video as always. Can’t wait for you to praise Tom’s Ultron in next avengers. Cheers.
I thought from the thumbnail, this was going to be about Strange Supreme from the show What If? Wasn't expecting a whole other movie, but I'm happy with this! Great video, man!
I havent seen this in forever😭 great review as always
Yep this was my introduction to Dr Strange and so many things in the MCU film reminded me of it. Loved Dr Strange's character arc in this
Funny you should put this up when I find my Marvel Animated DVDs a few days ago. Guess it's time to revisit.
Keep doin' what you're doin', my guy.
I'm so glad you made this video because tbh I watched this movie back when it was still on Netflix years ago and have been trying to tell if I fever dreamt it or not ever since
Yeah that was a good point because it was that rewards thing where he gets the bed n then shaved to look so cool
Yet another flawless Marcutio W, speaking of which you should make a series about superior characters being animated, whether it be marvel or DC
I've seen this years ago including those you mentioned at the end
Perfect video !
My great grandparents gave me a collection of marvel cartoons on dvd and this is one of them. This movie was great watch!
Funny shit is I watched this before the MCU one like years before and when I saw the MCU one I always felt like “hey I’ve , I’ve seen this before”
Cool stuff at the end
Anybody notice that Wong is played by the same guy who does Hanzo in overwatch?
😯😯😯
Great video!!!
I actually searched for the animated film a few years back and loved it. One thing it does much better than the MCU is making magic feel unique. Each wizard we see has a special flavor to their magic which is far superior to how Marvek just gave everyone the same effects. The only thing the MCU did better is having Strange outsmarting Dormmamu which is more on brand with his methodology. Establish early on that Strange isn't always gonna be able to out muscle threats but he's good at besting them in other ways.
We had so many great animated Marvel movies and shows in 2000’s and in the 90’s. This movie, Spectacular Spider-Man, The Avengers: EMH, Wolverine and the X-Men and Fantastic Four: World’s Greatest Heroes was MY MCU.
Lowkey mad tho that they teased Clea at the end and never gave me a follow up movie for that 😤
I’ve had the animated ‘Dr. Strange’ on DVD for over 10 years and never watched it all the way through.
I remember watch this Animations Dr Strange movie but I forgot want it call.. and thank you review this movie keep up
I actually like the ironman movie theres a cameo from lei mei anyone realized his sister was only brought in a foot note in multiverse of madness
Also this movie had the BEST VERSION OF WONG OUTSIDE OF THE COMICS
Also this movie seema in the same universe as the invincible ironman and it makes me wonder if the events of the ironman movie took place before this movie which is why we see lei mei in new york because shes on her way to see tony also this movies magic system and visual effects are FAR SUPERIOR THEN THE MCU
Editing is on point recently
3:44 You just reminded me of Sokka just now. lol
the animation was so good and the ending makes more sense to me
I have CD of this one it is so good and I think it come with the hell boy too.
I loved this movie! One of my favorites. I remember my dad getting this cause he vaguely knew who Dr. Strange was and wanted to show my brother and I
I saw this when I was small and it made me really love the character of Dr. Strange
“Steven touches her” goes crazy
First time someone comments on this, I cant believe they removed the reason why Stephen became so egotistical in the first place
I'll have to check it out
This is the only one of the liongate movies I’ve seen, and I love it!
Oh my god 😭😭😭
I’m almost forgot about this.
My stepfather was a big Marvel nerd and we rented this movie, Iron man and the Ultimate Avengers movies, from Hastings.
So nostalgic, thank you for revisiting this masterpiece
I just rewatched it last night along with ultimate avenger 2 and next avenger
That's why is called a MULTIVERSE. They're all different, but they all exist.
What did you guys think of The Super Mario Bros. Movie?
I loved it. I would give 8.5/10, 4 stars 👍
Far from a “Meh” But nowhere near enough to be a “Wow”
it was goated for what it intended to be but i get why critics dont like it that much...the plot is even more simple than what i expected, but to be fair it's not like there's that much Mario Lore in comparison to Sonic Lore
This made me love this character.
