  • Half a million free meals were delivered to homebound, senior citizen New Yorkers by a single nonprofit in 2023. For nearly 50 years, Encore Community Services has operated a meal delivery service out of St. Malachy’s church in Midtown Manhattan's theater district, serving 1,200 meals a day to seniors living alone on Manhattan's West side. Follow volunteer Royal Albis as he drives 50 blocks in rush hour traffic to make deliveries to an isolated senior in need of food and company. And hear Chitra Desai's story about how she went from ensuring others had enough to eat to needing assistance herself. Many New Yorkers only have social security income and inflation and decreased physical mobility greatly affects access to nutritious food - and company.

I wish they expanded this for all housebound people. Not every disabled person is old.

Love these programs! Older adults are our future and society is judged by how we take care of the disabled, marginalized, and the aging population. These programs are vital and a true testament. We will be old one day… and we need to have these programs and more in place. Kudos to Encore!

Great video! I had a period where I had to use this service; my mom also ended up needing to use it for a while.

All people need to realize that they will either die young or grow old. So please love and cherish the elderly.😇

My parents have received these free meals in the past. Grateful for the care and blessings from these types of programs.

I love programs like this. My dad did this and only ate the meals maybe half the time (he couldn’t, for reasons you can probably guess) but it was so good to have a human knock on his door 3 times a day.

She looks great for 88 years of age. She looks better than most 60 year Olds.

Thirty seconds of very brief chat at the door as the food is dropped off is better than nothing, but that is NOT friendship.

She’s been a widow since 1988 and never found companionship with someone else? This is extremely sad that all she has are these people to talk to.🤷🏾‍♀️🤔
