    Lyrics:
Wanda had a baby in nineteen fifty one.
The father was stranger and a stranger was the son.
Call that child James Lewis, call these rooms a home.
Changing all them diapers polish all that chrome.
See'mon, baby, spend the night with me
All around the schoolyard playing all the games
Running, laughing back and forth the kid with two first names
Stranger in the closet, lock the diary
The past is running faster singing harmony
See'mon, baby, spend the night with me
"God bless this kitchen" said the knick-knack shelf
"The dinner's almost ready Go and wash yourself"
Jimmy's growing up now and Wanda's growing old
The time is growin' shorter the nights are long and cold
See'mon, baby, spend the night with me
Sneaking in the closet and through the diary
Now, don't you know all he saw was all there was to see
The whole town saw Jimmy on the six o'clock news
His brains were on the sidewalk and blood was on his shoes
See'mon, baby, spend the night with me
See'mon, baby, spend the night with me
    Singer. Songwriter. Poet. Icon.
John Prine was an artist’s artist with a list of admirers and collaborators that cut across musical genres and generations - names like Kris Kristofferson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Brandi Carlile, George Strait, Kurt Vile, Miranda Lambert, The Everly Brothers, Emmylou Harris, among others.
Though he was born in Maywood, Illinois, in 1946, John declared himself “pure Kentuckian” throughout his life. His parents, Willian and Verna, were natives of Paradise, Kentucky. The family would spend summers there in Muhlenberg County, where John listened to bluegrass music and studied the guitar styles of country music heroes Doc Watson and Merle Travis with his older brother, Dave.
In Maywood, he worked as a postman before being drafted into the army in 1966. It was as a postman that John began to write the songs that would connect with so many. He sang at Chicago folk clubs, where he was introduced to singer-songwriter Kris Kristopherson, who invited John to open for him in New York. It was there that Jerry Wexler, president of Atlantic Records, first heard Prine and offered him a recording contract. His self-titled debut album was released in 1971 and featured a list of songs now regarded as classics, including “Paradise,” “Angel From Montgomery,” “Illegal Smile,” Hello in There,” and “Sam Stone.” Prine received the first of his 13 Grammy nominations in 1972 for Best New Artist. He would record three more albums for Atlantic and another three with Asylum.
His profound impact on American music was amplified in 1981 when John co-founded Oh Boy Records, and independent label where he released most of his subsequent work and which gave voice and respect to so many fellow singers and songwriters.
In his distinguished career, John won four Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2020). He was a three-time recipient of the Artist of the Year Award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards, which also honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Songwriting. He won the Pen/New England Song Lyrics of Literary Excellence Award (2016) and was enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019). In addition, John was named Honorary Poet Laureate of Illinois (2020).
John Prine passed away on April 7, 2020 due to complications from Covid-19. The outpouring of grief and love from his fan community was staggering. Over 500,000 viewers participated in an online memorial and tribute that raised more than half a million dollars for Covid-related community causes. In 2021, the Prine family created the Hello In There Foundation to honor John’s spirit of generosity towards those in need. Fiona Prine and her sons continue to operate and expand the reach of John’s independent record label, Oh Boy Records.

I've been a country/folk/bluegrass musician for 50 years. I'm 70-years old. When I heard that John Prine had passed away, I sat down at my desk top computer & cried for hours listening to every song John Prine recorded. John Prine is sacred. He touched my soul with his honesty, love, lost-love, heartache, humor, & his unique voice & finger-pickin'. I can relate to John Prine. I'll play my Martin D-35 guitar, flat-pickin', finger-pickin', & singin' with a baritone voice until I pass away. I'm glad I took my adult sons with me to country/bluegrass/folk song festivals since they were 11-12 years old. Ian is now 40 & Adam is 38. They're both musicians with day jobs. Thanks to John Prine, Tony Rice, & many others my sons still jam with me with several friends they grew up with who are also musicians. Thank you John. Our Father in Heaven, Jesus Christ, & the Holy Spirit thank you with smiles in Heaven with you by their side. Amen! Scott Duncan, Orange County, CA

John Prine was one of my many influences during growing up, being on the road as a teen, and eventually being taken in on an off-grid homestead farm in Northern Michigan (UP) by a Vietnam combat vet and his family in 1976. That's where I heard JP first, milked goats at 5 in the AM, smoked joints, slopped hogs, milled lumber, etc., to John Prine and others on a Pioneer Super Tuner, which we had on the tractor, in the truck and in the old 1910 cabin.
Years later, during one of life's crises, hinging on whether to continue onward or not, about age 30, he advertised a show, so that weekend I drove to Sandpoint Idaho to the Panida Theater at a time that I knew I was at a T in the road, and I was either going to turn right and find reason and meaning to keep going, or turn left and bring things to a halt.
There were many unique and oddly humorous events before that show, sitting on an old hardwood bus bench out in front of the theater, and I went in, by myself, still fairly dulled by life.
JP at some point broke into a beautiful and heartfelt presentation of Angel from Montgomery, always a favorite of mine and reflective of much of life's broken promises.
      I'm still here.
We've (my wife of now-35 years and I) have seen him numerous times before he died. His death was the point at which CIOVD became personal, and I hated it for stealing a distant mentor who never knew me but provided so much.
He was a mostly humble and gracious, giving and caring person, who could take the 'acidity of life', paste an angle of view on it that brough the sorts of smiles that folks who've been tarnished by fire can grin along with, and make it into just another survivable curve ball amidst the Cosmic Joke of it all. He was gifted that way. Very much so.
      We miss him enormously.
Thanks your for your comment, it was spot-on.

A couple weeks ago I lost the best friend I never met. We started hanging out in the early 70's while I was getting introduced to pot and he just sat around playing songs in my living room. I continued hanging out with John up until a couple weeks ago. Made it a lot of years together. Now that I'm knocking on the door of beginning my 8th decade of survival, I look forward to keep hanging out with John exactly as I always have; but with the devastating knowledge that never again will I get to enjoy the thrill of listening to a new JP song for the first time. Instead, I plan on getting some more of that pot from my grandson and listening to John's songs and hopefully understanding them for the first time. Yeah, John got me through every good time and every bad time of my entire adult life and I ain't quitting now. I plan to be listening to John when I take my last breath, again with my best friend. I'm hoping I can meet him then. Always wanted to smoke a nine mile long cigarette while sipping on a vodka and ginger ale. Except, I think I want a cigar instead.

After the better of part of 50 years John Prine at the Head (Dylan nodded then too). He is the whole most best and sweetest i'd miss if i was dead.

Such a fantastic song. There's a good challenge for me, do both the guitar fingerpicking and harmonica parts in the same take!

I can't describe in words how he has t ouched me. What a special person, song writer guitars player.
I planebto learn to play one of his songs. That he,s gone I'm sad. I would have see him in c once rt.
