How could we NOT give this award to Jason. Not only Player of the Year, but a strong candidate for player of the century... easily a top 10 ALL TIME great since the instrument first came into existence back in the 1800's.
Thank you guys it's hard to even talk about this one. Winning the 2017 "Bernie Brae Harmonica Player of the Year" award from the Society for the Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica (SPAH). I don't know if this is the best or most important career milestone for me yet but it's my personal favorite and means a whole lot more than I have words to express. The fact that this honor is bestowed by SPAH an organization dear to my heart, that does so much for people, music and harmonica, the fact that this award comes from my peers it's not specific to any singular musical genre, it's for harmonica- this makes me very grateful. It never made sense to me when people say they were or are "humbled" by winning an award until now. I am truly humbled, grateful and feel more of a "call to service" in this community than ever before now. Thank you SPAH and everyone that made this possible I am in your debt and proud to be of service to this amazing community that has taught, guided and give me so many friends, wonderful experiences and education all these years.

I found you in a fluke event heading back to my bed and breakfast in Key West many years ago when you were playing the green parrot down the street and heard a harmonica sound that I hadn't heard before. I've been a fan ever since and have been lucky enough to follow your career. You have helped Advance the instrument and expand how it's used. What better Legacy in any community with any activity. I was thinking today: "Gee, I wish I could attend a conference or something dedicated to harmonica." I was watching Jason Ricci videos (as I like to do), and I saw this. I wondered how old it was and holy crap, it was today!!??! I'm so bummed I'm not there now and I didn't even know about it until 5 minutes ago. :)
Don't know where you are, Trent --but Spah is held in a different US City every year. I don't know yet where next year's will be (had to cancel my own attendance in Tulsa this year), but they've gone all over. It's a wonderful few days of non-stop harmonica playing of all kinds, including some of the best coming in to entertain. WELL worth getting involved with Spah (Society for the Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica). Jason's been a member for years as have so many others from around the world. Check out Spah dot org - if you join up you'll get their newsletters which has great articles, info and a discount on next year's convention, and meet so many other harmonica players.
