- This video details the repair of the shift motor on a 1989-1992 Ford Ranger with push-button 4x4. It also works on Explorers of the same era.
Sorry for the poor filming, I made this video on a spur and used my cell phone.
This will be a free repair unless you have to buy the T20 bit, which is about $2.
I forgot to explain in the video that the reason the bushing cracks and breaks up is from the high-torque motor smashing it repeatedly against it's stop. That's why I used the hose, because it will absorb the impact a little better.
Great fix for dead 4wd on a 93 explorer. Did not have to remove motor or cut any wires - just had to put a pillow under my head while under the car for 2 hrs. The gear can be extracted using needle nose pliers on the little protruding rivet. Gasket for cover fell apart so had to re-seal using a little silicone.
Great Post! My, how good it is to watch someone that knows how before I try it. It's good guys like you that take the time to show us how to do things that youtube was made for. Thank You!
1 hour under the 93 and I have my 4-wheel drive back. You can do this without cutting the wires. Take the balancer off and use it as a stand for the motor. There is enough wire so you don’t have to cut it. Thanks for the video.
I fixed mine hanging down without cutting wires. I used a piece of clear tubing from the hospital. My symptoms were locked in 4x4 high. THANK YOU! 1990 Ranger.
O yeah, took maybe 30 min total.
Nice
Ford corrected the issues shown in this video with the rubber/plastic bumper and the switch in later iterations of their transfer case motor. The rotary switch was changed to a sealed unit separate from the gear and they did away with the rubber/plastic grommet on the bumper screw.
PS: I'd suggest that anyone with a newer version consider taking the old one off the vehicle, dissemble the switch from the motor (remember to mark location of the switch because there is a calibration range built into the mounting tabs), check the electric motor for operation, and clean and re-lube the gear and worm drive. Also spin the shaft on the sealed switch a few times.
If the motor appears to function off the truck then, before re-installing the motor assy plug it in and see if it will operate if you select the 4 wheel drive options with the vehicles selector switch.
On my 2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac I had 4 wheel drive again after using the method above and didn't have to buy a new Transfer case motor.
Holy crap - it worked! Saved me a quote of $700. Thank you for posting this. BTW - the filler hose from a bottle of tire slime is the perfect fit.
Thank you so much for posting this video. I had not been able to use my four-wheel-drive for two years because I didn't want to spend a lot of money to repair, but after watching this video I repaired it myself for no cost at all. Again, thank you so much.
I'm having a 4x4 issue w my 93 Ranger. When I depress the 4x4 button it lights up but no 4x4. I guess I gotta try this. Thanks man. Great find.
Thank you for the info, I fixed my 93 Ranger shift motor but I done mine under the truck without unplugging or cutting wire, I took the plate off first with the T20 torx, then removed the motor assembly and cut my clear tubing bushing and put in place then I remounted the motor, then placed the inner plate in place and replaced the cover and it worked great thanks again for the video
Awesome
Absolutely worked. Great video. Haven’t had 4x4 in 7 years, 1 hour under the truck and boom, 4x4 works again.
Was the light on your dashboard coming on or just nothing at all? Mines not working at all.
Holy crap, it took less effort to fix that bushing than what I’ll have to do to return that new unneeded shift motor back to Amazon. 1993 Ford Ranger, mine looked different inside but same homemade bushing fixed it. Lifted the truck for more room and undid three Phillips head. Used needle nose players to pull the gear out then made a washer out of tubing. Cut mine tall like the video here and reinstalled. Didn’t even see the old bushing inside so I guess it has been vaporized. Special thanks to the video poster and the helpful people in the comments. Took me twenty minutes to fix the truck. Btw, replacing the whole part looked to be a nightmare as mine had wire coming out from the shift motor where the new part had some hard glue sealing that portal. Happy days @4x4
I found this video a while back and couldn’t find again. I just remembered the broke bushing. My explorer has the same problem.. finally 1.5 years later I found again by searching the part number for transfer. This is 90% what goes wrong with this motor. You can get a Teflon bushing to replace. Thanks for this bud
I bought a 1992 xlt 4.0 4x4 and sure enough no working 4x4, put a piece of tubing and bammmm! she clicks into 4x4 and also low range! I think I need to replace the auto hubs because they kick in intermittently only. thanks for the vid literally took me 15 mins to fix my ranger thanks again!
I can't thank you enough. This saved me a lot of money. I used this tip on my 1993 Bronco and it was exactly the same. I had to use a piece of black pressure hose. Instant fix. Thanks again.
I have a bronco as well. My 4”4 went out and we’ve got about three ft of snow here In Chicago. Gonna try this out tomorrow to see if it fixes the 4”4
@@federicosalinas8839 Did it work?
It didn’t I just ended up buying a whole new actuator
Fixed mine today took about 2 hours including beer breaks. works great now. good video
Thanks for the great fix idea, worked like a charm on my 93 !
Thanks for the video Sofa it worked great. Guys I did this to my 94 ranger and it worked. My bushing was smashed on one side, replaced it with the rubber tube and voilà I have 4x4 again.
I hope this works. I'm gonna remove my shift motor tomorrow and look at the bushing.. thank you sofa
This was the fix in my 92 FR. This guys is the man. What about the gasket. Can't seem to find a replacement
Thanks for taking the time to help others.
I was about to build a set of levers to manually do my shifts, but before that, I’ll give this a try.
Thanks man.
Thank you!!! I made my own bushing out of a thick wire covering
Damn nice video. Just took mine apart and found out the bushing was broken. I saw a comment below about someone using the rubber hose from the slime sealant for bikes. I can confirm that's the perfect fit! Do we need to re-grease the gear when putting it back together? I also was able to take apart under the car without cutting any wires.
Thank you so so much, we just fixed one and were doing the next one
The plastic bushing that you said needs to be aligned comes off it goes into the case then the gear slides on it after you lube it
Hey man, thank you for this video! Four wheel drive has been out for years. This worked first try, and damn did it feel good to see those lights come back on. Have a good one.
Thanks for the video. I think this will help my with troubleshooting my 88 B2
Great video sir. Thank you for making the video and helping others
Thank you
I'm going to give this a try ..
My best to you 👍😎
This is a great fix-it video. I would like to buy you a tripod though.
Thanks for the help.
I think I'm in love 😆 You Rock! Thank you!
tHANK YOU SO MUCH. I AM GOING TO GIVE IT A TRY
1992 ranger i pushed the 4×4 high and now its stock in 4×4 i cant take it off nothing happens just like you say. i will try what u did here. thanks
angel madrid did you ever try to fix it? just curious mine will go in and won't come out.
I watched a video just yesterday on a early model Eddie Bauer explores which had a ground wire to break on the shift motor which was the problem. But I have a 1998 Ranger in which I'm hoping that this is the problem. Thanks
I have a 91 Eddie Bauer explorer. Thanks for this tip. Also my 4x4 and low range lights are on constant. Could this be my problem?
@@davidadams7195 bruh I would hate to tell you wrong. But it could possibly be. Check connections at the shift motor, the ground wire, and maybe even the buttons or twist knobs to activate your 4 wheel drive. My problem actually ended up being a bad shift motor. I purchased one from O'Reilly for $76. And now the four wheel drive works just fine.
Would you have the color code description for the 4 wires on top of the cap?
You fuckin saved my ass bud!
What were you symptoms? 4 wheels hights on dash flashing?
That is the issue I am having. Wondering if this is the cause of it.
Will this work on a 1993 Ranger?
Mine goes in high but not in low, I wonder if this is my issue ?
did ur truck click when u put n drive
will this work on a 94 ford ranger
I've got a 94, will this still work?
Would this cause the issue I'm having 93 Ford Explorer push the button nothing happens no lights no clicks nothing haven't took the motor off yet got a new Switch on the way
It's much different on a newer model and I need help for a Ford f150 2010
My 90 ranger will not shift into 4x4 when its cold outside do you think this will fix my problem
Would this also work on the 93-97 models? Thanks
Did this actually work for you?
What about the motor lining up with the key on the t case when reinstalling the motor?
What about it? What was your question?
how do you know you when you got a bad transfer motor switch
Any one know if the part is the same on a 1994 ?
Thanks, ahead of time .
Any way to convert it to manual
Can someone tell me why my transmission wants to slip when you start out in overdrive, but if you take off in drive,it dose fine and you can shift it in to overdrive and it will do fine
That’s a transmission issue, take your truck to a trusted mechanic and have them look at it.
Anyone have an idea if my 92 explorer pushing on 4x4 properly, but it can’t go on low position. Nothings happen when i push a low button.
4x4 High

Will this work for a 1998 Ford Explorer?
I'm wondering the same, I have a 98 ranger 4x4
I have a 1998 Ranger to! Will it be the same?
Good hack though
Camera man is the worst! 🤣
Bla, Bla, bla
Another video with low volume. Sucks.
