I went in the ARMY in 87, I was hoping to catch an SRV concert before I went, but my friends car broke down on the way to the concert and we never made it. I got out in 1990 2 weeks later he passed away in that damn crash.

One of the greatest electric guitarists of all time. Very distinctive style. Died in a chopper crash after a concert. The story goes that Eric Clapton gave up his seat to him because Stevie was in a bigger hurry to get to the airport. It was a tragic day. And another source of pain in Clapton’s life. Have you listened to “Tears in Heaven” by Eric Clapton? That’s a required song for you to cover! Keep it up, I love your channel.

This was pretty restrained, actually, because it was a TV show (Austin City Limits). In regular shows he'd do it as the last encore, and it would take like 15 minutes with extended solos especially at the end. I saw him rip the whammy bar entirely off of Old #1 (the beatup guitar he's playing in this video) by accident, then just throw it in the audience. Also much love for Double Trouble, they were/are awesome. Some glorious s**t, man.

He was so very very special in that he could, back in the day and up to this moment, take me to another place; a peaceful place where I hope to meet him in person. He lived a hard life but his eternal gift was untouchable talent and a genuine love for others with whom he so graciously shared selfless kindness . He is for me irreplaceable. He and Carlos Santana helped me learn to play the guitar just like I’m ringin a bell. With nothing but humble intentions I play with this level of skill and I must admit it’s an adrenaline spiritual rush that is very hard to explain. I been playing guitar since 94, so believe me when I say...this guy was a true master.... to all my guitarist peeps out there, random thing to notice but how smooth he changes pick up and volume and tone, just that in itself is phenomenal, the end of the first section before he sings...he must change pick up 5 or 6 times in about 10 seconds. perfectly part of his strum pattern

I love SRV doing this song. But his originals, songs he wrote are just fantastic. The PBS station used to play videos with lyrics to highlight nouns, verbs, etc. One of the videos they used was Cold Shot. That was my introduction to Stevie Ray Vaughn. I was 13 and the song has just been released. 1983. Man, the 80s were great.
Jimi Hendrix was many things. Shy, talented, humble, addicted, innovator, pioneer, and when it came to making comments about his or any other great guitar player of the day, as brutally honest about that as it came. In one of his final interviews with Great Britain's Melody Maker Magazine, Hendrix spoke candidly about how he felt himself, Johnny Winter, & Carlos Santana had all played strong sets at Woodstock, but went on to say of the 3+days of music that was played there, and I now quote, "nobody outplayed Alvin Lee of Ten Years After, and I mean nobody." Jimmy was always quick to heap praise on his fellow guitar gun slinger's, and were he alive to have bore witness, I think he would've been the first person to say that Stevie had taken his covers of Hendrix's Third Stone From The Sun, Little Wing, & Voodoo Chile' on a few stones further from the sun than he'd ever taken them before. That's not for a second a slight or knock at Hendrix's playing and ability, it's merely a compliment about how incredibly gifted Stevie Ray Vaughan really was on guitar.
I vividly remember when I learned he had died in a helicopter accident after a show in Wisconsin. I lived in Dallas, and I went to run some errands on my lunch break. EVERY radio station I tuned in to was playing SRV songs. I thought WOW, how weird! Then a song ended and the DJ said that’s the late, great, one in a billion, SRV. I couldn’t believe it. All of Dallas (his hometown) was in mourning. His funeral was so packed with people, it stopped traffic on I-35. Just overwhelming disbelief and sadness. I can still feel it. Thank you for this.

First of all, this is a song written and originally released by Jimi Hendrix. Stevie LOVED Jimi Hendrix. He carried a polaroid of the man and his signature in his wallet for years. When interviewed, Stevie would often say that he could tell what Hendrix was thinking when he composed certain songs. There were times when Stevie felt that Hendrix was playing through him. You get a sense of that in Voodoo Chile (slight return). Good song to start with on SRV. That was an original Jimi Hendrix tune that Stevie Ray Vaughan learned. He also uses 13 gauge guitar strings. That would rip the skin off most peoples fingers. He also never learned how to read sheet music on musical notes. He taught himself to play by ear starting as a child at age 7. He said he played damn near every day of his life listening to the jazz great and a lot of the black artist from the 50s and 60s.

to all my guitarist peeps out there, random thing to notice but how smooth he changes pick up and volume and tone, just that in itself is phenomenal, the end of the first section before he sings...he must change pick up 5 or 6 times in about 10 seconds. perfectly part of his strum pattern
Anyone who lives in or around Chicago, Guitar Center there has one of SRV’s Lenny’s (guitars) hanging in the front as you walk in, in a plexiglass case. Incredible to see that play wear in person. Insanity.
I love SRV doing this song. But his originals, songs he wrote are just fantastic. The PBS station used to play videos with lyrics to highlight nouns, verbs, etc. One of the videos they used was Cold Shot. That was my introduction to Stevie Ray Vaughn. I was 13 and the song has just been released. 1983. Man, the 80s were great.
Jimi Hendrix was many things. Shy, talented, humble, addicted, innovator, pioneer, and when it came to making comments about his or any other great guitar player of the day, as brutally honest about that as it came. In one of his final interviews with Great Britain's Melody Maker Magazine, Hendrix spoke candidly about how he felt himself, Johnny Winter, & Carlos Santana had all played strong sets at Woodstock, but went on to say of the 3+days of music that was played there, and I now quote, "nobody outplayed Alvin Lee of Ten Years After, and I mean nobody." Jimmy was always quick to heap praise on his fellow guitar gun slinger's, and were he alive to have bore witness, I think he would've been the first person to say that Stevie had taken his covers of Hendrix's Third Stone From The Sun, Little Wing, & Voodoo Chile' on a few stones further from the sun than he'd ever taken them before. That's not for a second a slight or knock at Hendrix's playing and ability, it's merely a compliment about how incredibly gifted Stevie Ray Vaughan really was on guitar.

I vividly remember when I learned he had died in a helicopter accident after a show in Wisconsin. I lived in Dallas, and I went to run some errands on my lunch break. EVERY radio station I tuned in to was playing SRV songs. I thought WOW, how weird! Then a song ended and the DJ said that’s the late, great, one in a billion, SRV. I couldn’t believe it. All of Dallas (his hometown) was in mourning. His funeral was so packed with people, it stopped traffic on I-35. Just overwhelming disbelief and sadness. I can still feel it. Thank you for this.

First of all, this is a song written and originally released by Jimi Hendrix. Stevie LOVED Jimi Hendrix. He carried a polaroid of the man and his signature in his wallet for years. When interviewed, Stevie would often say that he could tell what Hendrix was thinking when he composed certain songs. There were times when Stevie felt that Hendrix was playing through him. You get a sense of that in Voodoo Chile (slight return). Good song to start with on SRV. That was an original Jimi Hendrix tune that Stevie Ray Vaughan learned. He also uses 13 gauge guitar strings. That would rip the skin off most peoples fingers. He also never learned how to read sheet music on musical notes. He taught himself to play by ear starting as a child at age 7. He said he played damn near every day of his life listening to the jazz great and a lot of the black artist from the 50s and 60s.
