Love the shout out for My old ass. I absolutely loved it. So funny, charming and emotional. Rebel ridge is pretty awesome but I feel like it’s pretty well known. Not sure if it deserves a spot here.
Great video. I did not know Transformers One went unnoticed during its theatrical run. I thought it was a phenomenal film and would have loved to see more films following that version of Transformers.
People cited John Wick as an inspiration for Monkey Man, which I could see, due to colour palette, lighting, the rapid action sequences and taking place within tiers of society that are above or below the ones of most people. I think two differences are that guns aren't heavily used, and the Kid is like a pre-John Wick because he gets his ass handed to him throughout much of the first half of the movie, before undertaking a training montage to become a badass.
Great list. I loved the ones I saw and want to see the ones I didn't. My Old Ass was the highlight of my movie-going year. Already a Maisy Stella fan (from 6 years of Nashville and Lennon & Maisy music), and Aubrey Plaza too of course. I hoped for a fun movie. I got a beautiful little gem that I've streamed twice more and will never forget. It's just gorgeous.
I Saw the TV Glow should have been on the list, not just an HM. Film had such an effect on me, positively. Original, earnest, and incredibly well shot, and acted. I'm also afraid Oddity is going to get lost in the shuffle. Impeccably executed nail-biter/horror that definitely feels like a modern Hitchcock. Horror fans should definitely give it a look.
Transformers one is easily the most underrated film that got released this year. It could’ve had so much potential had some idiotic marketing and an imbecilic producer not screwed it over.
I’m a little sad Cuckoo (2024) isn’t here. It’s not like ground breaking, but it’s definitely underrated and Hunter Schafer did a great job as the lead (as well as the other performers in the film). Definitely a great A24 like (it’s by Neon I think) film, especially since Maxxxine, which is not only similarly released in a similar way about a month a two apart but also both action/horror films, but Maxxxine ending a bit meh, despite it short runtime while Cuckoo, which is about the same length was captivating from beginning to end and made sense; definitely reminds me of Dario Argento films. Highly recommend it!
I would add A Real Pain. Jesse Eisenberg did such a wonderful job performing, writiing and directing, and Kieran Culkin will make you laugh and break your heart at the same time.
I wanted to go see Blink Twice but I missed the window since my local theater only put up a handful of viewings of it within one week, and none of them matched my schedule.
“Juror Number Two” should be added to the list. It’s getting rave reviews with praise towards Clint Eastwood’s direction, Nicolas Hoult’s performance and its story about the flaws and politics of the criminal justice system. Unfortunately, Warner Bros released it in less than 50 theaters in the United States, which is a really odd decision.
What about Saturday Night? That's actually my favourite film of this year and I don't see many people talking about it. Also I loved Monkey Man as well
I think Transformers One got some inspiration from Planes ,Trains and Automobile film/holiday comedy. Optimus Prime derives from John Candy/Griffith and Megatron derives from Steve Martins/Page
I really liked Abigail, it's pretty goofy and over the top, but it knows what it is, and it digs its heels into the ridiculous absurdity. There were some parts that had me dying laughing, and they don't skimp out on the gore and violence either.
@@elvinobiakalusi7505 that part where they're trying to find garlic, and the idiot comes back with big ass white onions. "THOSE ARE F*!CKING ONIONS!!!!" 🤣🤣🤣 I couldn't stop laughing, the poor guy was so exasperated by how dumb she was.
I think there were two key reasons the Transformers One failed in making money: one, the obvious, Transformers fatigue, with the expectations of the franchise being so low that nobody cares to bother with it anymore; the second was due to a failure in marketing, since all trailers made it look like a dumb kid's movie - while the stupid jokes are there, there are more elements (like mentioned above) that made it vastly more mature than the Bayformers.
_Monkey Man_ suffered from not having characters called Tweeter and Jan. If they were part of the movie, we’d have a nice and subtle reference to Traveling Wilburys’ “Tweeter and the Monkey Man.”

Great thriller that has some really well timed comedy (and not too much of it), even if the almost dream sequence towards the end felt a little too unreal even with the steroid stuff preceeding it. 5-1. Didn't see these either, just no interest. Honorable Mentions. - That description of I Saw the TV Glow seems...sparse, but I'm not sure I could rightly write anything better without spoiling what it's really about so fair enough. I will say that seeing it in the theater blind had me thinking about it far longer than most movies. The hard hitting scenes hit really hard, even if I was almost bored in others. I guess what I'm saying is that it's a pretty unique experience, worth it if you're looking for something that'll stick with you for awhile. - Abigail was a really fun popcorn movie, too spooky and gory for the kids but good horror comedy fun. I don't think it lived up to how excellent Ready or Not was, but that's one of my favorite movies of all time so still pretty good.
Saw Kinds of Kindness, was interesting - great variety of actors doing a good job in it. Saw the First Omen. was incredibly scary but not recommended for the squeamish or highly religious. Saw Abigail, was an amazing twist on a horror-genre with good, authentic acting. Thanks MoJo, gonna look the rest of these mentioned up and check them out.🙃
