- Black in Tokyo was created with the intention of exposing people around the world to the black foreign experience of living in a homogenous country. Directed by Nigerian-American artist Amarachi Nwosu, the film follows five subjects, with origins ranging from West Africa to the U.S., narrating the different cultural challenges and opportunities of living in Tokyo, Japan.

I actually like that they call it "Black Music." They're giving credit where it's due.
black people need to have a identity other than being bound by their skin colour
joblu pata We do lol. But considering alot of people don't have knowledge on that we get put in one category. Kinda like how in America we say almost every Asian person looks Chinese. We know not all Asian people are Chinese. But that's just the perception of the untrained eye. There's African (multitude of cultures) , Afro American, and Afro Carribean. And plenty others I'm definitely leaving out. But it is what it is. As long as your confident in your self it doesn't necessarily matter how others view you. Because they are on the outside, not the inner you.

@@user-il7zm5sh7x Learning culture can often be eye opening. I have seen family and Japanese friends crying over the racism in Japan. This country is in the top 25 most racist countries in the world. I think that is a bit modest. I have no idea how Japan got the reputation for having such great manners. That is a complete lie. Some people do, but good luck with that. Those people exist but very rare.

Shout out to dude for mentioning Toonami. We used to rush home after school just to watch Toonami 🙏💯😍. Especially Dragon Ball, Salor Moon, & Tenchi Muyo.
The funny part is in NY it only came on at midnight. I was an insomnia and had tsunami and x files.. but I loved Naruto, bleach, one piece, fairy tale, zetman but I couldn't get into sailor moon.. when I first started watching toonami they played cowboy bebop and sailor moon a lot.. too tomboy for sailor moon but I loved cowboy bebop. I miss the early 2000s lol Anime has only gotten better
Facts toonami is still lit.
Still watch today. DBZ
I loved watching Toonami as a kid. That was when Cartoon Network was king.
Wow tenchi muyo me n u must be the same Age
What a great quote from that African guy "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" that's fairly important in any homogenous country.
So... be racist like Japanese while in Japan. Love your logic!

@@linkskywalker5417 Japan just don't want foreigners to destroy their culture and turn it into some multicultural garbage.
The first rule of travel is respect the culture of the place you are. And the best place to show this respect is by learning the language. A simple rule which is often forgotten.
Nicely said @ESUSAMEX
Boiled down to: Learn to speak the language. Level up.
i studied for 3 years before moving to japan and im SO glad i did because it's made my experience so much richer than i could imagine it would've been if i couldn't speak it. i'm fluent at this point and it just feels great to be able to chat with natives with no stress, pick up manga and books and read them, play japanese games. its just great. the effort is so worth it
I'm learning the language rn
I agree with you, as long as you can speak the language, you can get along anywhere in the world.
All this generation does is cray damn
Burns me up. It would take a lot more will power. Japanese and English are on complete opposite sides of the spectrum when it comes to writing, pronunciation and sentence structure whereas English and Spanish is fairly similar but I do agree that foreigners going to a country and not learning the language and then expecting you to understand them would be incredibly frustrating
One thing i love about japanese is that theyre NOT culture bandits.
They dont sample thing make it their own and pretend rhey invented it.
They pay true gomage to whete theyve gotten things give respect ro the originators and keep it pure
Yep!!!
@GreaterGood510 Wrong. You don't know what you're talking about and neither do you know shit other than your misguided and ignorant comments with generalizing. Get to know a Black person instead of writing comments behind a screen that you'd never say in person. Let's meet in person and see if you're willing to do so.
@GreaterGood510 What?
@GreaterGood510 African Americans create soul, swing, gospel, funk, r&b, jazz, rap, hip hop, and started pop in the US and globally, since pop was literally interchangeable white rock music (started by blacks) during the early-mid 20th century. black people sampled their own music, hell, the whole world did. even EDM, skrillex, and techno groups used the most popular 4 beat drum solo used by almost every major artist, just search up amen, brothers sampled beat. the more you know!

As a black man, this video definitely makes me feel less weird about admiring Japanese culture so much. I'm at the point now where I'm trying to learn Japanese with the hope of being able to travel to Japan one day. And it always occurs to me that I may be a little crazy for wanting to step out my comfort zone so much by following this path, but it seems to me that I'm not the only one who's this crazy.
I'm currently studying Japanese in hopes of visiting one day. I am enamored with Japanese culture because my parents spoke so highly of Japan after being there for a few months prior to my birth.
This comment resonates as I'm exactly the same.. I'm trying to self-teach myself to learn to speak the language and I already have some Japanese Tendencies...

I don't know how deep y'all are into learning Japanese, but here's my advice. First, learn the alphabet, otherwise know as the kana. You can't go far without it. Personally I learned to write it to help memorization. Only use apps that will teach you the actually strokes to writing. Second step is to actually learn the language. I don't recommend Duolingo cause when I first used it, it was complicated. And I have experience learning other languages. Use an app called "kawaii nihongo". I believe it was meant for kids. But for such a difficult language like Japanese, they made learning it reasonable. And from there I recommend Duolingo. Good luck

I stumbled across this randomly, but I am Japanese and Black. We go and visit our relatives from Yokohama every year. One thing that blew me away the first time I visited Tokyo was the actual LACK of prejudice. I think there's this harsh and exaggerated stereotype that Japanese people are hardcore nationalists/racists. My family actually is incredibly mixed in general. So, when all of us are together in public there's Colombian, Irish, Black, Mexican, Japanese, Korean, etc lineage in the vicinity and it's totally appreciated and accepted. In general, I'd say Japanese people are far more blunt than people expect, but it never comes from a place of sheer hatred. It's more so ignorance. Take into account that the country is highly homogenous. If you respect their customs and cultures, then they deal you your due respect as well. They're not going to come at you sideways for no reason.
if only the world was like this
Get off japans ballz. People in america want people to follow our laws and lanuage but we get called bigot or racist.
Found by immigrants so i guess we just take em all....
Its creating the tension. Why do people go to asia and fall in line
But go to america to carve out a community and piece of pie.
Not fair
Two totally different things. The United States was established off of the basis of racial tension. Japan simply was not. Their comprehension and perception of race is totally different than that of ours in the U.S. As mentioned prior, the homogenous nature of their society makes social/political interactions way different. We literally had Jim Crow laws. Come on now.
He's not on Japan's "ballz" man. Have you ever even been to Japan? I'm black and i've been there twice, and people out there are VERY respectful and mostly keep to themselves. I've caught a couple people staring at me in the city but i think it's because i'm an enigma to them. Once i see they usually look away, but Japanese people have been nothing but respectful to me and even take time out of their day to help me get to where i need to go on trains and explain things to me in their bad english or my bad japanese hahha
I copied my comment from another thread. Japan as a whole is close minded country. YOU HAVE TO LIVE AND WORK THERE TO UNDERSTAND. Being a tourist or a visitor doesn't make you see the real Japan. They don't like foreigners. They tolerate you, but they don't respect you. I've pretty much lived in the Japanese culture for almost 10 years. Japanese people are one of the most racist people I've ever met. Yes, there are lifetime friends you can make, but Japan is a racist country.
I've been yelled at by some old Japanese man cause I'm with my Japanese GF.
I've been denied entry to places because I'm a Gai-Jin/Foreigners.
I've been.....I don't know how to describe it ....ignored straight to my face. Make it seem like you're nothing.
I've been given the shoulder so many times but Japanese person next to me gets acknowledge.
People forget that women are still 2nd class. Gai-Jin/Foreigner are lesser. The treat Gai-Jins like dogs.
Japanese people don't hang around Gai-jin. because "Its a bad image ".
You ever notice that? Foreigners hanging out with other Foreigners but not Japanese locals? Go check all these Japanese youtube channels. All their friends are other Foreigners. Japanese are not open to Foreigners "for the most part".
How would you feel if you're not invited to company events just cause you're a Gai-Jin staff?
How would you feel if your company goes on a company vacation trip and leaves you out?
I like the positivity of the video, but there are some Asians that only recognize black people for dancing, rapping, music, which is fine, but recognize us as professionals also, well educated doctors, lawyers, ceo's, teachers, business owners, etc. We are much more than dancing and rapping. I can say, maybe some things are slowly changing, but there's still a little bit to go regarding black people.
Yeah, but the USA media doesn't respect us as those things so they do not see it.
@Andre Knowledge357 well it seems that Nigerians as well as other Black African, Black Caribbean immigrants and other non black immigrants compete well with Asians and perform better than white and black Americans academically. So your IQ is more about your culture than your race.
Your point is very right
Wow how low is your standard and judgment. The ignorance I don’t even know. It is possible you act like no one in the top universities are black or that there aren’t black academic individuals out there. You must have very low self esteem because if you’re thinking their standard is too high and you stereotypically look at the black community and state it’s not possible then YOU have an issue.
Dude, are you being serious right now. Nobody anywhere thst isnt delusiomal doesnt even need to waste their time to know that the number of blacks in top universities is prob as low or lower ss the amount of blacks that actuallly graduate or end up going to ANY form of higher learning. This isnt fictional Wakanda from Black Panther, lol.

Yes great insight, especially the bit about people abroad believing stereotypes about African Americans, until they get to know one of us in person. When I visited South Korea, some guy thought I was Will Smith. Another person thought I might be a rapper, and was surprised to learn I'm a software engineer and I'm into rock climbing. Those situations were cake compared to what I deal with in America. I would rather be mistaken for Will Smith or a rapper, than get stopped and frisked by the NYPD because I was walking while black in the wrong part of New York.
Major Sapp III interesting

Major Sapp III excellent comment, great summary of american experience.

That is not the American experience, have it happened to certain people? Yes. But that is not the experience black people deal with in our country

I visited Japan with three other black people (American, Canadian, South African). We absolutely loved it. Tokyo, till we meet again.
@salma ahmed if you live in the states or in Europe it’s no more racist than there
That dude from Ghana was realistic, "When in Rome do as Romans do." I think people in general these days need to start doing that way more, people from Arab nations travel to other countries and insist on trying to implement Sharia law, Americans go to other countries and have a reputation for not trying to communicate in the local language.
Sharia law haha bitch stop watching too much fox news
Well as he said Americans are not known for not trying to communicate the local language but certainly well known for giving freedom to thousands of Iraq Libya giving helping hand to Vietnam couldn't live without America WAKE up you dumbass American
I think part of that falls into the immigrant mentality. since I was young, people always told me to fit in and not stand out, so I rejected my culture. but now I've known to be proud of it while accepting others
As a Mozambican living in Kyoto, this was great!
Loved this!
Some really good points were mentioned like when Will said that as black people we need to do a better job at painting a picture of ourselves. The representation of black people that the Japanese see are all from the media, so it's easy to create stereotypes and apply them to all black people that come to japan, when in reality we are all so diverse. I think there's a lot of opportunity in Japan for black people to bring exposure on how multifaceted the culture is - especially since the Japanese are so open to learning and appreciating.
And this is the same for black people going to japan; it's key for us to immerse ourselves in their culture. Like Lee said ' When you go to Rome, do what the Romans do'.
mensa yes that is a profound internal statement.
You must understand that American media portrays our image.
And we suffer a bad blowback from decades of propaganda biases as far back as the 90s and still today we constantly argue.
Black excellence and social media is changing that and also worsening.
It's not really our job. You can't blame the victims for ignorance/racism. Those who believe or portray the stereotypes are at fault. The media should treat people equal but that isn't just on black people to do.
Amina J It's not entirely our job but who better to represent black people...than black people themselves?
You can't blame the victims for ignorance/racism but they're are at fault for believing it? ( I didn't understand that part)
The media doesn't represent us at all and when they do, it's usually quite negative/stereotypical- fair enough. But even when black people represent themselves in the media, it's not a one size fits all. We're not all like what they see on TV, we live different lives as black people which is why I said that it's also our job to put our diversity for them to see.
It's either they see one perspective from the media or several from more of us putting ourselves out there.
mensa mensa I see what you're saying definitely agree that the spectrum of blackness should be shown and our narratives could definitely be portrayed better if more of us played a role in the media that's produced and made a conscious effort to shape our portrayals better. When I said we can't blame victims of the media (black people) and they're (non black people who apply racist stereotypes to every black person they encounter) at fault for believing it, I meant that YES the media portrays badly and YES more of us should be given the opportunity to tell our stories, there is still a level of accountability that non black people have and that the media have. I think the issue is less about us needing to portray ourselves well and more about us being given the opportunity to do so and also the majority white producers of the media doing right by minorities. So I don't entirely disagree with what you're saying when it comes to the media, I just think the focus should be directed towards what I mentioned before. We also can't control the Japanese media as it's very homogenous so that's not something black People can change or even should focus on. For example, South Korean media had a show where they'd do blackface and portray stereotypes of black people for fun. I don't think the response to things like that is that WE need to work on representing ourselves better since its largely not even up to us. I do agree with a lot of what you said though and I might have misconstrued some things 😂
That King next to the queen was so wellspoken! love it.

I've been living in japan for a while now. It always makes me laugh how "I'm moving to Japan" to people means "I'm going to Tokyo." Way more to this place than that little tourist trap of a place. Ant Date Sure! Not that one adventure fits all kinda thing but if you wanna see old Japan, check out shirakawa go if it's in the winter. Might see it covered in snow which is beautiful. Exactly, absolutely. I was in Japan for 2 weeks, but Tokyo for only three days. Saw Semboku, Sendai, Kobe, Nara, Hiroshima, Fukuoka and Ayase. Japan is more than just anime and Tokyo, and Black Culture is not defined by hiphop/rap. Like the comment above said: Do all Black people write bars? Nothing against hiphop-I love her almost as much as I love the Blues-but let's stop looking for the smallest denominator when defining something as vital as a culture. Great video.

I love that black people in Japan are working hard to set a good reputation and help their own community. If more black people did this in the US instead of bitching about racism it would be a much better place for all. Even in a country like the US where being black is not a rarity many Americans still don't understand black culture which is very diverse. To be accepted by people who are different than you, you have to assimilate your environment and depict the best of your culture. That's how you break down racial barriers.

I think learn about their culture and their language even a bit will help. Racism is exist in everywhere but if you notice, there are some african festivals held in Japan, like Nigerian Festival, Jamaican festival etc. You can check it on youtube.
same idk what to do it‘s my dream to go there someday but I‘m scared
@@aichalo6326
Don't be so nervous, please. We Japanese are just shy and can't speak well with foreigner from around the world, but most of us don't have the idea of racism. If you will come to Japan, its better remember a few Japanese sentence.
ペンぐウィン that‘s so nice to hear thank you so much
Dont be insecure black is beautiful
black hiphop culture fused with japanese culture is one of the best things ever. loved Samurai Champloo, nujabes
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I’d disagree
Great documentary. I was in Tokyo Japan for 11 days last month stayed in Shinjuku and loved everything & every min of it. Everyone I spoke to was very cordial. Made me come home and really began study the language. Going back in June 2018😊💛
J Gary where did you stay? Is there a website that’s good to research?
Alicen Robinson we used booking.com but here is the direct website for hotel & they do speak English www.mystays.com/en-us/hotel-mystays-nishi-shinjuku-tokyo/ but keep in mind the hotel rooms there is very very small, small like cruise ship cabin room small😄 but didnt mind we hardly was in the room anyway. It was in the heart of Toyko, walking distance from subway loads n loads of shops and endless food options. Lawsons, Family Mart and 7-11 jus steps away great snacks NOT i repeat NOT like the 7-11 here in the States it's a thousand times better. For our air fare we booked through ANA airlines. Oh and google translate was our best friend😄 And check out Toyko Hands, its 9 💞😍 levels of shopping & connected to a 14 level sky mall the 2nd floor of Sky mall is makeup heaven. Hope this helps.
Ah! I am so happy to see your comment! I am so happy to hear you had a great time in my city and hope you will enjoy your stay in June even more! I am a Japanese girl from Shibuya, Tokyo:) Good luck on your studying! Thank you for your love and Japan loves you!
phil phil there are no bigger gangsters on planet earth than the white man. learn some history, you racist slob.
I love Shinjuku...great for the 30+ crowd and great energy. But really there wasn't one part of Tokyo that I didn't love.
I really loved the shit out of this! My brother is interested in moving to Japan so to see another Ghanaian man and African woman thriving in Japan lets us know we can do it. Thank you for this!
They don't really want little stinky Ghanians moving to Japan. Trust me.
Marky Mark yup
+Marky Mark that's a very prejudice remark.
Homie the Asiatic race is of the most racist people on the planet!
They don't want to mix with anyone! They rather see their culture fade into nothing than to mix.
Don't feel bad they hate whites just as much!
The Chinese, Japanese and Thai people are really strict about their race mixing with others!
100% true, i worked with alot of Thai people and they said they were scared of white/black people when growing up because their parents told them to be scared.
This is amazing. Looking forward to more videos on experiences all over the world. Thank you so much!!
Wanted to visit Japan all my life, and now I finally have a chance. Got a internship and really excited to go, really glad I found this video. Much Respect!
@Jordan Fernandez It was unforgettable Although, I had many rough days due to the language barrier and expenses. In my stay I got to visit many different areas of Tokyo, Including Various Bar's (Some Clubs) Due to my internship. Although I would recommend whatever you have saved up for a trip definitely save a bit more.
Khadeem Gēmā Me and my girlfriend were planning on going what do you recommend?
@@hakibaro1221 Well that's a tough one lol, But I have a few places I can recommend.
PLUSTOKYO (Located In Ginza) Really professional bar/restaurant if your into that kind of thing.
LAPIS TOKYO (Located In Chuo City) This is more of a Dance Club but the atmosphere really dope!
Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden (Located in you guessed it! Shinjuku) Garden area with a greenhouse perfect for sight seeing with your girlfriend!
Meguro River Park (Located In Meguro) Bro you gotta go there for the Cherry Blossoms!!
There so much more but lol I'd be here for days hit me up though if you want any more info!

Hahaha, That made my day lol, I wish we had a United States of Africa
Caught that too! Ghanian's are my favorite United States of Africans haha
Adjoa N lol 😂 I actually wish that existed
Adjoa N hahahha “United States of Africa” what is that suppose to mean? degrading the rest of Africa.
I love how ghanians usually recognize and respect African Americans , their privileges and achievements.
I believe all african Americans can in fact return to Ghana according to policy.
This was a very positive video for me. As an older black woman who grew up in the military lifestyle, I traveled a lot and my father was stationed in Hawaii. While living there, I had Japanese teachers and friends as well as many other nationalities. I had a great experience and many happy childhood memories. I believed it shaped my attraction to Asian culture in general. I still hope to visit Japan as well as Korea and China. This video is giving me the confidence to pursue that desire.
I found this video because I'm planning a 2 week trip to Japan. Great video!!
How did it go?
How messed up is it that the guy from the US instinctively got defensive about the term "black music". That's how bad and tense racial relations are here in America.
@Book How racist are you? Last time I checked It was the white americans hatin on everyone else to get out of "their country" which they obtained through massacre and slaughter of the indigenous people, then built the infrastructure on the backs of black and chinese slavery.
I'm sorry but I'm tired of black people making excuses for passive racism. Were the only ones preaching to forgive people meanwhile everyone disrespects us.
This made me cry. I mean I was already crying. (Emotions) but anyways this made me cry in such a good way . I never really felt I got anywhere. Being light skinned. Mexican and black. I don't speak Spanish and I wasn't (black enough) I always fit into the Asian group at school even if I sucked at my school work. They were kind and welcoming. My closest friend didn't even speak a lick of English! XD I taught her and she tried teaching me. I loved it because we were not connected by words but by something I don't think we understood at the time.
get an irish passport we'l adopt ya ☺
You can be dark skinned black and still not be black enough for some people. Some people want to live by the stereotypes. Keep shining bright like a diamond.
Bless your powerful soul!
It would be different in other places. My moms side of the family is from New Orleans and everyone is so light. So I have to be honest I've always preferred light skin girls.
bless your soul, your non-english speaking friend probably had a real hard time before you taught him/her
I like this. The more we learn each others culture and values the more we we can all share in the human experience. Brilliant!

I've had an interest in Japan since I was 15. My highschool didnt offer japanese classes so I taught myself. I didn't know you could live/work in Japan until I found out about the Jet program. Before that I was told there's no reason for a black person to be there/they don't want us. After finding Jet I spent weeks researching. For the last 3 years I've been working toward getting there. I want to expand not only my mind but my childrens. I want them to see things a different way from how I grew up. Its been hard but I'm gonna make sure I make it, if not for me, for them.
That’s a lie, my mom’s friend and husband are black and having been living and working in Japan for 3 years now.

Dude, you're cringe as fuck. Stfu already.

Loved this. Opened my eyes more to what I want, and how I want to get it.
I visited Japan September 2016 and I loved it. The people were so inquisitive, not in a bad way, but just wanted to know me and where I came from. There is truth in when you open up and show interest in their culture, they are very inviting. From the small amount of Japanese I learned, Opened many doors for conversation. People would smile and exert Joy from my attempts to speak Japanese. I really loved Japan and would definitely consider it when it comes to living abroad.
I have been wanting to go Japan for a long time with similar reasons to the rapper in this doc, but was scared due to the expectation that I would be the only foreigner there but this has really inspired me and motivated me to go out to Japan. Great stuff!
Ugh, we need a part 2! 😩🙌💛
I love this so much! It's so positive and uplifting. I love the narrative that we need to be the ones showing the world who we are. That's a big part of why I want to move to Japan. I want to share that being black doesn't just mean one thing. I want to show Japan just how awesome black women are! I'm learning Japanese and I hope to be able to move there within the year. As an artist I feel like there's potentially a lot I could accomplish by being there. I hope so anyway. This has inspired me even more!
I also really love the comment about how people say they have a hard time working in Japan yet they don't even bother to learn the language... It's kind of essential to be able to communicate with people and have meaningful relationships to, you know, speak the same language. Haha.
Anyway, thanks for making this lovely uplifting video. I hope to join the ranks of these wonderful people soon!
Japanese don’t care about color of the skin but they do care how one acts and behave. When you try to fit this difference into how some people claim as racism, that is somewhat strange to Japanese people. Japan can not be explained when one has western mind set thus one need to see for themselves with open mind.
Dante The Demon Slayer Exactly, then again any nation don’t want foreigner to destroy their country I’m sure. What I was trying to say is it’s not color of skin or nationality that matters but certain ideologies, western political correctness confuses Japanese. And some people call that racism. Japanese does not(well most of them) think diversity is strength but unity is, not by color of skin nor nationality. Individualism is not something Japanese are found of. But unfortunately western ideologies are spreading fast in japan.
false. japanese are some of the most racists people on earth, they just won't say it to your face. there's more xenophobia in japan than most countries and it's the only modern country that shops can still put up signs that say "no foreigners".
these blacks are only tolerated because they're there in japan in small numbers. if the community grows, your little fairy tale will implode larger than the space shuttle challenger.
VvVincent Have you ever been there?
keithtko yes i have, several times. my brother is married to a japanese woman and they go back every year. i've gone with them several times. this perfectly explains the japanese mentality: ua-cam.com/video/YEjqSCjDVjY/v-deo.html#t=23m04s
VvVincent Too bad you feel this way. I’m Japanese American and feel sad some people feel the way you do. But seeing many videos on UA-cam expressing positive feeling toward Japan and do not think Japanese are no more racist than any other race assures me most of people do not feel the way you do.
Watching this makes me want to travel & learn everyone's ways & cultures

@@dangda-ww7de has anyone seen my left snare?
Most foreigners who say it's discrimination don't try to learn Japanese. too selfish. Even simple words are fine. After all, I want people to speak the language of that country, and I feel a sense of closeness to people who can speak it. What would you do if someone kept speaking to you in Chinese? English is the common language, but not all Japanese speak it fluently. Foreigners are rare in the countryside, but there are many Japanese who like foreigners, and it's just that many elderly people have a bad image.
I'm an African-American guy. Her name was Mrs. Payne & she was my 5th grade teacher. She delivered a presentation to my class of a vacation with friends. In that country day/time were different, books were read from right to left, seating was in the floor, women were dressed in kimono and there was a special mountain called Fuji. It stayed with me as a young adult. Finally, in 2004 I made the first of 3 trips there & I felt so at home each time. While in Hiroshima, I stood on a bridge & remembered my teacher: " I made it, Mrs. Payne." I proclaimed, "I'm in Japan."
I really like this. thank you for representing our culture without making it look like a bad stereotype.
@DFS54 what about white cops planting drugs in in people car and what about cops killing black everyday tell me that oh yeah ok stay silent then 🐖

But they inadvertently become a Stereotype by complaining about No Black Culture in a Country that has its own culture. How about they become Japanese instead of looking for them to represent their American Black Culture...
@James D.H. That's insane for you to say that. American Black people speak Wildly about their culture and is very prominent within their communities. If you don't acknowledge that, then maybe You're the racist...
Edit: Yes, we are all Americans and I would die today for that right for us to live together. But we are definitely different people within our Society - good or bad.
Loved this! It had a lighthearted feel to it. The production quality was amazing! In Japan one will find that the experiences of black people living here will vary. About two months ago, we released a documentary about the black experience in Japan. We wanted to delve deep and unravel the totality of the black experience in Japan. The documentary is definitely worth the watch, as there are a lot of things that people divulge that aren't usually shared. Congratulations on the work that you have put out, we definitely need more videos like this coming to the fore.

Great insight! The human condition is one of cultural/social collaboration--as long as respect, decency, and appreciation is in the air, we can coexist. Amarachi Nwosu did a great job with this project. Made me nostalgic about my time in South Korea--I found similarities after visiting Tokyo and Osaka, but Japan, as whole, was far more experimental than South Korea.
its funny its cool when asian do it but if white do it we stealing ur culture -
key brize Japanese people study and respects it. They have a love for Black culture. When most white people do it it's because it's there here cool thing and then you have the bunch that do it too be racist then claim their not. Get it together
I literally wrote in my initial comment that "as long as respect, decency, and appreciation is in the air, we can coexist." That goes for black artist dabbling in East Asian aesthetic (see Wu Tang), Asian artists dabbling in black aesthetic, and the historical coexistence of black and white artist in the same artistic space (Read what Jimi Hendrix went through and google "Blue-eyed soul").
Black and white artist have a history of both positive collaboration AND systemic instances of black cultural products receiving more credit/awards by white mainstream audiences when a white artist performs it. That's NOT my opinion, that's a historical fact. That's certainly the case with the erasure of Chuck Berry in the American consciousness, techno (started in black Detroit), house (started in black Chicago), and even "rock" is now considered a "white genre" of music too many Americans.
When we discuss specific instances of cultural appropriation, we're talking about the black narrative and backstory being stripped away. This video clearly shows how you can appreciate ones culture without acting like YOU created it or erasing the very existence of black from it -OR- performing a mockery of blackness
There was a huge difference in how Hip Hop responds to the brilliant Eminem (his lyrical skills, authentic backstory and true investment in the culture, etc) versus Iggy Azalea. Now, stop virtue-signaling and trying to make whiteness a "victim" without first adding context and doing your due diligence. Research.
+key brize Nah, it's never stealing if you respect it. Look at Eminem. He gets mad respect. Why? Because he KNOWS and respects the artists that brought the music to him. He admires black rappers.
Some Asians also get talked about for cultural appropriation. Look at what happened to Henry Lau when he dropped "I'm good". There were plenty of people saying he was appropriating black culture. They said the same thing about 2ne1's CL.
BUT not all black people find offense to the same things. I don't personally care if you want to try something new, even if you don't know much about it, but don't go disrespecting black people, saying things to make them seem inferior at the same time. Give respect where it's due, and there won't be any problems. There are some white people who will dress in hip-hop attire and rap, but then say "Black people are ugly" or "No one likes black people." You have to deem black people inferior in order for me to take offense. But wouldn't anyone take offense to that?
It’s a trip 🍄🤙🏽
Moving to Tokyo in February and this was good to see. I appreciate the post and I hope to run into one of you guys somewhere! Praise and thanks.

If you and others got dual citizenship it would not be your beloved Japan for long. Comprende? If you love it you let it be as it is: without you. The only way to keep it.
@@editfazekas3854 I'm going to assume that means something along the lines of Japan is not only not the sort of country to allow dual citizenship, the people over there do not want that for their country.

I think its very interesting that the man pointed out that AFRICAN AMERICANS can travel to japan easier.
Thats because not only that we reside in America and have the privilege of its foreign affairs.
But the musical scene and our history in general of being the 1st black people to travel abroad.
Our musicans, politicians, humanitarians, and athletes have broken down the first barriers. Weve have had intellectual Renaissance and a nationalist movement (blk and proud)
And back then set out to combat the evil white supremacist stereotypical propaganda.
African american history is very unique to black history and i see alot of anti african american from africans and other black people (not here).
The worse part is they'll resort to white supremacist points and ideologies that parallels with poor whites ," at least im not black attitude."
They'll do something like marginalize our current state but forget we integrated the world basically.
We get frustrated because we expect other blacks to know the settings of the system but african Americans must understand that our history of stuggles is something to be in awe about and we are still fighting.
African Americans are special weather anyone will admit it or not and they have represented the mother continent very very well.
All africans should be proud of fellow African Americans and follow into pan africanism.
The acknowledgement that all blacks( some dont go by black) including in the diaspora are the same and act accordingly.
Jean Mitsuhirato I dont know how true that statement is.... well, consider the fact that they know/knew their own people sold them into slavery.
Brandon Sparkman I really can’t say you’ve represented us well. We aren’t as violent, we don’t take crack and cocaine. Watch pranks of people going up to Africans asking for a fight and trying to instigate them. I live in America so I know what I’m talking about. You all try to represent the culture but not the ideals
Japan is in my top 3 places I’ve ever been to! Felt more confutable being black and walking through Tokyo than I do in London! Even saw a Japanese guy with dreads!
woah lol
Where are your other two top places?
In Japan many landlords refuse to let their property to foreigners, any foreigners.
They associate them with late rent( which is something unheard of for most Japanese), disregard of local rules(not sorting out rubbish correctly, partying or play loud music, not take your shoes off inside the property which may damage the flooring etc) also language barrier.
Do what the Japanese Do, I like that!
