Budget Vs High End Bikepacking Setup - How Much Do You Need To Spend?
Вставка

- In this video I was joined by Ross as we set out to see if you can get out and enjoy a bikepacking trip on a limited budget. We first began by acquiring a new bike. After a little searching on Facebook marketplace we found a bike that seemed ideal, a Raleigh Pioneer 120 which we believe dates from the late 90’s or early 00’s. After completing a little basic maintenance on the bike we set off on a one night trip in a nice area local to where we live. I used the new bike with a cheap bikepacking setup, and I set Ross up with all of my nice, high end, bikepacking and lightweight camping equipment that I have acquired over the years, and which make up my current bikepacking setup for long distance tours.
Over the course of the trip I assess how the cheap setup compares with the more expensive setup that I am used to, and we share our thoughts on what you need to get into bikepacking, and where best to spend your money.

Just finished watching your GDMBR trip for third time. The most wonderful version on the tube. The way you speak to the camera is different than all others, it's like you are having a conversation with me ( the viewer ) , not all mundane and factoid like. Wonderful editing by Ross as well. You truly make the trip look spectacular. Thank you again for this contribution.
Thanks. I love seeing comments like this. I'm glad you liked it. I can't do the whole fake narrative thing. There's no point. Thanks for watching 👍
People are often “over-biked” like they are over-everything-elsed. Last year I bought an old Moulton Stowaway for a song, and had a lot of fun stripping off the old paint and rust, applying a new coat of British Racing Green paint, and upgrading the stem, brake, and saddle. The rest of the bike, including the 2 speed rear hub were left original. I find this bike to be an excellent commuter, and with it’s front and rear racks, would be a good bikepacking rig. I remember a story of Brit who took Stowaway on a round-the-world tour, only to have the bike stolen in Australia. He ended up settling there (I guess he couldn’t get away without his bike), and, as far as I know, is still there today.
I could easily get into bike restorations. Maybe in the future. Great story about the Brit settling in Australia. It's amazing how fate works. Cheers 👍
A worthwhile video that. Not everyone can afford the best of the best. So proof you don’t need to spend a fortune to have some cycle camping trips. Go with what you have.
I completely agree. I honestly think you could tackle any road or gravel route with that set up. I was impressed.
I had a Raleigh Record 10 speed that I bought from working a paper route back in the mid 70's in SE Wisconsin. I loved that bike sooooo much. I did charity runs with it. Rode back and forth to town. It was so nice. Until somebody stole it. That was a heart break! Fine simple machine. Then I bought a Triumph Bonneville and things were better!
You seem to have a loyalty to British two wheelers. Sad to hear your Raleigh was stolen. Do you still have the Bonneville?
@@matryderadventures I sold that a while ago. Back in the 70's we had a Raleigh shop in the next town. It was either a Schwinn, Kent or Raleigh. Easy choice. Then everyone and their brother (and sister) in Wisconsin had Harley's. I have always turned from the crowds. It feels better. Besides the Triumph sounds better (pop, pop, pop downshifting) and is zippy quick.
I’m going on a bikepacking weekend on my Raleigh Pioneer Trail on Saturday. 😊 we’re camping in Appletreewick.
Awesome. Good luck 👍
I work at a bike shop on the Oregon Coast and a guy came thru on a Mongoose cargo bike, riding north, on his way to a job in Vancouver BC. He was making it work, and thats part of the adventure. Course he was 22 and when your 22 you can really handle pushing your body to the limit.
That's awesome. It's amazing how even the simplest of bikes can get you almost anywhere. I am fascinated by cargo bikes.
You guys are having a good time, gorgeous weather too. Can you wild camp in England? I have stealth camp on my bike tours but it's not lawful here in Florida or not really anywhere on the East Coast. Heading to my bike tour next week to Connecticut and I plan to camp also, can't wait 😊 Have a great time out there, thanks for sharing I enjoyed watching.
It was a great ride. You can't officially wild camping in England or Wales, but can in Scotland. I think that adhering tomthe 'Leave no trace' principle is reasonable. Have fun in Connecticut.
Great video boys, you make me giggle 😂
Looks like you had great fun together .
Roll on the next one😊
excellent video thank you very much
Thanks for watching. I'm glad you liked it.
Awesome little video
Nice to see other people doing bikepacking on the cheap just as I
But you two at least have friends
I can tell you right now from experience for over 48 years not one family member has gone mountain biking or bikepacking or camping in general not even fishing or hiking
Glad to see that you two are out and about doesn't like good friends hanging out
And your area is much more colorful than mine with history
Take care you too see you on the flip side
Glad you liked it. I definitely don't take my good friends for granted. I'm very lucky. Cheers.
Superb stuff!I love old bikes, some of the old Raleigh bikes are a joy if you are prepared to put a bit of work in, I love riding an old Raleigh racer, a blast from the past, minimalist. Lovely video and some super scenery at a leisurely pace, spot on!. I never cease to be amazed at how variable car drivers are towards a bike, you are very exposed on a bike to cars / vans etc. Not exactly a big ask to respect other road users and give a bit of space to a much smaller road user. Thanks for sharing, happy riding!
I really enjoyed that bike. It's going to get a lot more use. Such a nice bike to ride. I think bikes are seen as a nuisance by a lot of people. I hate to say it, but when I was younger (and stupider) I felt a bit like that. Thankfully, most road users are considerate. Cheers.
@@matryderadventures Yes super bikes, and relatively simple to work on. Re the road use. I think being seen is important, decent hiviz colours as you use. All best.
I very much enjoyed this episode, I laughed along with you guys. Such a blessing to have each other as friends and creating memories! Hope you get to have many more.
Always looking forward to your next adventure 🚴🏻♀️🤍🌟
Thanks Kevin. I'm glad you liked this one. We always have a good laugh when we're out. Cheers.
Ross looks like the love child of Ramsay Bolton and Johnny Knoxsville, that's not a bad thing😊
He's not quite as evil as Ramsay....
Fun video gentlemen. Hope you enjoyed your coffee😅😅😅
We did. Cheers Scott 👍👍👍
such a fun ride with a peaceful pace. I do really enjoy this video.
Thanks. That's nice to hear. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching 👍
"Dunno what kind of cow that is..."
"That's a Ribeye."
Lost opportunity there...
Definitely. I'll use it in a future video 🤣. Cheers 👍
The history and legends are rich with you guys
There are legends wherever you go in the UK.
Great mini adventure. Lovely part of the country. Take care
Thanks. That whole Dedham Vale area is stunning.
I looked it up. It's a steel frame. The ones with alloy wheels were better than the ones with steel rims apparently, What would we do without internet
Thanks. It's a.really nice bike, but may have a bent fork. If it's steel, I imagine it can be repaired. Cheers.
Cheers guys brilliant video 👍
Thanks Pat 👍👍
Very enjoyable & amusing video . ..👍
Thanks. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching 👍
I have a Raleigh Pioneer Hybrid, from new, for 24 years. Still do multi day camping trips regularly. Never let me down. I had a motor added a few years ago as I’m getting old now. 30-40 miles a day. 21 gears. Steel frame, a ton weight, but indestructible.
I am a fan already. It's such a nice bike. I'm already planning more trips on it. It's amazing how little you have to spend to get a great bike. Cheers 👍
Old guys rule. My BPB is 25 years old now
They were built to last.
Derailleurs on a cheap or expensive bike packing bikes are nightmare as they are Flintstones technology. The best is a Rohloff IHG or Pinion gear box either with Gates belt drive which work perfectly mile after mile.
I have a Pinion gearbox on the bike I took on the GDMBR. I'm a huge fan. I can't justify having two though. I'm hoping the derailleur will perform well enough on the TransAm.
Gorgeous scenery on this route! The lack of concern for cyclist safety is alarming - glad you had some back roads and lanes to enjoy. Your dinner looked amazing. (Btw - Teton Pass will be open by end of of next week, albeit with a sharper curve and steeper grade on the detour.)
That steak was incredible..I'm hungry just thinking about it. Thanks for the info. Cheers.
Well done boys sorry not been around as much Matt got a new job so been towing away Atb Coops 👍🏻🍻🍻🚴🚴
Hi Coops. You're forgiven!!! I hope the new job is going well. Cheers 👍
Love your videos. They are always fun, especially when Ross is included. It was very good of you to allow him some outside time; he really seemed to appreciate it. I think you could probably let him out more often seeing as how he made no attempt to run off.
Keep up the good work. I am very much looking forward to following your TransAm ride. Have you been researching and watching other people's videos or do you prefer to go at it without preconceptions?
I'm glad you enjoy these videos. He didn't run off, this time. He knows what happens when I catch him l, and I always do 🤣🤣.
I would watch other people's videos, but I haven't found much. I'm surprised as it's such a well known route. Thanks for following along. Less than one month to go before I set off now. Cheers 👍
@@matryderadventures Not sure if this went through the first time I wrote it, but here goes again: try having a peek at Sara Dickey's Transamerica tour on UA-cam, albeit she went East to West. There are an amazing number of free camping and indoor accommodations along the route. Cheers!
Love your videos. It’s not just GB, I got the finger from a driver yesterday, Florida. I think large road bike groups blocking traffic might be a problem, although seems safer to ride in a pack.
It seems to be a worldwide problem. It's a real shame.
Mat, it wasn’t steak and beer on the GDMBR, more like noodles with beef jerky, washed down with Gaterade(if you were lucky)😂 Happy Trails.
Hi Tim. Yes. This was a lot nicer. I don't want to get used to it. I'll be back to trail food again soon enough.
Loved the video definitely won't try bike packing my self.
🤣 glad you liked it. Cheers 👍
New camera is really beautiful.
Thanks for letting me know. I need to learn how to use it properly now.
In the desert, you need something beneath that air mattress, or it will get punctured. Take a small lightweight cheap tent footprint, even when not using a tent, and it will save your air mattress from failure.
Excellent suggestion. Thanks for the tip. Cheers 👍
I saw there a town over there called Burbage The adventure there is Rock climbing
I wonder if the fork is bent back some, might be a good idea to inspect them closely, out of the frame.
yeah the fork is def bent.
You could be right, looking at photos online the Raleigh pioneer did have curved forks, as a lot of older bikes did, but it does seem just from looking at the thumbnail that there's quite a sharp bend on mine. I will be sure to check it properly tomorrow. Thanks for commenting 👍
I see the bend at the fork crown, worst possible area.
Came here to say the same thing 👍
It needs work. Hopefully we can repair it. I couldn't tell by riding it.
Not a bad find,
It seems like a nice bike. You can't really go wrong for the price.
Is it the new camera that's playing at 1.25 speed or are you just trying to cram more content in a shorter time frame? Enjoyed the content.
I don't think any shots should have been at a higher speed, although I am still learning the new camera so I could have done something with it by accident, I didn't notice it myself when watching back though. Thanks for commenting.
Seem to speed up around the 12:50 mark
Over here in Australia, doesn't matter how old or decrepit your bike is, there'll always be some Bum that'll steal it if it not locked to anything.....but the ones who look n steal for nice exxy bikes come equipped with the right tools. Nothing is safe!!
It's a real shame. I hate leaving any of my bikes anywhere busy. Cities are definitely a no go area. It shouldn't be like this. Cheers 👍
Road from Carshalton to Brighton 1971 But on return journey going past Sutton Rail Station my Front wheel departed my frame not Good
Definitely not good. I hope it didn't put you off...
Were those Suffolk Browns very small or far away?
Ahhhh...Father Ted. I'm inspired to watch them all again. You should too. Go on go on go on.
I really fancy a steak now.
Treat yourself Bro.
oh my god... how did you manage to get liam gallagher to cohost :)
🤣🤣
When does trans American ride start?
I fly to Oregon on July 22nd.
