Did he seriously say he biked a 100 miles the first day and was going to do 25 or 40 more to find a campground? In the gravel, in 30 degrees, stopping for meals, ….. yeah I’m calling Cap. He may be a beast but I think there’s some exaggeration here too.
I spent about 25 years (1980 - 2005) cycling all over the lower peninsula, and northern Indiana. Aside from dozens of t-shirt rides, I've ridden 8 DAMLAC's and I have ridden probably 6-8 full pack trips from my home (at the time, about 20 miles NW of Lansing), to Mackinaw City. This was back before GPS. I thought it was cool to have folded paper county maps to plan my trip with. I rode a Fuji touring bike (don't recall the model) and eventually transitioned to a recumbent. Those trips were some of the best experiences of my life. I truly miss cycling like that. You miss so much traveling at 70mph.
My wife and I drove our grandkids along the back roads you took between Marquette and Lance with our pit stop at Mt. Arvon. Beautiful country for sure. Thank you so much for sharing your adventure.
Nice video, as a long distance, bicycle tourist 58 years old I’ve done many trips, even while I was your age, but I never did that kind of mileage over and over again I think you just overcook to your body to where it couldn’t recover enough to be fresh the next day . A lot of wattage spent pushing through some of those loose dirt roads, then getting off and trudging through the woods. Try some good quality bib shorts to hold your privates in place better to avoid the sting. All the movement was irritating . causing a little inflammation . Maybe more just pure water. I had Achilles tendinitis and custom orthotics helped cure it up. . Nice interstellar music during the bear Pass.😂. Thanks for taking us on your adventure.
Thanks for documenting this. You did about a hundred things I wouldn't do: going off-trail, attempting to cover so much ground, powering through medical issues, challenging a mama bear and her cubs in any way, shape form, or fashion, apparently not having offline maps with GPS, just to name a few...but you made it work (in a way). My approach is slow and steady, being equipped with all the necessities to camp anywhere (wild camping), and stopping to smell the roses...but to each his or her own, and your journey was very interesting to watch. Thanks for sharing.
didn’t catch this at first and then wondered, “is this the same guy who posted the marji gesick video that iwatched the other day?”. it is the same guy
Wow absolutely WOW. I'm from Sault Ste Marie Ontario and seeing all that epic riding thru mud atv trails and conditions. You are a BEAST and Strong what power and determination. LOVED THIS VIDEO ..Raw.
I am from Michigan LP (West MI area) we don't have the elevation the UP has or the bears, but I can fully relate to the slow sandy two tracks you ended up on many times in this video. Sweet video by the way and man I would love to do a trip like this some time.
Love the ride bro! I grew up in mulligan plains near the confluence of the dead river. It was great to see you ride past my driveway! That’s where I learned to ride a bike. Also, that yellow bridge is very new! I’m gonna head out to camp and ride up that way, been a few years.
Awesome video dude! A little tip, just take your bike in the store with you. I shop in all kinds of stores, Walmart included, with my bike right by my side. I’ve never had anyone say anything to me. Much better peace of mind than stashing it and hoping for the best.
That was an exciting adventure to watch. You did some hard core root hogging. I’m glad you updated everyone on your condition after the trip. I was worried you had developed a UTI.
Yeah spring sucks because of the soft terrain and meltwater, but summer is no joke lol. I guess it would be incentive to pedal fast and not stop! I have much better luck cycling in mid-September to mid-October, plus you get to see the leaves turn as well. I prefer colder weather though so might be a bit chilly for some.
Nice! Thank you for posting, I’m living vicariously through you as I recover from surgery. I have an ancient cyclocross but I miss riding. What tires do you have? What’s your pack weight? So many questions I’d like to ask.
Now THAT was a major amount of bushwhacking. Sheesh! I am impressed by your endurance and resolve. And I thought I was cool for climbing over fallen trees on railtrails. lol
I live around Traverse City, what a beautiful peace of the world. You've got such a legit set-up man! If you're ever around NW Lower Peninsula, check out Glacial Hills in Bellaire and Avalanche in Boyne City! They're awesome paths that were carved by glaciers forever ago, and have amazing bends and swoops that lead to hills that feel like you're zooming on a rollercoaster on them! So satisfying!
I bikepacked the MORE routes LP 2&3 a couple weeks ago. It was a blast. Wondering about how the UP sections are. Quite wild! Glad you got past that momma bear okay!
Another great adventure! A little bit of Marji, Crusher and PRU mixed in. Your mom should be proud of your bleeping (Mostly) out of your swearing. Ha! I have ridden almost every route over the years bikepacking from Copper Harbor to Traverse City. Epic terrain and beautiful scenery. Heal up and see you in the woods!
Ahhhhh @29:10 I was waiting for a random stick to flip you. I've been looking to take a trip similar to this. Not nearly as long tho. From Muskegon to Glen Arbor. (sleeping bear dunes) Awesome video man, you're a beast!!
hey its really cool you show off munising thats my familys town. what a lovely village by the lake check out the lakeshore but plz pick up your trash and keep the waterways clean if you visit.
Watching the second half of your video. That mama and cub encounter was scary! Hey, what's the mapping program you're using to show your progress? I like the detail, topography and sepia filter.
What software are you using to animate the trails you were riding on? We have done some major trips in the UP and I would like to see what you were using. Great trip btw!
Thanks! I wrote some scripts to use the Mapbox API. If you have any experience programming, the documentation on their GitHub is really nice. github.com/mapbox/mapbox-gl-js
Love videos like these! Have you ever bikepacked/biked in the southeast or southern Appalachia? It’s where I live, and I love the mountains and rural scenery here. Also, I’m your 800th sub
Strapping a hilltop cinnamon bun to your bike is some real yooper energy.
Which one? Baraga or Wetmore? Or another?
That poor bun took one hell of a beating before he finally ate it.
It's strange living in the UP and seeing stuff and being like, "Hey! I know that place!" Since you hardly see UP stuff in the media.
I kind of like it that way. Not much of a tourist fan.
Yeah, but I like being hidden. I also thought it was cool, I saw my house in this video.
@@PhantomFumes Cool. Wish I had a house. I'd settle for an old hunting camp. It would be way better than government warehousing.
my exact thoughts he put my house in the video hahhahah

You've inspired me to stop sitting around waiting, get a bike, and get out on the trails. Thanks.

The fabled 4x bodyweight bikepacking trip, legendary bro
Tech grad myself and haven't been up there in years. Great to see more of the UP from a biker perspective. Awesome determination buddy 👍
You're an absolute beast man! Your day two commentary had me in stitches lol. Felt every ounce of that pain and suffering
My wife and I drove our grandkids along the back roads you took between Marquette and Lance with our pit stop at Mt. Arvon. Beautiful country for sure. Thank you so much for sharing your adventure.
Trail 14 😍

You can't be right in the head to attempt some of that terrain. That is one hell of an accomplishment, hope you are feeling better.
Sweet roll😂...Great mount! Nom nom nom
At 12:00 the reference to the Toyota dealership is hilarious. Really enjoy your videos. Keep it up your doing great stuff. Thank you.

As someone who went to NMU my freshman year and MTU for a few years since this is pretty sweet to see this all linked together by a young guy!
Thanks!
Thank you so much, man! It means a lot
Hey Pat, you should do a video on your bike setup the drop bar / aero bar setup on a hardtail mtb seems pretty legit.
I could not look away. Thanks for taking us along. My perineum felt every jolt, and there were some doozies in there! Congratulations.
I admire your sense of adventure sir!

Cool ride. Seeing the world by bike is awesome. Good vid. Protect the gooch!
Wow man! Thanks algorithm, great video.

I live in Germfask and watching you go through the Seney refuge swamp is amazing! We had a very wet May so that didn’t help any.
When you left Marquette you basically road through what was my playground as a kid with that huge valley on the side. So cool to see.
Wow! I admire your tenacity! The U P is a beautiful place, I'm itching to get back there.
Wow this is a real definition of adventure.
Dude, your vids are awesome. Keep 'em coming. You're in line for big things (if that's what you want) Beast mode! Thanks for the inspiration.
You've inspired me to make another trip up to the UP from my home base in NE Wisco
Great video and I like the positive energy and determination.
L'Anse is home. Really cool to see it on your journey.
This is an underrated video of an amazing expedition. Inspiring stuff
32:30 - I could not imagine that frustration. Thank you for sharing this video with us! Awesome experience to watch
I’d love to do this route! Maybe this fall!
That was an exciting adventure to watch. You did some hard core root hogging. I’m glad you updated everyone on your condition after the trip. I was worried you had developed a UTI.
A very real account of a very real adventure. I'm thinking you deserve more Sub's.
First time watcher. We'll done and absolutely loved the sweet roll strap down 😅😅😅. Definitely a new sub.
“I’d recommend mid-June” did a mosquito post this

Very cool! Great videography too.
The sweetroll strap is awesome
12:03 your video about the "memories" at the dealer almost made me crash my car heading down the expressway. Keep up the good content!
The kamoot gravel detours were crazy lol. Just basically swamp
Great work pal. Mad respect for the effort 💪
Great video sir. Always wanted to do long distance cycling. Wouldn't know where to begin.
Like a boss! Your positive attitude was inspiring. Those conditions were brutal!
Nice! Thank you for posting, I’m living vicariously through you as I recover from surgery. I have an ancient cyclocross but I miss riding.
What tires do you have? What’s your pack weight? So many questions I’d like to ask.
Awesome riding dude. Glad to see some one out there doing a good ride around the UP
Go Tech! Amazing video 📹 👏.
Great video, I think you did amazing.
Now THAT was a major amount of bushwhacking. Sheesh! I am impressed by your endurance and resolve. And I thought I was cool for climbing over fallen trees on railtrails. lol
29:04 ran into this issue on a bushwhacky hiking trip once. its for snowmobile trails i think in the winter when it freezes the path makes more sense.
Haven't been up there since 1972 when my grandma died. Baraga. SISU.
Holy shit dude - that first day was insane

Great work, looks rough in the beginning but the two track seemed perfect
You da man. I’ve driven across the UP slower in a blizzard.

Sweet bike, Pat. 🤙
INCREDIBLE. Thank you for this incredible video. Really inspiring!
This was fun to watch, great job!
that looks so fun! nice job
I was at the bridge at 33:20 not 5 days ago. Never in a million years could you convince me someone would ride their bike over the driggs
hey its really cool you show off munising thats my familys town. what a lovely village by the lake check out the lakeshore but plz pick up your trash and keep the waterways clean if you visit.
Great Effort!
Thanks!
Dollar Generals mostly exist in fields in the middle of no where! Great ride!
Amazing trip and sick video. I'd love to do this someday.
love seeing places ive been in videos
Cheers from Baraga!
Great video. You're a machine!
New sub. Great video and love seeing so many places I've been but from a bike perspective.
Sounded like an engineer from tech! Also, enjoyed this. Subscribed!
Great video!
Hiawatha National Forest is one of my favorite places
I go to MTU and I love the UP!
Great video. Yea I have to find that diner with the roll. I bet they have some big blueberry pancakes.
Really cool in hancock. My grandma lives in calumet.
What a ride! 🎉
You're a beast! I only been up to Houghton one time and for a visit at Michigan Tech. But it's very pretty totally different way of life lol
laughed out loud with "my gooch is on fire"
😅🤣I'm definitely getting a sweet roll strap!
Watching the second half of your video. That mama and cub encounter was scary! Hey, what's the mapping program you're using to show your progress? I like the detail, topography and sepia filter.
Swamping through the "no trail" portion is commentary gold lol!
you rode right past my house 3 seconds into the video im assuming you are from hancock too! really cool channel you have dude !
Good vid. Monster mileage days. Shame about the jacket, same thing happened to me when i was a kid.
Love it
I would have been ready to stop for the day in L’anse
Seems like you had a great adventure. Sorry you had to cut it short, but at least you gave it a shot.
Recieved a follow from me when you tickled my adhd brain finishing the hotel, motel 😂😂😂
That was insane, I would have dropped after the first day of just 100 miles.
What software are you using to animate the trails you were riding on? We have done some major trips in the UP and I would like to see what you were using. Great trip btw!

Felt like the drive last week took longer. What a gangster.
Make sure you have a GPS tracker with you. Really eerie stuff that goes in in the UP. Let people know where you are at.
