I can't tell you how perfect the timing was on finding this project. My son's one year birthday is coming up and I was in the process of making one with scrap pallet wood. I was clueless on the layout and numbers, Just had a basic idea of what I wanted to do. Spent a couple hours making it yesterday and surprised the wife. It was a big hit. Can't wait to mark it up. Don't say that often about finished projects. Thank you!!!
Thank you for posting this project April. I just got a customer asking for one of these and I was desperately searching for a way out of having to rout a thousand lines! I haven't done any wood burning yet, this is the perfect introduction to it.
Well I'm glad you found it. I would recommend practicing first because it did take a second (on my first go) to get it down where it looked nice. The trick is to make sure the iron is really hot so you don't have to push down too hard, but just glide over the surface. When it isn't burning evenly anymore, give it about 30 secs or so to heat back up.
Hi April, my grand-daughter turns 1 next week and I thought this would be a great present and something she can keep forever from her Poppy. It came out great and appreciate your ideas. Thanks
WOW!! That's a great idea. We found out last Friday that our oldest son & his wife are expecting a baby boy in march 2015. This will be a wonderful gift for them. Thanks and keep up the good work.
These look so clean and crisp, excellent job! You always mention my patience, but you need some SERIOUS patience to do over a 100 of these!! Great vid.
You keep amazing me. I had planned to get my wife something bought for mothers day and she started talking about how she eventually wanted to get a growth chart for our daughter. I've got a day and a half. She's getting this for Mothers Day on Sunday.
That turned out great! I sure do hope that the hundred or so people that have one you made appreciate it. I for one know how much patience and time wood burning can take. Over 100? Seriously!? Nuts
Thanks Ty. Yeah but once I got the technique down, I was able to do all the burning in an hour so it wasn't awful. Plus, selling them was my only source of revenue to support my new hobby, so I was more then willing. ; )
Making this right now but I'm using an old 2" thick slab of wood that I found in my yard. Think it's been outside for at least a few years. Was covered in green mold and moss. I've dried it out and now I'm hand sanding it.. the color looks like driftwood and I'm in love. Planned on a dark stain but this beauty looks like she needs a clear coat! I'm a little nervous about the numbers but I'll tackle that once I get to that point I guess..
Who puts a thumbs down on this? This is awesome work. April I can’t believe how straight you get those lines - by hand! I’m about to take a shot at burning in mine for the kids. I think I’ll practice a bit first :)
I think the way you held the iron looked professional, It allowed you to see what you were doing without the handle or your hand blocking your view. Nicely done as always Miss April :)
April, I just subscribed to your channel and I've watched all your videos. As a fellow woodworker I am proud to see another woman in the shop making videos. I am a self-taught woodworker as well. What you are doing is GREAT! Do your own thing and keep doing it as well as you do. : ) You've got my support!!!!! Thanks for all your hard work and for sharing.
I was just given my grandpa's old wood burning equipment. Grandpa was a pretty skilled artist. I'm going to make a couple of these for brother/niece & nephew and best friend/Godchildren. Thanks for the great Christmas idea!
April Wilkerson Lol! I was just looking up your video again because my aunt wanted to see how they were made and I see that I put my numbers on wrong. I orientated them vertically instead of horizontally (referenced from the rulers hanging position). I'm sure no one will notice or care but it sure stands out to me now. Oh well, lesson learned. FYI- the cut off portions of two of the rulers is just about the perfect amount of material to make one of the wagon & block sets that Steve Ramsey featured on his channel a couple of weeks ago.
Love it, I make so many of these for my customers....never burned the marks in before...always painted them on. Awesome project and so popular!!!! Thanks for sharing!!
Very nice! When we moved to California from Michigan I took a narrow off-cut from some other board and transferred the marks on the door jamb to it, like a carpenter's story stick. Now I can make an actual ruler and transfer those marks, along with the new ones onto it! Love the project, the video AND the outtakes! Great job!
I was super ecstatic to have finished my first wood project today! A wine rack for hubby for Valentines Day! Im already looking forward to creating something similar like this growth chart for my 18 months old! Thanks for the tips and help with knowing where the measurements go I wasn't quite sure where to start! :)
That looks really great! I see why you've sold so many of them in the past. I particularly like the varying depth of the burn I was seeing on wider burn sections like the numbers. I bet it adds nice texture. Outtakes were fun. Thanks.
Wow!!! One - thank you for the soldering iron tip, and, two, I appreciate the way you hold the soldering iron. I am going to have to try that on my next burn project!!
Love it! I have a burner too, think I'll have to make one of these growth charts now... After a lot of practice burning, it's definitely not as easy as you make it look April! Well done!
April, exceptional video and tutorial. I have utilized a piece of molding in my shop to track my granddaughter's height. You have inspired me to build the growth chart. Thanks for sharing.
April, I am loving your channel! I made two of these this fall. I am taking them to a holiday bazaar in a couple of weeks! Thanks for sharing the idea. Keep up the great work! And you website is just as good...thank you!
I just figured out what to give me son and daughter in law for Christmas. They just had baby number two and she will love this. Great idea and video April, thanks.
Totally brings me back to school. It would be a lot more work, but putting that slight bevel on one side with that thin strip of metal going down the side would look awesome. I love the burn-in look. I think I may do this, before my kids get too much bigger.
I like the wood burning on this. I've made a few of these, but I use a router to make the lines and ink the numbers in. The routing took forever, so I made a full size ruler template and now I can blast through one of these in no time.
Looks awesome! Wish I would've had one of these when my kids were little, we lost the growth chart the same way you did. Only change I would make would be to make the numbers up and down instead of sideways.
: ) Glad you like it. Yeah, it's a great present for anybody with kiddos or grand kids. It's something that the parents can keep forever, or the kid can even take with them once they are grown....maybe record their child's height on the same ruler.
April I love your growth ruler. It was taking to long to burn so I took a piece of 1/4” x 1 1/2” key stock tack welded it to a old screwdriver and heated it with a torch. It was much faster ! 👍
Your video is very helpful. I am trying to do this for my son and am practicing with the wood burning tool first. I got the $15 one at hobby lobby, however in your video you are able to do those lines with ease, and then fill in a few at a time. Whenever I try to fill in the pine wood I have I get about half a line done before it stops making a burn mark. I have tried doing it incredibly slowly with the same result. I am wondering if it is the burner not holding temperature well...any thoughts on that? It says it goes to 950 deg on the box, is the green one and called 'Woodburning Value Pen.'
This is a smashing idea! I've been dying to use up some surplus boards ... now I just have to find my working soldering iron! Thank you April for yet another wonderfully practical video :o)
You have made OVER 100?! Wow, that is some serious dedication! I wood burned initials on 5 small gift boxes and thought, "Nope, never doing that again." Cool project!
Im so glad I watched this, I was actually looking for hanging tips but found the tip about the soldering iron so much more useful👌👌😍 that just leveled up my project, especially since I already have one brand new in the box 😄
Brilliant! Love it, it's like a prop from Land of The Giants (old people help out the young people on that reference). I'm tempted to make one just to have it randomly laying around making everything else look small.
Good job April. Do you hang them next to a door frame, or does it matter? Also what do you use to attach them to the wall? Do you use 1x6? Thanks for the videos.
From beginning to end I am able to make one in about 2 hrs now but when I first started, it took me 4. Not too bad when you think about how long you will have it. : )
So beautiful! What is the measurement of the piece of wood from top to bottom? 6 1/2 feet? Thank you so much for sharing your instructions & all of your hard work!!!😊
Thanks for the video. I made this ruler for my grandkids. I listed different Disney rides by the height requirement for that ride. They always check to see what rides they can ride.
That is very cool i'm making one tomorrow!!!!! What kind of wood is this? Will a soldering iron burn the surface like that for most wood types? I'd like to put the increments on with a router, but im guessing a hardwood would be better as it wouldnt splinter as much? Thanks!!
This is ace April - I'm totally doing this for when my baby arrives! Also, you randomly falling over (a flat floor?!) made me chuckle for at least ten minutes. x
Freakin' awesome! My girlfriend and I were just about to start marking our wall when I found your tutorial. Coincidence! Off to the store we go! Thanks April!
Thanks for responding, I appreciate the answer and it is of course what most people do. Just wanted to make it more like a medical height stand they have in doctor's offices. I will figure something out and if I do, I will post it here. thanks again, keep up the wonderful videos.
Thanks April...That's my nephew's present sorted, once I find the stencils, there will be a bit more work as they use metres here in Colombia. I'll probably put 1" numbers every 10cm and the 3" for the 1 and 2m marks. A great idea, like everyone else as kids we used the door jam :)
Well most of them are. Mine are the only ones I've ever seen that are burned on. I just think it adds a cool look (in person). Glad to know you're enjoying the videos. : )
I did that with all three of my sons! They didn't take them when they moved, though. Maybe they'll want them when I die. That became morose, quickly. Anyway, I made my numbers smaller with the intention of burning characterizations of their favorite hobbies on there, too. Their lack of interest made me lose motivation. I should do it, anyway. Thank you for this video! You always get me so pumped on projects!
My niece just asked me to make one of these for her, Thanks for another excellent and timely project! Love the outtakes...My wife says she can trip over a flat surface...
Your outline burning technique reminds me of setting a chisel or hand saw into a knife line. I bet going over your pencil lines with a marking knife would give you a really awesome groove to follow for outlining. Probably an even crisper edge with less feathering.
I love how this is kinda rustic looking. I am actualy interested in building a rustic sterio component cabinet and would love to use old barn board to do it. Do you think you could make a piece of furniture using barn board so I can get a feel of how to go about doing it?
: ) None of the projects I have on my to-do list is going to be made from barn wood. Plus, I don't really make too much furniture yet. I bet you can find a youtube video on it though! If not, I would just think of a general design you like and then take it step by step.
I have been looking on youtube im looking for plans now. Thank you very much for the response, and thanks for all your videos. I'm going to make the measuring board for my friend.
Great project! Think I'll have to make a couple of these for my niece and nephew. I was pleasantly surprised to see you on Cool Tools today! Keep up the great work!
So this tutorial is amazing, I have a question though! Does the tip of your iron ever start to unscrew? I have to use pliers every so often to tighten it back on.
If you were going to make a bunch of these I wonder if you could build a simple T-square jig to use with a trim router and just make your ruler marks by routing out say 1/16th of an inch and hand routing out your numbers to the same depth. Then hit all the recessed areas with a torch to char them and sand the surface clean, not sure if you would get the same clean lines that you have but might be faster for mass production.
I would suggest instead to have a template made from some metal so you could set it on top of the board then come through with a torch and burn everything in. Again, it might not be as clean, but it would be quick. I'm no longer making these, but when I was I got the time down to under 4 hours.
+April Wilkerson Under 4 hours? That's fast considering those little burn pens are so small. Love your videos, I find them entertaining and they motivate me to try my hand at some of the projects.
Great job April after seeing this video and your wood burning it motivated me to try wood burning and now I have people ordering signs with there names burned into them and stuff. You should watch my one video on my channel that shows one of them that I was working on.
April , you're much capricious , loved this great wooden ruler , I will try to make an equal here in Brazil . Kisses , continue to post interesting and simple techniques videos. André
I can't tell you how perfect the timing was on finding this project. My son's one year birthday is coming up and I was in the process of making one with scrap pallet wood. Don't say that often about finished projects. Thank you!!!
: ) Haha, that's awesome. I'm glad it was helpful.
Very impressive! The wood burning comes out so neat and tidy, not what I expected at all. Also, that's amazing that you've made over 100 of them!
Thank you for posting this project April. I just got a customer asking for one of these and I was desperately searching for a way out of having to rout a thousand lines! I haven't done any wood burning yet, this is the perfect introduction to it.

April Wilkerson Thanks for the tip! Still waiting to get the go ahead from her, but I'll let you know how it goes.
Hi April, my grand-daughter turns 1 next week and I thought this would be a great present and something she can keep forever from her Poppy. It came out great and appreciate your ideas. Thanks
Fantastic idea! I'm definitely gonna do this, because we've already run into this problem with our growth chart for the kids
: ) wonderful!

Love this, April! I've made growth charts out of fabric for my kids but I'm kinda lovin' this wood idea now too! Hmmmm...
What an excellent project! The kids and I are making this as a Christmas gift for my wife.
That turned out great! I sure do hope that the hundred or so people that have one you made appreciate it. I for one know how much patience and time wood burning can take.
Over 100? Seriously!? Nuts

April Wilkerson April, How much did you sell your growth charts for, if you don't mind me asking? Thanks for your videos. :)
Like the project a lot, but most impressed with your wood burning skills. You are a rock star with that thing.
Who puts a thumbs down on this? This is awesome work. April I can’t believe how straight you get those lines - by hand! I’m about to take a shot at burning in mine for the kids. I think I’ll practice a bit first :)

April Wilkerson

Fun! I'm going to see if my daughter wants to make one with me. You and Linn Darbin Orvar really inspire her to explore woodworking! Thanks for that!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching.
That's actually pretty slick! Still doing great with these how to videos you avoided for so long. Off to the workshop I go!
Love it! I have a burner too, think I'll have to make one of these growth charts now... After a lot of practice burning, it's definitely not as easy as you make it look April! Well done!
Where can I find a pencilcase big enough to hold this?
Your burning technique for straight lines is incredible!!
April, exceptional video and tutorial. I have utilized a piece of molding in my shop to track my granddaughter's height. You have inspired me to build the growth chart. Thanks for sharing.
That's a neat project and I see why you've done over 100 of these.
Cool Project, April! Our 1st grandbaby came this last July. Excited to make one of these for him!
Nice! really like this project. We use a door jam. Lol I see this being one of our family shop projects soon. Thanks for the insperation.
; ) Glad you like it Izzy.
April Wilkerson Izzy & You are my heroes :)
wow another great simple idea ..
iv'e never seen a soldering iron used to burn wood before ..
love it !!
I have a project on my list that requires wood burning. I have never done any of that. You make it look so easy. I love the ruler!
Chris
Chris Pine Yeah give it a try, I would suggest practicing on a scrap piece first but it will take you no time to get the hang of it.
Wow that turned out great. That wood burning is the cat's meow, haven't though about one since about 1962, great idea that looks professional.
What a great project, simple and elegant. Beats marking the wall too.
Nice project. I remember the wall at my grandparents house with our marks. Thanks for bringing that back.
With such precision you make the lines I at first thought it was painted from with a stencil. Nicely done!
That turned out great April. The lines and numbers look really great.
Oh wonderful! : ) I hope they love it.
Great idea burning the marks and numbers. They look so good!
: ) Thanks Cy!
April, love this project, so cool.
: ) Thanks Linn.
Totally brings me back to school. It would be a lot more work, but putting that slight bevel on one side with that thin strip of metal going down the side would look awesome. I love the burn-in look. I think I may do this, before my kids get too much bigger.
That turned out great April brilliant idea for the kids rooms
I like the wood burning on this. I've made a few of these, but I use a router to make the lines and ink the numbers in. The routing took forever, so I made a full size ruler template and now I can blast through one of these in no time.
I like the ruler, it seems like that would take forever. Keep it up April.
Looks awesome! Wish I would've had one of these when my kids were little, we lost the growth chart the same way you did. Only change I would make would be to make the numbers up and down instead of sideways.
Simple, elegant, heirloom project. A great gift idea.
Thanks again.
AND...a trained dog TOO! The hits just keep on comin'.
: ) Glad you like it. Yeah, it's a great present for anybody with kiddos or grand kids. It's something that the parents can keep forever, or the kid can even take with them once they are grown....maybe record their child's height on the same ruler.
April Wilkerson Yep...make sure you sign it....maybe, now that you're so good at burning, it's time to think about a logo and a branding iron. Hmmmmm.
Oh yeah, maybe a tiny W branding iron....now there is an idea I like.
This is a smashing idea! I've been dying to use up some surplus boards ... now I just have to find my working soldering iron! Thank you April for yet another wonderfully practical video :o)
Great job. I'm really liking the bloopers at the end of the videos. Keep 'em coming.
You have made OVER 100?! Wow, that is some serious dedication! I wood burned initials on 5 small gift boxes and thought, "Nope, never doing that again." Cool project!
Great one April! That is too cute. My daughter would love that.
I love your clear diction and explanations. Great project, I'm starting this ASAP for my baby boy!
Great project. I like the idea of burning the marks in versus painting them.
Great idea April, I bet a project like this will sell good at craft fairs and great gift ideas for Christmas gifts.
Im so glad I watched this, I was actually looking for hanging tips but found the tip about the soldering iron so much more useful👌👌😍 that just leveled up my project, especially since I already have one brand new in the box 😄
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Awesome job! The possibilities are endless with customizing options. You burn quite a bit faster than me.
Well this is the 141 ruler I've made, so I kinda have the burning thing down. (speeding up the footage might also help) ; )
That my friend is a lot of rulers!!!
Very nice project! The amount of patience needed to do the wood burning would beyond me, sorry as i am to say.
: ) Two hours to make something isn't awful considering how long something like this will be kept around.
Another great project Ms. April...going to make these for my grandkids. Thanks for the video and idea.
I do not understand much English, but to keep track of your channel is a lot of fun .... I love your ideas ... Many greetings from Sweden
: ) Thank you. Greetings from Texas.
Loved the ruler and your presentation of the steps! Loved the first outtake even more, you're brilliant! Brightened up my day completely!
: ) Oh, well thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Wow, you have an incredible amount of patience! Great Job!!
Great project April,
And what a great shower gift. I'll have to remember this project next time my wife has a baby shower.
Regards,
Bob
Will have to make one of these for my kids. Must take a good deal of time to do all the burning.
From beginning to end I am able to make one in about 2 hrs now but when I first started, it took me 4. Not too bad when you think about how long you will have it. : )
That's a great project April!
:) Thank ya, thank ya
Great project! That idea would be cool to put on wings of a miter saw stand to easily rough cut lumber.
So beautiful! What is the measurement of the piece of wood from top to bottom? 6 1/2 feet? Thank you so much for sharing your instructions & all of your hard work!!!😊
It looks awesome! And also looks like A LOT of work.
Now I´m off to check the stained one on the site.
Also, you randomly falling over (a flat floor?!) made me chuckle for at least ten minutes. x
i love the out takes don't stop
Freakin' awesome! My girlfriend and I were just about to start marking our wall when I found your tutorial. Coincidence! Off to the store we go! Thanks April!
I wish I had one of those. Keep up the great work! I appreciate the time you have put in to making these videos!
Thanks for responding, I appreciate the answer and it is of course what most people do. Just wanted to make it more like a medical height stand they have in doctor's offices. I will figure something out and if I do, I will post it here.
thanks again, keep up the wonderful videos.
Hi April
Very nice work. 👍🏼 How long did it take you to burn the wood from start to finish? 😊
I've seen these before but never made one and certainly hadn't thought of doing the wood burning. Nice project and great tutorial.
: ) Thanks Angie. I remember seeing your profile on LumberJocks when I first signed on, do you have a YT channel as well?
I do. But not for woodworking... At least not yet. Lol. I've wanted to though.
Well I'm bias, but I say do it! : ) It's time consuming, but I'm having a blast.
Ooh, I would love to see a metric one if you make it. Would you send me a picture?
Will do! :)
thanks April, going to make a few of these for brother and sisters kids. They grow fast.
I always thought the lines were painted on! This is super cute. I always get excited when you post a new video lol.
They may want them one day when they have children of their own, to use THEIR growth chart for THEIR kids! We can hope. :)
My niece just asked me to make one of these for her, Thanks for another excellent and timely project! Love the outtakes...My wife says she can trip over a flat surface...
; ) There you go. That's awesome, I hope it comes out well.
Your outline burning technique reminds me of setting a chisel or hand saw into a knife line. I bet going over your pencil lines with a marking knife would give you a really awesome groove to follow for outlining. Probably an even crisper edge with less feathering.
What size is your wood and stencils too please? Yhank you this is awesome 👌🏽 x
April Great project I think I will make one for my grand children. I like all your projects. You are very creative.
Bob.
"Randomly fall down", that's great! Glad I'm the only one that does that kind of thing. Great project and gifts!
; ) haha
: 0 Aw man! I missed it I completely forgot it was going to be airing today!
So this tutorial is amazing, I have a question though! Does the tip of your iron ever start to unscrew? I have to use pliers every so often to tighten it back on.
great inspiration! all the way over the pond, will make one in Portugal!
Love your videos, I find them entertaining and they motivate me to try my hand at some of the projects.
you're fun to watch with all your projects... like your shop
Love that project and love your little dog!
Great job April after seeing this video and your wood burning it motivated me to try wood burning and now I have people ordering signs with there names burned into them and stuff. You should watch my one video on my channel that shows one of them that I was working on.
Did mine with a router but like the burner idea and will use that next time since it's faster. Thanks for the tip. Looks great!
Oh cool. I would love to see how your router one came out.
April , you're much capricious , loved this great wooden ruler , I will try to make an equal here in Brazil . Kisses , continue to post interesting and simple techniques videos. André
