    I can't tell you how perfect the timing was on finding this project. My son's one year birthday is coming up and I was in the process of making one with scrap pallet wood. I was clueless on the layout and numbers, Just had a basic idea of what I wanted to do. Spent a couple hours making it yesterday and surprised the wife. It was a big hit. Can't wait to mark it up. Don't say that often about finished projects. Thank you!!!

    Very impressive! The wood burning comes out so neat and tidy, not what I expected at all. Also, that's amazing that you've made over 100 of them!

    Thank you for posting this project April. I just got a customer asking for one of these and I was desperately searching for a way out of having to rout a thousand lines! I haven't done any wood burning yet, this is the perfect introduction to it.

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  10 років тому +1

      Well I'm glad you found it. I would recommend practicing first because it did take a second (on my first go) to get it down where it looked nice. The trick is to make sure the iron is really hot so you don't have to push down too hard, but just glide over the surface. When it isn't burning evenly anymore, give it about 30 secs or so to heat back up.

      : ) Thanks Alistair. Well since I've done so many I can knock one out in about 2 hours so it isn't awful.

    You keep amazing me. I had planned to get my wife something bought for mothers day and she started talking about how she eventually wanted to get a growth chart for our daughter. I've got a day and a half. She's getting this for Mothers Day on Sunday.

    That turned out great! I sure do hope that the hundred or so people that have one you made appreciate it. I for one know how much patience and time wood burning can take.
    Over 100? Seriously!? Nuts

    • @AprilWilkerson
      @AprilWilkerson  10 років тому +1

      Thanks Ty. Yeah but once I got the technique down, I was able to do all the burning in an hour so it wasn't awful. Plus, selling them was my only source of revenue to support my new hobby, so I was more then willing. ; )

    Making this right now but I'm using an old 2" thick slab of wood that I found in my yard. Think it's been outside for at least a few years. Was covered in green mold and moss. I've dried it out and now I'm hand sanding it.. the color looks like driftwood and I'm in love. Planned on a dark stain but this beauty looks like she needs a clear coat! I'm a little nervous about the numbers but I'll tackle that once I get to that point I guess..

      Lol! I was just looking up your video again because my aunt wanted to see how they were made and I see that I put my numbers on wrong. I orientated them vertically instead of horizontally (referenced from the rulers hanging position). I'm sure no one will notice or care but it sure stands out to me now. Oh well, lesson learned. FYI- the cut off portions of two of the rulers is just about the perfect amount of material to make one of the wagon & block sets that Steve Ramsey featured on his channel a couple of weeks ago.

    Very nice! When we moved to California from Michigan I took a narrow off-cut from some other board and transferred the marks on the door jamb to it, like a carpenter's story stick. Now I can make an actual ruler and transfer those marks, along with the new ones onto it!
    Love the project, the video AND the outtakes! Great job!

    Totally brings me back to school. It would be a lot more work, but putting that slight bevel on one side with that thin strip of metal going down the side would look awesome. I love the burn-in look. I think I may do this, before my kids get too much bigger.

    Your video is very helpful. I am trying to do this for my son and am practicing with the wood burning tool first. I got the $15 one at hobby lobby, however in your video you are able to do those lines with ease, and then fill in a few at a time. Whenever I try to fill in the pine wood I have I get about half a line done before it stops making a burn mark. I have tried doing it incredibly slowly with the same result. I am wondering if it is the burner not holding temperature well...any thoughts on that? It says it goes to 950 deg on the box, is the green one and called 'Woodburning Value Pen.'

    I did that with all three of my sons! They didn't take them when they moved, though. Maybe they'll want them when I die. That became morose, quickly. Anyway, I made my numbers smaller with the intention of burning characterizations of their favorite hobbies on there, too. Their lack of interest made me lose motivation. I should do it, anyway. Thank you for this video! You always get me so pumped on projects!

    I love how this is kinda rustic looking. I am actualy interested in building a rustic sterio component cabinet and would love to use old barn board to do it. Do you think you could make a piece of furniture using barn board so I can get a feel of how to go about doing it?

      : ) None of the projects I have on my to-do list is going to be made from barn wood. Plus, I don't really make too much furniture yet. I bet you can find a youtube video on it though! If not, I would just think of a general design you like and then take it step by step.

    So this tutorial is amazing, I have a question though! Does the tip of your iron ever start to unscrew? I have to use pliers every so often to tighten it back on.

    If you were going to make a bunch of these I wonder if you could build a simple T-square jig to use with a trim router and just make your ruler marks by routing out say 1/16th of an inch and hand routing out your numbers to the same depth. Then hit all the recessed areas with a torch to char them and sand the surface clean, not sure if you would get the same clean lines that you have but might be faster for mass production.

      I would suggest instead to have a template made from some metal so you could set it on top of the board then come through with a torch and burn everything in. Again, it might not be as clean, but it would be quick. I'm no longer making these, but when I was I got the time down to under 4 hours.

      +April Wilkerson Under 4 hours? That's fast considering those little burn pens are so small. Love your videos, I find them entertaining and they motivate me to try my hand at some of the projects.

    Great job April after seeing this video and your wood burning it motivated me to try wood burning and now I have people ordering signs with there names burned into them and stuff. You should watch my one video on my channel that shows one of them that I was working on.

    Did mine with a router but like the burner idea and will use that next time since it's faster. Thanks for the tip. Looks great!
