Would love an update ! This looks better than anything on the market. You could dig a smooth bowl in the clay under the hut for a dry dust bathing bowl. Also the gutter could go into a water but which then automatically goes into a standard water dispenser.

good job Dan, When I used to keep chickens my coop was above ground enabling me to keep feed and water hoppers hung underneath. Not sure how you deal with waste when cleaning out coop but I used to sieve the wood shavings of droppings, as long as it was dry and reuse. My girls used to perch on my shoulder and have long conversations with me LOL GOOD LUCK.

It's a thing of veritable beauty! 😁. I designed one very similar donkeys years ago with long wheel barrow style handles one end and pram wheels t'other. I thought this would help me move it along in order to enrich the land. Yet, I've never been able to attain my dream of keeping chickens. I am so proud of you, I can see its hard work... But rather this kind of hard work then stuck in a job that robs you of your soul. Bloody well done. Sending everything good your way. Xx

We have had birds that ate insulation, and died. So, I'm not sure I'd ever insulate. They found the insulation in the barn and ate it.

great coop. chickens live in excessive cold, and do fine. So, the issue, with chickens, is likely keeping them cooler, and not warmer in some areas. I love the bar under the coop. In my high wind area I would attach to an outer wall.

Me too. I build stuff, not design stuff, so this has helped me a lot. Just the kind of thing I was after.. I'll be making a walk in mesh enclosed area too, so the chooks have an inside/outside area for in bad weather. And I have to figure out a rainwater runoff water bowl design, so that the water automatically refills in rain but has an overflow that drains away from the coop.

We finished the coop just before Christmas we used shiplap (still not painted), rigid corrugated felt sheets for the roof and nice thick doors at the back from wood that we had already. I just put 2 nest boxes in and that is fine for our 6 - copied the perches and shelf and they love it! They use the shelter underneath - we are in S France but in the mountains and it does rain! So, thanks for the lovely design. We have electric fencing surrounding the coop. I put a small tub of water inside with a lid and made holes in it, using those pecking cups.

We used to have chickens and they laid all through winter...and ate all the veggie stuff we gave them as well as their chicken food. They also scratched my mum's flowers out of the ground so they had to go. Thank you very much for this. We’ve had our first chickens and they are in the coop as I write. We made our coop based on a modified version of this....they seem really settled. Our doors are on either side because the back of the coop is against our garage. The advice about not having a lip on the cleaning door was invaluable. Thank you!

Now it's raining a lot and they need up-space and a permanent house, but one I may choose to move sometime; also easy access to the coop! Good job, wow - a great design. You make no mention of the ducks. Maybe they were for butcher? We keep our ducks and chickens together. The ducks use the bottom and the chickens use the roosting area. We prefer the duck eggs - they are larger and excellent. 2 thoughts ~ the chickens themselves are the heat source in winter. We have only 13 birds and you will be surprised how much heat they throw. And 2nd thought, the shelving for roosting ~ they poop all over it. Really good video, great coop. Just looking at the date, maybe this was before the ducks?

Love your birds and love the portable coop. I'm sure you're getting tons of "suggestions and tips" from people but there is one suggestion that may be imperative. Chickens need some sort of overhead cover. Where I live in the US, Hawks are a real threat. I have never lost a bird (thankfully) to a hawk but they have regularly been on patrol. It's not just Hawks to be concerned with, there are many other birds and animals that love to eat chicken as much as humans do. Because it is a portable coop you may want to use a sort of netting that lets the sun shine through and can easily be moved. There are burlap types and many other types to choose from. If you notice, some of your birds are staying under the coop. This is due to their feeling much more secure when they have overhead cover. Just a suggestion. You seem to be doing a great job. Best wishes and continued success.

I have watched many chicken coupe videos in the last week to acquire different ideas. The placement of your ventilation is definitely an idea I will hold on to. It is far from impossible to finish the gable triangle, but why waste time doing so when chickens need ventilation anyway. I don't know why others don't do it like that. Perhaps a longer soffit is in order is someone wants to get picky, but that's easy! Thank you for your video and the knowledge it has shared.

The chickens are the heat source you can prevent escaping via insulation :p They really warm a place up, especially a smaller coop like that with so many chickens. You're right about not needing it though with your breed and climate. Maybe just close those tiny gaps in your side panels to reduce drafts, that'll makem a lot more comfy on those windy winter nights.

I like your videos! Building my chicken coop out of scrap supplies I had. I insulated mine but it can get to -20F or -29C here.

I love ur videos. I’m planning on moving my family from the city to a smallholding in (fingers crossed) 2 years. We live in Scotland, so not too dissimilar to Ireland lol I can’t wait to see ur next tour video, and see more with the Kunekune’s, they are just lovely 😍

A suggestion for a water catchment system would be pvc pipe to a bucket or barrel with a nipple waterer.

So glad to find your channel. Watching from North Mayo. Best of luck with your hens, you've created a great little place for them to live. It's great collecting the eggs every day. Hopefully you're not troubled by mink and foxes

I love your chicken coop! Like a few other people have said herbs in nesting boxes are great--but they also enjoy eating them (if you give them feed.) Oregano is extremely healthy for them due to its antibiotic properties (you can even add it fresh or dry to their water like a nice oregano tea! lol!). If you wanted, you could even add 3 to 4 drops of oregano essential per 1 gallon of water! Thyme and oregano are wonderful to add in boxes!
