    OMG, my original chicken coop design has same poop tray and two tier roost bar exactly like you have. After um-teen design iterations, I ended up doing the deep liter method. Great build! This is the style I've been eyeing for a while now. I like the simplicity of the lean-to roof, the covered egg access and the droppings clean out methodology. I also really want to build a coop that could be easily moved. Just setting it on leveled pavers, perhaps just putting down a couple tap-con screws into the pavers to keep the wind from lifting it, and just lag bolting the run to the coop for easy separation would make this very easy to move to a new location on the property using a utility trailer.

    • @dontbanmebrodontbanme5403
      @dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 Рік тому

      While moving is great, the one problem I have with that is making sure your chickens are secure. I'm going to extend the hardware cloth for my walls 2 feet deep on all sides (yeah, costly). If you move the coop, how do you make sure animals can't dig through the bottom to get to it?

    • @jayhemfindsyou
      @jayhemfindsyou Рік тому +1

      @@dontbanmebrodontbanme5403 If you look at the other builds, a lot of people don't worry about burying the hardware cloth, instead they put large rocks (6-12" diameter rocks) lining the hardware cloth to ground contact around the entire coop/run and the animals that tend to dig under like racoons, possums and foxes can't dig with the large rocks in the way. I think it looks great that way too.

      I copied the design and made my own measurements.... Realistically building things like this doesn't require the cabinet or furniture making mentality.... 1/16" or even an 1/8" off is something that would get lost in the soup or paint, liquid trim etc..... But trust me those finish guys, furniture, cabinet people have a passion for measuring to the 32nd and 64th.... But for the typical weekend warrior handyman that is really a waste of time. It's an outdoor chicken coop....

    Ive been looking at a lot of these chicken coop builds and this design is really nice! Two questions, does the rain stay out even with the windows open/could the windows be installed upside down so the screens are at the top? And do you have any issues with water intrusion where the egg door is folding down? Looks like there wasn't much overhang on the topside. Great job though....really like this layout!

    • @jayhemfindsyou
      @jayhemfindsyou Рік тому +2

      I am almost done with my build (clone of this design), and if you plan you coop layout so the nesting boxes are on the prevailing downwind side they will stay dry, even in our east coast summer storms! The door that folds up, under the upper sheet of T1-11 is not prone to leaking from wind blown rain. Nesting boxes where the access hinge up top are prone to leaking as rain pelts the side by the windows and runs down. The other benefit of the hinge down access is you don't have to hold the access hatch up as you gather the eggs and no danger of it dropping on your head or fingers.

      @@jayhemfindsyou did you find somewhere that he put plans for this build or did you just write down a supply list as the video was playing? • @jayhemfindsyou
      @jayhemfindsyou Рік тому +1

      @@mikebrummy The original designer sells the plans. I wanted mine to be larger, 6' x 8' so I basically designed it in AutoCAD (I'm a civil engineer by day) from the video, using it as a basis for the design. From there I was able to put together my materials list. I really like the efficiency of this design especially with the run with a lean-to roof in the opposite direction as the main roof. I also added linoleum as a single sheet to cover the main floor and 3" up the walls to make it easier to clean in the event you have to get a mop in there for stuck on poop!

    Look up the vacuum cleaner from the brave little toaster. That was my first thought when I saw it. It looks like him with his teeth showing. Hope this helps. Nice coop too.

    Thank you so much for making this video.
    Do you have plans for the adjustments you made for your coop? I will have 7 babies come July and will need to start gathering supplies. I do have plans for Chris’ coop, but I love to make it smaller before Chicken math decide to come and play in my head, lol!

      Haha, we're twins! I too have 7 coming in July. I ordered mine from cackle hatchery.
      In terms of plans, I'd just start measuring out an area and draw out some plans on your iPad and keep adjusting til it makes sense. For me, I'm actually going to start with the nesting boxes and build the coop to house four of them (even though 2 nesting boxes would do just fine for 7 birds).

    I love the adjustments you've made from the original plans. I as well have only 6 chicks. I want to build this coop but am worried it won't fit in the area planned. It's about 10' x 15'. Would your design fit in that space? Also, are your plans available for purchase? I love your work. Keep sharing your talent.

      No plans, but the coop plus the run is 6 ft wide and 14 ft long

      Great video! So many people are interested in raising backyard chickens after that surge in egg prices, I know your sales would be huge if you sold plans for this coop! I’d be first in line to purchase it! Thank you for the video, I’m going to attempt to build it but I’d feel more confident if I had the plans to refer to if I run into trouble. 😊

    Very nice looking coop & thanks for the step by step video. I like the windows, but how do you open them? Do you have to enter the coop to do this or can you open them from the outside? Lastly, do you have a link where I can find some similar?

    Third Coast Craftsman posted this exact same (nearly identical except double doors) coop a year ago on his channel. His has his plans and a walkthru video.

    Question on the windows, I'm working on building this style coop for my chicks. Did you put the windows in reversed so that they can be opened from the outside? Or can you only open them from inside? Haven't been able to find any resources on flipping the window direction...my windows have a release latch to open and close

    I enjoyed watching this and Chris’s build so much I built this same coop for my 8 chickens with a ton of help from my father in law! One thing I was uncertain of is how to fasten the roof to the coop? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

      You should have the ability to screw the roof to the coop from inside the coop!

      No mods to the coop. I am going to add sand and some gravel to the run to prevent it from being a mud pit.
