In this DCS: AH-64D video, we’ll dig into use of the Area Weapon System, or AWS. The AWS consists of the M230E1 30mm chain gun that is mounted under the chin of the helicopter. The official rate of fire is 625 +/- 25 rounds per minute, but this is most often reduced in the field. The gun can transverse 86-degrees left and right, and it can elevate 9-degrees up when within +/- 10 degrees of the aircraft centerline and 11-degrees when outside of +/- 10 degrees of the aircraft centerline. It can traverse down up to 60-degrees.
Ammunition types include the M789 High-Explosive Dual Purpose and the M788 practice round. At early access release, the Robbie fuel tank will always be installed, and this results in a maximum gun load of 300 rounds. Later, after Early Access release, we plan to make the Robbie tank optional. This would allow a maximum gun load of 1,200 rounds. The software-supported maximum range is 4,200 meters. - Ігри
This will be insane in VR ... so looking forward to fly the apache!
Yeah with this AI is just a target practice. Good looking cockpit yes but immersion wise is just empty unfortunately.
yeah more like insane rubbish frame rates in vr :))
I just hope it’s smooth in VR. That’s a lot of screens to render including front and back simultaneously
@@AlbertZiegler069 agreed great idea !
@@AlbertZiegler069 Wait for vulkan. DCS main problem is resource management and lack of proper multi-threading.
The two most iconic gun sounds:
1. A-10 brrt
2. Apache thump thump thump
It’s more of a GATATATATATATATATATATATATATA
the Hind is pretty cool sounding too
It's putting a hot kernel in a can and having it pop but at 750ish rpm
(I'm dumb it's 625)
For those of you wondering, the "Robbie Tank" is a small, self-sealing, fire-proof fuel tank situated directly behind the ammunition compartment. When removed it allows for auxiliary ammunition to be loaded.
I scrolled down, specifically hoping someone had answered that question.
Thank you
Not quite accurate. A Robertson (aka Robbie) tank is an auxiliary combo-pack that holds additional fuel and ammunition. You can't just remove the fuel portion of a Robbie. You'd have to swap it out for a dedicated fuel pack or ammo mag.
@@chadpendleberry8663 awesome, thanks for the clarification. I've only encountered them as a product in civilian roles
It look's better and better every time, can't wait to fly this out. Thank you
sound designers at eagle dynamics are the best. no other flight sims comes close or game studio comes close to the sound quality of ED. bravo
EA were voted worst company in the USA. bravo.
@@joejoe2658 i meant ED , Eagle Dynamics. Obviously NOT electronic arts LoL
Wouldnt say any game studio come close to ED. There are plenty games with excelent sound design.
@@marekgrzejszczak2901 yeah, not saying there aren't good sound designing Studios But fly by sounds alone, nobody does them better

Awesome job with this module Wags and I honestly believe it will be your finest and most purchased of them all, such is the sheer admiration we all have for this Heli and the sheer quality of the work done. You and your team's efforts will be thoroughly rewarded - I have no doubt. Bravo - O7
I cannot express how happy it makes me to see someone do this weapon justice.
Wow! Just anything beyond what I could imagine. It looks and sounds incredible.
Ya know, it never ceases to amaze me how people just can’t resist the urge to ask the question that we already know Wags isn’t going to answer. When… are we going to realize that this project is critical to the future of DCS and every module that comes after it’s release? It’s literally setting a new precedence in realism for pc simulation. On another note, check out the improvements in FLIR picture from the TADS. Not everything is hot anymore and there is distinguishable “color” variation between warmer and cooler objects. Excellent job ED. Bring the 64 at pilots discretion. We’re patiently waiting.
So let them not release it for another five years to absolutely make sure?
@@getsideways7257 We dont want the bf2042 experience bud.
@@getsideways7257 when it's ready... and you may have missed it, but there is a pandemic on this planet that actually doesn't stop for DCS release schedules, or at borders. It has slowed or negatively affected mostly every business on this planet, other than medical mask production.
@@bronco5334 stop acting so entitled and like you understand how difficult it is or isn't to be a software developer trying to make a very complex thing. Also based your assumptions with Star Citizen I can tell you put literally no effort into researching things so that says a lot. Just wait patently like the rest of us and know it will be released soon and enjoy the extra miles they gave us for being late. I mean the alternative could of been a buggy mess. They had good reasons I'm sure.
@@csdigitaldesign And which module wasn't a "buggy mess" upon release? Why should I "wait patiently like the rest of us" when you can happily wait by yourselves? Nobody forces you to buy / install it right away. Why do you feel you need to dictate others when they are having it?
Thank You!! I was an Apache Crew Chief in the Army, we didn't get to fly these BAD BOYZ - just work on them. But you NEVER FORGET THE SOUND of the Gun. Lol.
Feels so close! Can’t wait! Thank you ED and Wags!
Love the rate and quality that these videos are coming out at!
The quality and level of detail that goes into modules like these is amazing. So obvious the passion that must run through the whole ED team (including yourself Wags). So good to see development like this. Can't wait to subject this to my appalling piloting skills. Keep up the great work.
Awesome! This is ging to be one of the best Moduls for DCS. The amount of simulated Systems is staggering. Happy to wait for the next Video!
This is insane. Wish my grandfather was here to see this. He worked as an executive VP after being an a engineer @ Howard Hughes when they first started making Proto types for the gun/gimbal under the AH64 Apache! Have so many real parts IRL from the Apache helicopter thanks to him!
Great. AH 64 video coming in regularly. Sign of a better things to come
My boss was an Apache pilot. Fun showing him these videos to get his perspectives.
Couldn’t help myself and had to buy this module last night just for a change from the fa18! It’s super fun and I can not wait until it’s more fleshed out. Worth buying just to support this awesome team of developers
I cant wait for this! Keep up the great work guys
I can't believe how good this model looks. Bravo.
Woohoo! Now we're getting to the really fun part of these tutorials! Thanks, Wagz, for another great video. I might need to start wearing a bib if I start drooling any more though.
What I find most amazing about this video is the title: "Gun". No further explanation needed.
I can feel a cold start video coming woo. Great vid Wags!
It will be the last video in the series.
whole opening shot is beautiful congrats!
Wow eagle dynamics this looks incredible
As an armament dawg, I can't believe the level of realism in this sim. I'm incredibly excited to get my hands on this module!
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING GUYS, cant wait to engage some technicals with my copilot.
The way that hook hanging on the top left of the cockpit moves is mesmerizing...
I hope they won't move in sync, otherwise they look annoying a little bit in long flights. :)
@@DevrimBabacan at least they're tactical hooks...
They’re showing off at this point
The new FLIR rendering looks great
Very much looking forward to this. Thanks for the update Wags.
Wow everything is super impressive, but the vibrations and movements in the cockpit at like 5:50 blew me away. That sort of attention to detail boosts immersion by huge amounts.
Your voice is so soothing, it helps me negate the notion, I am operating a machine that was constructed for eradicating human life, in an upmost auspicious way !
Idk why but that metalic thing hanging on the upper left side of the pilot that had physics applied to it is an absolutely awesome detail, very immersive
An FPS hook for older GPU's.
wow, the sound of the gun is spot on
This is the feature I'm looking forward to the most!
Looks awesome wags, looking forward to trying it out!
Amazing. And I remember going to my neighbors house to play Pong in the early 80's and being excited.
Going to spend more time with DCS than my wife when this module releases! 😍👍
Your wife spends more time with other modules than you usually? :)
@@getsideways7257 Sure... if she DCSed too.
I have my sim in the living room so technically I spend most of my spare time with my wife :I

Looking good Wags. Take as much time as you need.
Thank you for bringing this amazing machine to DCS.
Outstanding work on this cant wait for more tutorials....
Finally an Apache video, where my head was not spinning due to all the technical systems and abbreviations 😉
Thanks for the video. I am looking forward to the release..
I'm still wondering how the f... i will be able to bind all these button on my cheap T16000 but I'm very happy to see so great improvements on the aircraft, thank you for all the great work !
Modifier buttons are your friend. I managed to cram almost all the A-10C HOTAS commands on my old Sidewinder FFB2 with only 8 buttons and one hat. It can be done :-)
*cough* Virpil master race *cough*
After 20 happy years of using the FFB2, I finally went with the Winwing Orion for a HOTAS last year. Great product! Still keeping the FFB2 to hand for helicopters though...
Modifiers and keyboard. It is what I use to fly the Hog, for instance.
@@sloppydog4831 what do you mean by modifiers? dumb question I know haha
Yesss - looks amazing!
Your cadence really reminds me of the instructor in Janes LB2. Giving me major nostalgia.
Love the module, love dcs and your voice haha
Yeahy, this will all be great,if and when it finally comes out.
Could not be more excited for something I understood none of.
Looks amazing! Ty.
Thank you Matt - my work project is now 7:10 minutes late 😁
Pointing the gun where you look is still one of the coolest features of the Apache.
I'm sure all those surviving B-17 belly gunners wished that's how it worked for them.
Once this comes out, all of my other steam games are going to be so jealous! I'm going to spend all of my time learning this helo! :D
Ok this looks ready enough. Bring it out Tomorrow thanks ;)
Will the gun firing rate field modification be an option in the ME or options?
will there be a way to record and extract footage from the FLIR sight?
You said that "This is most often reduced in the field" in regards to the rate of fire. Does this mean we will be able to select it at some point in the future? Given the chaotic environments of DCS it would sometimes be very useful to have that full rate of fire, but in others, like reality, it would be beneficial to have that reduced for the same reasons.
The rate of fire is not selectable. In the field, dirt, AHS tensions, and other factors will reduce the rate of fire.
@@salamiflavoredspider You seem to have some experience in this field, so if I may ask: how many rounds are typically carried in combat? Do crews usually carry 1200 or is 300 really all they take? (I'm sure weight plays into that decision as well)
@@kamraam1464 in 6 years I never saw anything but the 300rnd Robbie tank installed.
@@salamiflavoredspider gotcha, thanks for the reply!
that swinging coat hook is such a flex
To make a purchase decision one need to know an important thing - does this metal hook accurately react to the aircraft's movement?
I have a question, I pre-ordered the addon a few months ago, and I'm wondering when the EARLY ACCESS begins, can you fly them now or not = and if so, how does that work?
Just lovely!
5:42 how good is that dangling hook!
What's the purpose of the hook? To hang preserved meat in Dasbot-style?
That’s great! Where’s the update video where you push the Apache back another month?
Aw yeah, it's getting real now. Startup gotta be soon!
Good stuff!
I'm sure I'm not the first to say this, but: Damn! This thing looks gorgeous!
Hellenic AH-64D!! Nice!!!!
Cant wait to fly it with my HP Reverb G2!🔥
As cool as the idea was, I'm glad ED took out the HMD glass edge in the "peripheral view". Thanks!
It is an option.
Any chance to remove the several control "guards" as an optional function in the special settings for apache module.
In regards to such a weapon, relying on HE splash damage to do much of the damage:
How is the ground unit damage model update coming along? =)
No problem morting leg and unarmored unit without direct hits.
@@MattWagner Ok, good that new weapon systems do reasonable damage. :)
I'm eagerly awaiting a broader update to the damage model so that, for example, a HEAT Mav doesn't do more AoE damage vs infantry and unarmored units than a 500lb Mk82. :')
Best Valentine's day when we get to play with chaingun
Is there a reason the TSD is usually on the right? I've been wondering about that considering its where you do points etc and the keyboard unit is on the left.
Wags quick question does the gun have a coincidence when its avoiding the wire strike protection system off the left hand nose of the aircraft?
will it be possible (or is it possible in real life) to laser something for other players (for example FA 18 Missiles)?
Nice job team
Can't wait!
Low left, high right. How I was taught to lead targets in aerial gunnery.
Matt how is the Multithreading working out so far cant wait for the next update for it
love your work keep it up and best wishes from everyone
Wags - Could you do a setup video with what you have recommended. Joysticks, TrackIR or VR, pedals, mice, ect. I'm really wanting to get into this and would like a little info ahead of time if possible.
Bought this back in Nov sale…. HURRY UP AND WAIT. Semper fi!
Wow, the frequency of these videos is going up. 😍
Please, release it with a theme that ressembles Jane's Longbow theme.
Can the pilot not ID targets via the front sensor before they start shooting? Or is it Pilot eyeball only?
The pilot can use the VID page if the target is being looked at by the TADS.
Quickest click in history
really need an option to remove "disable cyclic trigger guard". Just realized that was why I couldn't fire gun or rockets this last time. This is one of the few things I've ever run into where realism ruined my experience xD
Just like the A10c, if the only thing I learn besides flying it is using the gun, I’ll be more than happy. For me, every other button press is not needed
With each video i wonder, how many bindings can you fit on a cyclic and collective, to use this in VR. You would need a whole button-loaded cockpit to use this without breaking the immersion by picking up a controller just to push a button.
Will we see a change to gun damage overall? I did a gun run with bother the A10 and the F18 and have infantry damaged but none killed in a strafe from the larger Guns
Yea I thought it was odd as well I was rockin the hind the other day and hit infantry with 30 mm and cause 82 % damage but not killed I feel like if one of those rounds landed anywhere near you within 10-30 feet you would be missing some of your god given features.
@@TheCraigHudson ya and I did a run with my Hornet into a crowd of ~75 infantry and spend 250ish rounds. Watched it on my pod and had several guys in helos watching it. And every one of them survived and kept fighting. At least one of them shoulfa been dead
@@TheCraigHudson Yeah, would be nice if they added some RNG area of effect to simulate the shrapnel. Wonder how bad it would be on the processing though with so many rounds
Everything is looking awesome so far, keep up the great work! Is there any simbology in the pilot visor to understand if the gun is within azimuth and elevation constraints?
Yes, over the HAD, just like the TDU.
@@MattWagner Oh ok! Thanks for the reply.
Time between tutorials is getting shorter. Through the force I feel, early access release is close

@@MattWagner thank you and the team for the hard work and for taking the time to make sure to deliver a great product :)
woah this is good
Great job guys. Keep up the good work can't wait. Thank Wags.
I like the new helmet retical
Look at that cockpit vibration
Hey Wags. Love the tutorial. Just wondering: Why is Robbie Tank not optional??? Seems a bit odd. Lmk.Thanks.
Required time.
The Robbie tank is pretty much the standard loadout for that version of the Apache. Taking it on and off you would have to rework flight dynamics with different fuel loads, so for early access it makes sense to just stick with one.
@@gerardheil8303 so why not just in EA leave it off and add it later? 300 rounds is nothing
@@bomkata 300 rounds is tons. The Mi-24P has 250 rounds and a much faster firing rate and it's plenty. The AH-64 has a slower firing rate and is turreted. How many technicals and 2 man mortar teams are you going to engage in 1 sortie?
With rare exceptions your standard AH-64D Apache comes with the Robbie tank equipped because they realized the extra fuel was more useful then 900 rounds of probably unused ammo before you need to gas up again. That combined with a standard full load of 8 hellfires and 38 Hydra 70 rockets is more then enough firepower.
@@bomkata I mean at the high rate of fire in the Apache which is 625 rounds plus or minus 25 a minute (often reduced in the field) with 300 rounds you have almost half a minute of holding down the trigger. What other aircraft has that in game?
Does auto ranging use a "flat earth model" or does the FCC have terrain elevation data?
Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy im excited
Like 95% of the time I can't get the auto range to work, what am I doing wrong or is there a bug? I type in "A" but it just stays on the manual range.
