      Will Paterson . Hey, I am huge fan of your work. I am a computer application student from India, I was always into design but never really had the chance to pursue it. I never could afford the Adobe softwares nor the technical requirements to run them.But recently I was introduced to inkscape, an open source alternative to illustrater . Can you do a video on what you feel about inkscape and how far you think I can go with it?

    Will Paterson - some video suggestions if you haven't already made them - rather than a critique, how about discussing sort of key points on what you look for that makes a logo good vs bad? Also, how about a video discussing the challenges of clients that challenge you? (as in don't have a trained eye but want to dissect your work). Just things I think would be interesting to hear your perspective on.

    I really love these kind of "abstract" or geometric logo's. Even making them is so much fun, but its actually not easy to make them to be usefull. I mean, they still have to somehow point to the topic, or company, or feeling it wants to express and i have to tell you a LOT of people and costumers dont see what they should in them, (and lets skip the part where you say "make it better you are just bad", that can be a part of it yes) . And thats just 1 thing, the other is : They dont believe in them, or how much skill it requires to make a good one. So they are going to be reluctant to buy it...especially from a beginner designer....any tips on this? Should i just keep making non abstract ones for years, just because it sells better?

    I’ve done a few fake and a few real dot.coms in Wix, I now have Illustrator 19 from 1997 installed rarer late, I like the visual effects in Illustrator, Wix had limitations, and might be easier to use, but with limitations, with Illustrator - a whole new cup of tea.

    My first thought was a UK three-pin plug, at a jaunty angle with the live and neutral pins representing the upper and lower bars of the 'E' and the earth pin representing the centre bar of the 'E'. The body of the plug represents the back of the 'E'... The jaunty angle allows the middle bar to be a bit shorter than the other two bars. Also, everyone knows what a plug looks like and associates it immediately with electricity. A second plug rotated through 90 deg could represent an 'M' for the metering part.
    Great video, it's always important to emphasise the importance of drawing (no pun intended) from the words and associated terms and phrases of the company.

    So your process is to scribble the letter E because the company starts with E. And THEN after scanning your favorite E you decide what it could represent? ...Well... How about thinking before drawing? In my opinion the first and most important thing with a logo is a good idea that represents the company's business/ the main topic they are dealing with etc. This should take a good chunk of the time invested into a logo designing process. Everything else comes thereafter ...otherwise it's nothing more than a pretty E.

    • @damnphotoshop
      @damnphotoshop 7 років тому +17

      the designer takes the brief into consideration throughout the whole process, if you haven't realized he literally sketches logos that pertain to the brief, starting with the letter 'E' is one of many ways you can start so I don't understand why you can't accept this process... furthermore if you don't agree with the process that isn't an issue, designing is about iterative processes and as long as everyone has a thorough process that benefits their workflow and outcome, it shouldn't matter.
      the way I see it, he's explaining his own process which in fact relates to mine a lot, I've interpreted some parts of the video for myself and I'm now taking these skills and applying them to my practice because that's what the purpose of a tutorial is.

    • @tiffanypersad4603
      @tiffanypersad4603 6 років тому

      Even so the whole idea and point he was trying to make is to be rough. So yes you think of things that represent the company and their values/vision then write them down. Based on this you will have a better idea when sketching ideas on paper.

    Will, this is a neutral suggestion because you've been wondering why people are salty:
    If you remove the "from start to finish" promise in the main title and substitute it with "getting an idea", they will most likely not feel fooled anymore.
    The thumbnail alone suggested to me that there is more than what was ultimately shown.
    I didn't feel fooled, neither am I mad, because I understand marketing and that youtubers want clicks to make money via ads etc, but I can tell you that this is the main reason why the chat is heated up in your video.

      Just looking at this now 😂. How wrong you are sir. It's very difficult to make record a 48+ hour process and make it into a 15 minute video. It's evidently not people like me who ruin the community, it's people like you with your attitude.

    I like to join 2 or 3 letters into 1 to shorten the word. So you use the right side of the letter, so it’s the start of the left side of the next letter. You know what I mean. Hmm

    Hey Will, in your opinion whats the difference in value to employers/customers between designers with a Bachelors, Assosciates, Certificate, and Self-Taught? Do they care? What are advantages and disadvantages of each category?
    Thanks.

    Seems like every designer has their own issues. Ideas flow to me very easily and variations. I am hand drawer so working on computer is most challenging part. You make it look easy though.

    Oh wow. That is interesting to see how the logo design works. There is experimental sketching. Then there is development of a logo with computer software. That is an interesting program. I hope I will be okay using MS Paint for my first logo. It is amazing how ideas can diverge. When I think electric company I think of a yellow lightning bolt. Maybe there can be a cool stylized lightning bolt that is yellow an black. An E can be changed to look more like lightning. The logo developed in the video is very different.
    I am trying to make a logo for my own brand. It is something in the early stages of development. I have art and stories. It is mainly a fantasy story with a fantasy world. The main thing that sets me apart from other fantasy is that I draw a lot from the New Age movement. So I like to have some kind of symbol that represents ancient magic and mysticism. In my early days when I was a teenager, I used a penticle. That is a symbol of witches. Then in recent times, I used a medicine wheel. that is a symbol of shamans and Native American relligion. Then I was wondering if I could make something more origional. It is something that fits a brand that goes with faantasy and mysticism.
    I got to be careful not to have something with too much negative baggage. There are two symbols with used to be good and associated with mysticism. Then they got used by bad people. Then it ruins the symbol. The one symbol I should avoid is the swastika. I don't want to have a logo that looks too much like that. The Nazis have ruined the swastika. Whenever people see that symbol, they think of Nazis. Then they think of the atrocities that the Nazis did, which are WWII and the Holocaust. They don't know that the swastika is actually an ancient mystical symbol. The swastika was associated with sun and lightning. It was also associated with good luck. It is a shame to ruin it. The pentacle was ruined for a while. It was associated with Satan. Satan is an evil character, even being the ultimate source of evil. The Christians of the olden days were against pagans. So they made a bunch of lies about Paganism being about Satan worship. Some Pagan things were smeared to be Satanic. The penticle, the witch and the satyr were all smeared like this. In reality Paganism has nothing to do with Satanism or the Christian worldview in general. In recent times, there is a Pagan religion called Wicca. It is about witches. It uses the penticle. It is a a good religion. That helps reclaim the pentacle. So it is not so disturbing anymore. Modern Satanist groups used the penticle too, and that isn't helping. I am comfortable with having a pentacle sign. I even made a card game as a side project, and that had a penticle. It was a reskin of Magic the Gathering. It was a way to learn about game design. The color pie reminded me of a penticle, so I used a penticle. I am even wearning a penticle necklace right now. I wear it all the time. I hope the swastika symbol gets reclaimed some time in the future. This is not to excuse the Nazis from thier atrocities. This is just so people with understand that the swatika symbol wasn't origionally bad. My best hope is the Jainism religion. It has the swastika for a long time, even in anchient times. It is one of the very few cases where this symbol is allowed in modern Germany. The Jains take peace to an extreme. It is the complete opposite of Nazis, which take violence to an extreme. Maybe the difference will help make things clear. I hope things will be better in the distant future.
    It is cool that there can be creativity in logo design. Maybe I can make my own logo, instead of reusing an ancient symbol. My mystical ideas can get complicated in a hurry. So It takes effort to boil that down to a simple symbol. The basic idea is to have parts that go into a whole. There is a beautiful image of harmony. It can be a complicated picture. I got to simplify. I like to use the number four. It is my favorite number. Four is really helpful for organizing ideas. In numerology, four is associated with order, structure, organization and stability. I just did that. I even get into the habit of listing four given things as example. Two can either be harmonious or conflicting. Three is really unstable. All of these numbers are used a lot in mystic systems. I use two in my system. I don't use three as much. When I look at examples of three things, I figure that there is a fourth part missing. Four is balanced and fleshed out.A table will remain standing when it has four legs. The medicine wheel is a good summery of the main idea, and it uses four. It is a circle with a four armed cross inside. The circle represents wholeness. The four arms represent parts. Having four has good organisation. The pentacle is quite similar. There is a five pointed star in a circle. The circle has wholeness. Then the five points are like the four arms. There is an extra fifth point representing the unity of the four. The swastika has some similarity to the other two symbols. It is a wheel with four angular arms. A good way to picture the four is to have the four elements. There is earth, fire, water and air. Sometimes there is a fifth element, called spirit. Then I was wondering, if I can my my own logo based on that. I thought of having a four pointed star in a circle. I did sketches of that. Some sketches coincidently look like a compass. I guess that works. Another set of four is the four cardinal directions. There is south, west, east and north. Today, I saw some cool books in Barns and Noble. They were in the New Age Section. They had the flower of life. That is a really esoteric symbol. I didn't get the books. Instead I got Dummy books, one for social media marketing and one for blogging. The flower of life books would be cool to get. The flower of life is a complex symbol that means a lot. It is linked to sacred geometry. Then there is a lot of fancy shapes in there. I can watch videos on the Spirit Science UA-cam channel to get a refresher on sacred geomatry. Maybe there is a four pointed star. Then there is a development with a four petaled flower and a four pointed fruit. Maybe there is some kind of cube with four sides. A four pointed star or four petaled flower in the circle of a fruit or seed would look cool. Maybe that can be a logo. I am wondering.
    I am thinking about a color scheme. I like to use colors for elements. Electricity is an element. That gets a yellow color. It is like Pikachu in Pokemon. Pikachu and a lot of other electric type Pokemon are yellow. In the card game and the later video games, the electric type is color coded to be yellow. When I make my own elements I also use yellow for electric. I also like to use a bolt shape. I was thinking of doing something like that for an electric company. For my own brand I do something different. I like to use green. Partly it is my favorite color. Partly it is about nature. A reverence for nature is part of the Mysticism. It is one of the main characteristics of Paganism. Then I came up with some color to represent mysticism and magic. I was thinking of blue. There may be purple in there. Blue and green look really good together. They are analogous colors. There is enough variety to be interesting, but it doesn't clash very much. It is a nice effect. Both are cool, which is relaxing. There is a tranquility to be one with nature and mysticism. I am wondering.
