    Here in the Kurzgesagt labs we test very important ideas to see what happens when you blow things up or play with black holes. Many of you suggested that we look into an idea that sounds reasonable: Shooting nuclear waste into space. It is one of those concepts that seems like an easy fix for one of the main problems with nuclear energy. But it turns out this idea is not just bad but horribly bad and it gets worse the longer you think about it.

      @@mysteryuser7062 ah yes, bury it and forget. That's definitely a way to avoid finding a real solution. To the OPs point, I'm fairly sure the blowback potential on burying hundreds of thousands of radioactive material on our own Planet is way worse.

    • @mysteryuser7062
      @mysteryuser7062 2 роки тому +235

      @@bossdunkz Scientifically speaking, it is the best solution. The capsules take thousands of years to decay along with the radioactive waste, meaning by the time the capsule is gone, the radioactive waste will no longer be radioactive. Basically just inert metal deposits in the middle of nowhere.
      Additionally, being buried means that none of its radiation will ever reach the surface or anything. Most radiation cannot penetrate solid materials (solar radiation travels through vacuum for this reason), but gamma rays can because they’re so small and require about one meter of concrete to stop their penetration. Being 200 meters to 1KM deep in the Earth itself means it’s extremely well insulated.
      As the contents are radioactive, we cannot risk it getting close to any ground water supplies or mineable materials. Geologists can determine what land has no such obstacles, provided it is also uninhabitable for nuclear burial and the location is documented so that no unsuspecting Geologists accidentally digs one up.

    I'm so happy how well they broke down the whole try to solve problems by launching it into space ideas, and showed just how crazy and difficult it would be. Plus the tidbit of breaking down that shooting something at the sun is not as easy or possible as people think

    • @MistaOppritunity
      @MistaOppritunity 2 місяці тому +1

      The gist that I got wasn't that it would be unviable forever, just that we aren't technologically advanced enough to do anything similar. Perhaps in the future when we are capable of colonizing planetary bodies, we'll have the capability to bring nuclear waste with us to those bodies and bury them. An increase in the use of nuclear power would create more and more waste, and eventually we just wouldn't have the space to deal with it on earth after a while. Of course, by that logic, we could also have developed a better way of dealing with radioactive material by then, so who knows?

    • @michaelbrooks6416
      @michaelbrooks6416 Місяць тому +1

      @MistaOppritunity I work at a radioactive clean up project, and minimizing waste isn't as hard as it is perceived. Big oil has just done a wonderful campaign of scaring the public of it. Believe it or not, it can be recycled as well at about the same rate as paper.
      The most risky part of nuclear energy, is it getting in the wrong hands.

      Whatsoever! If anyone analyse History then its easy to realise that there isn't a SINGLE civilization in human History which hasn't been destroyed / punished /annihilated for their disobedience and sins.
      Be it - Babylonian, Mesopotamian, Indus Valley civilization, Persian, Roman, Assyrian, etc. etc.
      However, there could be people who think that this Technologically Advanced Modern Civilization is an exception.
      We all should wait and see!
      This is the order of events according to my limited knowledge & understanding :-
      Collapse of Petro-dollar, Paper monetary system [(cause of WW3) many geo-political conflicts and situations are side reasons /smoke and mirrors] ~ 80% - 90% expected to die ~ Many years of great oppression & injustice, more than even now (probably 7) ~ lsraeI ruling state of the World (obvious) ~ Emergence of Mahdi (r.a.) - A Guided & Just ruler ~ Peace & Prosperity for a while ~ Coming of Dajjal/Antíchrist (their much awaited one-eyed Messiah) in Human form (live for 37 days & will do many miracles & many things) ~ coming of Eesa/Jesus (p.b.u.h.) & killing Dajjal ~ Peace for many years (some say 8-9 years & some 40) ~ Coming of Yajuj and Majuj (a corrupt ancient tribe) in large numbers & much violence & killing ~ Their destruction from an infection / disease on their neck by Allah s.w.t. ~ Peaceful death of all the believers from a breeze from Yemen ~ Destruction of the Kaaba 🕋 (in Mecca, Saudi Arabia) brick to brick by Dhul suwaq qatain (a person with short legs) ~ Dwelling of only Disbelievers and Criminals on Earth ~ The Earth will be cursed coz there will be no one to say La ilaha il Allah (There's no God except Allah) ~ Trembling of Mountains & shaking of the Earth (physical destruction of the World and the Universe).
      We have been already warned about it!
      And there is no city but that We will destroy it before the Day of Resurrection or punish it with a severe punishment. That has ever been in the Register inscribed.
      [Chapter 17 Isra (The Night Journey) : 58]
      'That they said (in boast), "We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah";- but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not.'

However, Starship will be cheap once it is in service. They have quoted it as $200 per kilogram or $91 per pound. That implies a price of $30M per launch with a payload capacity of 150 metric tons (330,000 lbs).

      I have no idea why Kurzgesagt is so opposed to nuclear (maybe they are invested in wind or solar), but this is one of the dumbest videos they've ever made, and yet they claim it took them 2000 hours.
      1) We can already reuse most nuclear waste. This is commonly known, and many countries are already doing it. It's certainly something they would have known if they did 2000 hours of research.
      2) I find it bizarre that they included the extra 97% of nuclear waste that's not dangerous and we can handle just fine in their calculations. Seems like you would only do that if you wanted to inflate the projected cost. :thinking: In reality, it would be at least 97% cheaper than what was projected here.
      3) In fact, it would likely be much cheaper, since we'd be running off of nuclear energy, which is up to 3 to 10 times more efficient under ANY conditions, cause energy costs to plummet, more than making up for the costs several times over.
      4) Nobody was suggesting launching waste into orbit. Seems like the only reason you would add that into the video is to belittle critics. Awfully arrogant.
      5) Deep space orbits don't work that way. Launching into deep space would NOT cause it to bend back and come right back for Earth. The Sun does not have that kind of gravitational pull that far out. The only reason anything orbits out there is because of a lack of any opposing motion. The momentum from the rockets would take it right out of the outer orbit and into deep space, where we would never see it again.
      6) If we launched it at the Sun, we wouldn't need it to go right in. Orbiting tightly around the Sun and getting gradually closer, is perfectly fine, and still wouldn't affect us in any way.
      There, Kurzgesagt. This comment didn't take me 2000 hours. It took me 2 minutes. I just saved you 1999 hours and 58 minutes of research on your followup video, where you admit you were totally wrong.

    I used to work for a University Space Physics Dept, and we had a bit of a panic sending old kit off to be recycled once. We had an item, a cryostat that couldn't get flight certification (I learned all this after the fact) so was earmarked for disposal. So we arranged to pick up a load of old equipment for recycling, and placed it all in a large skip. Then one of the guys from the hardware dept came up to us in a panic, the cryostat had a window made out of Beryllium, which is why it could no longer be flown, because Beryllium is rather toxic. He was therefore rather concerned about how it was recycled, as it needed careful handling and disposal. So we had to suit up and get in the skip to recover it. Luckily, we'd been careful and not just thrown stuff in there. Nuclear waste is of course even worse, being radioactive and toxic.

    The exception might be a few long lived isotopes like Tc-99 and I-129. Their radioactivity is sufficiently low, that a single failure wouldn't spell disaster. In fact, the hazard they pose is roughly equal to the uranium ore that was used to make them, only in a slightly more concentrated form. If we could achieve 99% succesful launches (as has been achieved by Falcon 9 and Atlas 5), you could accept a few "oopsies" happening, as the total amount of radioactivity in the environment would still be reduced. It would also have the benefit of eliminating the hypothetical "what if it leaks in a bajillion years" argument, assuming you've reprocessed and recycled the transuranics.

So we don t need rockets to achieve that. We could use railgun like technology, or space catapults. We could even create sort of space canon to shoot containers with radioactive material.
      As for dealing with it, shooting it into the sun is possible you just need to calculate the trajectory, or you could simply aim at other planets, or outside solar system. You don t have to worry about it getting bigger as the only thing we would need to change to aim farther, would be stronger means of shooting them out and precise trajectory predictions.

    I’ve been watching kurzgesagt since the evolution video in primary school when I was a brainlet, I’ve watched every consecutive video and have absolutely loved watching or talking about kurzgesagt, I even use the thank you card as a bookmark! They’ve been my all time truly favourite UA-cam channel. I’m now 15, I love physics and are working towards an astrophysics job in the future!

      @@mysteryuser7062 That would probably require a whole new video on how it would be done and why it's safe. A lot of people would look at "put it underground" and become seriously worried about contaminating groundwater and the like. Kurzgesagt has always been very careful to explain the risks and lack of risks of things. A passing comment about the solution just isn't their style.

      @@thetherrannative There is no concern for ground water when it’s buried in uninhabitable land (is there ground water for it to contaminate? No) and in a capsule that will take literally thousands of years before leakage is even possible (rarer than lightning strike).
