Nuclear energy creates an uneasy feeling of danger for many people: ancient and dangerous minerals are concentrated to awaken seemingly unnatural powers, creating toxic elements that, if they escape, can and have killed people in horrible ways. How many people has nuclear energy killed and how?

racecar spelt backwards is racecar

There have been around 20 trillion trillion (trillion 2 times is not a typo) sentient life forms, including trillions of mammals and 10s of billions of humans, that have been tortured and violated and raped and molested and degraded and murdered by nature. it's been happening for 100s of millions of years, on a global scale without even 1 second of pause in the action .~
~
Life is without question the worst function in the known universe. But DNA psychology seems to have a literally undying dedication to ignoring this. Perhaps it all seems "deep and spiritual and beautiful" when you're whitewashing 540 million years worth of collateral damage. So what's the rest of the pricetag looking like? Why is this happening? And what exactly goes through someone's head, when they conduct a life experiment with a DNA code that literally invented torture, and yet they have the nerve to act surprised when things go wrong? ~
~
Because DNA evolution is just an error code, it is literally mutants and mutation, not even mutating on purpose, and the entire mutant code was strung together by chaotic incident of physics. It does not know what it's doing, or that you even exist - neither DNA nor the universe has anyone's back.
~
That also means this much harm is being caused for no sane purpose. You've probably seen people acknowledge life has no purpose, but The DNA Delusion creeps back in like a virus, "Life has no purpose... so you make up your own." That means senseless torture is being caused for a made-up purpose.~
~
Even supposed intellectual, rational, secular thinkers can't seem to let this notion go: "The universe created life so that it could..." - just keeps missing the point - not only of this philosophy but of evolution's truth entirely. It didn't do anything so anything.~
~
And this is precisely the knowledge that the philosophies of ‘Efilism’ and ‘Antinatalism’ are trying to spread to make the madness stop.
Happy Tuesday!

I like how the title is “Worst Nuclear Accidents in History” but the video isn’t really about that. Basically a trick to get people to realize how safe nuclear energy is compared to fossil fuels, and I love it.
Radiation
True. Really unique and well-explained.
The UN is right after all....
The good kind of clickbait
I feel like the main reason everyone's scared of nuclear energy is nuclear bombs and Godzilla.
There is also another factor to this than the pure numbers: Deaths related to nuclear, and renewable energy sources are nearly exclusively related to accidents, while the deaths related to fossil fuels are overwhelmingly a result of regular operation. Accidents can never be eliminated completely, but they can be reduced in frequency and severtiy by good preventative measures. So the potential death numbers of these energy sources are even lower, while fossil fuels will just keep on killing until they are phased out.
To add on; this is why these other sources get such shock value.
It's easier to see something that kills 100 people instantly.
It's a lot harder to see something that kills 1000 people over the span of a year.
Lol, just a single nuclear accident will render huge areas unusable. Look for Fukushima, even after 11 years it is still f*cked up
@@steeledminer616 2 people died in Chernobyl instantly due to the blast. 28 in the weeks following due to radiation poisoning. That's *it*. 30 people. Fukushima killed nobody.
@@CircusFoxxo Oh sure but I was just illustrating the key reason the shock value exists with blown up numbers.
But you're right the reality is it's a lot tamer than that.
@@steeledminer616 30 people die one time and it kills the entire nuclear industry. 40 people die in the US and 20,000 globally every single year in coal mining accidents
Deaths per energy unit sound like a stat for a weapon in a game.

I am pretty sure that you watch hent@i
This completely changed my point of view on nuclear power. I thought it was more dangerous than fossil fuels. I’m so glad I stumbled across this video.
yeah, I changed my mom's mind on the subject too
It's still very dangerous, an accident can leave an area uninhabitable for generations. We really need to PERFECT nuclear energy before we completely phase out fossil fuels. Trust me, I really want nuclear energy to phase it out, but we need to improve the technology and perhaps find better alternatives before we do. Solar energy is something we could definitely use and could be utilized better. One thing really holding us back though, is greedy companies that profit from fossil fuels and buy political power
@etholus1000 did you watch same video everyone else did?
I can partially understand the fear from some people regarding nuclear reactions. However, I feel that many disregard the fact that it is virtually impossible for another nuclear accident to occur in power plants that utilize modern technology.
In a modern day nuclear plant, there are a high number of fail-safes to ensure that no meltdown occurs. There are also plants that utilize much safer energy sources to ensure that rogue reactions (which aren’t common to begin with) or problems with materials don’t occur- for example, Thorium is extremely safe compared to Uranium (look up Sam Onella’s video regarding Thorium for more information in a similar vain to Kurzgesagt).
One other problem that many people have is the radiation involved with nuclear reactions. While it is true that this is an issue that can’t be absolutely prevented- protective barriers, suits, and other measures are taken but are not absolute- this video really hit the nail saying that it is significantly less likely for people to suffer side effects or death in comparison to all other forms of energy. The numbers just don’t lie.
Nuclear waste is an issue that’s also difficult to combat, but it’s leaps and bounds easier than trying to revert all the damage that the atmosphere and environment have taken through the use of fossil fuels. Worst comes to worse it is theoretically possible that we could launch all nuclear waste into space (just my own speculation), but I’d much rather deal with getting rid of nuclear waste later than trying to deal with an exponentially growing problem that jeopardizes all life on the planet in the form of air pollution and global warming.
With the modern measures taken to ensure that accidents are a near impossibility and how efficient they are, I really think that the fear of such powerful technology needs to be trusted more as the processes get even safer.
The main problem we face is making sure we properly dispose of the waste; we have so much of if stored above ground near major water sources in the U.S. that millions could be exposed to radiation poisoning if we don't do something about it in the near future. But yeah, in the long run, I'll take nuclear plants over fossil fuels any day: at least we can deal with nuclear waste!
If you think about it nuclear waste is the only waste that is being contained. Launching into space is not practical. Too heavy and there's a chance of launch failure/explosion.
Burying underground is the best way. Remember that nuclear fuel is diluted with solids and molten glass to a point where it's radiating much less which means it's decaying slower which is the reasons it radiates for such a long time in the first place. It can not leak, it doesn't crack and release fumes, it's pretty much inert and just radiates a little bit. It's really not that bad.
Combine that with the massive energy density..
@@TheBestAround131 You could place a nuclear waste castor in your garden and it wouldn't be bad. Some company once started placing them above ground and the only reason they stopped was because of massive backlash driven by people who irrationally assumed it's extremely dangerous and could be weaponized.
Imean, ejecting all of it into space there's going to be an accident, and I don't think there's something much worse than pumping a metric ton of nuclear waste over Houston.
"let us know if you'd like a whole video ab-" "YES WE OBVIOUSLY DO"
100% we'd love a vid talking about Nuclear Waste
Somebody give this man some likes
Oh we really want one...
Absolutely yes.
I'd watch a Kurtzgesagt video on hot to walk probably, it's so good
This reminds me of that one spongebob quote:
"He poisoned our water supply, burned our crops, and delivered a plague unto our houses!"
"He did?"
"Well no, but are we going to wait around until he does??"
Sounds lime they need to push him somewhere else
Hahahaha I love it.
Is it that episode with the dolphin and volcano?
That monke in the intro has so much more relevance now to me.
I'd like to know what's this has to do with the video
After working in nuclear for almost a decade, I agree it is the safest. The safety culture of nuclear (at least in the US) is pushed very hard. A lot of training goes into even being able to access the sites. Almost all maintenance outages that I have worked have had no OSHA recordables, and many not even minor first aids.
Not just in the United States, (Or USA or US or America if you prefer any of those nicknames) Canada's most Important Province, Ontario, gets most of their power from Reactors and might even be safer than America's reactors.
Chernobyl is really a double-edged sword for Nuclear as an option.
On the one hand, the screwup there made sure everyone became much more aware of the risks and determined to make sure it never happens again.
But on the other hand, it’s also the example everyone uses as to why Nuclear is dangerous. That, and the fact that Chernobyl itself won’t be safe for about 20,000 years, which sounds so much worse than greenhouse gases and heavy metals.
I know this is an old video but I feel the need to comment. I have worked in nuclear power my entire adult life, and it is far safer than almost everything else. I feel like the major issue is that the general public is extraordinarily uninformed about nuclear power, and how it actually works. It seems like the majority of uneasiness about it is that the vast majority of people know next to nothing about it. They also know next to nothing about fossil fuels, and as such form an uneducated opinion based of 2-3 accidents that occurred decades ago. They have no idea the number of deaths that occur annually with traditional fuels vs nuclear, which is in the thousands for coal and basically 0 for nuclear. There is a lot of doom saying about nuclear, but as a short term option, it's as good as it's going to get.
I’m still gonna support renewables over nuclear. I understand how safe nuclear is, but the resources are still finite. You still gotta dig the stuff out of the ground and there’s only so much of it.
@@tyjones3566 dont see nuclear and renwables as enemies but as partners
And with the net positive on nuclear fusion it is heading in a really good direction
@@tyjones3566 Currently, Solar panels in industry can last ~20 years being generous, they’re made of rare earth metals that are more *finite* than fertile and fissile materials for nuclear, the idea of solar energy seems to produce the illusion that’ll last forever, but the stuff required to make the panels isn’t as common as you might think, and can certainly run out when you need thousands of panels to match a single reactor during daylight hours, and then every panel needs replacing as well. Your intuition is good but it leaves out a few critical details
"We don't have anywhere to store used nuclear fuel, so it's bad"
Well, we don't really have a good place to store fossil fuel emissions, but that hasn't stopped anyone
Best comment
Never thought of this comeback before, genious.
everybody would love nuclear if you could breath in nuclear waste
I.. I have no argument about this yet
But we do have great places to store nuclear fuel, in fact, inspectors of dry cask storage units for spent fuel on site receive less radiation exposure than pilots
Yeah definitely want a full video of nuclear waste
Hi Timebucks
We do need it, as nuclear is the only energy source with which we can make it through alive, but people are against it based on comics of mutants and pretty much nothing concrete.
especially because nuclear waste could just be stored on the reactor site or i could be processed in smaller fast breeding reactors. But nobody uses them because thez produce even more plutonium then common nuclear reactors.

More depressingly I was talking about death rates for energy consumption and the guy I was arguing said that was unimportant
@@mrtalos Since fatality is unimportant, nuclear is even more favourable in terms of consumption. For kilowatts of power, few grams vs. hundreds of barrels. Additionally, the latter's price is unpredictable.
@@dbclass4075 you would think, but no apparently.
seirously, nuclear energy (especially thorium, which would make a rlly good video) is like, 100x better in every category for producing energy. The fact we aren't funding it is insaine
This is so true. Keep waking people up.
Seriously like, if the choice is between "revert climate change and severe harm done through fossil fuels" or "find a way to dispose of nuclear waste" i think the second option is wayyy better
@@dbk-red-son it's not even hard or expensive to get rid of nuclear waste, and my point isn't even climate change, just it completely beats all other forms of energy production in terms of energy per dollar and in safety (and everything else lol)
Im glad I dont live in authoritarian-totalitarian country, but wow sometimes the general public shouldn't be trusted to vote or have an oppinion on decisions like this :/ lol
Short sighted sheep, scared of safe power production in favour of coal...then again, no-one ever said that public opinion was logical :(
@@GanerRL I actually thought that reprocessing is meant to be amazing as it can actually give more exotic fissionable (fissile?) materials? so if anything (in this anaology) we can burn petrol, capture the exhaust and turn it into a little jet fuel but instead we're just storing the result :S
Ah yes, the ratio that oil tycoons fear the most: deaths per energy unit
Are you being sarcastic?
Even if you not include all deaths from the wars for Oil and the indirect death caused by the economic and violence problems around Oil producers countries, I think it will still be a bigger number.

Governments: *Chernobyl is an irradiated deadly place that everyone should avoid*
Also governments: Lemme just put this coal power plant straight into this major city.
Fun fact: Normally you get more radiation from living next to a coal plant then a nuclear plant because coal spews mildly radioactive particles everywhere. Still tiny enough to be negligible though.
Exactly. Anyone anti nuclear energy is most likely a coal, gas, or renewable shill
Ok so I'm opening replies and closing the again and you're getting 2 likes per second
That's impressive
"Also let's provide tourism to chernobyl"
Complete BS. Nobody is building coal plants "into" major cities. Also recent fossile plants have mostly been natural gas, not coal. Which are also not built "into" major cities.
nuclear energy is like the old man from home alone that seems dangerous but is nice
Hopefully the burglars represent fossil fuels

@@alileevil Until you realize that what you just said was false.

I don't know man, burying some barrels of toxic waste sound way less dangerous rather than releasing deadly gases into the atmosphere.
The thing to remember is that most of the exceedingly deadly isotopes created by nuclear disasters tend to have very low half lives.
A site can remain radioactive for years, but a good amount of the isotopes causing extreme levels of radioactivity will likely burn themselves away in decay within the first few months after the disaster.
Naturally this is ignoring some of the social effects of such a disaster....
Anyway...when isotope half lives are thrown about I like to compare it to a bomb and a candle. The bomb is deadly as it releases a ton of energy all at once. A candle can be made to release the same amount of energy, but since it takes hours instead of milliseconds. It isn't exactly deadly...
That sound at 3:00 actually sent shivers down my body. Made my anxiety spike intensely.

We need to spread the word brother, if more people become aware about how good nuclear energy is we can create enough pressure to convince politicians to make more nuclear power plants. I recommend everyone to share this video to as many people as they can.

It's not seemingly, they put in a fuck ton of work lol
I raised my hand one day in school during a discussion about renewable energy and tried to make a point about nuclear energy. Some kids were like 'Pah! Haven't you heard of Chernobyl?!' But a surprising amount agreed that it was one of the safest if managed correctly.
The biggest difference between Fukoshima and Chrynoble is that in Chrnobyle the reactor lit blew while in Fukoshima it held. Everything around the reactor core was absolutely devastated but the core itself held. It did get a big crack in it and a lot of radioactive gas leaked out but in Chrynoble the reactor core itself, the fuel rods and everything was blown high into the sky.

You failed to mention what is considered the third worst (and by some estimates the worst) nuclear disaster in history that had far greater impact than even the Chernobyl meltdown. On September 29, 1957, the Russian ‘restricted’, unmapped town of Chelyabinsk-40, where the Russian government had secretly decided to build an atomic bomb, experienced a reactor meltdown that produced an explosion of 300 cubic meters (10,600 cubic feet) of 70-80 tons of highly radioactive waste. In comparison, during the Chernobyl incident there was primarily a release of iodine-131, which has a half-life of just 8 days, while the Chelyabinsk-40 explosion released strontium-90 (with a half-life of 28.8 years) and cesium-137 (which has a half-life of 30.2 years). The Chelyabinsk-40 explosion had affected 270,000 people living in the region, and the present generation sees an unusually high levels of various types of cancer illness to this day. The Russian government tried to hide the true extent of this incident from the public for decades.
do you know the difference between a nuclear bomb and a nuclear power plant? one is made to kill, the other to produce energy, one is not included in this conversation because they are fundamentally different.

As a German, it really pisses me off that we have phased out nuclear energy in favour of brown coal (Braunkohle). It is so much more of an immediate, albeit less tangible danger. Had Chernobyl not happened, I think many more countries would be using nuclear power today

I’m proud that like 60% of Canada’s energy production is made by hydro (we can really take advantage of our lakes)
Your population is so low that u dont even need that much electricity.
@@preetams9184 That's true, but consider this: Canada generated 400 TWh in renewable energy, while the USA generated 800 TWh in 2020. So, while the USA has 10 times our population, they only generated twice as much energy from renewable sources than Canadians. Food for thought.
Do you use those lakes as heat sinks for your nuclear reactors, though?
Now if we could get the last 40% to nuclear we would be golden
Here in Brazil we have 66% of our energy production by hydro and it is a great solution to the environment. Of course we change the benefits by other horrible problems in this country but overall it's a great solution.

@@PancakeBoi they even buy energy power from France (75% of France energy production is nuclear btw)
Yes it is.
Did you know the ashes coming out of the coal power plant chimneys is radioactive? A coal power plant puts more radiation into the environment than a nuclear power plant.
Think about it like this: we are used to fossil fuel deaths. Those deaths are consistent every year and we accept it as reality. BUT nuclear deaths happen every 14+ years and I'm reality the the most worrisome nuclear disasters are even more rare. A 50 yr old would have seen 2 nuclear disasters and would think that nuclear is bad. But that same man would not notice the constant fossil fuel deaths around him
Like said in the video, our brain is not capable of noticing slow changes. Plus coal deaths are indirect and similar to some non-coal deaths while radiation isn't. This is probably the reason it's so demonized
When something is common and a seemingly unstoppable problem, people see it more as a force of nature than an active decision to sacrifice those people. But with nuclear energy, it's seen as an active choice to kill people that, if we didn't use it, could be avoided.
Precisely. See: people are terrified of planes but don't think twice about driving their car (and half of them driving with like 20 distractions).
well, the major problem is all about dealocate people.
It's like an example I heard of with cigarettes. Imagine if cigarettes were perfectly safe, but some were replaced with a stick of dynamite that violently blew the smokers' head off. The number replaced is such that the annual death toll of smoking is the same as reality. The same number of people are dying, but the outcry in this scenario would be enormous. The deaths are shocking, obvious, and not concentrated on the elderly (who's deaths are viewed as more acceptable, since old people die anyway, nihilistic I know, but that's how human psychology works).
WOW!!!!!!! You made me think about it, that's for sure. Thank you for the video.

I think it's a bad decision as well, but that is being said with the knowledge about nuclear energy we have today. And fear is the most powerful weapon when it comes to controlling people. The German "government" is just a bunch of lobby puppet masters, the coal lobby saw their chance and took it. The only thing I don't quite understand is how of all things the green party led the fight against nuclear power. people are gonna think that its eating the suns energy and we are all gonna die or something stupid
@@Meboy-uv5td i mean, it is harnessing 100% of the suns energy and we are all going to die
"The sun is flat"
Nevermind the complete disruption of the entire solar system and all those who live in it. Grandiose humanity needs to be grandiose.
Ok ill be less nasty. I am not sure we should build a dyson sphere, just because we can. The only reason i can see is that we would ‘need’ it, given our exponential growth in energy demand. The thing with exponential growth is, though, that we will NEVER be satisfied, not even if we grow. And that makes me look at the practical value of building a dyson sphere much less positively.
Except for a slightly misleading title compared to the actual content of the video, very informative stuff as always, brilliantly animated and explained with clear data, objectivity and visual animation. Love it, share it, fund it and just enjoy... in a nutshell ^^

"There is nothing more permanent than temporary solutions"
This was my exact thought when he mentioned the temporary coal plants in Germany. It's baffling to see how so many countries are still increasing their dependence on coal and other fossil fuels. Closing down nuclear plants is a major step backwards regarding a cleaner, safer and more livable world.
Is that your quote? If not so, who said that?
That's true when it comes to politicians. Never trust the government, they are just a bunch of thieves.

@@josmarrubenbodan3906 More or less, all of the above. It's pressure, methodology, and motivation, which all ties back to morale. Less morale, means little in the way to find motivation to actually LEARN as many are being forced to learn things they aren't interested in. This is one of many issues that keep mental health from being taken just as seriously as physical health, which of course, leads to stress and anxiety.
What I would like to see is also the comparison of operating costs including damage control after accident. I remember visiting Germany as a kid in the late 2000s, and seeing cars driving around with stickers that said 'ATOMKRAFT? NEIN, DANKE!' (nuclear power? No thank you!) How heartbreaking to think those same people might have lost loved ones, or died themselves, to fossil fuel pollution they essentially advocated for.
This is worsened by the fact that germany shut dont many of their nuclear plants and replaced them with fossil fuels.
The same happened in the netherlands. My pa actually wss protesting, and regrets it *HARD*

The problem is these death stats are based on annual figures. But the problem is when something goes wrong with nuclear it goes very wrong and can kill many for many years
but still it is way safer, and with new technology and rules for building them it is basically impossible for this to happen.
I would like a video on nuclear energy designs that solve a lot of the problems of old tech and current projects and prospects such as thorium, fast breeder etc
