I love how Battlefield 3 makes a big deal out of things that would realistically be a big deal. I feel like in most video games, you see a T-90, you see an enemy fighter jet, hell, you even end up fighting a war with Russia, and the game just kind of nods it off because it's expected of a military FPS. In Battlefield 3, when the characters are attacked by a T-90, they panic and run, are surprised to have even survived, and cheer when it gets taken down. When they see an enemy jet, they again, panic and go for cover as fast as they can. When getting into a firefight with the Russian VDV, they're shocked, scared and don't even want to engage for fear of starting a world war. These are soldiers that are maybe veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, anti insurgency conflicts. Some of the officers and maybe a few of the NCO's may have taken part in the Invasion of Iraq in 2003 and went up against light, outdated Iraqi armor, but it would have been few and far between and mostly dealt with by our own aircraft. I doubt any of the infantrymen in Blackburn's squad have ever come up against real enemy armor like a T-90, a modern current generation main battle tank, let alone enemy aircraft like a modern Su-25, before the invasion of Iran. Or infantry as well trained as the Russian military in comparison to insurgents or even the regular Iraqi Army. Going up against all that, going up against a Russian infantry unit, that would be a big deal for them, and this game shows it. I always felt like that was remarkable and something lost in Battlefield 4 onwards.
BF4’s campaign was a disaster, aside from how buggy it was I mean. The characters falling goodness-knows-how-far from a dam they blew up only to brush it off was probably the pinnacle of the bullshit.
I definitely agree with you. When I first played this campaign I was (still am) really interested in history and geopolitics and such. So it really was a breath of fresh air playing BF3's much more grounded campaign after coming off the bombastic ridiculousness that was MW2 (not like I don't love that game for how absurd it is). I definitely loved how when 1st Recon sees the VDV guys and gear they shit their pants at the realization that the unthinkable just happened and their default reaction is just what I'd imagine I'd be thinking "this is waaay over our heads" and "what the fuck did we just start WW3?" Add to that the fact that you and your team are completely cut off from the outside world, all you know is your mission. Lingering in the back of Blackburn's mind, everyone's mind probably, is what the hell is going on out there, at the tactical and operational level all they know is that the Russians are between them and their objective. Yet, for all they know, outside of that valley in northern Iran where they're fighting the whole world is on fire. That sense of dread is palpable. Awesome mission from an awesome game.
Yes America has been fighting insurgencies and conducting policing actions across the globe for years now. But we gained more combat experience then any other and that hasn't made our strategy or our serviceman and women, any less lethal. I will ask this. When was the last time Russia fought a 1st world power, when did they come up against well trained highly capable advisory? "Please dont say Georgia or Ukraine" Or when have they met a US piloted F22 or a US crewed M1A2 Abrams in combat? At least during my time. The Marines still trained to fight near peer advisories, in any clime and place. That said, in a scenario the game presented. Both sides would be taken aback and have reservations about the engagement. But an order to close with and destroy the enemy by fire and close combat, is a legal order. No matter how one feels in uniform.

The sun has set on the Empire some time ago and she has also suffered some catastrophic losses. You may have heard this before, but nobody cares about who you used to be. They only care who you are now. Its goes with people and nations alike. USA is still a super power. We have highest defense budget, exceeding the combined budgets of the 7 top nations. America is a very large nation with a great deal of diverse climates and terrain and during my time the Marines. I became acquainted with at least 4 of the six climates and every type of terrain and condition imaginable. But thats just me. It's not uncommon for first world powers to have troops train and become familiar and acclimate to foreign environments. Not to mention WW2 sent men and material to every point on the compass to fight, so it's not some special thing. Lastly we have tons of modern and early 20th century combat experience to pull from. That scene with the Russian transports flying directly overhead is one of my favorites of any war game. The air strike segment was also very memorable.
@vann tedd I agree. But the Russians prefer engaging as close as possible to optimize the accuracy on the range of their AKs. The Vietnamese had the same hold them by the belt strategy.

Let’s be fair and remember that this is a specialized Marine unit. Recon Marines are not a standard unit and also Russian paratroopers are not Spetsnaz. This is a depiction of a special operations force on force engagement and it is done really well, entrenched with a great story. Loved this game more than any other BF! Need a remaster for current gen.
@@shanetanner4654 I wouldn't say they smashed them. By the time the battle was over, only Blackburn, Montes and Cole were left standing of Misfit 1-3. My fav mission was Operation Guillotine, turning off the hud and turning up the volume and all you hear was all those gunshots echo throughout the city
4:00 I really like how accurate is the engine sound of the planes at this scene. I heard them a lot in real life and it's exactly like that. (except it's a lot louder)
Dude special forces units can wear whatever camo. My boss was Air Force TACP and told me he had to wear Army camo for a while and also multi cam before the AF even adopted it. Stop getting hung up on shit
These aren't Spetsnaz, they're paratroopers deployed to delay the US advance... Dima and his men were the only Spetsnaz during this battle and I don't think they ever directly engaged the Marines except at the very end of the mission when Blackburn meets Dima.
just feels like an authentic war story. nothing too corny or out of place, sticks to a theme and time, builds a connection with likeable characters. absolutely great.
Even deep down you know it's a game and you certainly will survive. It is still shocking that they let your platoon facing an entire VDV Battalion just landed on the ground. They perfectly build up the stress and atmosphere, hell BF3 really did their homework. The campaign is amazing.
What bugged me about cole , beside his glory hound attitude , was his lack of self awareness in situations. Sure technically doctrine was on their side but this still would be a serious international incident that would escalate tensions tremendously. Not in the military but I would assume he would’ve been awaiting severe repercussions from higher ups due to the dangerously flawed decision he undertook to take on a Russian battalion .
I was just thinking same thing. Surely they were outnumbered 5/1 at the minimum. I don't believe they would have just ran at an enemy like that as well.
@@Aralakh919and on top of that, after all his task force was wiped out or damaged severely and 2 of his brothers die bc of his orders, he has the balls to ask the remaining mens under his command to push forward and complete his mission, I wanted to blow his head so badly at that point tho.
The amount of personality between these characters is amazing. I wish we have a campaign and characters like these guys again in the next battlefield game
I remember replaying this mission, brought back so many memories. That was my favorite mission to play at all times. RIP Matkovic and Campo, you guys will be missed. Like if you also miss them (I know you guys wont but I dont care anyways...)
I remember playing this mission. It is the first USMC mission to fight against Blue Berets (Nickname for VDVs) rather than PLR. But unbeknownst to them, the VDVs were fighting to stall the USMC's search for Kaffarov.
When firing rockets keep in mind that a blast comes from the rear too and it can kill allies behind you. I love the detail this game had. Meanwhile on COD you can probably fire one in a locker and be alright.
Gottem. Not to mention, usually bots call people names for no reason to illicit a reaction. That's probably why the person here called you an idiot for an otherwise harmless, albeit dark joke.
I recently started to play BF3 again after I fixed my computer. And youtube is suggesting me your videos. Too many memories. This is one of my favourite scene in this game. BF3 itself has a great story and you can really feel involved with your emotions: Adrenaline, fear, joy. Thanks for your upload!
14:54, the dialogue of the characters in that part is just amazing. Gotta hand it to the VAs for their performance, they really did make an emphasis on how terrifying being in the sights of an enemy fighter gunning you down.

Well technically they’re not Spetznaz, but Russian VDV, their version of the Airborne if you will.
the vdv are a branch of the armed forces of russia, no ties to spetznaz whatsoever.
And this is totally fictional, usmc couldn't smash them like that. They are both the same in power and training
@@shanetanner4654 I wouldn't say they smashed them. By the time the battle was over, only Blackburn, Montes and Cole were left standing of Misfit 1-3. Blackburn then says that himself, Cole, Montes and only a couple of others assaulted Kaffarov's villa.
So yeah, they beat back the Russians, but not before the entire unit basically got decimated.

My favorite mission. 4:30 onwards is absolutely immersive and if you turn off the HUD, it’s absolutely beautiful. This game is and still is ahead of its time.

Force recon has been known to wear multicam. They aren't restricted to Marpat or Desert Marpat

Dude special forces units can wear whatever camo. My boss was Air Force TACP and told me he had to wear Army camo for a while and also multi cam before the AF even adopted it. Stop getting hung up on shit
Isn’t marine recon SOF? Or is that MARSOC Raiders?

These aren't Spetsnaz, they're paratroopers deployed to delay the US advance... Dima and his men were the only Spetsnaz during this battle and I don't think they ever directly engaged the Marines except at the very end of the mission when Blackburn meets Dima.
That shit is only for the propaganda value, they dont do it normally

I could just listen to purely audio and still be immersed. The sound design was that great, and it's a sound from 11 years ago. Just wow.
just feels like an authentic war story. nothing too corny or out of place, sticks to a theme and time, builds a connection with likeable characters. absolutely great.
I love how BF3 always tried to make a big deal with realism in the campaign and then they forgot to add drivers to jeeps.
FRIENDLY FIRE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED

Even deep down you know it's a game and you certainly will survive. It is still shocking that they let your platoon facing an entire VDV Battalion just landed on the ground. They perfectly build up the stress and atmosphere, hell BF3 really did their homework. The campaign is amazing.
Considering the amount of airpower America has, i wouldn't be surprised if a USMC platoon wipes out a VDV battalion.
@@Cynthia_Blackraven_666 lol fucking cope, jarhead platoon has fucking nothing, get your stupid muh air power out here. dumb mutt.
