for those of you commenting about the vocals being off. a common thing maurice star the producer and writer of their first album did with the music in the studio was lower the pitch of the song in the recording studio and have the singer sing in a lower key then when they got the great vocal take theyd raise the whole thing up a few keys. Was great for radio but horrible on the voices of the singers cuz they had to go out and try to recreate this stuff live. hats off to my boys here. ralph really doing his best.
@@Dan_446 you don’t sing falsetto because you’re tired lol.... you sing falsetto because you can’t comfortably hit notes from your diaphragm .... he’s going through puberty
Sounds like he was saving his voice, you can hear that he still sounds the same in some spurts but he's choosing to sing in falsetto. Ralph's voice changed slower than most boy singers.
This is classic. I was literally waiting for an elevator in between classes when this song was released in philadelphia. We were in the 9th grade changinging classes when somebody turned there boom box on. Can you imagine a bunch of freshman hearing candy girl for the first time. Like a scene from "fame". We were actually dancing in the hall. Once again CLASSIC. HSES CLASS OF 86!!!!!!!!!!!!!
every girl in my homeroom in 6th grade was singing this song, i didn't know who the hell New Edition was. growing up the 80's had it's good moments ....
Outstanding... Man does that bring back memories... One of the better live versions of that track by the fellaz at that age... That is no doubt NE Singing!! Oh and no doubt Ralphs voice was changing!! He and the rest of the fellaz sounded great on this track and did when I saw them live during that same period!! Thaks for posting!!
PART OF THEY BEAT IN THE BEGINNING SOUNDED LIKE STEVIE WONDER. THE WAY RALF VOICE IN AN OUT WASN'T EVEN MESSED UP HE STILL SUNG THE HELL OUTTA THIS SONG GONE BABY
Gucci Paris They sound fine. If you sing then you know that your voice will strain after continuously hitting high notes. They don't sound like trash either, they sound fine
99KuTpie what? Before puberty singing this song wouldn’t have been a problem. He was 14 and his voice was changing. The single Candy Girl was recorded in 1982 when he was 13 and his voice hadn’t dropped yet. But during this performance his voice had definitely dropped already. That’s why they usually lip synced. The only way for him to even kinda reach these high notes is through falsetto and his falsetto is not good here at all. There’s no denying that they had talent and had good songs but he didn’t get the right vocal training he needed during his voice change and even after and that’s why he has performances like these
Ya'll gotta remember this song was already a couple of years old even at the time of it's released. It was released in 83 but I think I remember hearing Maurice Starr or one of the N.E. members saying that it was actually recorded in 1980 or something. Don't quote me.
Yeah...Point being, his voice had matured some, between when the song was recorded and when it dropped. Even just a year or two can make a big difference for a male singer going through puberty.
man its crazy wen u lose ur kid voice ..this is something that should be noted...hard to do. and to ralphs credit, he switched up and transitioned smoothly into his later voice which was Perfect for N.E..mike jackson had a hard time doing this
Guess many people don't understand that singers utilize their falsetto's when their natural voice changes. Plus I doubt that most tenors even at Ralphs age shown here would be hittin the same notes that they could when they were much younger. It happens to all vocalist at some point. Most of the time they just transpose the key down. Can't expect Joey Mcintire to still be singing "Please Don't Go Girl when they got older in the original key either (lol)
WOW is this rare..you will never see this footage anywhere except for youtube. First off Ralph is singing in falcetto and his regular voice...his voice doesnt seem to be cracking at that time so I wonder why Maurice made him sing this way ...
I was soooooooooooooo GLAD when they fixed Bobbys teeth after their their first few performances! And till this day I hav never seen anyone w/ that many gaps and spikes in their mouth. Yall from back in the day know what Im talking about LMAooOO
I love my New Edition but this is the first time I ever heard Ralph's pitch so far off, he's usually on point. I noticed that he didn't have on an in-ear monitor, he probably couldn't hear his key.
I have to say that when New Edtion first came out with candy girl I didn't like them. I thought they were a cheap imitation of my boys the J5, then Popcorn Love came out and i was like they Aw right but then they released IS THIS THE END and i was like these boys are BADDD!!!. Ive been a fan ever since.
rodney folsom I agree. I was a senior in high school in 83 didn’t give them the time of day , but like you , “Is this the end “ was my jam and then I wanted to marry Ronnie 😂

& they did that while their voices were changing . . . now that's challenging. Great job guys!
Ralph going through puberty!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Its true tho
Na he was just to tired so he sung in falsetto
@@Dan_446 you don’t sing falsetto because you’re tired lol.... you sing falsetto because you can’t comfortably hit notes from your diaphragm .... he’s going through puberty
Wow! Just saw them last week and I felt like I was 13 again. My generation's Temptations for sure!
Ralph voice was changing…. Fun fact the song was recorded in 82 but wasn't released until 83

Awwww lolol Puberty. All singers go through it
No R&B/Soul vocal and dance group in THIS generation even comes close to the choreography AND longevity of N.E. These guys are LIVING LEGENDS.

Damn they made them dance for 30 minutes before they sung...You don't see that today without lip syncing...LOL
PART OF THEY BEAT IN THE BEGINNING SOUNDED LIKE STEVIE WONDER. THE WAY RALF VOICE IN AN OUT WASN'T EVEN MESSED UP HE STILL SUNG THE HELL OUTTA THIS SONG GONE BABY
Woooow, thats all live.... Wooooooooooooooooow!!!!! Best thing ever!!!!! I'm speechless!!!

OMG! Thanks for posting! They look so young and cute. I wish I were alive back then.
hahaa... You seen Ron hit a extra spin at 0:23!! lol... CLASSIC
These guys still rock....
I love listening to Candy Girl!
His high notes sound better than any of the so-called "r & b" that's popular today.
KWAPT not here
Blood sweat and tears the NE way
Poor kid! Don't worry young brother... you still have a long career ahead of you.
They sound good.
No they don't not on this. They sound like trash here. They should've had the key lowered because here they're straining
+Eric Dangerfield true

Javonte Treble it was recorded a year prior in 1982
It was recorded around 1981 - 82

@JustinBarberBB Me too.

has nothing to do with it. his voice got deeper and they tried getting him to sing in falsetto and thats hard to sing in while going through puberty
@batmancollegestudent Yeah, it probably would've worked out better if they had lowered the key to the music.
@JustinBarberBB Me too
When was this
They should of let Bobby do Ralph parts because they voice sound similar before their voices changed
I have to say that when New Edtion first came out with candy girl I didn't like them. @JustinBarberBB youre welcome
And despite the comments here still maintain that voice for cool it now
no sir !!!! lmfao !!
Poor Ralph.
You can't avoid the voice change.
interrupting rick????
Ikr. Wtf! I would slapped ralph back at the hotel🤣
The the movie one
The sound mixer whoever did ralph and bobby dirty 😅
yes he was lol he's fine
I like new edition but Ralph’s voice
is that somebody else singing???
@keithypoo31 That's because his voice was changing. LOL
Well If Ralph couldn't hit the high notes anymore they could've give his parts to Bobby. He still had that kid voice lol!
Betty Millz or just change the key so Ralph could still sing his part.
Ralph should’ve just sang in his natural voice
By that time their voice started to change
What's up with the voice?
mofodolo puberty
I know how ronnie haired growed now
Work it out Ralph! you'll be ok.
@keithypoo31 lmao
Lmao, he got fine in the other videos....and he fine now. But in this video, oh no.
its ok................AND IM SCHOOL
damn hearing rick little part in this i wonder why h never got more chances to lead he is better than ralph and bobby and close to johnny.
80's graphics give me seizures. Are there 30 people on stage?
you sure lol
the introwas long and waaah i never belive his voice was that sqeaky but is tru
i forgot they aint have no autotune
How come nobody notice the obvious, is it just me who noticed. The Temptations stamp all over,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Ummmmmmm
this was weird
bobby could sing better... Just couldn't see putting the mischievous one out front i guess
Bobby could never sing. Well he couldn't stay on key the whole song and he was hard on the eyes. Ralph's voice was changing.
I take it non of you guys are musicians at all. They sound bad here and that's because they are straining to hit those notes
Eric Dangerfield Puberty.. the song was recorded before Ralph's voice changed
Don Duckersley yeah Ik
Squirty poop
