Walnut shells do not sharpen pins and needles. They only add weight to keep a pincushion from sliding around on the table. The purpose of the strawberry on a pincushion has been to hold a small amount of emery to help with burrs and nicks. The pin or needle is pushed into the emery and twisted, to remove burrs. This is not sharpening. Pins and needles become dull and should be disposed of safely. Each community has its guidelines for disposing of sharps in authorized containers at authorized places of disposal. Throwing them in the trash is dangerous. An additional reason for using walnut shells is that they do not attract moisture like polyester and steel wool. Polyester dulls needles and pins and makes them rust. Steel wool breaks down and is unsafe, and it, too, attracts moisture causing rust.
